An Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza on Tuesday killed at least 29 people and injured dozens more, according to Palestinian health officials. According to Reuters news agency, eyewitnesses on Wednesday said that the strike took place while displaced people, mostly women and children, had gathered to watch a football match. Israel's military says the strike targeted a Hamas fighter and is reviewing reports that civilians were harmed. This comes as ceasefire talks are set to resume in Doha on Wednesday, with Egyptian, US and Israeli officials expected to attend. But Hamas warned this week that a fresh Israeli assault in Gaza could jeopardize the negotiations. William Denzlow reports from Baghdad. Qatar and Egypt have been leading mediation efforts over the past nine months. Along with the ceasefire, they're seeking a return of Israeli hostages taken during the October 7th attack and a release of Palestinian prisoners. Hamas has made concessions in recent days, but says a new Israeli assault on Gaza City could take negotiations back to square one. William Denzlow, Baghdad. The first full day of the NATO summit is underway in Washington, D.C., as the military alliance pledges more support for Ukraine. Nick Harper reports from Washington. If Tuesday's ceremony to mark 75 years of the NATO alliance was all about looking back, Wednesday's proceedings will all be about looking forward, working out next steps for Ukraine. It won't receive full membership during the summit, but there will be a discussion about its path to membership. The NATO allies have already pledged five additional air defense systems for Ukraine. Even though Ukraine's president, Vladimir Zelensky, had asked for seven, there's likely to be new ammunition and arms for Ukraine, including Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. And NATO allies will also discuss how to prepare themselves to strengthen their own capabilities and look to grow NATO's industrial defense capacity to match the might of Russia. The head of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has warned against rushing the withdrawal of peacekeepers from the east of the DRC, due to the ongoing violence between government forces and rebels. Chris Ochamringer has more from Kinshasa. The UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC withdrew its troops from the eastern province of South Kivu in June this year in accordance with an agreement signed with the Congolese government. The rest of the troops are supposed to withdraw from ituri and North Kivu provinces by the end of December 2024. But the head of the peacekeeping mission says there should be no rush because the process has brought up new challenges.
