[music] Good evening. I have a very fair view to come to our little expiré this evening. Ladies and gentlemen, please stand by for Cookie on the Big L. But my hair is still in courage. You stupid bull. Where are we going tonight? Oh, the usual cocktail joint. Big girl. [music] At 0700 hours tomorrow morning, my shutdown disk will be activated, and all mental and physical operations will cease. Then what? I don't know. Maybe I'll get a job as a disk jockey. And now, here he is. It's Cookie. Oh, no! Music. Music. Oh, yes, it is. Cookie, live and lively with another Thursday evening, Swari. Welcome aboard for two hours of wonderful music and a fair bit of mayhem into the bargain. And thanks to Gary Jackson for the last hour, who will be back same time tomorrow, and he will be back for a little tinkle with the old Johanna for a little bit later on. [music] Music. That's our middle name. Wonderful. Music. The I.G.L. First of all, let's head into our 500 to get things underway this evening. And a gentle start to the Swari. [music] Music. Music. Music. Music. The more I see you, the more I want you. Somehow it's me, but just girls and girls. With every sign, I become more mad about you. More loss without you, and so it goes. Can you imagine how much I love you, the more I see you? As years go by, I know the only one for me can only be you. My arms won't free you, and my heart won't try. [MUSIC] [APPLAUSE] [MUSIC] [APPLAUSE] Can you imagine how much I love you, the more I see you? As years go by, I know the only one for me can only be you. My arms won't free you, and my heart won't try. [MUSIC] You get a positive charge out of big girls. Do you believe in magic? A really young girl's heart? How the music can free her? Whenever it starts and it's magic. If the music is proofing, it makes you feel happy like an old type of movie. I'll tell you about the magic and the free of soul. But it's like trying to tell a stranger about a rock and roll. Do you believe in magic? Don't bother to choose if it's a joke than music or rhythm and blues. Just go and listen. It'll start with a smile and then wipe off your face no matter how hard you track. You beat, start tapping, and you can't seem to find how you back there. So just blow your mind. [MUSIC] If you think in magic, come along with me. We'll dance until morning, just you and me. And maybe if the music is right, I'll meet you tomorrow. So I need a night and we'll go dancing. Maybe then you'll see how the magic's in the music and the music's in me. Do you believe in magic? Yeah, believe in the magic of the undersault. Believe in the magic of a rock and roll. Believe in the magic that can set you free. Oh, I've got nothing in here. Like I do believe in magic. Like I do believe, believe, believe. Like I do believe in magic. Ah, too far. I've had 500 to get us underway this evening at a nice gentle start. If you think it's going to continue like that, you've got another thing coming. So the love in spoonful, do you believe in magic? And Chris Montes opening up proceedings, the more I see you. So what else have we got on the menu to tempt you with this evening? Well, let me see. We have a long song from David Gates. The barons and the commentators will be along to bring a smile to you face a little bit later on this hour. We've got a more magic, a magic choice for our hour to open a vote. We'll see what that's all about very soon indeed. For part of hour two, we'll be taking you back to this very week, 1973, for our 5 from 10. Chart recall. I've got to do what track later on this hour, and yes, of course. Wouldn't be Thursday without a sing-long, so I hope you're in good voice. And of course your emails and requests. We've got quite a few on the stack already. So if you'd like to get through, as always, it is cookie@bigelradio.co.uk or studio@bigelradio.co.uk on the phones and believe a message. On 012 5 808 013, that's the UK number 012 5 808 013. Text us via the Big L smartphone app. Tweet us @bigelradio. Get through via the website. Get through via our Facebook group this evening. And let's see. We've got checking in already very good evening to Zoe and Mike in hitch into Lorna in Keswick to Howard in Loudon to Rick in Toronto and also to Brian John. We've got John in Lamb, John in Chorley. We're around Gary Jackson's just nipping in there, so it's good to have you all in this this evening. Anita in Epson is just checking in, but she'll be checking out very soon because she's off to her. So she'll catch us on listen again. Never mind yet. We'll save the best stuff for you. Fear not. Oh yeah, I'm afraid we won't have Anita's doll sit tones for our sing along this evening, so I hope you'll be joining in this sing along. Anyway, let's head into the 80s. Right now, let's crank things up with a bit of ultra-vox. Big L. It's a blast. Standing on my own road. It didn't mean that much to me. I thought I had it all. I didn't see the mystery. I must have a very good evening to Serja and Boy in Zelsac. Good to have you with us as well. And let me see. Who's in for a quest this evening? First in. It was Chris in Hollyhead who said how about Stompus Maximus and the good old boys? AKA Def Leppard plus their Rodey. And their version of a song that was actually top of the UK sing was charts the week that I was born. And so what's that? That would be coming you way next to a very different sounding version of it, but a very well-known song. Zoe in Hitchin says hi in. Will you please play Wishing and Hoping by Dusty Springfield for Mike and me this evening? I will indeed. We're waiting and Wishing and Hoping that our new granddaughter will arrive safely soon, probably next week. But you never know. Best of luck. Hope everything goes smoothly there. Meanwhile, my family keeps coming round to watch our TV. Why can't they fold their own? Can't think why and what it is they want to watch. No, neither can I. As they can't get normal channels at home. No, me neither. I've got rid of my TV license a long time ago. So we have seen quite a bit of them. Oh, well, that's one good thing anyway. All the best of you in the gang from Zoe in Hitchin. Very good evening to Brian and Norinien St. Albans, who say greetings cookie and all. We are still without our motor part. Oh, my goodness. That's taking a long time, isn't it? On orders. So it was a juggling act to see where we had to be this week and to decide how we would get there. For our music track, could we please choose between Katrina and the way of Sun Street or Bruce Springsteen Girls in their summer clothes? Well, we'll get Katrina on the way for you fairly shortly. So we might get Bruce in a bit later on if we get time. We'll see how things go. Rick in Toronto says that any chance of John Layton and Sun is his she. That's on the stack for you. John in Charlie says, "How about to Genesis? I know what I like in your wardrobe." Yes, Laura will enjoy that one as well. I know she likes a bit of Genesis. That is on the stack for you as well. Actor Alec Baldwin's trial on involuntary manslaughter charges continues in the Santa Fe court in New Mexico. The actor was holding the prop gun that was loaded with a real bullet that killed the cinematographer on the movie set Rust more than two years ago, ever since Iris Pitzer has more. On the first day of testimony, the 12 jurors heard New Mexico's prosecutor accuse Alec Baldwin, of which she described as playing make believe with a real live gun in the workplace. Attorneys for the actor known for his work on the show "30 Rock and Other Roles" countered that the blame rested with the crew members responsible for firearm safety on the set for allowing a real bullet to be loaded into a prop gun. The film's armor was convicted of the same involuntary manslaughter charges earlier this year. Baldwin, who has pleaded not guilty, faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted. More witness testimony is expected today, although it remains unknown whether Baldwin himself will testify during the trial, which is expected to last about two weeks. Consumer prices dropped 0.1% on a monthly basis, helping to bring the annual rate of inflation to 3% down from 3.3% in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Today's result represents a significant drop of the CPI over time, which reached a peak of 9.1% back in June 2022. US President Joe Biden has released a statement saying today's report shows that we are making significant progress fighting inflation.
