All right, let's go All right, all right, the big news is Damn course goes to Nashville. I couldn't believe that he had good year. He had a lot of you got a lot of nerves Yeah, I don't understand. You know free agency. That was a big thing July 1st Canada Day and free agency. Okay for people like me Tim. What does it define what that means? my free free agency is They can go anywhere they want their contract is up with the team that they were playing with right and now Anyone can pick them up and pay them whatever they want and that's right bites and all that right What if what if nobody picks them up then what happens to the guy they're out of a job? They're out of a job kid. Do they ever go back to the their old team and they do they do they do and they get Obviously then they would get a cut in salary, right? Because yeah, yeah, it's back when you when you played there was no such thing as free agency Like the Bruins old owns you till they didn't want to own you anymore. There was no time where your contract ran out So that that was the whole thing love when you would sign a contract with say dad sign it with the Bruins Actually in the American oculate we had to sign every year. Yeah, there was that's right There was there was no two or three-year contract You were free agent, but if the Bruins didn't want you anymore, what would happen? They created a Springfield. Oh, yeah, they would just release your the Bruins They must have already been mad at me and Floyd Smith I'm at 22 years old. They let us go to Springfield They were mad at you because you broke your shoulder playing baseball They told you not to play baseball. They told me like I was too much guy if they didn't want you They would just release you right. Yeah, and then you would you'd be floating around without a contract I have a letter at home I was digging through a lot of the stuff I have and it had at 60 I figured I did the math you were 16 years old And it was a letter About you from the Boston Bruins tying you up to sign your card at 16 years old you were signed up with So is that what they called the sea car if you sign a sea contract that means they owned you forever And that's what the letter was enough. They wanted you a sea contract means That's what Bobby your had so when you were in Rochester and in those like you had to negotiate your contract Every year I remember punch him like I went in to see punch him like and he said we're offering you the same contract I said okay, is this don't you want to argue? Why do you want to give me more money? He says no, I said well, then what's the sense of argue? It's like a money plate on skit. Yeah, you should have had mom go in there and talk to him I should have your mother go in there. Yeah, like Gordy how Yeah, Gordy how oh Gordy how Gordy how Until Bobby Bond got ahold of him and you know that hurt Bobby Bond Well, he but what happened was Bobby Bond said a lot of the players were mad at Gordy How yeah, because it's how could we pay you how could we pay you and we pay Gordy? How this because he didn't have his salary wasn't as high as it should have been right and then the owners would use that They'd go in and say well, how can I pay you this when Gordy house making this making that and and Bobby Bond? And he made money. Yeah, Bobby Bond sat him down and said you're a real idiot and And excuse on the grapevine show Gordy how told this and he says well, why would you say that? He says you're holding us all back. He says you got to go out and get the money you're worth because he says we can't he goes We can't get your you know We can't get the money that we deserve because you're getting such a little contract. So then he had his wife go in there There's wife went in there. Oh boy. It was Colleen house. That's right. Yeah, and she was kind of ran his empire, right? Yeah, she ran a you know ran all his business stuff memorabilia Marking on all that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so the whole thing that I'll get into some of things But you're right. I just couldn't get over that the Tampa Bay Let Stephen Stamclos. Yeah, and he had a good year 40-some goals. Yeah, and Like the only funny thing about that was I said, you know Nashville picked him up gave him some money and all that and then Stamclos kind of went on and said, you know, he thought he was gonna retire a Tampa Bay Lightning and all that and I thought that's not if I was the Nashville bag. Oh wait a minute You know, I'm paying you big bucks. You're saying how you're sadly the Tampa. Yeah, yeah Well, we'll see how old the year he has but they did they did really well though Nash Nashville because they got that march you so from they did they did pretty good from Vegas who was a consmith winner and And You know what it almost is like those Cindy. It's like The players seem to hold the power now like math like Marner holds all the cards with the Leafs, right? Right if he's gonna get traded I'm gonna get traded thing and it seems like the teams now are getting a little bit more ruthless Tampa Bay signed Jake canceled seven years seven million a year No nine million nine men nine million a year So they would give it to him, but not to Stamclos and he had more Stamplos had more goals than him last year Something funny with that. There's something going on that we don't know but that my I guess he's over 30 Yeah, but he's yeah a lot of injuries. So when you say more ruthless Tim, how would you? Well, I just think that the players hold the power so now the teams are saying a free agency No, we're just not signing you. We're not trading you and we're not signing you a good luck Like and Marcheso said the same thing with Vegas that he was a con smith winner and he says Vegas didn't even offer him a contract So, you know what maybe it's that we Learning back to the the owners. Yes, that's right But they're making pretty good though Boston got tougher with Zanderov was six years 30 million contract Lindrum got seven years 56 million Harry must just go nuts when he sees imaginary. He said today. Who's mr. Cheep. Yeah And he was cheap believe me as a door off 30 million dollar contract Well dad the one thing too is the Bruins got a lot bigger. Yeah, six Zanderov six foot six Zanderov The alcohol and what I want to call a Lindrum is six foot one max Jones six foot three Riley Tuffney I thought I said I think so tough six foot six boy. It's gonna be tough going there and yeah Well, so I think what happened was the everybody's seen you got to be big and tough and mean in the playoffs So the little guys are having to tell you better put up a lot of points if you're a little guy Least went out and signed to Chris Tana. We saw him when we were 15 years old Yeah, he played for Toronto Red Wings. I believe in the GTHL and I got I got an admit and never thought he'd be a big And it you know he thought okay, he's got a shot making the NHL But because he was just a stay-at-home Defenseman moved the puck never really rushed with it now. He's worked. I don't know he signed in, you know So in you always said that a if you're if you got a big kid Just having to stay at home defensemen cuz once they hit about 25 or 30 they're worth their weight in gold Yeah, you also signed Lars who won with the Panthers this year and won the cup Yeah, and then max city or none other big defenseman. Yeah max signs Max sign 15 million contract and send to you you like him you like you like Max Hey, well, I like Max some good friends with his mom and Dell and him played when they were and I said the wrong thing He must like him. Yeah, I think the Leafs must like him Guess that's what you said I don't understand the one thing I don't understand is that it traded away Jacob Chickering Ottawa. I don't get that I don't like it they're going for the future. He's only about 25 years old Yeah a good defenseman put points up had family in Ottawa wanted to play in Ottawa and you know what? I don't think stam could stales like them I just get that feeling right from day one that they traded for him and then the Two months later. They're talking about trading them again, and then Ottawa got Omark from Boston. So hopefully their goal-tending was situational straight note Ottawa seems to be like the goal He's go there to die and then line us all man. We'll see we'll see how he does you and I were talking data like Ottawa Montreal Maybe Detroit, you know, they're not gonna finish ahead of Boston. They're not gonna finish ahead of Toronto They're not gonna finish ahead of Tampa, and they're not gonna head of Florida. It's a tough division It's a tough division like Ottawa. They can have a great season this year and still miss the playoffs So that's why I think they need to go the NHL needs to do one through it one through 16 I think one two three sixteen is the way it should be the best play the worst right travel and everything like that Yeah, but they travel like they take a charter Okay, it's not like you know you and I go into the airport where you got to line up and so it doesn't so is it? That it's too stressful on the players or it's a money thing for the owners I think it's a bit of a money thing travel. It's the money thing But it's it's not stressful on the player Connect connect sign chick de Broth to a seven year thirty eight million dollar contract. Oh boy Pretty good flames got Kevin ball. So I am playing when you were 15 for the Marley's the Marley's Yeah, I remember he was when we told that story before He just stood at center ace and this little guy come run up the middle with his head down And Kevin ball got caught flat footage. So he just stood there the guy ran right into him and Kevin ball He was over six foot when he was 15 and the referee gave him game is caught up for hit to the head Like I ran into him. I said if it was a fire plug you would have run ready to the fire but I better use you yelled at the ref Yeah, the first the only time I yell at the ref I say what is become a girl supposed to do is one of my supposed to do grapes Yeah, well the kid got hurt. He was laying there. Yeah, I was an Irish guy. He got up He was okay. Okay, you and I got to ask you Tim you and dad always say they're all you know You can't understand a trade why they did it and the whole deal and and you always said oh, there's got to be another story there Did you ever get rid of a player because you know there was some about him? You didn't like him. No one can figure out. She's why did Don get rid of him. So what's your Irish guy? Oh, yeah, he was an Irish guy and he had an Irish name. He said I remember you said he was gonna get paymont Paymont. He's gonna get paymont. He was gonna get a wolf paymont. Well paymont. Oh, you must have been a tough guy You know, he said he was gonna get him. He's gonna get him because he's because nobody fool around with no Nobody fool around with wealth paymont because you're asking for trouble if you fool around with him I kept putting him on against them and he did nothing he did nothing against them and so after the pray he was having a shower after and he said the Grapes. I know you don't like beards. I'll shave my beard off. I says leave your beard on And off he went and off you went That is Cindy. I got a trivia Question for you in the past 70 years only three players Have led the NHL and scoring and had over a hundred penalty minutes. I I got I got two in I would have never guessed the third one. I got to two and but I got the one that you got So the first one is of course Bobby or Bobby or Bobby or so he was the first defenseman To lead and first and only defense been to lead the NHL scoring and then twice and twice and had a hundred penalty minutes both times As he was tough. I we've seen him in a couple fights boy. Holy smokes. He could really throw So my next one is and the next one I got lemue. You got mario lemue. I never would have guessed mario lemue Like his first shift in the act like it was was his first or second shift He was in the Boston Gardens and he got into a fight. Yeah You don't think of him as a tough guy mario lemue. No, no, and you guys still got a hundred thing and then the last one is I would have never guessed this one stand mikita And I'll tell you a story about stand mikita him and and and Bobby or got new and awful stick fight Yeah, it was a stick fight It was a real stick fight like a real swinging the sticks after the one of the one of the very Boston reporters come up to me So he asked me the question what you think of Bobby or and and mikita have a little stick fight And I said, you know somebody's going to send that mikita back to checkers albakki and in a pine box Holy dope and and yes, so it was headlagged cherry. I'm going to send mikita back to Like it was just like a nice in a pine box Campbell was not happy. Oh, Claire's Campbell is do you realize if he gets hurt in any game and against Boston that you'll be up for Oh, like these I I didn't mean it for that didn't you have to go like it? Was there a lawsuit or something like that? It was a lawsuit and And harry harry sent him to call me in before the general manager called me and before he said no look Be serious about this thing this thing could really blow up into something there the prosecutor or whatever he was said that you said you sent him back to Checkers albakki and the coffin. I said I didn't say that and they were Hi, I got you Got you you didn't say you flipped it over and and it said I said I sent him back to Checkers albakki in a pine box always harry madder with that one. Okay, so that we got a question from Twitter, I guess you call it x no scenario. Whatever. I say so it's from 99 forever So he must be a Gretzky fan. Hey grapes. Love the podcast Do you think ovi will break the great one's lifetime goal scoring record this coming season? Oh, and good 40. I think you have 41 to go. Yeah, he's got 41 to go He won't break it this year, but he'll hang on And he'll break it the following year because he wants to be the leading goal score Very really does he get injured a like yeah, he plays a tough game too, and he plays a tough game And he just he's just like a tank doesn't that doesn't seem to get injured And well, he's one of those guys that you're running to you and you'll get the elbow first then the stick he is a tough guy Okay, so we got another one. So cine this one's for you Okay, because you when watching the hockey games, you're constantly talking about this This one's from kreg copper six seven four nine from youtube He says hello from tie one. Hey one mad to day one Great show as always a query for me. Well a statement then a question I've thought for a while now that modern gold tending style which has evolved into a butterfly style into what they're doing now Which is basically playing the entire game on their knees simply blocking the goal and sliding from left to right I call it lazy gold tending It seems that the teams find the tallest goalie put the largest equipment allowed on them And then basically make them into a square piece of plywood block in the goal Everyone shoots upstairs and they're always way way more goals I think the tenders should try to get back on their feet and play more athletic style grant fewer style I think the goal should be made six feet Higher to get the goal tenders back on their feet six inches higher It's getting tiring to see goalies getting beat on their shoulders game after game. So what are your thoughts? Well, well ask you Sydney because that's your favorite No, I just can't get over it And you said you said I've been saying this for a couple years And you say don't worry Cindy the players are going to start to know to shoot high all the time So every time we're watching a game and the puckles over the goalie shoulder What do I always say? Just think if he was standing up and playing the angles that goal wouldn't have happened But you know you'll never change them. Well, it's the coaches, isn't it? And it's the goalie coaches, isn't it? You know who picked that up first of all it was McDavid You remember he shot one from a corner to hit when he went off a guy's mask anything the goalies do It'll take the players a while to figure it out Yeah And the goalies pull off the mat to pull off the post a little bit now And McDavid realized that a couple of years ago and he banked it off the goalies heading in or they even aim for his back They even aim for his back. Yeah, but well Tim They do that lacrosse goal and there's nothing you can do about it They're good. They're down there and they're not going to get up. You know, you're right, Cindy It's the goal-tenning coaches now. So once they'll see okay There's a lot of pucks going over the goalie shoulder then the goalie coaches and the The coaches might say stand up more remember why I had the ace dogs. I had a goal-tenner. He was six Well, he was sick. He was six six. He was he was big He was he was and I wanted him to play the the style that they're playing now Like just spread well even back then the couldn't was bigger. Remember Garst Snow? Two by four I wanted him to get a two by four and And he went to hockey school and he said no and the guy said no because he wants to be as athletic He was athletic all right. Yeah, and you remember his father His father was a businessman. Yeah, it was we were we weren't at a game in the the kid the kid struggled and and So we went to junior B We went to watch him at junior B And he I think the score ended up like nine two or something like that and the father was mad Yeah, he said you've ruined my son. I ruined a son I didn't want to say anything. So yeah, this so this was the goal like this is why parents have to be careful So the kid was six foot six Really wasn't that good an athlete and really wasn't that good a skater So back then, you know, you you called up and we said we're gonna spare no expense We're gonna get the biggest goal training equipment And so this father listened to this guy that never played goal Like if think he played junior B goalie and said no, he wants to learn and his athleticism So dad said I want him to be like Garst Snow I want him to come out cut down the angles Just worry about the first shot and don't worry about the rebound and the guy this junior B goalie coach was arguing with dad he goes I want him to do a smaller equipment and play farther back in his net So you want smaller equipment and play farther back in his net instead of getting six foot six Big goalie equipment and come out and cut down the angle and the guy said yeah, the father listened to him Of course because he's paying him money, right? He's paying him money and the kid the kid never developed then the father ended up becoming a goalie coach Remember Mary Got me after a game. Yeah up in Brampton or Bram O'Lee Yeah, and we gave it right back to him You're saying you're telling me your kid was ready there. He led in first four goals and four shots Well, you know what it's like dog training dad. Anyone could be a goalie coach and anyone could be a dog trainer You don't want to listen to me But you know the other thing bad about The one thing that we were seeing with goalies and this is you know, I'm we're kind of Dumping on a lot of guys that are making a living is that they have these Little small pads where the goalies are. Yeah, and they never work on their angles Absolutely a delt what remember we used it with del We spent a small fortune on goalie coaches for del and it was these tiny tiny little pads And he never figured out the angles because he was never on the big ice other than a game. I moved down to Don Simmons Oh, that was funny. Yeah, remember that. I remember oh my goodness. That was funny And Don Simmons says no, you guys you will do it. This will do it I was caught in the middle. I didn't want to get hurt. Well, his goal equipment was always too big Yeah, it was always too big and it wasn't for us trying to save money So he'd grow into it. It was that the the goalie coaches and who he were buying the goalie All wanted big goalie equipment because that must have been the era and well, he couldn't move Yeah, big it was big in the sense of that it was like he couldn't move he couldn't move right It would protect him but from a bobby hall shot. Yeah, yeah, bobby hall Yeah, I mean, but I mean he couldn't move it was too big It wasn't broken in and you can't say anything because you go against the goalie coaches and you go against the guy That's the expert working in the sports store. So what do you do? Well, yeah, you think your husband wouldn't listen to me You weren't a goalie I knew but I knew both gold hunters Because you had gilly and chevers and the one and then you had a hardy. So The best of the worst So dad, well, I asked you a I'm gonna ask you a basketball question. Oh, okay. So we're gonna get Hey, I know a lot about basketball. Yeah, LeBron James Drafted his kid and it was him second round Who really wasn't supposed to shouldn't have gone second rounds. So what would you what do you and he just signed a contract? $7 million contract. No, I would never This is a tough question because it sounds Ridiculous, but if you if you get you say if you sign your son Or somebody like that and and you give him a nice contract and everything it says it shows that you're being partial to him Yeah, I just don't think as a father Like you're you're setting your kid up for such ridicule. Don't you think sini? Well, didn't the hunter brothers have something like that the hunter brothers in london Did they sign their kid or said no way they were gonna They they did but they drafted him in a realistic thing right like they drafted him In the mid thing in the mid brown because nobody else was gonna do yeah and and like that But but even then though junior hockey's a little bit different then pro then in an la You know, I just think that I just if I was the mom I wouldn't be happy. Oh, the mother would say no way The too much pressure. Well, there's a lot of pressure on kid right off the bat man and and reporters And they're kind reporters And they'll be just looking for Because I remember your favorite saying is reporters either at your feet or at your throat And so they've been at the feet of LeBron James for a long time So it's time for to go to his throat Yeah, time to go to his throat and this this is a perfect opportunity Well, tell me I think we have to go now and I'm gonna say to Lou *Music*
