I'm going to let you do the honors, but I'm geek for this episode. Show me. We've been waiting for this episode, man. Come on, man. Decade plus professional, man. The best walk on ever to do an NCAA, man. We got a lot to talk about today, man. JL3. JL3 coach Luke pre-shaded slide on his big dog. Thank y'all for having me. Show me. We've been waiting for this episode, man, ever since the Minnesota stories came out. It's the highest request against, man. Listen, we got a lot to talk about, but first, I want to talk about how y'all first met, man. Let's go to y'all. We're just the first. Well, you know, I'm betting about bussings. You know, killing fools. I'm almost sipping crazy. I'm kidding, but I'm killing, uh, uh, when I was a rookie, the Hawks, we didn't have some relief. We had many camps. We had a mini camp and they had some veterans come. He was a veteran in the league. He was, you know, and he was trying to work his way on the team, what make the Hawks team a roster, whatever it was, was mini camp. And it was my rookie year. I never been in the NBA. Nothing. And me and him got in the battle. So we get the plan, me and him going back and forth. He giving me the blues. I'm doing my thing. At the end of the day, I end up getting the best of them a little bit, right? But in the middle of the game, this nigga started coaching me. This is what I do, he's going to be my guy and he's going to be a coach. I'm going to while I'm doing my thing, I'm calling pick a rose. He like, Hey, yeah, yeah, you're a fella. When you, when you go on that pick a road and you go on it, don't turn your head because I'm just going to blow it. I'm going to blow by you. Look at it. This nigga like, what? Like they were playing against each other and they got like, oh, this nigga talking to her. So I go to red off more. It's right. I'm like, who is this nigga? He was like, no, he can play. Man, it's nigga. Nah. He just kept talking to me. That's how we, I met this nigga. He was killing though. I ain't going to hit on. He was. I have about 50 though. Damn. That's fat. Okay. You know, you get drafted. You get taken every shot you want to take. That's a fat. You know what I mean? You get to take every shot you want to take. So I just like, I remember, because I was like, you know, we all had to pull up in the little van or the bus they pick as a hotel, you know, he'll work. It's like maybe, I think I'm like, well, maybe five, I'm going to do my six year. And he pull up and he got, he brought himself a brand new, uh, guys challenge him. He called it a dope boy car. Yeah. I said, man, look at this, I said, I, I used to always try to find something if I had to go against somebody like, if I didn't know him or something, I had to find something I didn't like about him. Okay. For me, they're like, just like what I don't like about him, which is going to make me like when we step on that corner, I'm going to turn up. So I just like off me, I was like, oh, his swag is like, like, he was too, like, I was just like, it's swag. Like he walking down, you know, he had little, little speakers in the trunk. I'm like, that's cute. You know, we've been doing that, you know what I'm saying? He, you know, he doing this and doing that. He walk out. He acting like he don't acknowledge like the old heads, you know, and we had, we had some hitters in there though, like the guys who like, like probably on the edge, like I was just like six years in, like I said, but we had guys that was at like 10, 12 years that still trying to fight, still could play, but everybody know when the lead, the older you get, the more you kind of get weeded out. So once I started seeing that, I just started playing the game. I was like, all right, cool. Like I know I probably ain't going to make the mind, you know, make the Atlanta Hawks team, you know, they drafted T, the court guards, they had Mike BB still, who else was on, he had nothing. Jamal. You know what I'm saying? So it's just like, okay, it's a mini-care. Let me just do what I got to do, whatever and get up out of here. So once I seen Woody, he was like, man, him take every kind of shot. I'm like, like, damn, like if he, like he wanted to like turn backwards from the three and throw it like this, it wasn't going to say nothing. I'm like, oh, they really going to try to build this team around this young, you know, young boys. All right, let me figure it out. And my dad always taught me change lives, you know, paying forward. And I was like, he's fast, stupid, that lady got a crazy right, I'm like crazy. Like he kept hitting me with this one simple move. I could never stop always bid on the crossover. And it was a step back, that was a jumper too, but his pick and roll game was trash. He didn't know the game. He didn't know the game, he was a one on one player. So in the pick and roll, I just started, we icing it. He turned in the ball. And I was like, yeah, I'm just going to start talking. Oh, it's always like, turn them up, turn them up because I was like, I'm, I'm basketball to me. He's 8% mental, too. It's a physical. I was trying to deal. But he ain't never been in those situations. I'm getting there. Well, yeah, we icing them. He ain't got it. Low man pull over. He turned, he turned it over left and right there. Damn. And so then I was like, I feel kind of bad because I'm getting frustrated. I mean, I have 50. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. You have 50 of like 25 free. They started talking to the text. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. You have 50 of like 25 free. They start talking to the text. Oh, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. You have 50 of like 25 free. They start talking to the text. Oh, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no. You have 50 of like 25 free. They start talking to the text. I was like, "Oh, they icing? I'm just gonna keep the ball in the middle of the floor." - Yeah. - Yeah. - It's nice to be here. - Can't I? Well, I know this was, I was like, for him to have, like, longevity. - Right. - And you could see it. You can see, like, my baby was on his way out. - Yeah. - A little bit older, you know what I'm saying? And I'm like, "It will be selfish of me." Not to, like, pay it forward. Help somebody else along the way. 'Cause that's what Nick Van Axle did for me. That's what Damon Stalemore did for me. That's what Bubba Chuck did for me. West Side Tennis Club Houston takes everybody to come to Houston to train in the summertime. - Oh, okay. - So as a high schooler, they was who I'm playing against. And they did the same thing to me. And I just was like, "I gotta pay it forward." So I did it with Ties Jones. I did it with T. I tried to do it with Chris Dunn, you know what I'm saying? So it's just like, for me, I was like, "I know I can go to bed at night and lay my head down on the pillow and be like, "Yo, was I better today? Did I get somebody else better as well?" - Nah, that's love. - And that was just, that was just my way of, like, 'cause I want no superstar on the league. - Yeah. - You know what I mean? But my whole thing was like, I wanted to play 10 years in. So I got to be that locker room guy. I got to be that guy that's always ready. So when the opportunity presented itself, I was ready. And that's, I took full advantage of it here playing for Chicago Bulls. Those two and a half years, I was, he was probably the best years I had in the game besides the Pistons. - Yeah. - The Pistons here, I came in. So, and I just stayed ready. - We got to talk about your NBA career man. Let's talk to the origins of it. You gave us an interesting tip before recording. You never play a U basketball. - Well, yeah. - You already played one tournament in AUL's, the eight, what was it? Out in Vegas or the Adidas. - Big time. - Big time. - And I didn't play. I played for this team called the Houston superstars. John Yuri, they had TJ Ford, Daniel Yoon. - TJ, you're in your way. - You're in the room. But I played tennis in the summer. So I was top 15 in the country in tennis. Every weekend, I was playing in the tennis tournament. Everybody else was playing basketball. But this year, I was just like, I told my dad, I was like, man, I want to play. - Yeah. - I do both. He didn't want me to quit tennis. My dad didn't really want me playing basketball. He didn't want me to play tennis. I was like, yo, you little motherfucker. You're only five. It's going to be so hard for you to make it. And I was just like, yeah, but that's why I love it. So I quit tennis one day. I don't like this one. - It's about how you would have been in tennis, though. I know you was nice. - I go back. I go, man, you know, it's crazy. - It ain't too many black dudes play tennis. - That's what, like I said, and that's who trained my pops. So my people don't realize my pops play professional tennis. - Yeah, and he won the NCAA tournament and the NCAA doubles and he won the singles. He's a national championship in tennis. And why he was at University of Maryland. - That's hard. - And a new one, Pete. So for me, my dad loves tennis. So when I picked up tennis, it was for, because I was living in Philadelphia at the time. I was a kid that never wanted to be in the house. Like if they was outside playing street hockey, I learned how to ride skates and play hockey, play lacrosse. I never wanted to be in the house. I just wanted to be active. So when my dad found out I was going to go out for the tennis team, bro, he turned into a monster. Like the way that kids trained now for basketball, we was like that for tennis. - Like Serena Daddy. - Worse. - Damn. - Like I know his pops. - Yeah, like I'm saying, like imagine playing tennis with a 40-pound weight vest on him. - Damn. - And he knew I love basketball. So when he was like, it all going transition. Like he knew, it's all going to make sense. Trust the process. That's all he used to say. So now lateral movement. Angles. All basketball is a geometry. - Yeah, right. - All that kind of redo is just geometry. Just angles on the glass. We doing that in tennis. - Damn. - Tops me in. Slice. Y'all hit. If I overhead and it goes to the right, just know the whole left hand side of the court going to be open. Now I got my back hand going cross-court. I got my forehand running around. - Nigga, we don't play tennis. - You know what I'm saying? But I played on a video game. I'm telling you. - But you know what I'm saying? - That's what we do. - Yeah. But it all translated over the basketball though. - That's right up. - It all translated over the basketball. So then the basketball game starts slowing down to me. And I was like, oh, you know what? If I'm having a bad match in tennis, now I got to tap into my psychic. I got to wheel my way into like whatever I got going on in tennis. I got to, 'cause I don't have four other players to depend on to give me out this home. But now in basketball, if I'm having a bad game, I can lean on somebody. So tennis helped me with my mental game too, where I can wheel my way to be like, let's check the boxes. Or I'm missing a couple shots. It's my elbow tucked in. I got a pancake goos neck. Like I just start checking the boxes and then I would correct whatever mistakes I'm making. - Now your mental is crazy. I'm going to say that. Because even when you help me my rookie year, but then when I see you throughout the league, then when I got with you in Minnesota, like, I know I'm skipping ahead. We want to talk about your journey. But when I got to Minnesota, you know, I was, I was turned. Like, and you like, let's get some extra shots. I'm like, nigga, no. No, I didn't cover her extra shots. I can't hear the pastor ball of Jimmy and wig and cat. But you talk like, come on, boy, you got to lock in on what we going to be good as if you do this. And then that first year I was doing that shit with you. And we had a good season. I mean, Jimmy got hurt, but we was having a successful season. And then you was like, you're a tool. You got to keep going. And like, you will push me. And then D. Ross and you doing it with D. Rose and like, yo mental, always just been different. I'm like, I'm going to show love to that. Because obviously, tennis helps you a lot. So maybe I should start putting some people in tennis on my team. - Nah, just for me, it's more like, for me, it's more like. - Shit, we need some built-up. - Nah, for me, I think I saw something in you that you didn't really see in yourself. I think you was already kind of planning your exit. - In Minnesota. - In Minnesota, I'm like, bro, you got about four, five years left in you. - And I would be like, nah. - I was like, don't let these people discourage you. - Right. - And have you been a role that ain't really you. Like, yeah, you got to play the game. But I said, yo, this ship don't move without you. You are starting PG, the point guard control everything. - That's a fuck. - And he, I'm like, yo, bro, you don't realize you can get another big deal. - Yeah. - I said-- - He used to say that he has to be like-- - I said, bro, you can sign another Eddie ball. And his goofy self used to be like, man, I'm cool. I got, I'm straight. And I'm like-- - Yup. - I'm like, what's wrong with you? - I don't know, bro. - I was like, they giving money out. - I didn't see it too-- - He got too comfortable. - Not too comfortable. - Too comfortable. - Too late. - But when I, when we started like, when it started happening and I started caring, like, we doing these workouts, I'm gonna come off the bench. You remember, I'm off the bench. I'm gonna get another bag, be the sixth man. I was hooping. Then I get hurt. I said, what the fuck? - Yeah. - And he was like, see, when you play with the game, the basketball guy. - Hey, I'm big on that. I'm big on that. - I'm listening. Say now, it's basketball guy. - I'm big on that. But I never disrespected the game. - Yeah. - And I was disrespected. And then when I tried to get serious and he like, yeah, we locked in. I get hurt. It's like, damn. - Well, we got back right. - Yeah, we got back right. - We got back right. But I was a, see, my pops raised me and my, my whole, me and my brother and my sister, they, he raised us on principle. - Yeah. - And he was like, you never want to disrespect the game, house. So like, when my teammates in high school, they all wonder where high socks, I never wore high socks before. I always wore like, you know, ankle socks, a little crew. So I was like, ah, I'm gonna wear high socks because for the whole team wearing it, I want to be a team player. Yeah. One thing, my momma, I'll pie. He crazy. - It's his pops. - Like, he crazy. Like, so we warming up. He said, I got high socks on. He walking in the middle of the court. I was like, what you doing? Go put your socks on. - Damn. - I'm a junior in high school. I'm like a junior senior in high school. - And when nobody gonna say shoot the pops, it's not a damn song. - Nobody say, and I was like, all right, babe, he was like, that's that. - Don't be no father. - Don't be no father. That's what I'm saying. That's not you. - Yeah. - So now mentally, you're not even ready to play because you so worried about how you look and making sure you fit in with everybody else that you ain't even ready to go seek and destroy. That was his whole thing. This whole thing was like, my friend, I think was, his thing was, protect my last name. Every game you used to tell me that. - Yeah. - Yeah. - That's a hell of a lineage though. - Every game you used to tell me that because I didn't play at you, like I said, so I'll go back. I only play basketball for four and a half months. - When did you get cold? - I always been cold. [laughter] - Let me tell you. Let me tell you. - Hey, no. - Let me tell you. - Okay. Talk to me now. - Sweet. - Hey, I'm telling you. - You was doing good. - No. I always been cold. - Listen, listen, listen, I understand that, bro. - Go ahead. - I'm just saying, when did you be like, damn, I can do this. You feel me? You was authorized. - The day I came out my mom. - Yeah. - The day I came out with my clothes, cold. I came out like this. That's my daddy. I came out with my hand form like this. They got pictures. - Hey, what you call that? Were you here to jump from me? - Make that dog sneeze. [laughter] - From my neighborhood, you say make that dog sneeze and step up. [laughter] - Oh, really? - You know what that made that you ever heard of dog sneeze before? - No. - It go up. - Yeah. - So every time I shoot, that's the next. - I'm a country boy. - I understand. - Make that dog sneeze. - I was just saying, when did you have to feel like, damn, I can do this. I can do this for real. Like, at our whole life. - My whole life? I'm telling you. - What you got to tell me? - What you got to tell me? - You got to tell me. - You got to tell me. - You got to tell me. - You got to tell me. - You got to tell me. - You got to tell me. - You got to tell me how you grew up. 'Cause he grew up differently than us. - No, give up, give up. - Well, if you don't really, I let the whole state in scoring. - Mm. - Well, you. - I got a, what year? Every year. I played. - He went to the Bel Air, like real life. - He was one of them bullshit schools. - No, he's a public school. - People always thought I grew up in a private school. My pops went for it. - Okay. - We published, I'm a public school. - Tell me, Bel Air. Will Smith was trans. - Oh, no, no. - So, Will Smith was trans. - So, Bel Air is like... - It was the same, though. - Yeah, the Bel Air is like how the Bel Air you were thinking of. I grew up next to the Enron people. - Okay. - I grew next to the Chevron people. - Yeah. - We went all through high school. We graduated all one together. - Okay. - He zoned to my school. I had Lawrence Roberts. I don't know if you remember Lawrence Roberts. We end up going to Bel again. We all was zoned to the same school. My school, my school was a public school, but like Bel Air, people think I'm from the suburbs. I'm from the center of the city, but we are on city inside of Houston. - Yeah. - But when you go over here, every school we play was in the hood. Madison, where Vince Young went, that's Herm Clark. We had Sterling word and little Flip went to word, and that's Sunday, so all of our schools was in our district. It was all hood schools. We only had one other school that's kind of like us. That was Le Mans High School. - Who went there? - Le Mans Roberts ends up transferring our freshman year, and he went to high rival school. - Okay. - But they had a guy out of the name Corey Smith, who ended up playing at Vanderbilt in the SEC. He was nice, too. So we had a lot of Hoopers. - How was that playing with them like at all? Like, was he always good? - No, he was trash. - No, he was trash. - No, he was trash. - He was trash? - He was trash. - And that's like the greatest big ever for us in college. - He was trash. I'm fresh. He won't trash, but he couldn't. He was uncoordinated. - Okay. - But he wanted to be a doctor. - He's smart as fuck. - He's smart. He graduated our junior year in high school. He already graduated. So I seen you here. He was taking courses for college already. - Okay. - So Mecha was smart. He didn't think about even playing in the NBA. He didn't think that. He was on. He was just going to use basketball and get into medical school, like get into. - Oh, that's crazy. - That's so my dad one day, because I always did player development. My dad trained me my whole life. He was in my life. You know, it don't matter if he had a job in Denver. I used to, we would fly for the weekends to Denver and I'm practicing with the team. I'm practicing with Nivet, like I'm working out. So Mecha ended up going from being like six, four in freshman year to six, seven, our sophomore year. Then he kept going, my dad, when they come home, he was like, "Mecha, you a pro." He was like, "You got a chance to make 80 million." - That's how his dad talked about it. - He's like, "You got a chance to make 80 million." - Yeah. - And I'm like, "Oh." And then even a mecca dad didn't see, he was like, "No, he need to focus on his books. He going to be an engineer or a doctor," you know, he's like, you know, so that's what they think. - Okay. - Man, we get to our junior year. He started playing with the Houston hoops, having success, summertime. Every day we in the gym, six a.m., I used to go pick him up from his place. Pops had us, the workouts were crazy because it would be me, Mecha, Lawrence, Daniel Ewing, TJ Ford, Carlos Hurt, Phil Williams, guys, you don't know of like that in Houston. And it was like, my papa was like, "Yeah, they better than you." And I used to be like, "Man, they ain't better than you." Y'all, they were cold, but at that time, my mental game was like, "I'm the best team on the court." But I didn't realize what my pops are doing, I aren't shoppers, I aren't. So we was all getting each other better, but at the same time, we was all kind of dissecting each and each one of our games. So we was going to all plug into that one point. - Yeah. - That's an interesting point. You talk about both of y'all, obviously, are coaching, you see it now, like a lot of kids now duck that competition back then, y'all had to embrace it. How do you kind of translate that now for kids is just like, at some point, you have to show up and play against the top. - Man, you know what, kids get a competition now. Kids are so worried about if they're going to get posted on social media. Kids are scared of being embarrassed. I grew up to where, if you ain't been dunked on, crossed over. Or embarrassed, you ain't playing at a high level. - That's real. - So all my best friends aren't from the neighborhood I'm from. All my best friends are from the other side of the tracks. - Yeah. - That's what the best ball is in. So when I used to leave high school, I'm in sunny side, I'm in third ward, I'm in fifth ward, that's what the ball is. It didn't matter. I wasn't worried about going over there, I wasn't worried about it. It's like, it's basketball, it's a universal language. Now, I knew how to conduct myself when I was over there, so where I can come back, get back to the crib, but at the end of the day, I wasn't going to get better playing against my neighbors or staying in my neighborhood when I'm playing against Billie and Tommy and John. I had to go play against against Tyreek, Ray Carrouff, or somebody like that at the... - I'm just using like... - A hell of a one-on-one game, boy. - But I'm just saying... - Wait, wait, wait, wait. You play against me? - No, no. I'm just using that name as a example. I'm saying I had to go play against like a Kareem or somebody like that because... - That's right. - No, no. That Ray Carrouff, like that, but I'm just saying I had to go, I had to go with the kids called Trinchers now, I had to go get that so I can get better at basketball. - That's right. - I don't know. - I'm just saying. I don't know. - Hey, Jeff, you know me. I'm just going to say whatever comes up to the bottom. - You know me, Jeff. I'm going to speak. That's the name that popped up in my head. I just said. But that's why I got better at that. - See how you're doing? - I don't know. That's like... I'm not even thinking about the football player, what I'm saying, I was just saying the name. - That's the perfect part, boy. - I was just saying the name, but that's why I got better at it. - You and Daniel, the same class, though? - We all. - We all won. - We probably had the best class coming out of the United States, are you? - Daniel, you and his one. - All won. - It's not better now, what's the name? - Oh, I was just saying that year, Texas as a state. - Oh, you're saying Texas, guys? - No, all seven had the coldest class. My little... Oh, yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Sorry. - Yeah. - We can talk it. - You know what I'm saying? - Listen. - That's the first thing. That's the first thing you go. He make Don's. I say how, bro. Look what he was doing. - Yeah, and they got to play. - Look what he was doing. - But he had a, like, you know, pause coming out party. So, I mean, that's what it's all good. - That's what it's all good. - It did. - That's it, Jay. He doing great things that do it. - He doing, you know what? - Kentucky. - He doing early Lucas that can brag about being a McDonald's American. - Yeah. - That's it. - That's it. - I possibly was a McDonald's American, I wasn't. He the only one. - Nah, that's it. - And he doing his thing. I'm proud of him. He's doing his thing. You know what I'm saying? You the best walk on ever. Let's walk through the opposite. I said, but I don't want to sign early because I want to make sure my guys that I came in as a freshman, they all get scholarships as well with me and a mecca ochre for sign early and no more schools are going to come to our game. So my pop set is down, so we talk a mecca, because he was supposed to go to Georgia Tech. - Oh, okay. - Originally. - I can see that though. - So he was supposed to go to Georgia Tech originally, so every time I see Coach here out in LA, because he's part of the Ontario Clippers, he get mad at me because I had a mecca ochre for it to you and your daddy taught him that to sign early. So that's when Yukon came in, but my dad was like, "Bro, y'all came in?" Like everybody got to eat, everybody needs to. So he was like, "If y'all don't sign early, y'all going to have all the colleges still come in." And after that, I took a visit to famU, because if I were to want to famU, if I took a visit famU, they was going to get one of my teammates in college here, just for me coming on campus. And by far, that was the best visit I ever took in my life. - I almost did. Shout to famU, beautiful. - Right. - I've been using something else. - Right. - I'm going across the street, but my pops is all about, you bring somebody along with you, you never. And that's just how we grew up as a family. So we taught the mecca, so I really want to go to A&M because I wanted to play for a black coach, and I gave him my word, and he was like, "Okay, we got you. We're going to wait on you." Seven days later, they signed a point guard at the JuCup. - Yeah, it's over with you. - So then-- - You're not going to Texas A&M? - Yeah, I'm back at square one, so I had Baylor, I had Rutgers. I had, everybody really recruited me for basketball, but I had more offers than tennis. - Oh, okay. - So, and everybody who was recruiting me wanted to risk, because I didn't lift weights. I was only 140 pounds my senior year. - Damn. - Right? But I was just like, all we did was push up dips and pull ups. We didn't touch the weights, because my dad was like, "You touch the weights, it's going to mess with your shot." - Yeah. - Yeah. - I'd argue it was-- - 40. 18 is crazy. - Yeah. - Yeah. - I was 155. - A D1 athlete, but you came back, they put you on that shot. - Yeah, when I went to college, I was like 150, and then they made me like, "You gotta eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every four hours." And I would gain like three pounds, and then-- - You would run it off. - I'd run it off, and I'm right back. And I just was like, and I had to run anyway, because they tried to make me lift weights and cause, and I was fighting against not lifting weights in college. So the knockoff was, "Well, you're going to have to run for punishment, because you don't want to lift weights." I said, "Me, I'm just--" I'm mental, and I'm like, "All right, I'm just going to be--" - I can outrun everybody. - I did. - Yeah. - And I still got my burner. - Yeah. - Because I used to, if I lift weights, and I miss my first three shots, I will always blame the weights. - Yeah. - Because I'm still, if I'm sore, now I'm shooting like a running back in the football place. - Yeah. - And see the football players play the wrecks in it. - In the real game. - Yeah. - Yeah. - You know what I mean? But for me, I had to be-- - No, I was nothing. I was 150. I came back one, 85, 190. - See, yeah. - That's crazy. - That could've been-- - No, it was in three months. - It was in three months. - Yeah. - Flex. - I came 30-some pounds. - He was like, "Oh, wrong man, coming back to the city." - Nah. Man, Baylor was, like I said, the worst because it was too close to home. - Mm. - And I had-- - You went back home a lot? - Every day. - Damn. - I used to take that two-hour drive. It was like 45 minutes away. - Damn. - Yeah. - You had a lady or something? - Nah, I just-- - We just home. - I was home. I had the whole house of myself, and my pops took the coaching job in Cleveland. - Yeah. - Yeah. - I was like-- - It was up. It was up. - It was up. - It was up. It was up. - It was up. - It was up. - Well, that's like a school move where he does it. - But you're not having fun somewhere. - I'm asleep. - Well, you're not having fun somewhere? - Yeah. - And me and the coach started end up having problems and issues. Trying to find comfort, trying to be around love, really, and all my boys back home, cousins, best friends that I grew up with, was all back in Houston, and I would rather be there than that Baylor, like, miserable-- I mean, Waco, Texas, nothing to do there for us. - Right, yeah. - And-- - Sorry. - I watch a show based out of Waco, Texas. Maybe sell my homes and rebuild. - Oh, the white-- why do they just water it? - Yeah. - Yeah. - I actually think they Baylor alums. - Oh, yeah. - I think they Baylor alums. - Oh, well, he said they split 'em. Come back together. I don't know why he knows that. - But yeah. - 'Cause I really chapped in. - Yeah. - No, they do some good work, but-- - No, I just-- - I just hated-- I just hated-- like, my first year was cool. I let my team is going, and this is-- - That's a freshman. - As a freshman. - Bam, that's correct. - Big 12. You know, TJ, obviously, did his thing. - For sure. - Yeah. - So it was just like-- and then my sophomore year, it just got tricky. It got weird. All it started just-- it's like everything's shift. It's like I come back as a starter, still leading the team, it's going, it's sis. We playing it. I think we got like, 10 games left for the season. All of a sudden, coaches just own me all day and practice, own me all day and practice. And we had a point guard, Rebecca, his name was Matt Sainte. And I'd like, in practice, if it was born to me, like I told Jeff, I had to find something bad about something. So I just started talking trash the whole practice. But you can't hold me, like hold that. Like, that's when Gene came out. So every time I shot, he was like, "Gee, jee, jee, jee, jee, jee." Like, I used to do like that. And so coach pulled me, coach was like cursing me out. And he was telling me, "You think you so-and-so wootie-woo?" He was like, "You grew up with a silver spoon in your mouth." I was like, "Wait, what?" "Sill and spoon." I said, "Man, that my spoon was plaid." [LAUGHTER] First turn. Keep me out of practice. Like, keep me out of practice. He'd come in the locker room. We get into this full, blown argument. And I don't play for the next eight games. Damn. I went from starting, not playing. They playing. I walk on. They playing. Everybody hit it. People are like, asking questions, like, "Why this? Why that?" And nobody could get the answer. Damn. So then, now I'm like, "Damn, what'd I do?" You know what I mean? I said, "It can't be that bad for me, just, you know, you trying to be this to me." I'm like, "Yeah, it's not silver, it's platinum because platinum is the best." Yeah, it was popping in, yeah, it was popping too. Yeah, it was popping in, yeah, it was popping in, yeah, it was popping in. Yeah, it was popping in, yeah, it was popping in. Yeah, it was popping in, yeah, it was popping in. Nah, I was like, "Nah, it was better than what you think." Right. It was like, 'cause I just felt like you could talk to me another way if you're trying to just say, "No, instead of trying to put me down in front of everybody, 'cause of my background where I come from." Yeah, yeah. I was like, "Okay, me being who I am, I could be asshole a little bit." Yeah. I was just like, "Nah, it's platinum." And I was ready to hoop again, but he just took you to a whole other leg, kicked me out of practice, so he just went downhill from there. And I just was like calling back home 'cause my pops was living in Cleveland, they was in Cleveland coaching at the time. And I was telling him how I was being treated, and this, and he was like, "Be professional." My dad was all about, "Don't disrespect the game, keep coming to practice," stuff like that. I did, and one day I had a next-tell phone, 'cause I had two phones in college, so I had a next-tell to church, and you could record. And I was like, "Yo, dad, I'm telling you, he be talking crazy to me, I'm gonna snap on him one day like he's just talking crazy." And I just recorded, and I let my dad hear it. My dad still, and then my dad eventually got fired from Cleveland, so he started coming to the games, being around me, making sure my mental, making sure everything was straight. And when he first got there, he sat behind the bench, and we was doing so bad that the Waco newspaper, people don't know this, break with new people, like, "Yo, when did it be a trip if Coach Lucas ends up becoming the head coach of the Bay Area?" Bears. Yeah. 'Cause he's already training all of us in the summertime, and he's... Yeah, he's already locked in. Man, in the next-game, next-home game we had, they had my mom and pops in the know- Damn. They had my mom and pops in the know- Damn. My dad be who he is. My mom was like, "Man, come on, we're going to break right down." He sat there down. He had a birthday to his normal seat, but I ticketed my ticket was all the way in the nosebleed. That's crazy. That's crazy. No, but I didn't do it. Yeah. And then all of a sudden, you know, unfortunately, what happened, what happened, you know, R.P. to my teammate Pat Denny, all that stuff started happening in the summer, and obviously, you know, we went through, you know, what we went through. Right, right, right, right. You know, it's... That was a crazy time. Yeah. That was a real dark time. Yeah. But I can ask the question, like, when that time happened, like, to go through that or whatever, with your teammate, it's a tough... I can't even imagine what that feels like to even go through that. Like, what would you think? What are you thinking? Like, yo, I'm getting out of Baylor. Like, I got to leave this place. Like, it ain't for me. Or would you, like, damn, let's... Well, before all that happened, I was already checked out. Okay. Yeah. And I was like, man, I'm transferring. He was like, "You ain't transferred. I'm holding your paper. I'm stuck here for two years." Yeah. That type of vibe. Okay. So I was like, "I'm like, I'm transferring. I don't know what's going to happen." You know what I'm saying? Like, but I know I ain't playing here no more. Yeah, yeah. And in that situation happened, and it was crazy because, like, everybody was in Houston training with us that day, and then we get the phone call asking if we've seen Pat. Yeah. And I was like, "No, he not down here." Left it like that. And then we didn't think nothing of it. We just thought, "Okay." So we still going in. Now we go by now. All of a sudden, you see you on CNN, you see the FBI involved. You see all that's going on, and my teammate, RT Gwen, started recording all the conversations. And one of the conversations popped up, "I never forget this when my name got cleared from everything from, like, you know, if I accepted any money or anything like that." As they got on tape, said, "Well, we can't go to Lucas because he ain't gonna lie for us." Damn. Wow. Like, that was a bet. Like, seeing my dad chest poked out, because of all the teaching and the principles and stuff. He taught me and my brother and sister. And you ain't fucked with him at this point either. So I was like, "Yeah." And I ain't talking. I'm just this. I'm like, I just wanted a hoop, right? Yeah. And it was like, when that came out, I remember getting that phone call saying, "You clear? Like, you enjoy the rest of your college career, you don't have to worry," because they started like, "How did he get his car?" Like, I had my car myself when you're in high school. How did he get his rims? Steve Francis brought my rims. How did you get to your life? How did you get your sister in your car? Because he ain't no mom. You know what I'm saying? Like, those are my big brothers, so they saw me doing good, and they like, "I'm training every day with him. I'm in it." So they like, "Man, like..." That's different. You know what I mean? It's not a regular nigga, bro. Yeah, it's different. And it was just like, "I grew up different." And it's like, it's normal. We gotta get back to that, 'cause we ain't even getting to the good shit, bro. Yeah. We grew up in Philly. Let's talk about it. We hear that. Let's see it. I grew up in Philly. How old were you when you moved to Philly? See, he's great. Middle school. I went to Balakinwood Middle School. There was only two NBA players that ever come out of Balakinwood Middle School. Who was that? Yeah. Who was that? Yeah. Go. First of all... So, Jordan, what... Nah, Kobe Dean. Oh, okay. Oh, look at that. What the fuck you looking at me? Look, and now I'm just... Yeah, it's only two that came out of Balakinwood Middle School. Kobe Bryant, John Luke. It's the third. Oh, J-3, 'cause it's the wound. Yeah. Yeah. I'm telling you, it's crazy, 'cause we just literally moved to Philadelphia. My dad was the president and the general manager, president, and head coach of the 76ers when he was there. What... Hold on. This is just me. Like, what is that like? I grew up... My mom and dad were down in the street and shit. You know what I mean? That's real. No, yeah. I get you. You know, you my man. Yeah, I get you. You my nigga, but like, what is that like to know like, your dad is like an NBA coach. Your dad played in the league, but like, he the guy. What's that like? I don't know. I ain't think that was just normal day every day to me. That shit was... I mean, bro, when I was like five years old, I'm ever going to the barbershop with Michael Jordan and my dad. Michael Jordan picked us up in the Corvette, and I'm sitting my dad's lap. We driving on the South Side of Chicago, why they go get haircuts during the Eastern Conference playoffs, and my pops are playing in Milwaukee. That's fine. Like, I got every Michael Jordan shoe he ever played in signed. I know. I listen, I know. Like, no, I'm talking about the shoes he played in signed, like the shoes he got crossed up in against Atlanta. I got it in my garage signed. I know. I was a ball boy. I know. I'm just speaking for the people who know. Yeah. So like, I know. I know your lineage. I know. Yeah, I know. I'm just saying, I put a... Yeah, the culture. Yeah. I've been a ball boy my whole life. That's it. It's crazy. So I've been around. I've been around. Like, my dad, I was like, you know, every like kid who just want to be around. So when my dad went to the gym and met her, I was a ball boy. I used to mop the floor, like free throws. I was that kid mopping the floor. I was that kid, you know, doing everything. I learned how to talk to girls by going into the stands, get numbers, and I used to... I used to... Give me like $50, go get a number, and then you give me a $100, go get a hot dog, and press those and be like, "I'll be like, here, you're a change, but no, I'll lose you. You got it? Keep the change." I'll change $85. That's all right. I'm walking home with three, four hundred, like six years old, seven years old as a ball boy. Yeah. And getting paid on top of that as a ball boy. That was all right. What was it like first seeing Kobe who doh, when was your first glance at Kobe Bryant? Amazing. He's the biggest Kobe fan of the world, he can't say nothing like I love Kobe too. Not as much as I love Jordan, but you have to let him go, you got to know what you can't say. Let me get this shit up. Amazing, bro. Give me that time. We want another time. Storytime with J3. All right. My mom is the one who discovered Kobe, not like overall, but she the one who is newspapers and everything. So I can give you all all this, all facts. I never lie. It's all facts. Okay. One day, I just got back from tennis practice with my dad. She come home one day and tell my pops. I think I've seen a better high school player than you and my dad like, what? You got to know that dad. So this is funny. Like he low-key about to bring a drug test out to test my mom and make sure she's straight. So my dad was like, all right. Next time they play, we going to the game. My mom come here as a kid named Kobe, it's a kid named Kobe. Go lower me high, go to my sister, come on such a grad school, lower, lower marrying. And so my dad, I never gave him some Friday. So we go lower me high school. They got a home game. So my dad pegged me and my little brother in the car. We just got done working out. So we go all the way to the game and he see jelly, you know, jelly in there as pops. And my dad was like, "Jelly, what you doing?" And I'm like, oh, he was like, oh, man, I'm here to see my son play. He's like, yeah, man. My wife come home, tell me it's a kid up here named Kobe that's probably better than me in high school. He the next best great thing ever to play the game. And he was like, oh, man, that's my son, right? So he was like, for real, like, you know, my dad. So we sitting there watching and then the game start, Kobe starts off at the five. He went to jump ball till they throw the ball, and he outrun first play the game, he win them. Damn. And that day I was locked in because I never, you know, you don't see it. Yeah. So he was like 11. Not 12. 12. That's right. I think like 11, 12 by the turn, I got late birthday, so I probably wasn't that about the turn. Okay. But yeah. And then we start, then we start going to every high school in my dad and then, then my dad started having him come practice with the Sixers because we, they didn't have a practice. So they at the time they used to St. Joseph University was a practice. Got you. That's why I say basketball is a full circle for me. Yeah. Right. So I live right down, she's in St. Joe's. You used to go hoop every day. We don't get serious. We don't get serious. We don't get serious. Yeah. So now we, you know, my dad got him practicing and what my dad used to do is he big on competition. So he used to match Kobe up against all of the draft workouts. So Jerry Stackhouse, all those guys who got drafted, right? Kobe beat them all one on one. Damn. And they was like, man, what school he went to, like, what cause he, my dad, but I mean, he a junior in high school. This is junior year. Damn. And Jerry Stackhouse, if y'all, it was phenomenal, amazing. So like, like, y'all have, y'all have, y'all have my OG on here, Vernon Maxwell. Yeah. I got stories about him for days, but I mean, we ain't gonna get in the hole. But Vern, when he said about Cole, ready to fight, he was ready to fight, coped in back down from there. I was there. I was at that part. Cole was ready to get his, like, Vernon crazy. Oh, we know. Like, you got the record for it. My fuckers on here. Yeah. He said the first five minutes. He said 37 motherfuckers in the first. Yeah. Vernon crazy. 47 motherfuckers. So Vernon was ready to fight Cole. He like, Kobe was really going at him. And he was what 17, 17, he ain't back now. And I was just like, oh, and then I started, like, then I started, he started picking me up from school. He was picking me up from my house. Your life different. I remember, I never get when he got his car. He got a forest green Toyota Land Cruise. It's a nigga life different. I remember he picked me up because we was going to work out of the city. I was like, oh, this cold in here, like, two trash bags in the trunk of his car. And I was like, man, what you got in a trash bag? He was like, young bull, you know, in Philly. They said young bull is like young bull is a game everyone in Philly. I ain't got time to go back home and get my gear and then come back and the game might be over. I got to be ready right now. Yeah. Boy, when I got my Dodge Durango, my sophomore year, I ain't putting no trash bags in my bag and like 90 don't you know what I'm saying? Yeah. Cause shit playing. Hey, that's the first thing I did in the trunk of my car, I put four pair of hooping shoes and a bag of just hoop gear. But this effect, because when I went to Minnesota, this nigga was retired from the leagues and they can still have a bag of shoes in his back of his car. Did you wear your hoop shorts on your under your pants? Yeah. Yeah. When you get busy at lunchtime, like you have time like you had your shorts on and I was living in Philly at the time. So we always wore Tim. So you'd be hooping in Tim's but you know, it was just different. But yeah, you had shorts on underneath. That was normal. That's just kids. I just like bring it up for the nostalgia show, but like kids, our kids don't understand that shit, bro. Yeah. We always were short. I went to parties with the my shorts. Like, I'm not about to go hoop. I'm really about trying to go get some, but like my hoop shorts, real long shorts, definitely 100 my jeans. Yeah. Yeah. You supposed to pull your pants down a little bit at the, at the, at the, at the parties, man. You know what I'm saying? I couldn't, I couldn't say. The guy chose to hoop shorts. Come on. It's crazy. I couldn't, I couldn't say. That's a riches. Right. Yeah. I couldn't, I couldn't say cops won't play in that. Yeah. Pops won't play. You know what I'm saying? We'll be second to that party though. Yeah. I used to be scared. My pops would come in the part wherever I was. I used to be scared. I get caught and so I was always like on alert, so he'd be like, ah, no second. I bought you some, you know, the little, um, belt it is like one side fit all the little week. Come into my fucking corgos. Yeah. All that. Hey, you know what I love though? You know what I love though? You know what I love though? You know what I love though? You know what I love though? You want, you want to think about it, right? We, off our clothes, came from Gap or Target. We didn't wear like how, like how now NBA kids were like the Gucci and all like, look, take that bill out of them pants. We, ah, we, like that, we used to go shopping wiener's, we used to go shopping and all these different, like my mom would be like, yo, we going shopping, you go for it? I don't know what you're going to say, that bill out of the pants. No, I mean, it works. I need to sell all my pants up. So it works. It's all got to get. It's all got to get. It's all got to get. You got to go back to the shoesture. I got to go back to the shoesture. I got to go back to the shoesture. So I mean, that don't never, so when we used to get hoop, I didn't have to worry about living my pants up and go by the way, they want to move it. They want to move it. They want to move it. They want to move it. That's great. That's great. Yeah. So it was just like, for me, I just, I just was like a sponge soaking up all the game. Is that the best high school basketball player you ever said? Yes. You saw LeBron too. Yeah. You saw him do. Can you speak on that? We've seen LeBron in high school with his workouts with the pros. That was a better showing. Kobe's showing with the suit. Well, you guys think like Kobe had an impact on me as an individual? Yeah. So I saw a different work ethic. I saw what it took to be a pro. Yeah. So the impact was a little bit different than what, like, now that could be my little brother's story about LeBron. Okay. You know what I'm saying? I was in college when I first saw LeBron. I understand. And my positive coach in Cleveland and I never, I remember coming on. I just got done with my like second year when I was going through everything. And my positive still in Cleveland. So I used to fly back on like holidays or the summers and we was in Cleveland. You know, I trained with the guys and something like that. And my dad was like, man, it's a kid up here. Better than Kobe. And I was like, man. Whatever. Like that. He was like, real, take your little brother. So my little brother's playing on LeBron's high school coach, Juice Jordan. Yes, sir. He had an AU team called Akron Superstars. My little brother played on that team. Okay. And they practiced at the University of Akron. So I took my little brother to a practice one day and they were hooping in the back gym. Come and find out a lot of the guys and local acting was hooping in the back gym. Well, my brother was practicing. I was also hooping too. Yeah. So that's when I first saw LeBron. And when I first saw him, it was just him, you know, it was some milestones. No, that's just my opinion wasn't like, but then my dad started inviting him like he did with Kobe because he was like, man, you know, I'm just going to get in the game and let him just come work out. I don't think I ain't trying to. I don't want nothing from this kid just, you know, there's some good, some good bumping. So we had a little mini camp and my dad used to fly in guys from Ohio State. You know, guys, and we have a mini camp and we'll play against the rookies who was already there, getting ready for some believe a little scrimmage, little mini camp and Bron came and like nobody was passing Bron the ball because everybody knew he was in high school. And we was all like, not passing the ball. My dad like stopped practice. Like, Hey, hey, hey, y'all a little motherfucks back. Get him the ball. He the best one on the court. Like that time on his players, but he was just talking about guys on our team. Yeah. And we like, man, whatever. I had the ball. I'm a point guard. So I can control everything. So I was just like, discuss. I was like, man, here, like through the ball to him, like, like he ain't going to do that. So we're getting right back. Hey, bro. We, he on the right side, right hand side of the court, he's being guarded by Ricky Davis. He make a move, just do something. Go baseline. So now you got Chris. I don't know. So they all come up. He jumps. Mouse out of the paint. Like jumps. Like, in like, Sagana. They go. And this man go underneath the rim, reversing. What was it? He was looking at the rim. He was a ball. He ran on his feet. He was like this. And just keep going. Yeah. He got the ball every possession out of that, because it was unbelievable. He was like, what else can he not, what else can you do? He unbelievable. He's not. I got the coaching. I know. Like, you know what I'm saying? So I'm seeing that. And I'm like, yo, he like, and then all of a sudden you get to see and then then I'm around Maverick. I'm around Rich. Like, before Rich became clutch, Rich sold everybody the throwback jerseys out the trunk. Every throwback I got, I brought from Rich. That's great. Like, every throwback Mitchell and then I brought from Rich in Cleveland. He had a van. He used to sell out the van. That's why I got my jersey. He's wrong. He overcharged me too. But, you know, we had to get him real stock eggs, real stock eggs. But yeah, so Martin then obviously, you know, my pops get fined 200,000 because all the other teams start complaining saying he had, you know, because he was going to be in no one pick. And then, you know, he got fired, you know, and then, you know, Brian ended up getting drafted by Cleveland. Well, what do mamas do for you? Because I know you lead Baylor and you go to okay, stay and this one we, I feel like I like fell in love with your game and found out who you was because I'm okay. Stay. You had a squad. I was hoping you was killing, but I love St. Joe's and we don't get to that game. Jamere Nelson, Delaunce was, I wore t-shirts under my jersey because he's like, I hooked in Barkley's bronze and all that shit because of Jamere Nelson and go ahead because you you fucked up my, you fucked up my momentum because I'm niggas was called and they was undefeated. They were, they was doing a thing. They were called. They like my gene. So when I, man, it was a black, like God have my bag, bro. That's all I can say. Because I live. Whatever you are. I was literally going to Memphis. Well, you got to talk about your, are you? Yeah, like I had Memphis Ruckers in Georgia and I was already like, I'm going to Memphis co-calipari. I had been out there summer times, you know, like now that I coach, you know, you do go to different places and pick each other's brains. So my pops is doing that like in between like jobs, he'd be like, I got to go to Memphis and we'll go to Memphis. He in there talking to coach Calipari, they talk to X's and O's and now I'm practicing with the team, shooting, getting my workout. Everywhere we went, I've always worked out, you know what I'm saying? So I was like, man, Memphis, you know, that'd be a great look coach, Cal. It was going to be a dearest Washington was coming in. He'll be coming in my senior year. But then, Victor Williams was, he went to Oklahoma State Point Guard. He was, he was the man at Oklahoma State too. Victor Williams was a point guard and he did his draft workout with my pops. And he kept telling like, yo, you should go to old stage, you should go to old stage. By the time, like, I was wild and I had braids, I used to wear a grill. I remember them braids. I remember them braids. I was using. So Paul Wall, one of my, one of my really good friends, so when that song, let me see your grills came out, he made me six at the bottom, all diamond out. So, so and, and I was in a rap song, see people don't even realize Paul Wall, and Chameleon, they had this group called Color Changing Clips. My mom, bro, still in love with my money. And Paul Wall said, he said, I swerved down the bell to watch John Lucas score and joined and came back to the game because the game was bored, it was on the mixtape. Respect. So, that was like my man, right? Don't forget the boys. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. You don't forget stuff like that, right? You don't forget stuff like that, right? You don't forget it because at the end I wasn't even expecting it because the mixtaches come out every Friday. So, I'm up here driving back to bail, and I just brought the mixtape, that Color Changing Clips. And I hear it. I said, hold on. What do you say? I rewind it. So, I walked on campus now, everybody got a mixtape, everybody like, oh shit, like Paul Wall shot at you. I'm like, yeah, no, I'm playing it cool when I'm low-key height because he don't put me on like, no, I'm at Baylor. We trash. Yeah. We like maybe 10th and 12th, but we had a great squad. We just was running flex. So we had horses. We should have been running. But, you know, that's here and there. So, the wheels like, man, you should take a visit to Oakland, we'll say it'd be a perfect fit for you. And we got a point guard, boom, boom, but at the time, the NCAA said we couldn't transfer. When they said all this, we couldn't transfer in the conference, so I could go anywhere and not sit out. But if I went, like, two weeks later, they said, y'all can transfer in the conference and you won't be penalized. Okay. So, originally... Before the transfer. So, originally, I wanted to go to Texas. No, TJ left, he's just got drafted. TJ... Who's in there with the... Booby was on their way in there. Booby came... Booby in my senior year. Oh, fuck. Yeah. So, Rick Barnes kept it a buck with me. I'm like trying to... Like, yo, Rick Barnes, like, I'm gonna come to Texas, you already know what I can do. Well, my other teammate, Kenny Taylor, who was a shooter, he ended up going to Texas. And Rick Barnes kept it a buck who was like, yo, we committed to Daniel Gibson. And we don't want to bring you in because we might be committed, right? Yeah. But he wouldn't come in until my senior year. Yeah. Yeah. So, then I had to respect it. So, then I was like, cool. So, then the legendary Eddie Sutton called me one day because of Victor Williams. And I go up there. I had a... I never forget. I went up there. I had my braids. Just my mom used to break my hair. So, I had fresh braids. I had an ice man, San Antonio, throwback jersey, y'all. Hey, fresh. You know what I'm saying? And I go visit the campus, right? I'm like, man, it's in the middle of nowhere, but I'm a city boy. Like, now I'm eight hours away from using that. I'm not going to go on a highway driving eight hours. You know what I'm saying? And then the next best city is Oklahoma City. Come on now. That was before Katie didn't pull it up. Exactly. They didn't even have a team out there then. So, I went out there and they didn't tell me I had to cut my hair. Damn. Like, my dad been wanting me to come out here because that's when the big, like, the NBA was changing over to like appearances and, you know, it's a business and stuff. But I was fighting. I was fighting. I was like, I ain't cutting my hair. I'm wearing my braids. A.I. was like, I'm watching, you know what I'm saying? And then TJ cut his hair, like right before the draft. And then TJ, my dad had TJ call me. They like kind of taught me and come out and come out and come out, y'all go on. So I went to Oklahoma State. Fresh braids and everything. I'm like, man, all right. You know, I'm looking at the team. I don't know who Tony Allen, I mean, I know playing against him. I ain't know the grams, because they was coming off a red shirt here, because they transferred. I didn't know who Daniel Bobby was. I didn't know who a couple. But something in my spirit was like, this is where you need to be. Okay. So when I was like commit, they never said nothing about cutting my hair. So now I was like, man, you know what, coach, I want to come here. So he was like, oh, you know, I got a couple of rules. I'm like, okay, I'm thinking like, you know, he was like, one rule, you can't have braids. You can't have facial hair. Then you go back and look at our team number, I think with the drum line, I'm fucking major pun. And my dad was like awful. Yeah. He's fine. So I went back on. I was like, well, let me think about that. So I flew back to Houston and I never, my barber, my kid, I walked in there and just freshly picked it up. And you know, you had braids for a long time. You still got the lines. Yeah. I had the phrase. I was like, like, chop it off. What? My mama was mad because she was like, that's somebody. That's another man trying to control you. Like, she barely met, she buried me, and my dad was all for it. So I ended up cutting my hair and I committed an Oklahoma State and they didn't have no scholarships. So I didn't care. I was like, you know, pay for school. So I ended up my junior year, the year I wanted to be to a player of the year, John Nate Smith award, first team all American. I'm just giving me the accolades, she's talking, but I'll talk your shit, bro. But, but, but I was a walk on. Yeah. Respect. Grades walk on ever. Grades walk on ever. And people didn't know I was walking on. I paid. Where do I reach? My junior. Go do it. They already came out with the facts. They already did. They, they, um. They put it like a man. They put it like a man. They put it like a man. They put it like a man. You're my grandfather. He's a let me see. So I said to the wack on Texas place. So I end up paying my junior year. So the year we went to the final floor and stuff like I was a walk on, I wasn't even on scholarship. I didn't go on scholarship until my senior year. To my senior. Y'all went on. I'm going to say boost is out of pocket. That should have made that happen. Did you? Daddy, people want to walk on? Walk on. He's a greatest walk on ever. Yeah. Yeah. I got, you know, I got please. Hey, I got to give it to him in Chicago. So yes, God, he might be the best walk on ever. Got it. Got it. Got it. Got it. Got it. That shot to give him to the final floor. No. No. Shout. Shout. I was talking before the podcast. Jamir Nelson was definitely first for you in college when he came to the shoes. But you had a good game that game. Let's talk about Jamir Nell every time he see me curse me out. But his shoe game went better. Nah. You crazy. I mean, you could just. You had a Nike deal. I didn't have a Nike deal. I didn't have a joint deal. I didn't have a joint deal because I was, you know, it wasn't no NIL at the time. So pops had that. Pops had that. So I just took advantage of what pops had. The littiest. That's that platinum. So at the time, like, now you can go on Nike Elite in order because you get a little, back then they used to bring your magazine and you had to go in there and order a magazine and then you get to pick your shoe. Yeah. Oh, I'm 42. Yeah. I know. So it's like, you know, as you see in the transition. So I used to make a point that when I first got to go and say I was going to wear a different pair of shoe every game. Yeah. But then if I would have cooked, like you go to my locker, I had over 30 pairs of shoes in my locker school. Yeah, really. It's a tucker. Yeah. But if I cooked in a shoe, I would stay with that shoe. I was a superstitious. So I would the same socks and then I ended up putting the socks on the same way. So if I ever put my right sock on first, it was always be my right side first, then my left shot, and then I go hoop and I like I scored another 20 ball. I do the same thing. But I'm 2k4 as well. We saw so much. The 2k4s, I had, you know, is something about my step back in them 2k4s. I got so much separation. I can only go all right though. No, right would be a fade away, two for fade away. My left. The gather. The gather step. And then my left would be a step back. Yeah. Like I didn't. It didn't matter. However you want. But it was gonna be a step back. Yeah. But I wasn't that tight player. I wasn't a one-on-one player. Like the ISO, my ISO game was trash. Yeah. Had no shame. Got enough. No, I had nothing. I just put you in the picking row. I used to hit my hip and I had Ivan McFarland, Joey Graham come to a picking row and then I bump you, put you on my hip, ree, ree, ree, and then I see the low man. He might put it on. And that's when she was teaching youngster. I was trying to. He didn't want to listen. Yeah. He wants to be Jamal Crawford. Yeah. He want to be Jamal Crawford. I had. I had. I was like, like, I didn't have that one-on-one game. Yeah. And now you should see this nigga now. You have to do the pick-up. You have to do here. Put him on your fucking hip. I'm not gonna do it again. Get him on your hip. Where the fuck is he on? I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I don't see him. I just use a button. He's right though, but the things that I was trying to tell him back then is like, "Bro, that's the game." And I said, "I was just used to trying to make the game as easy as possible for me." Yeah. That's how you try to do that. Like, if I came out there 'cause my dad was like, "You got a .5 decision-making. Easy to catch you to go." He was like, "Ain't no coach gonna give you 5-6 dribble to get your shit off." Yeah. So, my kid shit, if I was wide room for three, was going up. If I saw you close out, I was going back. If I was going right, it was gonna be a gather fade away to my right, because I wasn't going all the way in pink 'cause I probably got a block. If I go left, it was a step back. And I made sure I had the right angle. Just in case you showed me any kind of content, I was going off the glass. Yeah. So, it was like, I knew my spots. I wanna move to your overseas run. How was that? Like, did you feel like you had a transitional game when you went overseas for a little bit? Yes. Yes. So, you do all this at Oklahoma State? Yeah. Yeah. You're killing. I went undrafted. Undrafted. Yeah. Ever 17. Crazy. 17 and 5. Imagine coming out right now every time I'm a lottery. Problem. Now... Yeah, damn it. 100%. I mean, people in a lot of you getting drafted is with six points coming out, eight points. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, it's like, I was like... My dad told me, like, I was like, watching, I was like, I know I'm getting drafted. Yeah. I'll work out everybody. My dad told me, you ain't getting drafted. You ain't getting drafted? Yeah. Like, he was like, shut up. He was like, you ain't getting drafted? I ain't even going to watch the draft. He went to the casino. Him, my mom went to the casino. That's crazy. He knew. That's by the worst... That's my... My situation. In my good, worse than yours. Muah. That's how they had an inside school. Yeah. I think he already knew I wasn't going to get drafted. So, I'm going to be sitting in front of the TV like this, waiting. Like this. I'm like, oh yeah. I'm going to be sitting in front of the TV like this, waiting. Like this. I'm like, oh yeah. I'm going, yeah. The Rockets? The 2050? They took Luther Hill. They took Luther Hill. They took Luther Hill. Shut up Luther Hill. Yeah. But I'm like... Huh? Like, I'm like, I worked out for like every team. My agent at the time was David Folk, who was MJ's age. But my dad was David Folk's first client ever. Yeah. So, it was like, that was family. So, I went with him off top. Right. I was thinking like this crazy. So, it was just like, okay. And then like David was like, Oh, back in the day they used to pair you with whoever the super. He had everybody. So, just imagine like Jeff Teague is the man, right? Yeah. And I'm a rookie. But he a rookie. Like he a free agent, but he the highest free agent. So back in the day that agents used to be like, oh, if you want Jeff, you're going to have to take. Yeah. Yeah. So, package deals. So, that's what it was like when I came out. It was package. It's not like that anymore. Yeah. But it was like package deals. So, I was like, oh, David Folk got KG. He got everybody. Yeah. So, I didn't get drafted. So then I went to go what happened? I went, I played in three different summer leagues. I played in Vegas. They had one in Minnesota at the time. They had New York, Minnesota. They had Orlando. Yeah. New York. They had Boston. Boston was the other one. Oh, God. And they had Long Beach. Damn. So, it was New York. In the Minnesota, it was Cleveland, New York, Indiana, Minnesota, it was just a four team summer league at the Tigers. That was my work here. And then I left there and I ended up playing with Cleveland Cavaliers in Vegas for their summer league. Okay. But I ended up signing with the Minnesota Timberwolves as a rookie. Right. So, my rookie year, they drafted Bracy Wright and they drafted Rashad Mackenzie. Those were the two picks and then I was the third rookie. I was under, you know, I signed a camp deal. Yeah. And so, we had Marco Yarich. We had Lionel Chalmers, who played Xavier, who was a dog. And we had Troy Hudson. Troy Hudson. With the break. And then KKG was there while he's Irby at, you know, Fred was there. We had a mad dog was there. So, I'm a rookie. So, I'm there all summer. Dwayne Casey's the head coach. He just got the coaching job. So I'm there all summer. I'm training boom. We go training. We doin'. I'm like averaging like seven, eight points when I'm, when I'm getting my times only in the fourth quarter. Yeah. I'm very efficient. So, I end up making the team. And then I went to bed that night and like, matter of fact, this is the week. You not going to believe this because, but Floyd, Mike, I think it was like, Floyd Mayweather, somebody had a fight and I was staying at the wrestling hotel. You know the wrestling hotel right now. And that's where they had all the rookie staying at. So, one day KKG was like, yo, come to my house, we're going to watch the fight. You know, I'm a team man, I'm like, all right, cool. So he, his, at the time his wife, Brandy, yup, and she was like, yo, what are your stuff at? I'm like, huh? I thought I'm just going to watch the fight. He was like, nah, KKG, say you're moving with him. Nah. You told me to support him. Yeah. I know, you know, so I'm like, huh? So I go upstairs, pack my bags real quick. So, KG house, unbelievable. So, I had the whole guest house to myself. His best friend is like, T. Lewin, Chanchibilla. Yeah. So, the guest house would call the bill of sustain because I guess when, you know, his family come there, that's where they would stay. So I stayed in the guest house. So I didn't have my car at the time. He just brought this brand new CLS, Cherry Beans, for his wife. She hated the color. So he threw me the key, he threw me the key. It's like, yo, this your car young fella at paper place and everything. I'm an only person in Minnesota rookie with the CLS, 22 inch room, driving and I'm like, I'm not on contract. Damn. You know what I'm saying? I'm living. So we playing and I'm doing my thing, like, and so I make the team. I go to bed that night, I'm like, man, I'm like, I'm like, thank God, like, whoo, I go to bed. I wake up next morning, they made a trade. Yeah, they made a trade. So I'm walking into the facility, getting ready for the first day of official practice. They make a trade for Ronald Dupree to the, from the piston. So, Kevin McKill pulled me to the off and they had to cut KG cause a fit. Like that was like the fall of like KG, like leaving Minnesota. So KG's like, you ain't going nowhere, Lord, Lord, you ain't going nowhere like that. So I'm, he got me staying in Minnesota, he got me standing in Minnesota for two weeks. They trying to figure it out. Damn. And we get back to training now, I'm in the, um, I'm, my name, order, madly goes into the, it's the D league at the time. But I even go through the draft because my name was so big in Oklahoma, they allocated me to go to Tulsa with the 66ers and, um, so I end up playing like the first two months of the season in Tulsa. And I'm averaging like 18, 20, I get my first call up. So I get a call up to my hometown team, Houston Rocky. Yes, sir. He played against the Warriors. I never forget it. Play against the Warriors. That's when they had stack five, they had Baron Davis there, you know what I'm saying? So I, I check in at the game, like last two minutes of the games, like, I'm like running out there with a, like my head cut off like a chicken with his head cut and I got a rebound on a stove, the ball, like I'm just moving so fast, I'm going crazy. And we end up losing that game. So then I end up going. And this wasn't the 10 day I just got called up because 10 days haven't started yet. So we end up, my next game is in DC. A lot of people don't know I was born in DC. So I got family in DC, my possible plan for the wizard or the bullets at the time. So me and my sister are born in DC originally, but I don't associate myself with DC because we moved when I was like two years old. So I'm from, um, I scored my first NBA bucket and gets chucky Atkins. We just talked about it. That was my, that was my first NBA bucket gets chucking Atkins, uh, y'all mean, come sets aside peeking road for me coming to my right hand. And I hit a floater and my aunt, my, my dad's sister at the time, she was in the stand. So I had a family. And so that was my first NBA bucket was a floater at the, at the arena. And, um, yeah. And then I got cut the next, then we got cut the next day. I got cut the next day because no, but I got cut the next day because they had to let me go. So they went and paid extra in taxes. So I ended up flying back with the team to Houston. I had to miss one day of practice and then 10 days started. So they're me and Chuck Hayes, both sign 10 day contracts. And then I signed another 10 day after that. And then they had to make a decision or were they going to keep me for the rest of the year or they're going to let me go. So they ended up letting me go. They kept Chuck Hayes. Yeah. So I ended up going back to Tulsa finish up that year. And then that's when I went to Europe, then a team in Italy called me, um, to go playing the playoffs. And that's when I played with, um, Pooh Allen, yeah, street, you know, Pooh Allen University. He coached, he coached me at Boston. Correct. So pool was, I replaced, I didn't replace him. He was injured. I was kind of like coming in on his spot and I've never been overseas a day in my life. And so I was like, Oh, no, I was ready to check out. I'm like, they put me in a hotel, you know, you know, NBA user and they put me in a hole in the wall. And then I was like, I'm claustrophobic a little bit so I want to go raise the window. No light coming in because I had a metal sheet over the window. I'm like, Oh, man, I'm in jail, like, that's my, like, but I didn't know that was their blind. So it's a metal sheet to keep the, you know, so I would have went like this, then the metal sheet goes up. I didn't know that. Like, and the bed was small out and my dad, I call my dad, I was like, man, I'm about to swipe the card. Just know I'm about to swipe the card and I'm coming home. They can keep this bread, like, I'm just going to get ready for some lead. My dad was like, just go to the first practice. He's like, just go to, cause he know when I get around ball, I'm in my conference off straight. So I went to my first practice and I was like, okay, let me, I, I can do one more day and then I just kept letting and then I just, that was my first time planning. And I played, um, only played playoffs. I got 35,000 foot for seven games. That was more than my Glee content, my Dlee content, cause at the time, that was a year in Glee, right? No less. Yeah. Glee was my biggest contract in the, in the D league was a, we had, so this one, I feel like they should bring it to the N.I.A. because the sheet, you know what I mean? I was just speaking about this, like in the Dlee at the time, he had three content. You had an A contract. You had a B contract. You have a C contract. This is the game. Yeah. Two top dogs. You got the A contract in the A contract with $25,000. Oh, that was an A? That was an A. The B contract was 18, five. The C contract was around 15 something. So I played a week in a G three, three, three and so me and, but Narkeem was on the A contract. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and then we, and then we had our, we'll come where he was doing this thing at USC, he was, he was watching the banana. He said USC, he was a teammate of mine. Okay. Right. And he was a point guard. So we're not used to bump his all time. He thought he should be playing more than me. But he just made each other better, you know what I'm saying? And when I get called up, he will start. But when I come back, I get my spot back and it will always call friction because he'll be hooping. You know what I'm saying? But I coach at the time, coach Myers, when it be like, oh, we're going to ease you back in. I was like, no, you can't, you come and bet you just get your spot right there. Yeah. So it caused like, I already made 25,000 my first year as a professional half ever first player. Then I went to Italy and made the 35. So my member, I'm looking at, I made like 70,000 little bit and some change my, my first year as a professional athlete. And so I was like, man, I'm not going back overseas. Whatever it is. But I'm just saying, well, I made other money besides that we have, we have bonuses though. I have bonuses in my, in my, in my thing. So yeah, I have my, I have bonuses and stuff like if I scored a certain amount of points I got like this because Europe is different and get bonuses. So I told my partner, I ain't going back overseas. What was your, I mean, what was the difference though? What do you mean? Like lifestyle and I was home. I couldn't understand nothing. Nobody was saying in Italy. Oh yeah. Me either. What's the game? What's the game? The game is very strategic. I want to give them a game on that. The game is very strategic. They want to be be a playmaker. Like they were, they really want me to be a point guard. Oh, okay. I'm, but I'm a points guard points. I got points and I used to get frustrated because we'll be losing. They put me in the game and I scored a quick 15 and they take me out of the game. I'm like, yo, I'm on fire. Why are you taking me out of the game? They'll go back and Pablo Puigioni was my team. Pablo. Crazy. So I would be like, yeah, I'm cooking him everything. You know what I'm saying? Pop what he playing like over me. So I never, I didn't fit Europe, but I played Euro League, like we lost in the final foreign unit. I played on some good teams, but I was like, well, like y'all put me in the game when we down and then when we, when I get us back in the game, y'all take me out. Yeah. What was the code that she saw over there when he was across the water? Bella Nellie. Marco Bella Nellie. I think it was the first thing. Yeah. He played the wrong way. It was the first thing. And then the other one was, uh, the other one was, uh, he was playing in New Orleans. He ran off about 10 screens. What's the one that, um, and the big man who got drafted by Toronto first round. Bella Nellie. I mean, by Yarnie was the other one. I play him in Italy. Mm. Baryani. Baryani was nice. And Spain, Spain, my teammate, was talking to y'all go splitter. Damn. Yeah. I play with him. So we lost. So that was the year I won. So people don't even realize I won a D Lea Championship with the Colorado 14ers. I left them as a mother of nine. Fourteeners. So it was me. So it was our Colorado 14ers. We need people. Jersey. They got it. They did better with that. But I had sunny wheels on my team. So we were, we had an NBA team, like, certainly Hamilton was on that team. You probably play against Vernon, damn. So we all was team, we ran through. We ended up being in our Salt Lake City stars in the championship. Two days, two days later, I'm in Spain playing for the year of league championship. And then we ended up losing in the final four. And then we ended up losing to Barcelona in the ACB championship. So I could have tried to win three championships in one year. That's fine. But back to like my first year after I came back from Italy, I said, I'm not going back to Europe. So I ended up playing summer league with the Rockets. I should have got MVP of summer league. But technically I wasn't a rookie because I played. So Randy Fory that year is when Nate, Nate went crazy in that. And then Randy Fory was a rookie that year with Minnesota. I averaged 28, 8, and 8 in some of them with the Houston Rockets. Guess who my coach was? Your dad. No. Guess who my coach was? What was your coach? Tom Thibodeau. James! My nigga! James! Tell me what you want. Tim's red. Every play for me. That's, if you know, Tim's, if he like you, you're going to get every play call. Every play call for him. I had angles. I had side picking up everything with me coming off. The pig getting to all my sweet spots. He said, "You see the rim. You let it go." Tim's, bro. I had Pat Carroll who played for St. Joseph. He was on my team. So I got a lot of assists from him. And then like... But tell them if you look, like people, you've been with Tim's. Yeah. Tim's my favorite coach. I love coaches like Tim's. My best career in the NBA was coaches that fell underneath the same umbrella. Yeah. So, Tim's, Van Gundy, and Stan Van Gundy. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same. Yeah. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same. They all the same.
