Star Wars: The Acolyte has new characters and a different time period than the Skywalker saga. But is it any good?

TV Talk: Star Wars: The Acolyte
(upbeat music) - Hey guys, welcome to another episode of Movies in the Meal podcast where we talk about movies and other things while we eat. I'm your co-host Ben, and in this TV talk episode, I'm gonna give you my quick review of the Acolyte, the latest Star Wars Disney Plus show that just wrapped up its eight episode run on July 17th, 2024. I'm gonna do a just quick overview because a lot of what I really wanna talk about is probably in spoilers, but if you're just interested to see if this show is good or not, I would put it in the good category. You know, Star Wars TV, much like its MCU counterparts, has really been hit or miss. You've had some really high highs, like for me personally, like the first two seasons of the Mandalorian and Andor, and they've also had a lot of so-so to at least in my opinion, bad Star Wars TV shows, like the Mandalorian season three, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and the Book of Boba Fett. Again, without spoiling too much, I would say the action, especially the lightsaber fights, are probably the best I've seen in the Star Wars TV series or movie, maybe since the prequel trilogy. Also, I would say, because it's said 100 years before the Skywalker saga, there aren't a lot of strings that you have to be, like, penned in by, so Obi-Wan Kenobi show. There are not a lot of stakes there because we know it's a prequel, and obviously he's gotta live through Star Wars and New Hope, so there's not a lot you can do, but for this one, it was actually shocking. We have some good characters that were introduced and then shockingly killed off. There's some good performances there. Again, I won't spoil too much. I would go check it out. Again, it's kind of flawed, but I found more good in it than bad. All right, if you made this far and you're so interested in the spoilers, it was pretty shocking that some of the characters, especially people that you know and are known quantities, like Carrie Anne Moss and Daphne Keene, were suddenly killed off. I thought Lee John Jay, who plays Master Soul and one of the main characters in this TV series, which again, I'm not going to go in the plot because just watch it. He's kind of not a good Jedi. I would say that he's a skilled warrior, but he's not very good at following the Jedi ethos, and that kind of gets him in trouble. However, if you are into any kind of Star Wars media or been keeping an eye out on things, even if you haven't seen the show, I think the major consensus is that many Jacinto really just kind of blew up and is the real star of this show. There's one episode where he basically just cooks and everyone is kind of in awe of him. And for that, I would recommend you watch this show, for him alone. But again, the action's great. There's some plot twists, not everything has been resolved in this last episode. So unless there is some incredible backlash and hate, expect to see season two to resolve some of these dangling plot threats. All right, let me wrap this up.
