Aya! Got some more queer cheer for ya! Later, the big gay beer, fighting hate! First though! Devogue Opera, celebrating an LGBTQ+ rights and anti-apartheid activist in South Africa. Simon & Coley spent his life fighting against depression during the 80s and 90s and organised the first Pride March in all of Africa. And Coley, the Vogue Opera, opens today in Cape Town, telling the gay campaigners' story through classical music, hip-hop, lip-syncing and protest songs. Director John Trengove tells Cape Talk, Simon's two big causes were often in conflict. "He faced homophobia within the Black Resistance movement and he faced racism within the gay movement, but he never wavered. He fought for everything that he believed in equally." Simon died from AIDS-related illnesses in 1998, at the age of 41. He helped to get queer rights protected in South Africa's constitution. A man in Germany is probably being cured of HIV. He had a stem cell transplant in 2015 for leukemia and stopped taking his anti-HIV medication three years later. Up to now, there's no sign of the virus returning, so he could be only the 7th person in the world to be cured. A brewery in Texas has created a big gay beer to push back against hate. It's after Brutarium's monthly drag brunch was cancelled in June, because of a bomb threat. Proceeds from the IPA will go to Veterans for Equality who protect queer events from bigoted boneheads. Jen Penyers, the group's founder. "This is what my vets do. When there's protesters they have signs, they hold up and it blocks them out. We like to de-escalate things. We don't like to instigate. We are non-confrontational as much as possible, but you know, as veterans, we don't mind getting froggy if we need to." Oh, I am so froggy. The big gay beer is 8.7% and very fruity with pink guava, mango and orange. And who'd have thought it? A video that appears to show of Vladimir Zelensky, unconscious in an LGBTQ+ club toilet is a fake, never in a million years. It supposedly showed the Ukrainian president being woken up by police from a drug-induced state, but fact checkers say the original, undoxed footage shows a different man, a separate image of Zelensky and Hotpants at a Pride event is also fake. Sadly. Ah yeah, it's the final Pride Daily of 2024, as the queer cheer continues. Later, why Tom Daly's been down on all fours. First though. Let's talk about the ride-sharing service that's been launched in Pakistan for transgender people. The hope is she drives will be a safe alternative for those who are often harassed on public transport. Trans people are seen as outcasts in Pakistan, which is a mainly Muslim country. Hushbu lives there. She's transgender and tells D.W. it's hard. They're a good and bad people. Most of them are bad. And crowds people grow us or do nasty things. Someone will say why are you doing this? We say to them we're humans like you. The She Drive service is starting off in Lahore with a view to expanding to other Pakistani cities. A number of same-sex couples have taken part in a special 100 weddings in a day celebration. It's marked the 100th birthday of Old Marlabin Town Hall in London. Couples tied the knot, had a civil partnership or renewed their vows. Darryl Jackson and Graham Downey were among those making it official. They tell the BBC the venues got significance for them. We used to live around here so it's really kind of we used to pass this place every single day walking our dog, didn't we? And no, kind of dream about what it would be like to kind of get married there and to actually be here and do it. We feel so privileged to have been chosen actually. It's just beautiful. Quite a few celebs have got married there too, including Paul McCartney, who's done it twice. This is for all the gay men who like to hike. If you come across a woman on her own during a trek, how can you subtly convey you're not a threat? Some tips from Tiktokka Stan Chris. The video has had about 28 million views. We at Thai actors Musa Passett and Tool Pecorn have got engaged. Mugat Down and One Knee during a press conference to launch his latest single after asking his boyfriend to join him on stage and Tool said yes. Last month, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. The law comes into effect in January. In Tom Daly's been testing how sturdy the beds are at the Olympic Village in Paris. They're made of cardboard with organizers denying claims it's to stop athletes having special cuddles on them. Ahead of Friday's opening ceremony, he's posted a video proving their strength by jumping up and down on them. And for an extra treat, he finishes up on all fours. Hi there and happy new year. It's our final day of Queer Cheer. Later, why Ian McCallen, his old queen goals? First though. Queer people in New South Wales in Australia are getting more rights. And new equality law means, amongst other things, trans people can change their birth certificate without surgery. Liberal MP Felicity Wilson went against her own party to vote for this. She addressed her critics in Parliament. Allowing an individual to change their sex on their birth certificate is deeply personal and impactful. Those who claim it will create risk for women of fear mongering. I've never been asked to show my birth certificate to enter a bathroom or to enter a sports change room. It's a matter of dignity, autonomy and individual rights. The new law also means birth certificates are going to have a non-binary option and threatening to out someone whose LGBTQ+ becomes an offence. Next, the first transgender football team in Spain. Phoenix FC has made its debut in a regional league in Catalonia. They actually lost 19 nille but will gloss over that. The team was set up by Hugo Martinez, who was forced out of a women's side when he started transitioning. Captain Lucie Barnes tells Reuters the importance of this goes beyond sport. Phoenix is a team of trans boys created entirely by trans boys. But I think it's more than that, a family, a safe space, a space where you can be free and express yourself however you want and how you really feel. A Tiktoker says she can now pay for the rest of her transition thanks to being so very demure. This is the buzzword that's big on socials right now, off the back of it a video by beauty influencer Jules Lebron has blown up big time. You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure, very mindful. See how I look very presentable. The way I came to the interview is the way I go to the job. Be mindful of why they hired you. Here's your reality check Diva. What's the name you'd like me to make it out to? Jules' Tiktoks are now racking up many many millions of views leading to lots of lucrative opportunities and a success is having a very meaningful impact. One day I was playing cashier and making videos be on my break and now I'm flying across country to host events and I'm going to be able to finance the rest of my transition. I finally said it without crying. Jules says for her, "Demure is a playful nod to a trans identity." Thousands of crickets have been released into an anti-trans gender conference led to 600 awful people being evacuated from the LGB Alliance meeting in London. Activists from a group called trans kids deserve better say they were behind it. And when I'm an old queen and I'm not far off, I hope I can party like Ian McKellen. The 85-year-old actor has been spotted at roast, which is advertised as London's beefiest club night. He was photographed posing with two topless men. Hi there, we're back to normal and catching up on a few stories from over Christmas. Later, Rebel Wilson gets married to her wife again. First though, going to mark the death of former US president and queer ally Jimmy Carter at the age of 100. During his stint in office between 1977 and 1981, he set up a meeting at the White House with LGBTQ+ rights activists, the first of its kind there. Plus, Carter worked to prevent a ban on queer people from being schoolteachers in California. Nine years ago, he said this to Huff Post about same-sex marriage. That's no problem with me. You know, everybody should have a right to get married regardless of their sex. I believe that Jesus would approve gay marriage. I think Jesus would encourage any kind of love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else. And I don't see that gay marriage damages anyone else. Carter also spoke out against the Don't Ask Don't Tell rule that kept LGBTQ+ members of the armed forces in the closet. A man accused of running a queer travel agency in Russia has died in custody. Andre Kotov was thought to be up on charges of organizing extremist activity and participating in it for running a queer travel agency. The non-existent international LGBT movement is designated by Russia as extremist. The 48-year-old claimed he was tortured with a stun gun during his arrest. And Rebel Wilson's gotten married to her wife again. The actor, Andrew Mona Agruma, had a wedding ceremony in Sardinia last September, but same-sex unions aren't actually a thing there yet. They've now had their marriage legalized in Sydney. It was officiated by Rebel sister Liberty. Either. Later. Let gay people be boring. We'll start with this though. The first out transgender member of the U.S. Congress, where America's laws are made, is sworn in today. Democrat Sarah McBride won the seat for Delaware in the House of Representatives a couple of months back. The 34-year-old helped pass a trans-non-discrimination law in the state and secured paid family and medical leave. She tells the Associated Press that gender identities not what it's all about, actually. "I am so relieved that other trans folks get to see this news. But the reality is that I didn't run to be a first. I didn't run to make history with an election. I ran to make historic progress for the state and for this country." Sarah's been into politics from a young age. As a kid, she practiced speeches in a bedroom from a makeshift podium. A top ski jumper used a coming-out post on Instagram to mourn the death of his boyfriend. Andre Stacalla from Poland says he met Damien back in 2016, calling him "my rock, my biggest supporter, my everything. He died in November." Every day without him is a struggle for 29-year-old ads, but also a reminder of how endlessly I loved and how deeply I was loved. And Mark Gattis says gay people should be allowed to be boring in TV dramas. The British actor and screenwriter, who's gay himself, tells the "Masterpiece Studio" podcast there's been lots of progress in representation over the last 30 years, but he says when a character's sexuality is neither here nor there and they're not having to be everything at once, that's true progress.
