A festival of fertility and purification, Lupercalia was celebrated near the coming spring to honor Rome's founders, Romulus and Remus. The maidens at the festival would put their name into an urn in the center of town, where the bachelors would then choose one name at random. That couple would remain paired for the duration of the festival, and oftentimes got married afterwards, making February an ancient month of Sex & Fertility....
