Hey GeekScape, welcome to a brand new GeekScape podcast. I'm Johnson London, your host. If this is your first GeekScape, strap yourselves in for some of our pop culture talk. A little too fast here, Jonathan. Movies, beta games, comic books, TV. All the pop culture goodness that you can fit in your noggin over the course of the next hour or so. We're going to be talking specifically about Marvel's What If Season 3 on this GeekScape. This is an animated series that's in its third season. The finale just aired. It's one of my favorite things that Marvel has done. I think the animation's incredible. I think the writing's very good. And they bring a lot of the live-action actors back to do their characters in the animated versions. They also bring some legacy MC Marvel voice actors back, which we're going to discuss today. There's going to be a lot of spoilers, so be ready for that. Ian's going to join me. He's like our watcher. He sees all things in the pop culture sphere. I'm looking forward to talking to him about that. A lot of pop culture stuff real quick has been going on. Speaking of voice actors, I want to see the Sonic 3 movie. Those movies have no business being as good as they are. Remember when video games and video games TV shows weren't good? But now we have that stuff fall out and it's awesome. The third Sonic movie is as good as the first two Sonic movies if you enjoyed them. I actually can't wait for Ophelia to be old enough to go with theater with me and start watching movies. I'm going to give you some time, but this grown man sat in a theater yesterday. I was like one ticket for the talking animated hedgehog movie, please. And I loved it. There was one more thing I wanted to talk to you guys about real quick. Jason Momoa cast his logo in the Supergirl movie. Ian will have thoughts on that. There was something else. I can't think about it, but Ian will think of some stuff that we'll talk about. In addition to what if season three, which we have a comment here. Kevin McCaffrey said, "I love this series. It's the best thing Marvel has cooking outside of the Deadpool franchise." Well, did you see that friendly neighborhood Spider-Man trailer? That was cool. Tell me that doesn't take a lot of style from the video games as well. The web swinging looks just like the video games. And also one thing that's not from the video games is like the almost 2D-cell shaded style of the animation. I thought it was awesome. The next thing I think we're going to get in the animated Marvel offerings is that friendly neighborhood Spider-Man towards the end of January, and it looks like so much fun. And then I think we also get Marvel Zombies, which is its own mini series in the style of what if. But this is GeeksKate, we're going to be talking about what if season three, which I'll just tell you right now. I enjoy the what ifs. I think they're great. And we'll be right back. Let me hit this little song to start us off, a little theme song. Get it together, London. And we'll be right back with Ian talking what if season three. There will be spoilers as you're warning. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] All right, GeeksKate, it's time to start the show. We are talking what if season three had its finale air yesterday? And I don't remember a whole lot of advertising for this series, but it came out once a day for eight days, and it finished out the three seasons of what if. Speaking of threes, that Sonic 3 was awesome. Jim Carrey playing two roles, he just eats all the scenery. If you like those video games as much as I did with growing up, you're going to love these movies. It's as good as the first two. And I found myself in the theater being like, okay, pop culture shillages, pound for pound, the quality consistency from like the first to the second to the third. People got to talk about Sonic 3, if they're going to talk about Guardians of the Galaxy or any of those trillages. I got to ask Ian if he's seen this. Ian is always talking pop culture and consuming pop culture, more so than me sometimes. So let's take a look. Ian, when are you going to watch the Sonic 3, Sonic the Hedgehog movies? Probably some time after I watch the first two. Dude, they're so much fun. You may not have like. I've never seen them. I think it might be because I'm an adult. If there is, let's listen. I'm the last person to make money for embracing the child. I just had to throw that in. But in fairness, I didn't grow up with Sonic because I ended up older than you. So it was never like, "Oh my God, listen, I absolutely run." I always try to explain to some people, even when you get critical of some of these things, to whatever extent we shit on the Sony movies or else. But still, the kid in me is still like, "I can't believe some of this stuff." Like what we get. It's crazy. But animated, live action, what have you. We get all this stuff realized at a level. Even toys, all the things that we have now. I mean, my wildest dreams is a kid I couldn't have imagined. Not in a million years. It was so exciting. Yeah. And Sonic was the first thing that I ever saved and did chores in my months. And I saved my money for it. Like, Sonic was it. No, I get it. That was mine. But I think I said something to Mario and I loved Mario. Mario was a great. That was fantastic. It was so awesome. It was really great. And I'm hoping for the sequels and all those movies because if they can keep the quality up in the way they've been doing, like, I can't. Can't we remember a time when video game movies weren't good? They recently were very not good. And now they're being, I think. Did you see Borderlands? I did not see Borderlands. Yeah. I heard about it. I dropped on stores this week. And you know, I want to watch it. I meant to see it in the theater and it came once so quickly. Well, I was going to say, I think that a lot of the video game quality coming up. I think that people in Hollywood are taking it more seriously. Not only are the people who grew up with video games now in charge, but I think that Kevin Feige and that crew taking comic books that seriously and treating them the way they have has educated how video games are treated. And the Borderlands, you saw the marketing. That's a galaxy marketing campaign. Totally. Maybe the movie wasn't released in the right time. It was released in August, which, you know, sometimes you're worn out from the blockbusters. And I think it still had to compete with Deadpool Wolverine being dominant in the box office. There were a couple of things that got eaten by Deadpool. If people wanted to see it, it would have done well. Okay. Yeah. It looks like there's kind of fun. I mean, I'm sure I enjoy it, you know, but it had a little bit of a fallout look to it to me. Yeah. A fallout was great. A fallout was fantastic. A fallout was great. So there was that real quick. I didn't say this in the thread, but I'll just say it publicly on Geekscape because we're in a thread with you, Christian, Jordan, and I. Jordan's never been on Geekscape. Christian is trying to take over Geekscape. Has Justin been on Geekscape? Yeah. Justin's been on to talk about the video games, like the Spider-Man video games and stuff. But Jason Momoa gets cast as Lobo. And his reaction is a thumbs down. Jason Momoa is Lobo. Who's reaction was in our thread? Yeah. I shared the deadline article that Jason Momoa did. Oh, we're calling it out? Yeah, I am. Jason Momoa is cast as Lobo. If you look at the thread, he gives it the Apple emoji thumbs down. He does. And Ian, I didn't want to say anything on the thread because I might as well just call him out to a couple hundred people here. Yeah. Yeah. Jason Momoa is Lobo. When he was cast as Aquaman, I was like, okay, maybe it's the Eric Larson Aquaman. I kind of get the lot that. But like he's Lobo. Sure. That is Jason Momoa was supposed to cast. What is Justin about that he just doesn't like Jason Momoa or fun or comic accurate casting? It could be any of those things. He's doing these Lobo. Listen, you know, honestly, it's what's interesting to me about it. It's like, are they going to make like generally Jason Momoa, you know, the appeal is, you know, like women like him because he, you know, he's attractive. And it's like, I almost feel like as Lobo, it's like, how do you make him less attractive? But maybe not, you know what I mean? Wade Wilson is a scarred up, you know, disease. Yeah. And like in like women are like, I love that Deadpool. I got to tell you, it's fine. I mean, seeing Guy Gardner in the trailer, seeing Mr. Terrific, seeing all this stuff. Like James Gunn's just pulling from the pages in a way that we have not seen. By the way, it's insane. And he gets bigger as Mr. Terrific. So here for it. Awesome. Yeah. Awesome. And he's a great actor. So, you know, that's exciting to me. Dude, I'm excited about this. And, well, we're going to move on to what if season three, but Ian, the absolute Batman and absolute Wonder Woman. Absolute Superman is one that I did not pick up because I heard it was like, okay. I mean, I mean, dude, absolute Batman and absolute Wonder Woman are the shit. They've got me reading DC again. They're really good. They're really, really good. Okay. Well, Ian, I can hear you tipping on your keyboards. You're sending emails. You're doing business. Right now? Are you sending, are you sending memes to Justin right now? No, no, no memes. I should be calling Justin out while we're on it. Hey, Justin, you know, we're talking about you right here right now. I love Justin, but Jason Momoa is a low bow. Like, that's a great casting. I like it. Yeah. I mean, okay. Yeah. No more thump-thumping on your desk, all right? I can hear that stuff. It's driving me crazy. We're here for one thing. We're here to tuck. What if season three and we've got to talk about this thing. You know, I love what if season three. I'm the one that told you, like, dude. You were ranting about it. Yeah. And honestly, can we just talk real quick about it? I don't understand why. Because last season also, they dropped this way, like this. Like it feels like a burnoff, but I don't know. Maybe that worked for that. I don't get it. Not advertised. I mean, if you're going to do that, if it was a burnoff, why would you continue with these little zombies in a few months? Why would you continue with-- I know. That's what I wonder. Were they far down the line with them? Or do you want to make room for Captain America 4, which is coming up in a couple weeks? Where do you want to put the Disney Marvel advertising? Well, by the way, let's talk about this, too. Okay. Jumping into what if season three, one of the things that really resonated for me is two different episodes, I think-- it was fine for me, but I think what had a much stronger appeal if Ironheart, which was supposed to have come out a long time ago, had already come out. One episode deals strongly with the Ironheart character, and one episode deals a lot with the character of the hood, which is the antagonist in Ironheart. Yeah. In that series, I'd like to see the light of day. And I truly think that I haven't seen that series before, I mean, if we had, you know, and I know a bit about it, I don't want to say what I may have known about it. Right. But the hood, Anthony Ramos' hood is the antagonist, and the hood is-- Yeah. He's like a street level gangster, like one of the Kingmen's-- almost a henchman, but he gets this hood and the hood allows him to have these powers. The hood is-- the actual physical hood is the character in a way. It gives him powers. Correct. And yes, but recently, actually, even with the hood, got-- was it to close riders' powers for a bit. So you get into a lot of, you know, with the hood, there's definitely a bunch of demonic stuff going on. Yeah. Yeah. It's like a deal with the devil kind of thing. I would almost like to see just a story where the hood takes on Strange's cape. No, same way that Dr. Strange's cape as the mind of its own is a character in itself. Yeah. But, you know-- It's not a joke. I think that that would be a fun little-- I mean, if they're going to make Marvel Pet's story lines and like DC Pet's story lines, why not have the, like, you know, the character costumes, the hood, the cloak? Sure. Have them go up against each other, because when you see the animated hood in this episode-- I think-- It's a villain. You should pitch that. Okay. I'll do it. I'll do it. You'll do it. You'll write it. Who else? Like, hey, guys. Yeah. So Dr. Strange's cloak, the hood, and they're obviously our enemies, right? It didn't-- didn't Mjolnir have its own story line where it was like-- Mjolnir or Ascension? Mjolnir. Mm-hmm. It was not-- it was not, like, Viben with Thor for a stretch. It does what it wants to do sometimes. Mjolnir, Ascension, they-- Jason Aaron developed the whole notion of Mjolnir being sentient. Mm-hmm. So yeah, that's there, you know? Sure. Okay. Okay. Just wait-- and we'll just wait and forget that Mjolnir could shield to be like us. I was just thinking of a cat-maker shot. Not a wire, I'm out on my-- He's using me to cook things. Yeah. So-- Oh, can I just say, FDA wants me to say on air. Yeah, go for it, please. Okay, because we've got a little-- Yes, it's a word. Okay. No Sony Marvel movie can touch the spirit. I understand F.J.'s emotional ties to the spirit. It's hard to think that maybe you wasted an entire year of your life working on a project. First of all, I think it was more than a year. Second of all-- Oh, actually-- Oh, no. I think that-- I mean, first of all, he clearly didn't watch the episode because we actually really go off on the spirit in the episode, right? I mean, we literally said-- I mean, that's the thing is we went into it again-- Sorry for those of us who actually want us to talk about what if. But the last special we did, we talked about the Sony Marvel movies and specifically Craven. And we went going, all right, screw, we're going to do this. And we looked at it as, all right, it's the spirit part two. We're going to go in, we're going to have a good time. We had a good time. But we didn't hate the movie. We went in thinking it was going to be like a mystery science 3,000 kind of-- we're panning it. And considering we were literally the only two people in the theater, we fully spoke during it. But it wasn't that kind of experience. Now, what if, generally, through all three seasons has been generally entertaining? Even episodes that I've gone into going like, oh, do I really care about this? They end up having a surprise. I mean, by the way, the Howard the Duck episode was gone really-- I mean, the one this season and then you get birdie out of this. So let's talk about it because I think that the season actually starts with Miley's favorite, the one that's basically the Pacific Room episode with the Hulkbuster Avengers. A Pacific Room in Godzilla. Yeah. And that's fun in all. It sounds cool, but it didn't have a lot of bearing on a lot of stuff. And I thought it was fun, but-- But the Hulk has Godzilla. It's fun. It's fun stuff. It's kind of interesting. Yeah. It's got its own thing. All right, let me just say this right away for a second about Muddeth. And I don't know if it's as big a deal to you, but every time I watch this show since it started, what's really amazed me, that even Lucas some didn't do this, is like the voice actors were for the most part with a couple of every now and then. And you can't even identify why, but they don't get a couple of the actors, but they get most of them. They get most of them, yeah. But I think both Captain America and Iron Man, they didn't get Evans or Downey, but they get Hemsworth. And they get Hiddleston. Obviously, Hayley Atwell has been like a major recurring on this show, you know? And it's modernized for character. Like we have Captain Carter in the MCU now because of her. But even the characters that were like one-offs, what are most like all kinds of characters, that it almost wouldn't even matter if they got them, they got them. And this is my favorite Seth Greenroll, Tower to Duck. I mean, I went into the Tower to the Duck episode. First off, my favorite episode of the season is Stan Alone. I love the overarching story of these. I mean, because the Big Bad villain from episode one, the evil Strange, is back at the finale of this one. You have the Ultron, which is the true Ultron to me. He's like what Ultron would have been in season two, that Ultron's back. Yeah. And you know, the finale of this one. And so I like that they have carryovers, the Carter characters. Because if we're serious finale, they brought it all together in a nice way. And then brought back the Hori, Storm is voiced by the original Storm actress who's been doing this '93. And so it's Storm with the Power of Four, which was done in the comics, you know? And here you get to see it move and you get to see it do some bad-ass stuff. And then by the X-Men music, the animated X-Men music when Storm is, you know, a screen-going action. If you're going to do it for Ms. Marvel, you got to do it for Storm. Yeah. But Alice and Celie Smith doing Storm is become the iconic voice for Storm. Yeah. Like you got to hear her voice when you hear Storm. She's fantastic. No, nothing against Hallie Berry, but when you hear Storm, it's Alice and Celie Smith's voice. I agree. So I was looking for some research and there's a deal on the internet who fucking hates what. I'm not going to tell you what website this is, but he says, what if season three is everything wrong with the MCU? It's unwatchable trash. The stories are nonsensical featuring characters. No one cares about our likes and are full of self-inserts by those woke creators who are responsible for the series. First off, when you say woke, I already know where this is coming from. Yeah. I only watched the first three episodes and after watching the first episode, I found myself fast-forwarding through all the nonsense and the remaining episodes that I watched. First off, the first episode to me was the weakest, but I have zero plans to watch throughout this day's season. Yeah, it's that bad. I'm glad it got canceled too. It didn't get canceled. It was a finite storyline. They ended the storyline. Can I say something on this one? Yeah. It's always entertaining to me. Wait, he says, fake Captain America, Sam Wilson, if you just say fake, he's not fake Captain America. He's Captain America. Yeah. He's Captain America. Yeah. This dude doesn't read a fucking comic book. This dude has been Captain America several times and then he says, the next episode is about Agatha. Why? Who asked for this character? It's a horrendous episode. Agatha was a great series. It's old Hollywood meets Bollywood and you've got Kingo from the Eternals. He's not going to hate on the Eternals. The Eternals aren't a problem. They're one of Jack Kirby's best creations. Yeah. They just weren't brought to film. They just weren't brought to screen. And by the way, I don't even necessarily, in that particular episode, it's important to understand, you know, the ultimate version of the end of the episode. I fucking loved that episode. Yeah, the episode was great. And the thing is, the movie wasn't done well. There's aspects of the movie. They're decent. And to be clear for anyone that doesn't know it, one of the major things about that movie and the fact about that dead celestial still being there is going to be a major plot line for Captain America coming out in, you know, a month and a half. And I thought Kingo was-- You know, we're six weeks in Captain America. We're six weeks from Captain America. And Heidi and I have to decide whether or not we are going to get our first babysitter for a failure. Dude, it's Valentine's Day. Hey, Heidi? I hope unlike Madam Webb that it opens on the 13th. Heidi, Captain America 4 is on Valentine's Day. So we just really have to discuss that. It's a date night. It's Captain America 4. Wait, so you asked me if I'm probably busy then? Yeah. Because I would trust them. Listen, listen, listen. She would trust you guys to babysit, but I think Ian's going to be the one going to the movie with me. So it's a-- So bright. It's quite the quandary. Here's the trick. It's opening on the 14th. Yeah. I don't know if that means we'll be able to go night at 13. Okay. Well-- I don't know. They haven't said yet. Heidi and I made a list of who we would trust to babysit the baby. And we haven't let anybody babysit the baby yet. You and Stephanie are on the list, but I think you would be in the theater next to me. Or going out for Valentine's Day. We'll do a little bit of this. It's Valentine's Day. I got to see not fake Captain America of Sam Wilson on the big screen. I got to see Latino Falcon on the big screen. So listen. So here's my point. This whole, you know, you see this? I mean, I laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh. People go, "Oh, now Star Trek's become woke." Star Trek was always-- Star Trek is the most shit ever. Yeah. But well, again, people throw that word around basically, and I'm sorry. As you said, as soon as you hear something say that, you know where they're coming from. It's this really weird, I guess, right wing sort of prejudice and chauvinistic mindset. Anything, basically, correct me if I'm wrong, anything that's promoting the rights of strongly pushing minorities, and minorities, including gender minorities, you know? Compassionate, considerate. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, pushing storylines where people are actually regarded as equal and white sis males aren't just the only people in power is considered woke, right? So to be clear, Marvel has always done that. Yeah. Anything that's like close to Jesus' teachings is probably woke. Anybody who puts Jesus' teachings as a bumper sticker? Yeah. It's probably not. But, you know, I was actually explaining yesterday of all times about Star Wars. You know, and talking about the joke of how many memes do you see about people going, "Oh, no, Star Wars is so woke," or this or that, or, you know, like, they'll-- Yeah. Like stormtroopers. Like, think about it. These. Yeah. Like, literally they call the soldiers stormtroopers, which are what the Nazis' soldiers were, and even the officers all dressed the way Nazis dressed. Well, were you that, and that-- It's not that veiled. The Nazis were bad. Remember when it was a given that Nazis were bad? Well, they were. Remember those days? Nazis were, like, it was uncontestable, the Nazis were bad. Now, they're just-- When did that fucking change? Now, they're just uneducated Americans. Um, what's that one scene where he was like, "Are we the baddies?" The Nazi search realizing, "Wait, wait, are we the bad guys?" And that's kind of been happening in actual politics here with it. Would you have, like, Elon and Vivek having, like, the uneducated-- Half of the GOP started attacking them for the H-1B-1 visas, and they're like, "Wait, wait a minute, it's wrong, but I don't think people are coming from the dance to watch the political discourse." I was saying, it's nice to see-- Yeah, I started reading this review that called it "Unwatchable Trash." And the second he started saying, like, "Fake, Captain America, Sam Wilson." I'm like, "Well, this guy's a fucking illiterate racist." Well, let's talk about this for a second, because he-- He didn't even bother to finish the season. Like, don't review it then. Well, listen, though. Now, it is interesting that the exiles at this point are-- it's women. Well, I wanted to ask you, Ian, because there's a couple of things that happened in this series, and, like, Quentin Bailey in the chat says, "I live for Birdie the Duck." The episode I thought was going to be a throwaway, which-- There were a couple episodes of the season that were continuations of episode last season. If Thor was an only child, it was one of them, and it had, like, Marty Thor, but in it-- Awesome. It was like a throwaway joke, where Darcy ends up with Howard the Duck. Right. And now you have an episode where they have an egg that is their baby, and everybody's after it, because it was born during a big cosmic event. Right? Right. And it has a powerful-- Convergence. It's a convergence. And now everybody wants it. The collector wants it. The grandmaster wants it. Everybody wants it. And you have this-- I mean, I actually got stressed out having a baby. I was like, "Oh, my God. Everybody's trying to get the baby. Are they going to be able to get the baby? Are they going to smash?" There's a big chase for the baby, and then you find out the baby has this big power when the egg hatches. You have this cute baby birdie-looking thing, the character's birdie. But what's important here is what's on the chest of birdie. It's the insignia. Yeah. This is the first time in the MCU that we've seen the Star Brand. The Star Brand's an interesting thing, because Marvel did this thing in the '80s, this new universe idea. I mean, they did it way back when they've now gone out a few times where they said, "All right, we're going to do a separate universe. It's different characters, whatever else." They did that. What's that? Like the ultimate universe, right? Yeah, it was more like that. But this was in the '80s, and these were not even tied to our characters. Not at all. This was like MCU 2 in the '80s when they did young Avengers in Mayday Parker. MCU was the '90s. They're just going to start a new universe. No, MCU was late, I want to say. MCU was like the 2000s, wasn't it? I think it was '98 or '99 or something, yeah. But anyway, continue. So anyway, they had some concepts, and then later decided to just bring into the regular Marvel universe. What were some of the Star Brand into the Avengers? What were some of the characters you got in the '80s? What was it? Honestly, I didn't think it was that good, but Star Brand was interesting. Okay. Was she part of the team? It wasn't even a she was. It was a he. It could be anyone. Okay. So it's almost like a Phoenix force. Yes. It's a cosmic force. But it chooses a protector of Earth. It's almost like the Earth giving the power kind of thing. So yeah, it's a protector effect. That's the Star Brand. That's what it was. I think it was along with someone else. Because in Jason Aaron's Avengers, he brought the Star Brand into the team. And the whole "Cat of Star Brand" at one point. And all these different characters had Star Brand. You reminded me of, did you read the Valiant books much? I didn't read a lot of the Valiant books, no. So the Valiant has this idea of its idea of a Geomancer. Okay. Which was, you know, so basically, it was the protector of Earth that had these mystical powers. It was sort of Valium's idea of their trust and supreme. Yeah. And to talk to Planet, basically they had mystical abilities. And they brought in this idea for a while what they had that they had. The Eternal Warrior was always the protector of the Geomancer. But what I thought was really cool of Valiant, because in Valiant, you had the Eternal Warrior who was immortal, but he had two brothers that were immortal. One was a time traveler. Okay. But the other one was just a drunk. You know, Armstrong. And eventually what they said is he becomes Geomancer, because he's the Geomancer. He always should have been, but he didn't want to do it. Right. Because he's eternal. So instead of like a Geomancer dying, now he's eternal, and he's the Geomancer. And in DC, you have the green, which is like Swamp Thing. Yes. And exactly. You know. Protect the Earth. Yes. But of course, in DC, you have the green. You have the gray. You have the red. Yes. So, you know, you have different beings. You have for different aspects of nature. But in Marvel, the Star Brand is a protector of specifically Earth. Yeah. So, I mean, that's what they did. That's what Aaron did. And I feel like... But I compared them... I guess I get rid of it recently. But somebody who did not know what the Star Brand was. I compared it to, as a cosmic entity, similar to the Phoenix Force. And I was like, okay, that's the Star Brand. Yes. Okay. I think that's the introduction of the Star Brand to the MCU. I would think that's a big thing. Yeah. I think that's big. I think that's cool. And they... In the grown-up birdie, who's introduced in episode seven, you see as episode eight, they got Natasha Leon to voice her. Mm-hmm. And I think Natasha Leon even looks like the character. And now she's got these cosmic powers. She can fly ships. She can tinker stuff. And Tony Stark levels. She can build spaceships. That's all cool. I want to see her in the doomsday. I want to see Natasha Leon live action birdie. Mm-hmm. Because you have Kehori, who was introduced in season two, the Native American character. Now Kehori's now in the comics. Kehori's back in episode seven and episode eight. I'm building... Well, they put Kehori in the comics, but they still had her being altered. So basically the core, they put in the comics. It was just the core from what if. Right. They didn't... When I saw that comic, I was like, oh, great. They put her in the... In the six one six, and that's not what they did. They didn't do it. It was part of a voices line, yeah. Yeah. She just acknowledged that they've created her and looks like it always bring her over. But mind you, Kehori's used to traveling to different universes. So it's fine. And that's what the story was. You know? I would... She can. I mean, DC just had a little bit of success bringing over a cartoon character into the live action or the cartoon... The comic books, a little character called... I don't know, Harley Quinn? Yeah. Just do it. Do it. I think Marvel's done it. I think those two characters. Marvel's done it. Jonathan Marvel's done it. X 23. X 23. X 23. Yeah. X 23 was originally in X-Men Evolution, and now we've seen her in live action Logan. Live action Deadpool Wolverine. Well, she went from that to the original NYX. Okay. And then, and then went to, you know, after NYX, they developed their embroider into the X-Men books. And now she's a major, major character. She says she's got a live action in Logan, and then followed up in Deadpool Wolverine. And presumably we'll see her again. I'd love to. Yeah. I love that character. And in her whole speech in Deadpool Wolverine was the heart of the whole movie. I love it. Yeah. So we have those two new, like those two characters. Corey Birdie, those are what-if characters. The other character they bring in is Storm. Storm with the God of Thunder powers. The four of them with Captain Carter. And honestly, if I had a big, my biggest complaint prior to that is that not enough X-Men characters in those what-ifs, but you know, obviously the MCU and how far are they going to go with it, you know? Well, Ian, they call themselves, they don't call themselves the exiles. The watchers call them exiles. Who are the exiles? Because I see online people are starting to call them the MCU's exiles. I don't think they are. Yes, they are. The exiles were as a comic. And they did it post-age of apocalypse with the one side of the link. With the character name Link. Yeah, right. And it was a character which she could, I mean sort of somewhat the Corey with you. She would jump, you know, like teleport. But in space or teleport in space, but then they gave her a device and they would jump in universes. Okay. In the age of apocalypse, we briefly saw her, but she died in 616. Okay. And then right after that, in the age of apocalypse, she was actually trained by Sabretooth, who in the age of apocalypse was actually an ex-map. Okay. It was actually decent. Never really made sense to me. I didn't see how Xavier dying, and even if it was the 50s or 60s, would have changed on that much. But that's what they said. They basically had Sabretooth acting like Wolverine, you know? Okay. And it was decent. It's a bad guy. Not exactly a bad guy, but not aligned with the X-Men, but whatever. So Blink then does her own series, the Exile? She has her own series, and she collects other Marvel characters in different universes that are doomed or ending. And ultimately they're trying, you know, the overarching story is for them to, you know, they're saving realities and that kind of thing. So, you know, and so she gets a morph, which is great, because morph is a character that, you know, we had in the X and the Animated series. But in the comics, morph the change. I can died very long time ago. Early X minish, I think. Early 42 or something like that. Oh, wow. Before the modern X-Men came along. Long before you. So she has morph as part of that team. He's a main character. I mean, for a while, like, you know, they have her Hercules variant. They have Wolverine variants. I mean, they do a lot of different things. The Excel is a great book. Quinn Bailey says the Excels had a rolling roster. I imagine they're, you know, quite a few of them. Yeah. Jim Winick wrote it. That was a device that helped to jump realities. And Judd Winick wrote it, who is responsible for the frigging term. I love Judd. Judd's been on Geekscape. That's great. I love Judd. And Judd Winick actually ran with After Hush, the original Hush. Yeah. And then, where they tease the idea of Jason Todd being alive as the Red Hood. And then they said, no, it was a tape. Yeah. Yeah. It was Tommy Elliott. Winick said, you know what? No, this is a good idea. And he just said, no, we're going to say it was real. We're bringing back Jason Todd. Yeah. Okay. So because the Exiles team, if you define the Exiles team, is a team that jumps realities, you're going to call these four women the Exiles for the MCU. Yeah. That's what they did. Let's do it. I finally heard the reference given by the Watchers as a derogatory term. Like these Exiles. No, no, that's the team. At the time when it came out, it was spelled with an E, not an X, but there was a strong X-Men lean because Link was just this breakout character in Angel of Apocalypse who, when that ended, didn't exist anymore. So it was a way to save her and keep her going. Okay. So you brought more, so you had a couple of that X-Men characters, you know. No, he's Exiles. Yeah. So interestingly, for me, from the get-go when they did that with Captain Carter, to me, that was the Exiles. You know, look, they were doing, it was a team, you know, but you didn't have X-Men characters. Yeah. You didn't have X-Men characters. Whereas the Exiles as a book felt like it was starting because it was really jumping off of Angel of Apocalypse. It was starting out of that X-Men side of the Marvel Universe, even though it brought in other characters, too. So now this, what if, introduces both the Exiles? So we got Star. Yeah. And we got Star Brand. And it's officially the Exiles because you got an X-Men character, you got Storm, voiced by the Storm, that incredible actress. Yeah. No. Hearing Alice and Celie Smith, the Storm, I can hear that for the rest of my life. She's amazing. Okay. So Ian, in their battle with The Watchers, which I texted you, I was like, "Holy shit, dude. The finale is just like Kirby-esque cosmic dots." What's cool? Celebration. It's a total slugfest for the majority of it. And The Watchers start stripping them from all realities. The Watchers are like, "We're not just going to kill you guys for breaking this, the rules of like, first off, they give themselves Watcher powers so that they can not die." Which was cool. I mean, you know. It's cool. And now the Watchers want to kill a Watcher, the original, the Watcher that we know from 6-1-6. Did you try to just do the oath and see if you got the powers? I didn't get the powers. I'm not wise enough. And then when they start stripping and killing the four exiles in all the realities, and you start seeing versions of them casting off, right, like they're killing these versions of them from all these realities. Which kind of just say, I thought that was cool and visually cool, but it sort of felt like these guys are bitching about like all these things they do more than that. And now they're just going to wipe them around like, like immediately I'm thinking of, you know, all the, you know, the Loki TV series and, you know, and the idea of pruning. Pruning, yeah. Like, like, so you're just going to completely up in reality, right? Yeah, they went from watching to like, no, let's just fuck everything, like, I'm going to fuck. And at no point does Loki, who is in the center of all reality, the nexus of realities which you saw in, you know, Monster vs. Amanda's or Dr. Strange would have been great if he stepped in. But that's the other thing. Great. There's a lack of continuity of that not crossing into all that. I wanted to see the nexus reality is I wanted to see a little bit of Loki involvement because we did see a Loki in these we saw, we saw ice Loki, which is cool. We saw the Loki that never was Odin's son. That was cool. In the birdie episode, the, the, how are the duck episode? It also would have been cool to see a man thing be like, yo, I mean, the nexus of our realities. What's going on here? So here, I've got a list of all the different variants that we saw of Captain Carter win the executioner. Yeah. Okay. Look, we got a Black Knight version of Peggy Carter. We got a saber tooth version. I saw the Alexa version. I saw a deathlock version. Yeah. And in an Asgardian version. In Storm get stripped. There's a Black Panther variant of her. I noticed that birdie got a Nova. I know. It's a nova. The cartoon birdie that looks a lot like her dad or looks like Donald Duck. Kohori had some awesome ones. She had an apocalypse one in a Western one in a Captain America. And then you saw her in a X-Men costume, which I looked like a new mutants costume to me. Yeah. And then, and then yeah, it was awesome. It was the right. It was yellow and blue. Another Kohori variant can be spotted in the episode, which looks like cloak, because it has the stripes with the cosmic black with the blue. And then in the final moments, you got some really crazy ones. And you saw them start to zoom towards camera faster and faster. Yeah. The first one you see is the six armed Spider-Man. That's in the comics. That's a great samurai ghost writer, like Robbie Reyes. You saw Punisher Riri Williams. So it's the first time we've seen the Punisher that's not. And again, like to me, they pushed Riri Williams pretty hard in this season, as if they expected us to already be really familiar with her, not that little parent in Black Panther Tit. Yeah. You know? I mean, it should have come out in 2024. It would have helped us. Well, that's be real. And I mean, you know, I mean, the expectation is you get that show and they're leading to young Avengers, or they're probably called champions, but it's happening. Right. They're expected to be a movie, not a TV show. And you know, listen, this is the problem that Marvel has, and we've said this before, so it marvels. I don't know, the shows shouldn't work to give you background on stuff from movies you already want. So don't do that. I don't know that it's working like that. Let's smack it on table. Oh, sorry. And you smack the table. Okay. So Ian, we got, I'm going to keep going. Gamora in a wedding dress. Okay. Blade serving is moon night. Weapon X Thanos is one that the internet went crazy with. Did you catch that one? I didn't catch that one. It was Thanos in the weapon X helmet with two, with the claws. We saw Kinga. I don't know. I can't imagine what that is. It was hilarious. It's in there. It's the one I caught. I was like, I can't go wearing an Ironman suit. Yeah. An amalgamation of Miss Marvel and lost. Yes. Source Supreme. Source Supreme maestro. Amalgamation of Howard the Duck and Scarlet Witch. That was basically Howard the Duck wearing Scarlet, which is like headdress. Dragon Warrior Hawkeye, Silver Star for Jubilee. I caught that. That was weird. A scroll with Catherine America costume Wakandan shield. I saw that one also. Cersei and Dane Whitman dancing together. That's cool. That's an eternal shout out. Yeah. Dead pull with massive guns. More massive than he already uses. Star Lord is Shang-Chi. Loki is a sheriff in unspecified Dr. Strange variant. Yeah. It's cool. Yeah. The Six Arms Spider-Man was one of them. I'm like, ah, right out of the comics. Right out of the animated series. We got it. It's an amazing Spider-Man 101, right? I loved it. So people hating on the what if, I gotta tell you, it's a total celebration of us as fans reading comics our entire life and seeing all these different versions. In some, we may see in the MCU again, I mean, again, I'd like to see Birdie, I'd like to see Kohori in the actual comics, in the actual 616, and then also in the MCU somehow because it's a good character and we're going to have some real multiversal jumping around with doomsday. Look, Captain Carter is coming back. My biggest disappointment in the episode is I hated the idea of like, I didn't quite get, why did she have to be sacrificed? She sacrificed herself to get it, but I was, I really hope that they bring her back. But regardless, there's going to be a Captain Carter. Yes, she's already been cast for doomsday, right? Yeah. What I think it's going to be, and I haven't heard this, what I think it's going to be, I think they're going to, it's going to be like Chris Evans, Captain America as a nomad. I think it's going to be, either he's already put the stones back or he's about to put the stones back, something like that. He's still young and they grab him and her so she's young also. Yeah. So it's not going to, I could be wrong. I don't think it's going to be her with the super soldier serum. I think it's going to be Peggy Carter with him, right? At that point, so he's not old, he was right after end game or soon after end game. Right. But it's possible. Yeah. It's like 1950s. And they're going to pull him out to be involved in whatever it goes on. That could be cool. One thing I wanted. I'm here for it. When you see like her shield, which got snapped in this episode and it got three constituted and there's a power going through it. I know it would never would have happened. I wanted to see it as she went into the light. I wanted to see it form into a tower. I wanted it to actually become Captain Britain's tower of the multiverse because the Captain Britain's core is also like a multiverse. She's not Captain Britain. I know, dude, she's Captain Carter. Yes. And that's why. Well, by the way, that's why she's Captain Carter and she's not, you know, Steve was Captain America, but she's not Captain Britain. You know, or Captain England because Captain Britain's a different thing. Do you have to pay Alan Moore for it? No. I mean, he's not happy about that, but he's not happy about that. Alan Moore created Captain Britain and for the pages of the British publications of Marvel Comics and he got brought over. He became part of an X-Men group himself. Well, ultimately in the next job. I mean, he was in, I think the first regular Marvel appearance was Marvel theme up. I want to say 65. In a Sylex brother, he is in charge of the Captain Britain course, which is in a tower in the center of realities, which Jason Aaron also threw into his storyline for the Avengers and they're in charge of policing their realities. So a lot of multiverse stuff, yeah, a lot of stuff going on. I did want to see that tower though. I did want to see the Nexus in realities. I want to see man thing. No, there were definitely a couple of places where, you know, but look, it's the MC, it's not the comics. So they didn't do everything they could have done, but they did quite a lot. You happy with it? Yeah, it was very entertaining, you know. I, I, episode seven, I was waiting to episode eight. I liked it. I didn't like it as much as you. I thought the choreography on the fight was incredible. I thought it was so much fun to watch and the stakes were big. It's cosmic. It was weird for me watching watchers slugging it out and then, you know, and then these basically humans get the watchers powers and then they fight them like they've had them all. I didn't, you know, you know, let's say that's a Nick Fury, Nick Fury got watcher powers, okay? Yeah, it just didn't, it didn't ring as true for me. I, and as you said, every time we keep expecting, you know, causing a low, it's the same thing at that ball over him, conflict locally doesn't show up, you know, God, Loki, and it's key, I keep feeling like they did this multiverse thing and God look is out there, but no one's touching it, which means they were told they can't, right? Right. And that just, it seems a little weird to me. Oh, we got to see God, Loki in that's the question, right? Not fantastic for, but in doomsday secret work or, or see, I don't know, you would expect so. Okay. Right. Let's put some order to this whole multiverse thing again. I think so. If it's not going to be you, who's going to be? It's not going to be me. Okay. We're going to see. Listen, maybe if I take that watcher off, I can do something about it. I just want to see world by night again too. Well, I'm just, by the way, it's, you got to complain. It's like, so they just take an oath, like there's nothing other than them saying the words and they just get the powers. Yeah. I mean, they got to be. You just have to know the word, right? Words, right? That small potan, where's the power coming from that saying the words gives it to you? The watchtower. Like that, that's, that's one of the things that, that I loved in Dr. Strange, this idea that you're being, you're granted power, you know, from the cost. Yes. And there does need to be a cost and it's coming from somewhere and their power is being granted from someone. Then who's above it? That's what actually what was kind of cool at the end of the, of the show and what they say about Peggy being gone is like, but maybe there was something that they don't even know about beyond, you know, so they're introducing the yonder. Yeah. And that there was a visual cue, no, there was a visual cue, well, by the way, the idea of the beyonders that beyonder is beyond is power even beyond the universe, right? But there was a visual cue at the end there of the walkthrough with eternity, right? You caught that? Yeah. They didn't say it, but visually they represented it. So that was interesting. We've seen eternity in versions of this MCU, right? Yeah. There was a glimpse of eternity in Thor 4. Was there not? Yeah. So we've seen versions of eternity. And then when that one watcher, the execution was like spinning his head, he looked like, what's the name of that one cosmic entity with the three buildings? The living tribunal. The living tribunal. I was like, oh, this is cool. That stuff I love. I love the Kirby cosmic stuff, which is why I'm an internals fan. I love the internals. I wish they were better represented in the MCU. But having Kingo in this season, having these shows at least show that. And they referenced all the others. I thought it was great. And I'm into that stuff. So. And again, they got kumano jani. I mean, it's crazy that they get all these people for other shows. Does Marvel Zombies tie into it? What if? Or is it its own thing? It's been from what if? Yeah. It's a spinner from what if. And by the way, I'm not sure if it's going to be the specific Marvel Zombies from that episode or a different universe with zombies. And we get the maker. We get the maker from it. Don't know how to. That's a deep cut for some people. But if you're reading. Are you reading Ultimate Spider-Man? That's what I'm reading. Yes, right. Ultimate Spider-Man. I'm not reading all the Ultimates because I couldn't hang with some of that stuff. But the ultimate X-Men seems pointless. Yes. Like it's kind of like out there and whatever. I'm sorry. You should be reading the Ultimates though. But listen, the Ultimate Spider-Man, the reason I'm reading it is the character writing is so good. So good. But I'm into that. Read Ultimates also. Ultimate Black Panther, I'm liking and I do see where it will tie in. I read a couple of issues of both of those. Yeah. Ultimate X-Men. I'm like, I don't even want this. It just seems like I don't know. It's fun for the art. The art's good. The art's interesting. I'll peach from a muck or whatever. I don't know. Beyond the absolute Batman, absolute one of them that I'm enjoying and I know you liked absolute Spider-Man. He's like a cyberpunk type thing. Our absolute Superman, Joshua Williamson's GI Joe. Two issues. I'm behind. I'm behind. Well, issue two is it just came out. No, no. But I'm behind a couple of months on all the energon universe stuff. Dude. I've actually really been enjoying it, but I got behind reading. The question before we wrap it has nothing to do with what if, but Kirkman was part of the think tank that was brought in to Paramount to kind of think about what the future of the Transformers and Hasbro properties and it never saw fruition in the films, but that was the idea was to create a Marvel universe type thing, MCU connected universe, but with Hasbro and Paramount properties. I don't think, I mean, supposedly there were some other big names with Kirkman. Is that all we're seeing now, like, play out with the Skybound stuff? Because it's really great. Did you see the last Transformers movie? Transformers One was my favorite movie of 2020. No, no, no. The one before it, um... Beast Wars? Yeah. It wasn't Beast Wars. It wasn't Beast Wars. Yeah. The Beast. Rise of the Beast. Right. Yeah. So the end of that sets up GI Joe in it. I saw that. I saw that. But it was never going to happen. I don't think it's going anywhere, but they did try. But I got to tell you Ian, Transformers One was awesome. I need to watch it now. I get them. It's so great. It was one of my favorites of last year, if not my favorite, along with the Sonic 3. No. Just like in the kids stuff. People are like, "What did you think of these Oscar contenders?" And I'm like, you know, it ain't my Oscar contenders. My Oscar's contender is Transformers One, Sonic 3. Right there. I don't know which one wins. Wolverine the Deadpool. Wolverine the Deadpool. Those ones. Those are my three Oscar picks right there. I'm basically, yeah, I'm the human equivalent of an MTV. Can you hate him for a supporting actor? Oh my God. Dude, you know I yelled out, "Holy shit!" when Blade walks across that screen. You kidding me with that? The Day Walker. What a movie. What a movie. Give that the Oscar. All right. I don't want to hear about nothing else. I want to give that the Oscar. What's fun is still trying to... Arm out of the landscapes? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Let's go. Give him the Oscar. Give Channing Tatum the Oscar right now. For his Cajun. Sure. All right. And I love doing this with you. We got another series wrapping up, man. I'm talking about... I don't know how many episodes are left. The Star Wars. Yes. I love it. I think too. Loving the skeleton crew, dude. Loving it. Yeah. I think we get one tomorrow and the next week is it. I'm telling you, keep making Star Wars for kids. Don't worry about the 40-some-month-year-olds, the 50-some-month-year-olds. Ah. Keep making Star Wars for kids. It's great. The end of the last episode? Awesome. Dude. I'm loving Jude Law. I'm loving the series. We got to talk about that when it finalizes a Cape House. Yes. It's fun. I'm down. Okay. And then we got a little thing called Captain America Brave New World. Six weeks, right? I wish it was four. Okay. Yeah. I think it's six. All right. I'm adding a look at a calendar, but I feel like that's about right, right? Okay. Yeah. I mean, search your heart. I think it's six weeks from Friday. Right. Right. I love you, man. Geeks gave us, we have conversations like this all the time. Like this last episode, if you go back on the feed, you're going to see the Craven episode where we talked about the, we ranked the six Sony movies for our friend, FJ, and let me tell you, I'm going to go ahead and extend the six Sony movies to seven, and I'm going to put the spirit at number seven. I don't think the spirit was ever Marvel. Dude, the second I walked out of the spirit, I wanted to never think about the spirit again, but I've thought about the other six Marvel movies from Sony sense. So like the spirit is just a movie I forget for years happened until FJ messages me and says something about it. Or I go to a bad movie with you and you're like, remember, it's like that time we saw the spirit. Yeah, man. And I love Will Eisner's creation and I wish he got a better at bat on screen. And maybe he will again soon, but I think the spirit is when you told me, Ian, stop putting butter on the popcorn and the reason he was doing that was because he was trying to kill himself. So you never had to watch this. My selfie ever since then. So he gave us where if you can't find original Will Eisner in the spirit stuff, which you should just go out and find it. The Darwin cook stuff is fantastic too. Yeah. The character is phenomenal. Don't under any circumstances though. Watch the feature film. Time you could Gabriel mocked, you know, I love Gabriel. Maybe you like the suits, you know, watch the suits. Watch the suits. There's plenty of great stuff you can watch with Gabriel. Yeah. I don't know about that one though. All right. All right. Unless you have Ian pouring butter on his face next to you. It's very messy. Geeks gave us a subscribe share with your friends all that. We'll see you next Geekskaper, right? Maybe it's a conversation. Maybe it's another review. I don't know yet. I figured it out. It'll be in 2025. The future. Tum-tum-dum. Tum-tum-dum. Peace everybody. And it says, "Good show and your year, treatment." Things couldn't really. I'm going to end this episode as well. Peace everybody. Don't hate create. Bye. Bye. You're listening to the Geekskaper.com. Bye. [MUSIC PLAYING]
Marvel's animated series 'What If...?' was released on Disney+. And it's a shame, because the first two seasons are some of the best storytelling the MCU has to offer, with multi-versal interpretations of some of our favorite Marvel characters! And sometimes these animated alternates find their way to the wider MCU, like the fan favorite Captain Carter! Now that Season 3 has concluded, it's time to search through the multiverse and answer a bunch of questions! What new characters does Season 3 introduce? Do they have origins on the comic page? Will we see these characters again? Join me and Geekscape's own Watcher, Ian Kerner, as we ask... What If...?
