Welcome to yet another New York Giants off season football update. I'm Tony Joseph, a host of Next Man Up. And I'm here to kind of commiserate with Giants fans as we navigate through an off season now that one of the worst seasons we've ever lived through season. Chantani, a hundred years of Giants football. One of the worst ever talked about it yesterday. How, oh my god, we have a third overall pick. We went from having one for like how many straight weeks, 11, feeling like 11 straight weeks to number three. And then the question was, what's Sean Marigan to do? What's Sean Marigan to do? But thank God the season's over. Well, we didn't have to wait long. Today's Tuesday, January 7th and yesterday, Mr. Marra. Sidebar, something I noticed, the way Dave and Shane refer to John as Mr. Marra. Maybe, maybe I'm too young or too hip, but it just seems weird. If he's your boss that you talk to every day, like, does anybody talk to their boss and refer to them as Mr. Like, since World War II? I don't. I've never had a, if I did that, my boss would correct me, they'd be like, stop that. Please, like, call me Bill or John or Mike, whatever your name is. It's weird. Dave was always like, oh, I have such a great cozy relationship with Mr. Marra, whom I will bow before. It's gotten a little ridiculous. Needless to say, I'm not too happy with John Marra's presser yesterday. If you haven't listened to it, it's on giants.com. His annual presser, where I think like maybe once or twice a year he speaks, but at his annual end of the year presser, where he just goes out there and in his own words, faces the music and acts like this is some sort of punishment to have to like, you know, answer some awkward questions for 10 minutes. And I guess in a way it is because when he does answer them, he goes in circles. He contradicts himself. It's confusing. It's not like he's necessarily coming across as a bad man. I'll give him that. I got to look at him and I think, oh, what a what a greedy slime ball. I think a guy who's kind of lost his way a little bit in the world of modern sports, because this is the third generation, right? So third generation of ownership, you got to grow with the times kind of. And these are what you call growing pains, I hope. So, if you don't know, you live under a rock, Brian Dayball returning as head coach, Joe Shane returning as GM. This is on the heels with the three and 14 season. And the analogy I can't help get get past in my head is that this this old man, John Marrow, is making it up as he goes. Yes, he's kind of conferencing with the Tisch family after the fact. But based on the way he speaks, based on the way the coaches speak of him, and the players, even, it just feels like he's in charge. At the end of the day, it's whatever mood he's in is going to determine the future of this franchise, which is almost like I don't purchase stock. I really don't. I'm not even sure how to go about doing that. I'm sure there are certain websites like I know about Robin and all this crazy game stop stuff. And I have a lot of peers who are like, oh, look at the stock, going on the market's good. They probably think I'm an idiot just for not even knowing what's going on. But I feel like watching the Giants has been like a stock that you've purchased and was bought by this old guy. And you're just embracing the ups and downs of whatever this old guy is going to do with his business. And that's not really how a lot of people like to wear sports. I think that's why so many sports fans like just don't even go that far. They kind of just look at it as, okay, this coach, we're coming back. Well, he did some good things. Like, they'll just drink whatever cool I just put in front of them. Oh, we had a good like 2024 draft class, you know, I mean, yeah, Malik neighbors is good and Tracy's good. But there has been plenty of there's been enough bad to have a headline on why Joe Shane got fired and have it not be confusing. You could pick any story you want. Now, I guess I'm not really an advocate of firing them or keeping them. I don't I don't really have an opinion. But it's just so apparent. And I think the reason I don't have an opinion is because it's just so apparent that this guy is making it up as he goes along. What does this make what I think? I said a while ago, like, hey, maybe if the Raiders move on from Pierce and maybe in a pie in the sky reality, the Chiefs move on from Spags, you know, maybe they win three in a row. Maybe they just decide let's let's end it there. This has been a good run. Spags wants to be head coach again. These are guys I wanted to bring in because we need to fix our defense. So that's kind of where my head was at. And then I was thinking, well, maybe we could figure out offensive coordinator and you know, with a fresh start, fresh, you know, everything let's let's turn the page. But now you got but now by bringing these guys back, you don't really have that fresh page. Like they've cleared the salary caps. They've they've got us out of Gettleman cap hell. Even with the bad contracts of Jones. Currently with Jones gone. Is there really any contract on this roster where you go? Oh, oh, no. So you got to give Shane credit there. That means they're in a position to spend money. So if you brought in theoretically, if you if you pulled the plug now, you brought a new GM say, all right, it didn't work out with Jones. We need a new chapter. We need a new quarterback. And we got money to spend. And we have the third overall pick. This is these are things you can do to entice a good candidate when everybody knows that the Giants are a little rough right now. Instead, you keep the guys. Maybe this is what you're trying to do to advertise like, hey, you know, we don't fire everybody two years. We have some stability. We didn't tank. We won a game two weeks ago. And then we decided to take after that. But no way, we didn't tank. The blatant lie is coming out of this man's mouth is it's insulting to Giants fans. It's insulting to people with brains, actually. It's not even just Giants fans. But we still have this strange loyalty to our colors. And you just you just buckle up for the ride. This is this the analogy I had. I'm I'm selling my pool table. I I got a house that had a pool table in it when we got it. I am not a pool player. I've only played casually with friends or bars or you know, just whatever. I I'm not I don't even know what you're really supposed to be doing. I just hit the ball and see if it goes in the hole. But I thought it would be cool to have a pool table in the house after having a kid and after being in the house for two years realizing I can count on one time, how many count count on one hand how many times I've played pool. I figured why not sell this thing. This is a slate pool table. It's worth some money. You know, let's let's just get it out of here, have some space and some cash in my pocket. Sounds great, right? But I also don't know what I'm doing when it comes to selling something like a pool table. Because like I said, I'm not a pool table. Pool player. So I put it on Facebook marketplace. I say, here's a pool table. I googled what people are selling used pool tables for and I offer less just because I want it out of here and I want some money. So I get like 30 plus freaking people messaging me about this pool table. Finally get a guy who's willing to come and look at it. He says he says he's a carpenter. Okay, this could work. You know, he likes it. He wants to buy it. So I hold it for him and the day he comes to move it. Holy smokes. We go to try and move this thing and you hear the crack. First, I thought it was my spine. We went to lift the pool table and I heard all this cracking. I was like, I think I'm paralyzed. I think we need to go call somebody because that was bad. Then I realized the cracking was the wood, the dry wood, whatever the hell it is. You know, I don't really understand wood. I know oak. I know maple wood is something that burns and it's something used to build things. That's as far as I can go. There's wood on my pool table that just cracked and so he goes, holy smokes. I cracked as I was picking it up very awkward. The guy already gave me a deposit. He wants it. I specifically did say in the listing that it's in a basement. It's tricky to get it out of here or might have to take it apart and he still was interested. So that's what I'm holding onto. But at the same time, it's just like I have no idea what's going to happen next. We flip the thing on its side, we take all the wood off, we see it's a slate table and the stone slate is so heavy, which is worth some money. This material is really where the money is at. But how the hell do you get it out of my basement? It is currently leaning against the support beam to my house. There's currently pieces of wood all over the floor. My poor wife, I've hijacked the laundry area by pushing all this stuff out of the way. I normally have my desk with my computer over to the left of the pool table it used to be. With it leaning on the support beam, I feel like I don't want anything near this. God forbid it does fall. I've moved everything to the other side. So here I am sitting in this corner. I'm actually sitting right next to all this mess right now as I'm recording this, thinking about the state of the giants, and it's very similar to my basement. Very similar. We walk. It sounds good. Oh, we got a pool table. We need to sell it, make some money, get it out of here, get the space. It all sounds good. Oh, we got to throw it up. Let's get you. But it never goes like you're playing it. Ever. You need a little luck. Thankfully, this guy's a carpenter. He's going to make some calls and I'm just, I'm banking on this dude, knowing what he's doing. And it's, it's a lot. And hopefully it all works out. And that's what being a giants fan is like, you sign up for the roller coaster and you know there's going to be lows. You know, there's like, like, okay, you know, we've given Jones $40 million a year. Okay, he's our franchise quarterback. Let's let's believe in him a little bit. And then that you, you immediately suffered for doing that. So now it's like, okay, well, we have a third overall pick. We can see if this guy, aller from Penn State comes out. Maybe he could be the third overall pick. Because right now you just got it. You got to go into it assuming Tennessee and Cleveland are going to go Shador and Ward. I don't think that I don't know if they will. I have no idea. I could actually see the Browns being very interested in Hunter if they could attain a quarterback and free agency. They're going to lose Winston. Obviously they have a very weird contract situation, like, I don't know what the Browns are going to do with their quarterback room. It's, it's an awkward room. I don't know what the Titans are going to do with their quarterback room. I don't even know if Shador Sanders is, is psyched or jazz about going to the Titans. I didn't see him wearing any Titan shoes in the last few weeks. So there's a million things that could happen at quarterback. You have no idea. And you don't have no idea if either of those two guys will be good either. And you have no idea if the Giants are even a good fit for anybody at this point. That's what being a Giants fan is right now. It's a clueless, lonely experience. All we have is loyalty itself. If I wish John Merritt, instead of coming out and being like, oh, we never tend, we never, instead of having all these policies and how they have to appear in the media, I wish he said two or three freaking sentences. I wish he came down to the media and said, look, I know this looks. We suck this year. I'm choosing to keep these guys. If nothing else on faith that I think we can turn this franchise around with these guys, I've had, I've been burned a lot of times. We've been wrong a lot of times. Whatever, we're doing it. Any questions? Like, if you just said that, I would have more respect for him than him acting like, oh, this is the proper thing to do. We never tank, but we go for it on fourth and seven in the first quarter against the division rival. Oh, we hold our, our coaches to a certain standard. Okay, ask Joe Judge, ask Ben McAdoo, ask Pat Schurmer, ask Tom Coughlin what they think of John Merritt bringing these guys back after a three-win season. Tell me if you think that's good for Giants football. It might be good in the future for a young and upcoming coach looking for an opportunity to go, oh, wow, this boss, you know, they really, they, they show you a little bit of more loyalty than another team, like the New England Patriots who dumped Jarrod Mayo an hour after his first season is over. It's, it's, I don't want to be the Patriots where, you know, you dump on a guy that quickly, but how are you not going to be the Patriots next year? If, if John Merritt, John Merr has painted himself into a corner now with the things he said, he's, he has said that if you bring these guys back, they better find a quarterback and they better find it fast. And if they don't, they won't be back in a year if I'm not in a good mood. That's kind of how I heard it. If I'm not in a better mood next year, which like, okay, odds are you're going to be better than a three-win season, but I think, I don't even know if about wins and losses. I think it's about seeing if this guy is the real deal, like in the, in Herbert's first year in, in the charges. Okay, you saw he's the real deal in Daniel's first year, even Caleb's first year, which has been somewhat of a disaster. You can kind of see that for Washington and for the Bears, it's like, okay, this is the QB. But I don't want to have the, I don't want to be the Bears. I would rather be Washington, which is why it makes sense, kind of, if you're going to hit the reset button at quarterback and you have all this free agent money to spend and you don't want your regime to be desperate and, and moronic. That's when you bring in the new regime. That's when you want somebody to be like, listen, here's what we're going to do. We're going to hear out anybody. If somebody really wants a quarterback at three and two or off the board, we're going to hear anything. If somebody really wants Hunter, we're going to hear out everything. You could trade down and get Dart. You could trade down and possibly get an Aller if he comes out. You got Millrow if he comes out. There's a million things they can do. They can find a way to get Kurt Cousins. That seems like the most giants thing they're going to do, bringing Kurt Cousins or, or trade for some sort of veteran bridge of some kind. They'll do that and they'll draft a quarterback. When they draft a quarterback, not clear, but they will at some point in the draft. It depends on what the other teams do at this point. That's all because Marrow probably made it seem like you have to keep this locker room together, Dave's. If you want to stay here, you have to show me you can get out the most out of elite neighbors. If you want to stay here, Dave's, you have to show me you can do something with a guy like Drew Lock. If you want to stay here, Dave's, so by some God forsaken miracle, they beat the crap out of the cult who should be embarrassed and, and relegated to another league after that loss to the Giants. They do that. And then we sit here and we go, okay, you weren't taking this one random week, but you did all these wacky things not, not just to get in the Eagles game in previous games. Okay. Well, all right, I guess we'll go for two. You know, I get, you know, we have 14 11 in the Saints games. I didn't remember that anyone watched that one. You've all been sleeping through a lot of these games. I've been watching. Maybe not as play for play like I normally do, but I've been watching and they have done such bizarre things in the last 11 games that you, you would have thought they were tanking if you were watching. Everybody tanks a little maybe marriage is set up to save face and not get a fine from Goodell. That's possible. You know, when a league sees an owner with depockets and, and he says something that makes the league look bad. It's a no-brainer what they have to do. So I can at least understand that, but don't do, don't lie to us. Don't treat your fans like they're nobody's no upset than me. I'm sure you, I'm sure you're very upset in your lifestyle that a normal fan cannot relate to. I'm sure you're very upset in, I mean, I, I, it's great that you reply to letters. Thanks. Thanks for replying to letters. Thanks for saying you're upset too. It does nothing for us, John. The only thing that you can do for us is figure out what the hell is going on. Be transparent and stick to it. Don't go all over the place. Don't act like the media is your enemy. And that's what's happened. Like, like Shane talks to the media better than Dave's these days. Dave Bull is short and snippy and rude and done and fed up. He's burnt out and I almost don't blame him, but he's making the team look bad by doing that. He's making himself look bad. He's making the giants look bad. I talk to John Merrill of time. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I talk to him all the time. Yeah. So short, so defensive. Just say, dude, I don't really understand the question. Do I ask you about interactions with your boss? I think we have to keep matters private, you know, within the organization. If John Merrill has something to say about our conversations, he'll come out here and speak on the microphone. So just say this one time, Dave. Say it one time. Say, I will not be answering any questions about interactions with John Merrill anymore. Because you're making me look bad. You're making the team look bad. And I don't like what's going on here. Say that because that's probably what you're feeling. Instead of us being like, yeah. Yeah. I talk to John. Yeah. Yeah. I love Mr. Merrill. But you say it with such a tone. And you see, I see how you talk to some of the players sometimes. Like, there's a lot of anger here. There's a lot of anger here, Dave's. People make comments about his weight loss. That's not appropriate. Don't comment on that. You don't know how he lost the weight. People publicly saying he's didn't see anything. Maybe he did. Maybe there were side effects. I don't know. But don't don't go there. If you're going to be fiery, Dave's be fiery to the media in a way that is transparent and true to who you are, not. Oh, I'm a face for the Giants. I'm not allowed to say what I really want to say because I don't want to create a distraction with the team. There was more authenticity with Malik neighbors to an 18 feet of bubblegum talking to the media, talking smack this year than there was you. And I do not support neighbors doing that. That was, that was bad. But it was, I was honest, truthful. And I also got a comment on these questions. These guys like, John, what did the Giants have to do? What is it? Because I guess they don't even know what to ask because they're so dumbfounded. But the got the media members who were in there that I guess in the Giants facility for this discussion with Mera also weird how it was just like on the field randomly, not at a podium or anything. He takes the easiest questions. They are layups. What you would expect going into it. And he's acting like this is some immeasurable suffering like, Oh, I'm facing the music. Oh, I can't believe I have to do this. John, come on, man. Next year, I don't care how many years we've got one on one. Maybe one on one will be a year. Do not go into it. Like we have to wear these silly uniforms. Do not go into it as we have to do this. We got to do that. Get it together. Fix the defense. Honestly, I think the most important thing is we have to fix the defense. I guess it's quarterback and all line. But it's been quarterback and all line for six years. Even when we were winning that one year where Jones had a semi decent year, acting like he had a great year is not even, you know, he had a good year. I wouldn't call it a great year. But at the time, I said he did his job and he didn't turn them all over. And that's what they were asking him to do. Then they asked him to do more. He couldn't do it. His body broke. And they humiliated him. And honestly, biggest mistake John Mera made, letting him be released. Because what maybe this is why he feels bad about it all. How do you justify these guys losing every single week when your captain just abandoned the team and asked for release because he couldn't handle what they were saying about him. Dude, honestly, like I know it sucks. I know there was emotion. I felt bad for him. You made ninety six million dollars in two years. You want to play off game. You played six years with the New York football Giants and you're going to continue your NFL career. Get over it. Most people don't even get the chance to sniff what you're doing. Were there big shoes to fill behind you? I and did you not even come close? Yeah, that sucks. Okay. Danny Times is a good, good kid. He's a good person. If I met him, I'd be honored to meet him. So I don't really want to talk badly about him. But you know what John Mera should have said when Daniel Jones said, "Can you release me?" Say, "Have you talked to the coach? Have you talked to your teammates? Is that what they want?" Not, "Oh, I feel bad for you, my son. Go spread your wings." I was so certain he was going to go to the Eagles for like a second. He could have and he would have had every right. And it's just so moronic in so many ways. Imagine that. Imagine he did go to the Eagles and instead of, you know, Nanny McKee just joking. I was calling him Nanny McKee in the Eagles season finale when they were playing their backups against us, the quarterback's name McKee. Imagine that would turn out to be Daniel Jones. Imagine Daniel Jones played so badly that the Eagles lost and the Giants ended up with like seven or nine. That would have been fitting. That would have been the John Mera cherry on top of the Sunday. And everybody's still wants to talk about the sake one thing. We got to move on from this. The guy's great on Philly. Of course he is, but we have to at least address the commercial because Mera spoke about it in his presser. He took it on the chin. There's no way that didn't piss him off. And there's no way that's not an a-hole thing to do from sake one. Doesn't mean sake one doesn't do nice things. He's a charitable human. He works with young players. There's showing stories on Fox like, oh, he reached out to Tyrone Tracy and their friends. I don't want them to be friends. Just a thought. Maybe I'm too old school here, but I don't want them like like Tyrone Tracy never got to be teammates with sake one Barkley. Why is he treating him like a teammate? Oh, let's work out together. What next are the Eagles and Giants going to go on vacation together? Tyrone Tracy can work out with Malik neighbors or the Giants running backs coach. Like, come on. I get from Tyrone Tracy's perspective. If sake one speaks to you, you listen. I do understand that. But sake one, you screwed us on purpose. You didn't have to go there for him to say like, oh, I had no choice. You left it up to your agent who you changed and you left offers on the table over the course of years. And you got buttered over a franchise tag, which by the way, Vikings franchise tag Sam Darnell right now. And if you don't, you're stupid. Because you don't know if after one good season, if he's really that good, and he had one bad, he looked really bad in the biggest game of the season against the Detroit Lions, who basically ran the mad and gauge eight on him for an entire game. And he couldn't get his fantastic receivers, the wall. So what does that mean? It means we got a problem. If you're a Vikings fan, it means you got a prop because Sam Darnell, you don't really know how good he is. But at least you got JJ McCarthy. Don't you want to wait and see another year with those two in the same room franchise tag? Darnell, you don't need to do anything with JJ. And if I hear one more giant friend say, oh, the giants to trade for JJ McCarthy, that's the epitome of stupid. If in one year, I mean, I guess we were so used to the Giants just doing something like extending Jones in two years later, just pulling the plug completely. But at least that was sort of in the fine lines of the contract that that might be coming. In this case, imagine the Giants going, you know what JJ, we don't think you're good enough. We'd rather have Malik neighbors. And then the following year, trading at pieces for him, I guess you could argue, oh, well, at least now he gets to play with Malik neighbors. It just doesn't make any sense. You could have had him for nothing. And I'm still pissed because you could have had Michael Pennix for nothing. I got laughed at on next man up when I said Pennix will be a first router. People said like, what do you think he's going to be in the top 10? That's crazy. I got laughed at. And then everyone laughed at the Atlanta Falcons who by the way, yeah, they choked at the end of the season. Pennix looks great. He looks great. I don't know how he'll develop. I don't know any of that. But if you want a true pocket passer, they can put a ball on somebody's hip that can do the back shoulder fade over and over and over can zip it so hard a DB can't get there. That's him. And I don't know why the Giants wouldn't have wanted that if they were not sure about Daniel Jones going into the 2024 season, which we know they weren't because we saw it on TV. We saw it on Max HBO go HBO Max, whatever the hell it is we saw it on that. So buckle up Giants fans. They're bringing them back. There's no logic. There's no rhyme or reason. There's no explanation. It's continuity for continuity sake. It's an owner that feels guilty. We are signed up to whatever mood this guy is in. And you just don't know what you're going to get. Buckle up for safety. This has been another New York Giants football off season update. We'll keep an eye on things with signings. I think the next big thing is what are the Giants going to do with the defensive coordinator? Bowen is a dead man walking. He probably should have been fired mid-year for his comments on OK and not even knowing how good OK was last year and how little he utilized him this year. And Shane, everyone talks about Saquon. You lost McKinney. McKinney has been excellent for Green Bay expect him to make some plays in the playoffs like he did for us by the way. Game winning tackle. Hello. I miss McKinney even after the ATV thing. I think the Giants could have showed him a little loyalty. Hell, they might have even kept him for less after what he went through with the hand. I don't know. I don't know. But just saying we got to fix the defense. McKinney was the captain of the secondary. That's become clear. You got some young talent in Newbin. But you got to find a way like we can't keep relying on a Dory Jackson. We do need another corner. We need another true safety. Belton is doing better. Banks has been terrible. Whole secondary probably means a whole overhaul and it starts with the coach, which is why I was like spags, spags, spags. Because that man knows how to take the Craig dolls of the world, you know, like your fifth string corner and just put him in on a blitz and then all of a sudden he's impactful in doing his job enforcing bad passes. I like it. I don't think defense is ever that complicated. You saw what the lines did to a quarterback like Sam Darnold. Put eight guys in the box, rushed and pressed like hell every single play. If you press every single play, you hold every single play. You're going to get away with it a lot of the time. They can't call holding every play. This was the P Cara Legion of Bloom strategy for years. Press and hold, grab and twist, give everybody a purple nerpl at the line of scrimmage. That works. The lines did it. Darnold couldn't get the timing. He couldn't get his receivers. He was missing high. He couldn't figure out what's going on. He was rattled from all the hits. Honestly, like I don't understand how like the Green Bay Packers should do that to Jalen Hurts and Sake One shut down the run attack attack like defenders need to be attacking. So many defenders just sit and read and watch and drop back the other day I was watching the 13 seconds with the Chiefs and the in the bills remains the stupidest defensive concept I've ever seen. A jailbreak blitz would have been better and that would have been stupid but that would have been less stupid than how stupid they were. What's the one thing that can beat you a field goal? Let's defend the touchdown. Let's drop everybody back. Let's give them as much space as humanly possible. Let them zip it in. That seems like the Bowen way. Hey, hey, let's let's put all the pressure on Dexter Lawrence. Like let's make Brian Burns mostly irrelevant especially after Kvon gets hurt. Let's do stand up, sit and read, cover two. Stand up, sit and read, cover two. Oh, it's underneath. Oh, it's over our heads. Oh, it's underneath. Oh, it's over our heads. Oh, oh, oh, oh. We suck. Bowen was awful and Debo really wanted him. So you've got to fix this. And if you don't, in a year with a new quarterback, they're going to end up firing Joe Shane and Brian Debo and we're going to be the Chicago Bears.
