TV Talk: Keith's Top 9 TV Show of 2024 (So Far)
[music] Hi folks, Keith here with the TV episode of Movies and a Meal. Today I'm taking a look at my nine favorite shows of 2004 so far. Why only nine? Because I just couldn't bring myself to include the maddening, third season of The Bear. So here goes one from nine to one. First step at number nine is Mr. and Mrs. Smith. And right off, show you just how strong you are this has been already for TV. A seriously smart and sexy update on the equally fun movie, this one thrives on the perfect chemistry of stars Maya, Earth, Kin, and Donald Glover. And even with this up in the air ending, I'd be perfectly happy with this being a one-season show only. Next up is X-Men 97. The beauty of this show is that even if you had a little connection to the 90s animated series, and I had none, you can still thoroughly enjoy it. The story lines are very much adult with juicy love triangles and more, and it's all just a blast to watch. Next up is Gentlemen in Moscow. This is based on one of my favorite novels by Amber Toals. And for my money, you couldn't have asked for more from this limited series. starring you, McGregor, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead at his romantic core, it spins a tale of a Russian aristocrat confined to live out his life in one hotel into a world of full of wonder. And next up is Under the Bridge. True crime is exactly my jam, especially when it comes to TV. And how can you go wrong by casting Lee Gladstone and Riley Keel? Well thankfully you can't. And this true saga of Mean Girls Gone Way Wrong is riveting from start to finish. Next up is the Brother's Son. This series stars Michelle Yeo as the matriarch of a Taiwanese crime family who fights with their soldier son to protect their turf as her exile to Los Angeles. This isn't perfect, but it still combines all kinds of threads I love, being a comedy with real comic-quiff feel, a serious karate chops, and also a moving family saga all wrapped up in one. And let's see, I believe we're on to the top four. Number four is Three Body Problem. Serious sci-fi is a rare to even die and breed now, but it rarely gets better than this series from Netflix. Nominally, an alien invasion series that becomes so much more as it ties together how a faithful decision in 1960 China echoes across space and time to a group of scientists in the present. What best struck me about Three Body Problem is it's humanity, so here's hoping I can hope for a season two. And number three is Hex. After an agonizing two-year wait for fans, Hex finally returned to Maxis May for its third and best season yet. Hex is really driven by the verbal sparring of Jean Smart and Hannah Unbender, two seriously funny people whose codependent relationship is at times as hard to watch as it is thoroughly entertaining. This time out, Deborah strives to finally attain her goal of becoming a late-night TV host, and you certainly won't hear from me how that turns out. And number two is We Are Lady Parts. On many true and great things you can say about this series from Need a Man's Or is it's like nothing else she'll find on TV now. This peacock series about an all-female, all-muslim punk band in Britain delves deeper into its characters in season two, but it's just as much fun. I seriously doubt that it'll be a third season, but watch the first dude for sure, and also check out Man's Or sinceational for like, polite society also on peacock. And now, at number one, and this was a no-brainer for me, it's Ripley. I was excited from the second I heard about this limited series for several reasons. First up, I love the Ripley movies based on the works of Patricia Heisman. The even better is that it stars Andrew Scott, aka The Hot Priest from Fleabag, as the ultimate con man Ripley. You're so chilling, you can't take your eyes off him, and it certainly helps that this series from Steven Zallion is filmed throughout Italy in beautiful black and white. To you, you really isn't getting much better. So that's it for this week. As always, you can reach us at newsandmealoge@gmail.com at newsandmealonx/Twitter and give us a listen on Apple Podcast.
