(upbeat music) - Hello and welcome to More Than Headlines, your weekly anime news podcast powered by audio technica made by Australians and four global citizens. I'm your extremely humblest friend of white, aka the salt and pepper senpai, and join me in the studio at my trusted co-host, rival, the Hinata to my Kageyama. Courtney Smith, how the bloody hell are ya? - I'm good, how are you? - I'm good, I'm good. I am back with more Australianism, so I get used to it. It is, yeah, episode nine of the More Than Headlines podcast. We are becoming a well-oiled machine here. We are rockin' these out every week. There's steady growth on the episode listens and view counts, so thank you so much everybody for checkin' it out. It is a good time to be alive here. You've been having a good weekend? - I have, I am going to go to a K-pop concert tonight, so I'm very, very excited for that. - Hell, yeah, it's been pretty good. I am aging not so gracefully, but it was my birthday. So listeners and viewers, if you wanna give me a nice present, you can rate if you subscribe this podcast and follow me on the socials and follow Courtney on the socials. But Courtney, what do you think? Shall we jump into some news? - Let's read the news. - Oh yeah. - You like the news? (air whooshing) - Ah, my older insides are struggling to handle that bass drop now. Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer and new key art for the Terminator Zero anime. The anime is set to premiere globally on August the 29th and is produced and animated by production IG and Skydance Animation. - The series will be an eight episode anime that focuses on other characters within the Terminator universe, so no Sarah Connor here. - I am so, so excited for this, Courtney. I grew up on a steady diet of Coca-Cola, Doritos, and Terminator 1 and 2 throughout my years in the 90s. Terminator 2 is one of my favorite films of all time. It is fantastic. It's peak science fiction. It's perfect. James Cameron was on one when he made these sort of two films. And it's funny because my mom used to get shitty at me because we'd go to the video store on a Friday or get to pick a movie each and do take out night and stuff. And like every week just about for the whole year straight in like 1993, I was getting Terminator every week. And my mom was like, "Bread it. You can't do this. You're wasting money. You've watched this thing a hundred times." And rah, rah, rah. But I persisted and creamy mummy, AKA Lauren, AKA, the best mummy was very, very frustrated. But this looks great. The trailer looks really good. It captures the heart and soul. I think of the world and that sort of dystopian post-apocalyptic Terminator vibe. And you combine that with Timothy Oliphone and you've got yourself a party that I will be there like early for once. I never go to a party early. I'm always fashionably late. I will be there early when the decorations are still getting put up. Like I am so keen for Terminator Zero. And yeah, it looks good. - So are you the kind of guy that like knows all the timelines and stuff? - For the most part, like it does get murky. And some of the films they've done have been a little subpar, to say the least. I enjoyed the most recent sort of go-around of it where they're trying to readjust the timelines. We actually saw Sarah Conner come back and Arnie come back and John Conner, young John Conner cameo with some weird de-aging because Edward Furlong looks like a melted shoe these days. So they made him look good and youthful. But yeah, I know a bit about it. I'm very familiar with Terminator One and Two, but a little less familiar with the rest because the first two are the classics. The classics. - So I was a bit young, I think, for the Terminator movies. I might have seen them all. I'm not like a huge fan. Like, I don't know everything about it. But I think this could be really fun. Netflix has been doing really, really well with their anime adaptations lately as well. So I'll definitely check it out. Maybe, I don't know if this is like a weird opinion, but I prefer the newer Terminator films to the older ones. - It's not the most correct opinion, but like, I'm not gonna yuck anybody's yums. Like you said, you probably entered this world not at ground zero like I did and didn't sort of experience the greatness of the film from the '80s and then the '90s, but you know what, you do you. And irrespective of that opinion being right or wrong, I feel that this anime is gonna be great. Yeah, like you said, Netflix has been on one and I'm loving these adaptations and we've got more Netflix sort of anime synology happening later in this episode too. - Yes, but before we get into that, let's talk about Rama one half again. So we talked about the remake announcement a few episodes ago, but we have some more news already, which is fantastic. We got a trailer, a key visual and a premiere date of October 5th. So that's August, September. - Three months? - That's two, yeah, three, three, two months. - Well, July to August, August to September, September. Let's say two and three quarters. - Two and a bit months, yeah. So two and a bit months where you get the premiere of the Rama one half remake. It's also worth noting that the series is planned to be streamed as a Netflix exclusive. And I'm kind of curious about that because obviously it's different studios doing the Ursa Yatsura and Rama one half, but Ursa Yatsura is on hi-dive. So we'll see. - Yeah, maybe we're gonna see a bit of an influx of the hi-dive portfolio, maybe bleed internet flicks and get a little bit more mainstream attention with some exciting fall. But yeah, not only that, the voice cast was also announced with Kapay Yamaguchi, Megumi, Haya Shabara and Noriko Hideaka returning to their respective roles as male Rama Sautomie, female Rama and Akane Tendo, along with other voice actors from the original anime making their return as well. So I'm loving that they are getting this nostalgic sort of throughput happening where they're bringing in original voice cast to re-essent the throne and take on those mantles again. So I love that sort of nostalgic touchstone that we're gonna get with this remake. What, three decades later, which is awesome. - I know it's so exciting. And 'cause this one is being done by Mappa. So they're doing that animation for Rama one half. Even though, I will say it looks quite similar to Ursa Yatsura, the remake, but that was done by David Productions, Studio that did Joders was our adventure. So I'm curious to see the differences and similarities with it being from the same mangaka and all. - I had to double take on this, to be honest Courtney, 'cause yeah, I thought that David were helming this as well because the character models and the art style and the color palette, it felt like this was just ripped from the same Ursa Yatsura universe. Like, and I don't wanna discredit Rama one half at all by that, but it just felt like because I'm so familiar with Ursa the last couple of years where Rama has been out of my periphery, it just felt like, is this a spin off? And it looks like the same, you know, various talented animators are behind this, but I'm excited. I love Mappa. I don't really love some of their human rights issues and things like that. But this looks good. I'm still very new to the run my world, but this trailer looks really fun. I love the character models. Like I said, the animation looks really whimsical and quirky and enjoyable. And yeah, the fact that we don't have to wait too long, like we said earlier when we crunch some hard maths there that is a little under three months away that it's gonna be coming. And the fact that it's gonna be hit Netflix too is exciting 'cause it means yeah, more people are gonna get access to it. - Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't seen any of the original series or read the manga. So I'll have, I hope, a similar experience with Uru Sayatara where I kind of go into a blind with just knowledge of the premise and I fall in love with it. - Lumb is, where's my finger? Just here for the video viewers. She's right there hanging out, pride of place right there on the center of the shelf. But let's move into the third and final news headline. And fans of my dear friend, Nokotan, can finally watch the full Koshitan dance scene on YouTube where it's been posted in its full and fantastic glory. Whether you wanna sing or dance along, you finally can, but that is not all. - So not only was this full dance scene posted to YouTube, it also reached a million views under 12 hours of posting. People love the dear anime and I am people. I am also people and Nokotan is life and holy shit, this is one of the best new anime of 2024. Like, yes, we are only two episodes in and yeah, it could fall flat on its beautiful dear face, but two episodes in is fantastic. Episode two dropped earlier this week and I was again chuckling throughout the entirety of the runtime, like it's unhinged, it's absurd, it's stupid. And yes, the Koshitan dance is the cherry on top of this very insane yet delicious Sunday. And man, I am just eating it up and anyone that is a fan of anime, I will just preach the good word of my dear friend Nokotan to them. I've gotten so many people in on this anime, the last couple of weeks that I feel very proud that we are sort of like card carrying members of the Nokotan fan club because it's great and the jingle and the dance and everything is just the absolute best. - Yeah, so I, unsurprisingly, I'm on Japanese TikTok a little bit, I get quite a few Japanese TikToks through my feed and so many of them right now, I adjust people doing the dance and singing the song and like videos of dear, like one of the dear parks in Nara, like they're like suddenly they're posting videos every day and it's just shikanokonokonokonokonokonok. I'm like, guys, please. - It is the earworm of 2024. Like the shikanokonoko just runs through my head 24/7 and like we need to get like a, what would Nokotan shoot sort of out there, I think? Like what would Nokotan do? Like that is the one because it is great and it's wholesome and it's just a fantastical thing of this summer release and yeah, one of the best of 2024, like it's so good. I cannot wait to see where episode three goes because episode two and the whole game show spin that it just went on. I'm like, where is it going next? Why are we so hyper fixated on this character, not wearing a bra and what is coming? I cannot wait. - I feel like the merch has like really good potential from like from the show. Like you could do just some really wacky merch and I'm living for that. - Like we were talking a few weeks ago regarding crazy collabs like Nokotan can lean into that as well. So get ready. We're going to get the butcher's paper out and the markers and start strategizing on the next great collab with Nokotan. So strap in for that. - Otherwise though, let's move on to on the horizon. We have our rapid fine news and major releases coming out presented by a talkie books, the only anime books with scale figures, voting and a cheer. - Yes, so much etchi. The emails I get, they do not hold anything back. Like it is just anime titties right in your face the second you open that email. And it's a journey, but yeah, a Taku box, I love ya. - I started following them on Instagram and I just, I can't look at their stories when I'm in public because it's, there's a lot of boob. And while I for one appreciate a lot of boob, just not in public. So be careful where you look at their Instagram. - Exactly, yeah, 'cause you might get a few very concerned side eyes on the trainer, on the bus or in the work meeting or something like that. But yeah, Taku box, love you. Thanks for coming on board. I will quickly just rattle off these rapid fire headlines. Then maybe we can throw to the major releases and then we can talk then about what we've been watching this week or at least notable standouts because I know we watch a lot. So my hero academia, your next, the film has an official confirmed runtime of one hour and 50 minutes. So we're getting nearly two hours worth of my hero greatness and his dropping on August the 2nd in cinemas worldwide. So you'd have to wait long at all, like two weeks and it's on the big stream. - Yeah, that's actually also really long for an anime film. Like I, it's very rare to get a film more than 90 minutes but yeah, they're really pushing that two hour mark which is interesting. Oh yeah, oh yeah. And Suki Fujimoto's look back movie has officially crossed the one billion yen price point at the box office and that translates to six million US dollars. Yeah, Fujimoto, very talented. Obviously, Chainsaw Man is an absolute monster but also Fire Punch if you've checked that out too is another beast entirely. So I don't know much about look back but very similar art style. If you've seen anything from the Chainsaw Man world it looks just like it's sort of parked off the side of that world while Denji's doing crazy stuff. These kids are doing their own thing. So yeah, I'm keen to check out look back when it becomes a bubble here now you. - Yeah. All I know about look back is that Hideo Kojima keeps posting about it on Twitter, like non-stop. - It's all about it too. - Yeah, he's posted about it like six times and everyone's like, bro, are you good? Like, we knew he was a little crazy guy but all he does is talk about look back now. - Well, he goes through phases. Like before that it was Mad Max, it was Fury Osa and stuff. And yeah, now he's on look back. Who knows where he's gonna go next but yeah, bless that old man. We had an indirect butt kiss at RTX way back in the day where I used the toilet and then he used it straight after me. So he would have felt my warmth maybe half a decade or so ago. So I hope you enjoyed that Hideo. - Wait, so you, it was an indirect butt kiss but for him? - Yes, yeah. - Right. - Damn, you missed out on the Kojima butt kiss. - I know, I know, but knowing that I put my cheeks on his, like I was the instigator, like it shows that, you know, I was the forward one there. So yeah, indirect butt kisses. I don't know if they're a thing but they certainly are now. - Oh God. And then Kami can't communicate. The manga is entering its final arc from July 24th. I'm so excited. - I am too because we haven't even got a goddamn third season of the anime yet. Like it is well reviewed and the view counts on Netflix have been big. Like it is one of the strongest performers yet we have nothing on Kami. And the fact that the manga is getting ready to close its doors, I think it's getting towards 400 chapters, which is insane to think about. I'm going to go have to plunge into the manga because I want to know what happens. I want to know if she gets her 100 friends because I'm rooting for you, Kami. And it's just some of the sweetest, cutest, purest anime, not only on Netflix but on the planet. - I'm with like a really, really nice art style too. I could look at that art style all day. - Yeah, big, big fan. - Let's have a look at the new releases for this week. These are the big, big releases. So July 20, which was yesterday, my hero academia began season seven, episode 149 titled Light Fades to Rain. So this season had a break, right? - Yeah, yeah, split into two cores. The second core started from last week again and it's rockin' and rolling. I watched this episode this morning and holy shit, like I'm avoiding spoiling anything but like my jaw was on the floor when the credits rolled on this. Like this was big time and I'm curious which direction they go or if, you know, what's happened there is, is it? 'Cause I was like, whoa, like it was a big emotional punch for me. - Hey, I'm so excited. So Dan and I just finished catching up on Spy Family and next we're gonna catch up with my hero and I'm so excited. - We, yeah, like I'm avoiding Twitter spoilers and it's tricky, that's all I'll say. But today, the new episode of One Piece comes out and I'm gonna give everyone three minutes, three minutes, three seconds of silence to have a quick guess at what number we're at. It's season 14, episode 1,113. And I know we just count this number up every week but it's still just insane to me that it's gone so long. - It blows my mind and the fact that this season is reviewing or key episodes in this season are reviewing so well. Like the previous episode is now the number one rated anime episode of 2024. Like I can't poo poo on it. I can't dismiss it, I haven't watched it. And you know, like maybe in a decade and a half when I finally get there, I'll go, you know what? They were right with that rating way back in 2024 but yeah, I think two of the three highest rated individual anime episodes of the year so far belong to episodes from season 14 to One Piece. They're doing something right. Like, Oda knows what's up. - That was, I mean, it's just so big, right? Like so many people watch One Piece. Like even me, I considered starting it and then I heard they were doing the Netflix remake of the anime. So I was like, I'll wait and see 'cause you know, I wanna see how they change it, right? How much filler they get rid of or whatever they do. - I hope they get rid of a lot of filler, Courtney. Hope they get rid of a lot. But yeah, I'm coming back in. When, yeah, this sort of reboot happens, I will give it a spin because it feels like it's gonna be a lot more tighter post and a lot more respectful of viewers time, I hope. - Excellent. - Well, I wanna ask you, Courtney, what have you been watching this week? What is some notable titles that you wanna bring to the table that you wanna inform and educate our fantastic listeners and viewers on that you've been peeking this past seven days? - So this week has been less of a seasonal week for me. This has been more of a catch-up week. The only seasonal thing I watched was Nare Nare, chief of you, episode two. This show is not good. I will just start with that. But I enjoy a show that just does its thing, right? - I don't like the art style. The story isn't very interesting, but you know, it's there. And it's content for me to consume while I'm playing League of Legends. - Is this, in my way off, Courtney, is this the one where it's about the cheerleader that's paralyzed in the wheelchair? Is that the one I'm thinking of? Or am I way off base here? - You're, well, she's not paralyzing the wheelchair. She's just not allowed to do cheer for a little bit. - Yeah, it's very like low stakes, kind of like she'll heal and go back to jail again, it's fine. But otherwise, like I mentioned before, I also finished up Spy Family season two. Finally, so cute, so wholesome. Just Lloyd and Bond going on the little walk was amazing. On you're just doing her thing. And you're ascending, like, I felt season two, it started really shaky and weak to me, but it really picked up and finished super strong. And they showcased your a lot in this season and just seeing how much of a powerful badass woman she is. And also like a caring mother. And it really redeemed itself for me 'cause after the highs of season one, I jumped into the season two and I'm like, "Oh, I don't really vibe in this as much." But then it built steadily and ended really strong. - Yeah, I think as well, it was really good to see, this is gonna sound weird, it was really good to see more violence. - A lot of death. - Yeah, like it was interesting and I think they balanced it really well. Like we go from having this like really like a violent and gritty, like huge fight scene with your, to, you know, back to their regular lives and it's really nice. And I think the way that the story arcs like that is really good, like it becomes gripping, but then when you have those peaceful moments, it's such a relief. You're like, "Oh, this is so nice." And then like it slowly builds up. And I think they have a really good pattern there. - They really do. And we've got the film dropping in a couple of months time and then obviously a season three on the way. So lady of spy family to come. - The one other thing I've been catching up on is Michal Kutense, Jobless Reincarnation. Do you watch that? - I have finished season two and I like like a bit of behind the curtain stuff. In Courtney's notes, she wrote, "Rudius is so dumb." And I agree 100 million trillion billion percent. Like I'm not going to spoil anything, but the decision this stupid boy makes really, really upsets and frustrates me because it was a perfect story up until that moment. And I want to punch something right now. I think it about it. - Okay. So I'm going to heads up for Michal Kutense spoilers for the last like five, well last five episodes except the very last two, which I haven't seen yet. So I'm up to basically where he has saved his mum and his mum wakes up, but rewind, rewind. So this season he is like, "Oh my God, Sophie and I are in love "and I bought a house so I can live with her "and we're married. "They get married." And I'm like, "This, wow." Maybe I actually like this show because my whole experience with this show is just me going, "Rudius, oh, that's nice. "Rudius, oh, that's that." Like literally just over and over. So he gets married to Sophie and I'm like, "Oh, thank God he's just going to stop being a pervert. "This is so good." And then the guy in his brain is like, "Oh, you should actually bang one of the cat "or dog siblings." And I'm like, "Stop." Just, no, ignoring, ignoring this for now. So then the thing that shocks me is Sophie gets pregnant, right? And she's pregnant and it's great and it's so nice. And Rudy's like, "Oh my God, I'm going to be a dad." And I'm like, "Question or what, sure?" They're married, it's fine. And he then decides to go and save his mum because his little sister gets angry that he doesn't want to go because his wife is pregnant. I'm like, "This is just days of our lives at this point." Like, Rudy is, stay at home, don't go. And then he goes anyway. And then he goes and he fights a hydra and his dad dies and he's like, "Oh God." And then he gets home and he just looks exactly like his dad. Like he's looking at his mum and she's like about to wake up from her crystal coma. And he looks exactly like his dad. I'm like, "Please don't do this." 'Cause Paul is such a piece of shit. Yes, anyway, that's where I'm up to. And I have, I'm so mad at this stupid boy. Sorry. Like, get ready to get mad up because I've finished this season. Once you finish these next two episodes, you message me immediately because I need to vent to more people about this stupid kid and his decisions and how this season plays out. And yeah, it's silky. Like, I'd never leave her side for nothing. Like, I don't care if the world's ending outside that old once was haunted mansion. Like, I'm in there forever. I'm, you know, she's wifed up. I'm husbanded up forever. I'm happy. She's the sweetest thing. Life is good. I still don't understand why he's just accepted one of his younger sisters to just be the servant and clean and cook and wear the made-out fit. But you know, that's a whole 'nother thing to unpack. The season overall, I still really enjoyed it, but I think it really fell on its face in the final few episodes. And just the decisions that this kid made because it was so frustrating to me. He is 16. I literally, I was sitting there watching, I think it was like the last episode, or the episode before this one. And I was like, "How old is Rudy's again?" 'Cause time flows weirdly in this anime. So I was like, "Oh, maybe he's like 20 or something." 'Cause he's married. I'm like 20, you know, minimum. But no, he turns around and he's like, "Yeah, I'm 16." And I'm like, "Go, go back to school. "Go study, don't, oh, he makes me so mad." It does make me so mad. But something that makes me so happy. I checked out the third episode of Alia Sometimes Hide So Feelings in Russian. Loving this continued build. Loving this, will they, won't they? Loving this slow peelback of their origin stories and how they both know Russian and where that sort of came from. So it's been a really nice, easy, enjoyable, romantic slice of life. And yeah, I am just fully engrossed in this. It is still one of the stars of this season. So far, and yeah, I'm 100% in on that. A couple other ones, I'll just sort of really quickly rapid fire, Ashinoko season two, episode three titled Rewriting. Really strong again. I'm loving just this change of focus with this season where we're getting more screen time and focus on the ancillary characters and the side characters. We're sort of working out where they all slot in two. And in this one, it focused heavily on Abiko, who's the manga car, who's helmed Tokyo Blade, the worldwide phenomenon that they're trying to convert into a stage play. So seeing her story and how she came to be in the pressures of this world, like it was really informative and insightful for me as well, seeing the realism that's conveyed to the work of creating manga and the stresses behind all that. So I liked that there was a bit of that outside of the whole broader murder mystery that's playing out in the background of Ashinoko. Have you watched the latest episode yet or no? So I haven't seen it yet. I normally, I watch it before the podcast, but obviously Rudeus is ruining my life right now. But I do want to say, if you have not watched this show, I highly recommend checking it out right now because Uniqlo is about to launch or have launched their collaboration with Ashinoko. So you can get like cool t-shirts and they're so cute. And there's one with the three idols on it that I really, really want to get. Feel free to send that my way. Anyway, yes. Honestly, seriously check it out. I think the world building is really, really clever. And each episode is so, it adds so much in such little time, like every single episode, I'm always astounded. I'm so excited to watch episode three. - Yeah, it's so good. And it's just gone from strength to strength and I can't wait to see this story built out further. Another one, I checked out the first two episodes of the elusive samurai. Really, really, really took me while surprised. Like, I thought they were gone one way and I'm like, this is fun, this is whimsical. I'm having a chuckle, this is adorable. And then when jokes on you sucker, hyper violence, decapitations, murder, gruesome fights, all this stuff. And I'm like, whoa, is this the same world and the same anime I'm watching? So it goes places and it's really enjoyable and the art style, holy guacamole, like clover works, were on one here because it's jumping and merging so many different unique animation styles and art styles throughout these episodes. It is stunning to watch well-paced and it's got a bit of heart in amongst these just sprinklings of violence that they throw in. Like, it doesn't hold back and it's gonna be one of the surprise hits of the year. Another one, I checked out the first episode of 2.5 dimensional seduction. The way I'd sort of classify that is a slightly hornier, my dress up darling. Take that as you will. I've also been continuing through the journey of spice and wolf and I just love, love, love, love, love the relationship between holo and Lawrence. It is so beautiful to see and it is just of that free reinvane, it's like that quieter moments mean and hit the biggest in comparison to the big action set pieces and just constant drama. Like it's really relaxed and calming and just a journey. It's a walking simulator anime and I'm all for it. And the last one I wanted to highlight because this one again, I thought it was gonna be an absolute nothing burger of an anime but I checked out V-Tuber Legends. Watch the first two episodes. Complete, complete surprise for me. It is fantastic. It is one of my favorite new anime of this season and our Yuki, the V-Tuber that I guess has the curtain removed from behind her fantastic, perfect, pure persona as a V-Tuber and it finds out she's just a booze hag that's horny and thirsting over everybody all the time is phenomenal and it is super, super funny and it is right up there with knock a ton as the two big hits of this summer or the two big surprises for me of summer and it is just an absolute hoot. Have you checked out V-Tuber Legends at all? Or you need to, Courtney, if you haven't because it is so funny and she's just a hot mess and I love her. This one is on my list and it has been since before the season started and I think 'cause it only started like not last week, the week before I think. It started like a week later than all the other stuff. So I haven't gone to it just yet but I am so excited for this show. Everyone has been making fun of me for saying I'm gonna watch the V-Tuber anyway but now that you are saying that it's good I can rub it back in their faces. - We didn't set that up by the fact you used the term rub, Courtney. She talks about rubbing one out and you segued that in perfectly. So kudos to you for that greatness. - You're so welcome. I also wanna quickly talk about Spice and Wolf again 'cause I'm also watching this, I am behind as always but Hollo's voice actress, Ami Kostimizu, her voice, I am obsessed. I don't know if it's just her as Hollo specifically that she's like putting on a specific voice but I really love her voice. It's so like creamy. She also plays Elder in Otaku Elf who is one of my favorite characters of all of anime. So yeah, her voice, her voice alone. I suggest watching Spice and Wolf 4. - And just the writing and just the dialogue. It's like poetry, the way these people talk. Like it is so different to most other anime you'll be watching because it is sort of more classical, ye oldie type of phrasing and they're just really clever word play and it's just like butter on these characters tongue so the way they speak. So I am all for it and I'm happy you're still vibing with it. - I'm obsessed. - It's so good. But yeah, add Vtuber legend to your watch list. Immediately caught in Smith because it is so goddamn good. It's just trashy in all the right ways. Like we've got two fantastic just what the hell anime dropping this season with noctotan and Vtuber.
