My guest today is my friend, John Rowley. He's a best-selling author of the American, he's an American lifestyle strategist, a TV personality, a fitness celebrity, and he's inspiring millions into action. John's first book, Climb Your Letters to Success, without running out of gas, was a runaway best-seller. John is a pioneer in combining peak performance principles with physical and spiritual disciplines, so you can have lasting success. John and I have become great friends and I can tell you that this fellow has some very interesting credentials, including being a college athlete whose career was cut very short by a near-fatal car crash. John has had the illustrious career of being a janitor and from there, he had the nerve to tackle the high-powered world of Manhattan real estate and their dynamic international field of bodybuilding and fitness. He was one of the youngest senior VPs in a major real estate company in Manhattan, and on top of that, those of you who have been a fan of the big Ani, you know, Arnold Schwarzenegger, you've actually seen a piece of John's real estate because John owned a gym which was featured in the movie Pumping Iron, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. Today John is an indie man speaker, an author, a contributor to the media, including being a regular contributor on the Fox News and Martha Stewart. Dear listener, please help me welcome my mate, star of The Bald and the Beautiful, the man who is a legend in his own wife runs, John Rowley. Thank you, thank you for having me on, I must say the early part of an introduction was the most provocative I've ever had, and when you told me to dress up for this show I put a tuxedo on, I didn't realize we were supposed to get dressed like that. Anyway, you want my friend, that's why I never tell my guess what I'm going to wear, you can wear whatever is good for you, please share with our listeners what you are wearing today, John, for this occasion. I am wearing a light pink tuxedo with a dark pink bow tie, the appropriate ruffles, spline in the cuffs, and my shoes are spitched on. Oh, you are a man of the 70s. Well, only a true man can wear a pink dove and you know that, and apparently you are a true man. Well, we are very honored to have you join us in the Intimate Space, John. So let's start off by getting to know a little bit about you or some of your intimate bits. So in the tradition of the show, John, how about you share with our listener something that most people wouldn't know about you? Well, you gave all of my good secrets away. Only thing, you were talking about not letting anybody pick you down and people earlier on you were saying how you are in charge of your own destiny and you have one secret that I have, and I don't know that I put this in my book, I don't think I did, but when I was in seventh grade, I had spent years in Catholic school, I spent seven years in concentration camp. And one of the nuns was very, very, very, very me, especially because I was an active kid. So one day we were going through the coke closet and she was at the end of the coke closet was a big cage where she put all of her books and stuff. It was a Friday afternoon. I was the last one leaving the coke closet and all of a sudden my hand, I lost control of my hand and I watched, it was like watching a movie, my hand reached out, closed the gate to the case he was in and i walked out of her scene and walked all the way home what you have a look like a closet so let's put this into context i did feel very i do not know that i don't know that i think that all weekend all my friend i've got news for you there's fires burning when he's here but i think i can find mister donovan who is a school janitor now hold on the whole story and i was really really destroyed about it because i knew i had found the wrong thing and he just got left and you know i don't know what it means to know what it was you and i'll keep her in there a little bit longer will do the old goods from good all that the whole day the whole day he was three o'clock he played letter at a five o'clock place they didn't get two hours it's beautiful she was very humble when we came back to school on monday i'm going to guess since you would kind of guess my little secret that nobody from grandma's school is listening so that is beautiful and that's a so what how did you treat you when you said it was pretty rough the um... i would they would basically beat me and uh... when they couldn't get and the other kids would give in and i was always very stubborn and i just told myself you know what i think i'm i i didn't stop consciously tell myself but subconsciously i think i just told myself i'm not going to break me right they would crack my knuckles with the ruler will point whatever piece of what they had and when they couldn't get me to cry like they got the other kids to cry they would take it and smack it over my fingernails into my fingernails term black and blue yeah so that you know just the loving nature of the nuns that i went to school with that's you know and uh... and you still would consider yourself a man of faith i'm a man of faith i don't go to the catholic church i go to an assembly of god church right yeah well you know what it is enough to put your religion for life well it's putting up people i don't like the people that's what you know you know you're allergic to black and white when i go to do i keep my hands in my pockets like when i passed the penguins cup place penguins that make you very nervous that's what he sees penguins is like that and i'll say this to the nuns they weren't all like that only about 90 percent of them do it one or two nice ones oh but they're not to it but when i was able to stop being none and i'm happy with anybody's blessing i'm not being critical of the fact catholic faith i was telling a funny story yeah of course we know it's like we're not taking it as that at all john so john you you wrote your book of course which is climb the letters to success without running out of mose and i was going to say gas is that right without running a gas mate i don't know that i could do that i don't like to do it out because i've always got gas i prescribe to a high protein diet most of the people who are like that they have plenty of gas as well yeah because i know you know as a as a as a fellow bodybuilder with creatine we're not going to run out of that stuff and i just want to know if in your book that's what it says that you know who really want to be successful take creatine because you're like gas all day long the creatine will definitely keep the gas so john you you know in in i read out in the introduction that you there was a point there where you were a janitor and then you transitioned into real estate that's that's a pretty big transition i i would imagine particularly in manhattan yeah so tell us about that tell us a little bit about how you how you went from that place which i've got to imagine must you know i'm making this up and it's not a judgment on anybody but i've got to imagine it would feel a bit like the bottom of the barrel to going into a world that is potentially massive i mean it's the world even of of uh... trump or whoever you know i mean yeah real estate manhattan so tell us about how you made that transition in fact i had lunch with trump about six or eight weeks ago put me up to go up that lunch with them but is that right you know the transition the transition from it it was a personal transition obviously but let me just step back it well i didn't feel like i was at the bottom of the bucket um initially i did because i was so damaged i took that job because i had a very very big car accident i had a hard time walking my father was a custodian engineer in new york city which means he managed new york city schools he was suit and fly manager and he did very well he taught i knew if i stayed in that business and if i got the appropriate education everything else i could climb the ladder there and i did i stayed in the schools for probably about five years i know you i started off as a working-use janitor and then worked my way into the boiler room as an assistant engineer or a parentist engineer so i didn't necessarily feel as at the bottom of the bucket but i certainly felt like i wasn't fulfilling my potential if i had a great job it just wasn't what i wanted to do with what i didn't feel like that was what my my life was supposed to count for and my dad did a great job supporting us but what i did is um i got him to jay train which is right out in front of the school that i worked at i worked at franklin klian high school in brooklyn and i put the jay train into the city and i i got to the 59th street bridge and i stayed on the long island city porta so i had a 59th street bridge and i looked at the skyline i'm in hand every night and i challenged myself that i was in the windows door interviewing and i had to rinse myself first before i knew i can convince anybody else you know i didn't even own a suit back then i owned a suit that we got married in and that was it so is that the one you're wearing today you know i'm wearing a nicer well i'm wearing something actually much nicer now and the one i got when i got married i was about a hundred and sixty pounds dripping wet it wouldn't even i would have built it my legs into it right but i it convinced myself to go in and start interviewing i started interviewing now you walked through the new york times that interview were basically probably 250 or 300 you small medium and large companies every company that i can meet with a new york city i interview with the standard response i got was if i got in front of anybody was that i was too young i was in my 20th they all told me to come back when i was in my 40s maybe even my 50s because that was the average rate starting out about us starting Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, somewhere else and then if you put 20 years and then you come in to Manhattan and thirdly you know get an education go get some college i didn't i didn't get back to college after my car accident i had that car accident between my freshman and sophomore year of college so with most things i kept interviewing finally somebody must have been maybe not completely a wide awake gave me a job and it was one of the top three companies in Manhattan it was William B. Mac gave me a job and what i realized my very very first day at work was i knew even less than i thought i knew that what happens is i had a good old meeting at seven paul given you how he helmsly happened to own the on the building it was co-op but he still owned the majority of the shares in the building i was there to go to the board meeting that night i went to the board meeting and when we're walking into seven paul given you a board meeting mr harris my boss looks at me and says join i'll take care everything you just do the minutes i'm thinking of myself no problem minutes i was an athlete i could time anything so we go through the meeting went well president of the board happened to be um the i think his name is pakdanice pecking him but it was he was the president of american expressed at the time and then the uh mr helmsies represent and it was the only on paul and everybody else i sat there time to meeting go to the office the next day this is my second day at work talking to my secretary my boss comes down any chance of course the office goes mr early can you have the minutes of my on my desk in an hour and i want to impress him dov so i shattered a craft to the office mr harris i could do you one better than that 72 minutes and he's hysterical he said he could go you're a car you're gonna lighten up this office you're gonna this is gonna be such a light place with you around him because my sister's gonna be real light because they're gonna fly me i don't know what i'm doing so i go to my office my secretary when the comes in she slams it to a behind the leaves over my desk like a pit pole and she goes first off you're an idiot that was positive reinforcement decline that i got in school growing up thank you thank you are you ready to any nuns i know your second i'm not losing my job because you don't know what you're doing she was the minute she's not time in the meeting it's the corporate records it's the most important thing that you do i just gave her a try linda you got two choices first you can tell everybody that i don't know what i'm doing i'll get fired and then you'll go work for somebody else somebody went to harvard wartner yeah and you'll have a boring year because they know what they're doing or you can help me do these minutes i guarantee you this will be a very exciting year she doesn't it was well we're gonna we're beautiful that is for sure and and he is the author of climb the letters to success without running out of gas and it's a different kind of gas than you might think of but without running out of energy and he really helps you to understand the combination of why physical health and fitness is so important in your climbing the letter to success in in the financial and success world that those two things are important and connected now of course as you heard back there you can call in at eight seven seven two three zero three zero six two if you have questions about about getting more successful and about how maybe your health could improve or or how your health is so related to becoming successful and if you have a question specifically maybe about where you think that you're stuck and john and i will do our very best to help you come through that because as you heard it before the break john talked about having this major car crash being completely debilitated looking really taken out uh ending up as a janitor and then moving up into the real estate world of Manhattan so really i mean bottom line is if john can do it you can do it yeah you know and aside from that he was tortured by penguins so so you know add that to the list of things that to get in the way of you becoming successful and you can see that john made it happen anyway so if you're listening in and you want to call in you can do that again eight seven seven two three zero three zero six two we're happy to take your call and you'll speak to our lovely producer Rebecca meanwhile while waiting for that john and i are going to carry on so john so you've got this job working in real estate um not going to clear what you're doing timed a meeting as opposed to doing the minutes where did that go to well i panicked so i did it i looked around and this is really an important lesson i looked around and i saw i had a pretty big package of buildings larger than the average property manager some of them had already given 30 days notice and if i lost the enough buildings i wasn't going to keep my job actually if i lost one building i wasn't keeping my job so i did i looked around and see what the problems were and all the problems in the buildings that i had were physical problems things that i could fix because i knew what to do inside of the building i didn't know the finances and the and the uh minutes and corporate stuff but i knew that so what i decided to do was to focus on my strengths while enhancing my weaknesses to enhance my weaknesses i i introduced myself to the cleaning lady who cleaned the floor of our maddison avenue office i gave her a twenty dollar bill she gave me the key for one hour to all the offices of the corporate executives i went into their offices make copies of all them and it's not all their minutes but a sampling of the minutes and a sampling of their letters because i didn't have to write a letter either put them back use those as a template got to meet the fight the uh the um chief financial office of the company the controller and i had him start teaching me how to read financial statements but i knew i had to do something quick because if i i didn't have two three weeks or even two or three months to learn how to do those things and maintain my job so i decided to do this the very first Friday night i was there i called the staff of seven-paulke having a very first building i went into i knew the staff a little bit i had already met them once and i knew harry helmsley was the sponsor and the board most of the board members were pretty affluential people i figured if i could do something that people would take notice so what i did is i went in and i called the whole staff to working with me at midnight and i showed them how to buff the floors how to polish the brass clean the glass maintain the boilers so we would burn less oil maintain the elevators properly so we didn't have the colon elevator mechanic every month and basically save the building money and this was not a strategy on my my pot i was acting out of fear it was not inspiration it was more desperation but i knew i had to do something i wasn't just gonna sit still and let myself fail right so what happened was Saturday morning people wake up they walk out and they start telling my staff what's going on i could see myself in the brass i could see myself in the floor the the um the marble was absolutely incredible and they also the same thing we got a crazy new property manager you know he's nice guy young guys in his 20s he came in here Friday night worked the whole night with us when his jeans we've never seen a guy in his jeans before the work you usually dub these guys show up with their Rolex on they get out of a near they get out of a car and you know they will be a big shot you know and uh what happened was very very quickly i became very well known in that industry simply because i was different right now if i would walk around three eyes that wouldn't have been a positive difference this was a positive difference i was a guy who was and was a pretty corrupt industry so i was honest i didn't you know i didn't do a lot of this honest thing the other guys did and i was a hard worker and i was wanting to go go talk to the staff and another school that i had it i was i could speak to the board president so harry helmsley equally as well as i could speak to the men in the in the buildings and um so out of that out of that act of desperation just knowing that i had to act to stay successful or to even maintain my job it may be one of the most well-known guys i've been having real estate within weeks you know you've said something i think is very important and i think it's really important for our listener as well and that is that there you were not really knowing what you were doing it would have been easy to get frozen uh not do anything and instead you went to what your own strengths were and you applied your strengths to really have you stand out as being different to have you not be one of the regular guys doing the regular thing and it gave you a position of power not in in the sense of lauding over but power in the sense of that people wanted to pay attention to you and i think it's really an important lesson because all too often we come up against an obstacle or a challenge and we go you know i'm not qualified i don't have enough experience i don't have enough training i can't do it no one is going to believe me i'm going to look like a big flunky fraud and although you know from what you're saying i don't think you believed all those things but you didn't let it stop you right i didn't let no i didn't let any of us stop me right and that's the point is that you didn't let it stop him you know and this is listener you know that we've talked so much about finding your own genius blind spots finding your own uh unique value set that part of you that has value that you don't even recognize yet or anymore that you've lost that sense of it and here's john putting himself in that place now you could say with the world has changed and it's not like that anymore but you know you have to think about here's a guy talking about going into a real estate world from being a janitor guy it would have been easy for anybody to dismiss him especially when they asked him to take the minutes and he tells them it was 74 minutes was the meeting i mean you know it's gonna look like a first-class dingleberry right he's not gonna look brilliant doing that but he didn't let it get him down john you must i know i know you coach and i know and i should be fair and i know that you coach very very successful people but you also work with people who are really just sort of getting off the ground right absolutely absolutely so i don't we okay go i'm sorry no it's okay go ahead i was gonna say we all go through things like this even even as we reach the next level yes i don't i don't want anybody out there thinking that dub and i don't go through challenges as well but the point is is the same principles that helped me through the period of time back then 20 years ago almost 30 years ago of the same principles gov and i both use today when it's time to get ready i found myself this this very weak a little bit a little bit down about something i actually called about governor to talk through something i was a little down and one thing i realized though and i write about this my book and i coach people through this is the importance of physiology we all know what a depressed what personal looks like our physiology reflects it we're breathing shallow ahead of it down and everything else in order to reverse your your depression with the reverse your negative cycling your life reverse your physiology that's the very first thing you need to do and that's because that's why i stand a little animated on on the phone and everything else the more energetic you are the most successful you're going to be in your life doesn't mean you need to be a maniac talking a hundred miles an hour but if you can engage your physiology then your psychology is gonna follow does that make sense pep makes perfect sense i fully agree with you and it's exactly what i what i teach myself you know why don't why don't you do why don't we do that why don't you give a okay listen here's what i want you to do i want you to listen to john for a minute you know and i say this to you on every show it because it's important i want you to get out of pen and a paper and write down what you're getting because this is not just entertainment this is edutainment you want to make sure you get an education in the process of it so make sure you take your notes because john's gonna you know is giving you some great valuable information here and he's going to continue to do so so john let let's pretend we've got somebody our listener is on the other end and they're feeling like you know i really want to make some success here i'm really struggling and i really want to get through but i just you know i'm feeling quite defeated today this person's feeling defeated they're feeling a bit sort of beaten down that the money's not really flowing in yet it's about to flow in but you know it's when is about it's kind of the waiting a little bit and the bills are a little bit more fluid in their flow than the cash flow is and they're feeling a bit defeated and everybody all of us you me everybody's had those moments so give us a physiological exercise something we could do right now and i'm going to ask you listener to do this as john guides you through something that they can do john that's just going to get them to shift that consciousness a little bit to see things a little bit differently and maybe you and i'll play tag with this and and and take it to the next level absolutely now i want a backtrack just two seconds yeah for many many years i learned to think positive but thinking positive doesn't help you if your physiology is not engaged because eventually your body isn't it is going to get physiology will pull down your psychology basically if you if you're sitting there right now and say you are in a position like bub is talking about finances are a little bit a little bit tight but if things aren't going the way you want to go you got these big goals but you haven't been able to follow through pay attention to the way you are we all recognize when somebody's depressed but then you're probably looking down and your eyes are down you're probably breathing very shallow your shoulders are slumped when you're speaking you're probably speaking very slow now that your physiology is like that when you're walking you're probably walking slow and your gesture is a slow everything's kind of on 33 speed going very very slow and what happens is now your mind is following your mind starts spinning around all the negative things in your life all the things that are wrong but if you snap up right now instead of sitting there like that stand up and if you're out there right now listen to us in the radio stand up and if you're in your ropers don't worry about nobody's paying attention to you they're so interested in themselves they're not going to notice what you're doing so stand up now lift your head up and look towards the ceiling not below how you may need to look into this feeling but look up feel confident put your shoulders back put your jaws if you're confident stand there the way you are confident athletes do this all the time they get themselves engaged before you'll see a tennis player bouncing the ball certainly every time before a serve or a basketball player every time football player they get themselves set every time you're an athlete in your own life be your athlete be your own athlete be your own advocate look up put your shoulders back feel confident breathe deeper when you start speaking to somebody start gesturing a little bit with your hands show a little bit of passion if you show the physical passion the mental passion will then come through if the mental passion comes through that will then give you the persistence and the tenacity to be able to follow through in your life without giving up and when you start feeling yourself getting a little bit down don't pay attention to thinking positive pay attention to get your physiology up and engaged first then start thinking positive stories because they'll they'll stick at that point fabulous fantastic well i was doing it hope you were as we were listening i was doing it right that way if you want i was i was doing that and i got to tell you i had to stop in the middle there because my man kini was really riding on me i had to sort of had to remove the dental frost from my butt but otherwise it was really good and and you're absolutely right john i mean of course you're absolutely right the psychology follows the physiology and positive thinking isn't worth it isn't worth the hole in the donut if there isn't something else engaged and and so i agree with everything is john same and i would add to that because as you stand up stand up straight do it right now let's do it stand up make sure you feel planted nice and strong on the floor and make sure that you breathe in nice and deep with your chest open and your back home just like jomas describing lifting your head up lifting your eyes up to the corner of where the corners of the room meet at the top by the ceiling get your eyes up there get your breath nice and deep taking in and start noticing see i'm noticing i'm speaking a little bit faster speak a little faster to yourself inside your head you can use your positive thinking at this point if you want but tell yourself you know what i'm glad i'm alive i'm even if you feel like crappola i'm glad i'm alive i'm glad i'm alive and you know why because i don't know what's coming next and it's going to be something marvelous something wonderful is about to happen and as you do that i want you to do something i want you to remember a time when you felt really powerful and you know even when we're feeling really crappy there's something we can remember where we felt really powerful where you felt really connected it was a moment it was something where you had that sense of being alive a moment of feeling dynamically connected and you just tap into that remember that and keep your eyes up there keep your chest breathing and remember exactly how you were standing as you were feeling that dynamic powerful moment remember it remember everything you could see start noticing little things that you could see notice the picture tune into the picture get clear on that picture notice all the sounds around you and start focusing in on bring as many of your senses in notice how your body feels how your body felt back then in that moment of power get really connected to it and as you get really connected to it do something like slap your hand or or bang your hand on your thigh or something just to let yourself know yeah i'm right here and get really really connected because your physiology will guide your psychology by doing that and this isn't rara this isn't positive thinking this is training your brain you see interestingly when you look up and you do all that and you remember that powerful moment in your life your brain does not know the difference between when it's real and when it's imagined using all of your five senses there is no difference to your brain it fires the same neurochemicals out and so if you thought really great at that moment you actually set emotional same neurochemicals this is what john's trying to teach you here this is what you've got to put in action but don't write notes on it get up and do it feel dynamically alive put it in life this is the stuff that john coaches you're in this is what he does with the people he works with it's one of the first things he does to get them going now of course there's much more to his coaching than that but that's one of the pieces is you've got to engage the physiology i tell you that you touched on one thing it was critical which was the was the uh... that you clap your hands and do some kind of a panel move absolutely once you do that and i learned this years ago and i know you have as well sometimes if you're in an office in bliamon you know it's not practical to stand up and clap your hands but what i did is i conditioned myself to get into that positive state by clapping my hands work work doing actually use to throw my hands over my head like i was winning a race i'd engage my physiology but i i practiced that at home until i got to the point where i could just touch my two fingers together in my office and that wouldn't that would engage my physiology in such a way i felt as powerful as i did when i was throwing my hands above my head just a matter of practicing it and when you do that when you have those power moves like i used to prospect i used to make 300 phone calls a night when i was doing real steam i was doing real estate sales and i would prospect and nobody loves the prospect but i would think about right before i got on the phone i would think about just like you were saying i would think about a positive experience i had i had plenty of people that i had prospected to dispel their house and they turned into personal friends so i focused on that think about that for a minute or so through a pound we'll pick the phone up and boom before i knew i'd made 300 phone calls and i had a great time yeah great stuff john and this is really good stuff i hope you're taking notes on this because this is very valuable now we're going to go take a break and we'll come back we'll have time if there's somebody wants to call in if you want to call in you want to get some advice from john some direction from john or from me and we we can help you in any way we're happy to do that and maybe you're just sitting there taking all the notes and going goodness this is a fantastic show and it is of course uh you can do that but we only take a break right now and we'll be back in just a moment don't listen to this unless you want more money people have all kinds of ridiculous ideas about what it takes to achieve fast amounts of welcome success welcome back this is dove baron your host here at the accidental guru radio show and i'm here with my guest john raulley the author of climb your ladder to success without running out of gas and john has been really giving us some powerful great stuff around how your physiology changes your psychology and we've given you some great exercises and things to work along with of course in the last few minutes that we've got left in the last section of the show you can call in eight seven seven two three zero three zero six two however uh let's go on because john let let's let's go to another area let's go to you know we talked about how important it is to have the physiology change the psychology what do you think is the big it let's go to the the problem ends i think what do you think is the one thing that really gets in people's way that stops them from having the kind of success and what is the one thing that that people get stuck with that you're really good at helping them get out of fear so they can get to that fear you most people are just afraid and and and it manifests itself in different ways in different people you know some people get afraid they do you know they get negative about stuff other people they they um they hide in what's comfortable to them whether it's their job or you know going home and watching tv whatever else it is they were fear and and fear always lead to inaction not always what it when it when it when fear is a negative thing at least inaction one of the things that i had is a young person growing up was you know as an athlete and whether it be on the track or in a gym on the track it is quote hitting the wall when you fail you hit the wall yeah and success is always on the other side of the wall and in life success is on always on the other side of the wall not going to the gym i feel these guys in there there and the gym they're pushing for failure because they know if they fail then the next time they get stronger and then muscles are going to grow but these same people you meet them out in the business world and they're cowering at the thought of failure so overcoming failure and realizing that in order to be successful you have to go through failure if you realize that and you really realize that then that really makes your embrace failure and if failure isn't quite scary anymore yeah that's a really good point you know um and actually i've not put it that way myself before and i think you put it really well because um as as probably uh our listeners gathered you and i both have a background in bodybuilding and when you're lifting weights in the gym and i know that you deal listener and probably have been to the gym and lifted weights and you've even heard people talk about it which is you train until failure you you lift the weight you push the weight until you can't do anymore there's this point of failure and we're actually we work to a point of failure it's important to us to get to that failure point because that's the point where there is the breakthrough the next place you're going to go to it is like you did more you're going to you're going to push even harder next time and so we're always stretching that that position of failure so where was you know when you first start lifting weights maybe you just started with the gym and you're lifting a 10 pound weight it feels like you know failure is you know that four reps of that and then you know you've been doing it for two years and you don't even warm up with 10 pounds you're doing much more than that and so that failure has been pushing you into a deeper level of success and i think that's a really great insight john because what you were saying there about fear is is really important go ahead well one thing i always tell my coaching client is that your attitude is your spotter and the gym you have somebody working out with you that they call spotter to get stuck they help you your attitude is your spotter in real life keep your attitude up that's your spotter that's going to catch you when you're getting ready to fail and then the next day you go to work of the next day you go attack that challenge again then you're going to be that much further along and that's what you're actually teaching the coaching and i know you do too as well dov you know when i'm a psychiatrist what we are is where we're um trick cyclists yeah we're spotters basically one more rep showing people how to get to the next level and helping them pursue their dream not all of you that's another thing i think a lot of people i know we're running shoe on plant a lot of people are so spoken in their lives because they spent their whole lives pursuing somebody else's dream because they were good math they were told they should be coming on the accountant whether they like science they should be a dentist then you talk to them 30 years later and they hate having their hands in somebody's mouth but they don't know what else to them right you know john when you started out you said you were an athlete at school and uh you did track and you did weights right yeah okay um and you were dealing with these uh the the Nazi party nuns and so did you think back then or were you told back then did you think back then that your career must have to be athletic no i was actually told i was told that i shouldn't even go to high school but i wasn't i wasn't intellectually gifted enough to go to high school that i was about borderline retarded but i want to tell you and you know me well i have i have some challenge i'm definitely borderline or something but the turning point in my life and i want to tell a story quick turning point in my life came i went to attract me to watch some friends of my and run it was an eighth grade and the eighth grade year i'm there with a lacrosse stick tank top arm wearing tight jeans with my with my work boots on track coach mr. Sweeney comes up to me he goes john i want you to run a quarter mile i said i don't have anything to run it because i want you to run it anyway i think he was doing this because he knew that i needed to get unstuck right so if he finally convinces me i did it for him not for me i didn't want to do it i stand up there is you know ten or twelve guys in the starting line i guess i look at mr. Sweetness what do i do and he points across the track it was an old dirt track and it was a sewer cap on the other side of the track because when you get to that sewer cap take off that was the halfway mark so i thought it was like a traitors you know we had gone to the trotter races when i was a kid a friend of ours family owned traitors you know how they run behind the pace car and then the gate opens up about halfway around well i thought that sort of was i thought we were pacing ourselves till we hit the soo cap and that's where the gate opened up i thought that's where the race began so when i start we get about 10-15 years into the race i'm bored i'm in the back i stopped for a second so everybody could pass me and i ran a quilt to the first guy i'm running with him and i'm like well this is pretty cool i said you know when we get to the sewer cap the race begins i'm talking a mile a minute don't come really excited he's like he's going crazy we get to the sewer cap i take off i break the long island record for the catholic schools for the for the quote a mile that day and my coach goes what happened because you just took off and i saw him that he told me to go over there when the race began i took look because no race began when the gun went off because i don't mean i can imagine how good you would have been if you would have took off was you ran second if you would have ran the first half of the race but when i went back to school my grades went up when i went back to school next year i didn't get great grades but i got good grades and i got into you know most of the colleges i applied to um i didn't apply to Harvard again but most of the actually every Apollo college i applied to like i um i got into i even got into West Point and wow the point was that was a that was a your family connection to help there and the fact that i was a good runner i wish you i don't run it so it wasn't all academic but now it was like a cb student in high school not no great shape school didn't really interest me but the thing was was when i realized i was good in one thing i realized that maybe that maybe that i did have some hope in my life and i wasn't a depressed kid you know i was a regular active kid but i didn't give a whole lot of thought to other things all of a sudden i started focusing on goal setting in ninth grade and i want to go to the 1980 olympics and then in 1976 i did go to the olympics the city 76 olympics and got to run on the track because my track coach was an olympic coach but the turning point for me was finding out that maybe i maybe i had some value and that came in the form of running on a dirt track with what was on fantastic you know i think what what you just said was really interesting you talked about that you were labeled as borderline retarded you know i guess last week was kathy buckley and by the way if you didn't catch last week show you can go hear the replay of it at radio dove.com but kathy also was labeled as retarded and she was deaf and now she's america's leading hearing impaired comedian and i find it fascinating how we got these bloody labels and we think that that's who we are and and and many people and you and i you know i both noticed john we meet people who are 40 50 30 80 years old who still carrying around some dumb label that some crazy bugger gave them when they were a kid and it's not who they are you know there's a great story of um there's a book and it's called love is letting go of fear it's an old book it's from the uh very early eighties was written by a guy called jerel jampolsky and uh jerry wrote this book and he was on it well what happened was john rivers was on the tonight show with johnnie karson and he said you know you you seem really happy john and she said yeah i just read i read this book and it's really changed my life and he said what is it and she said showed him the book and it was jerry jampolsky's book love is letting go of fear so as you can imagine the book went insanely you know sold like crazy because of that well the following week they had jerry jampolsky on there and uh johnnie said to him what did you know did you did you have dreams of being a great author when you were a kid and jerry jampolsky was howling laughing and he goes i wrote an essay at school and handed it in he goes and i had a very nice teacher was you know he's a nice man he was kind and all rest of it and he said but my writing was so bad he just he the teacher just looked at him and said well doesn't matter what you do as long as you don't become a writer and here he was i mean this book this book was in the top uh one hundred for like 10 years incredible and that's great because you know it's the same thing as you know if you they labeled you as borderline retarded um you know today you you might have been labeled as add as this hyperactive kid or something you know and here you are a best-selling author john is not just an author he's a best-selling author he's you know he's a correspondent on fox news he's on martha stewart which is the radio station it's uh um satellite radio is that correct john satellite radio but i'm also have my own page on her website all right he is he's on her website i mean this guy knows everybody he's personal friends with people like luford no and you know he he can get on the phone with these people and here's a guy who got the labels you know who got all those labels and then had a car crash and got mangled um then worked as a janitor how easy would it have been for this guy to quit i mean you know you can imagine it would be easy for john to quit but he didn't quit and that's why he's here with you today with us sharing about keeping going you know and you've noticed that this is pretty much a big theme with our show is to talk about keeping going when they when they start hammering at you you've got something to give and john could not have possibly known that back in school when the nun was beaten on him that he had that possibility but he had all kinds of great things that if he to believe those stupid labels we wouldn't have had the gift of having him on this program we wouldn't have the gift of reading his books or being coached by him to higher and higher levels of success so i really appreciate that john well proud imagine if we if the teachers today and parents and everybody in our society started speaking life into our young people yeah start changing the labels giving them good labels i've got my grandchildren here with me right now and every time i see them i tell them how beautiful law and how smart they are because i want to i want to impart those labels into them and i think i will be completely different people can achieve so much more than they'll ever give themselves credit for and they need to change their own you know their own view of themselves they're never going to change the world until they change their own view of themselves you got it well john i'm really grateful for you having been on the show with us today i'm certain that our listener can't wait to have private coaching with you would you please tell our
