- You're listening to a one FM podcast. - Now, we're just going to turn our attention to all things GV masters, and we've got herney in the studio live for us. Now, we might actually get you to whack on one of the headsets that's got a microphone on the... I'll tell you what, one bloke who has thrown things into absolute disarray in these studios, is a nay, a bloke by the name of Jason Asplan because he's responsible for these bloody headsets, and I'll tell you what, they are ridiculous, these things. What are they doing in a... I have no idea. These are footy broadcast headsets, and they're sitting in here in a radio street. Only Jason could think of something so silly. - Ear warmers. - Ear warmers. - Well, now it makes, I take that all back. That's exactly what they are good for, and I'll tell you what, I have got very hot ears at the moment, and that's probably because people are talking about me and how silly I am, and they wouldn't be far off the mark. Big day, today, the Buck McPhee game. All roads lead to the Marupna wreck. - They do, and yeah, looking at the inclement weather out there today, it's going to be a tough gig for all of us, but we're hoping to bring the trophy home, the Memorial Cup. - Memorial Cup? - Yeah, which we play for tonight, so it will be great. - Yes, now, tell us a little bit about the history of it. Well, let's just, first of all, when did Masters footy start in the Golden Valley? Because I believe that you've been there almost since day dot, if that's correct. - I mean, it's a day dot, yeah, so... - Have been since, that's not a rumour. - That is a fact. - That is not a rumour, so yes. Buck was the first approach to coach the side back in 2015 with the club coming in in 2016. So we've been around since 2016. We certainly have a lot of players come and go. There's, yeah, so it's been absolutely fantastic. So Buck coached the side for three years. Yeah, and the motto for the Giants is footy for fun, and we certainly do play for fun. There are, I suppose there are some areas there where we do step over that white line, we sort of try and control our passion, but, yeah, it's a great concept. - And what about Echuca? How are they going this year? And what are your expectations tonight? Like, will the sides match up fairly evenly? Because, I mean, sometimes you get great games in AFL Masters footy, and then sometimes you can get, you know, the weekend sort of hackers like us, some old legends, and then you've got blokes that look like they've just, you know, stepped out of the AFL, sort of running around all oiled up and, you know, looking like they've just popped out of the gym or, you know, Harley Reid jumping out of a sauna or something like that, but, what do you, what do you expect them to, do you reckon they'll be in - Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, it is last night. - Tip top shape tonight. - They will be in tip top shape, but the thing is they, with the weather, sort of brings it down to level now. So, whoever can play in these sort of conditions. And I think we'll actually have their measure tonight. - And who are you expecting a real big one? I mean, other than yourself, of course, because I reckon you'll, you'll be bearing the square. - Skill, skills, skill, skill, skill. - You might be in danger of catching a cold tonight, apparently, because of the amount of time that you spend around the goal face I've heard. - I actually do, and I've got the, the mantra of, I've actually got a pocket named after me at Koillard, in the pursuit of lack of skill. So, since 2016, playing in the forward pocket I've been able to kick one goal. - Okay. - Yeah, so I had to let the kids know that. - Just the one. - So it's not the history books. So it's pretty, pretty sad when you get a first game of coming out there and boot three goals, and just looks at me in regards to that. So, yeah, nothing. Tadia, Coach, will be playing a solid game in the center. Dusty will be fantastic in the, in the forward line alongside myself. Yeah, so, yeah, Mattie Walker is another, a good guy. So, yeah, so certainly the small guys. Jason Schurlock. - Yes, Schurlock. - Yeah, and Barge. - Yes, yes. - So here in Stuy, small on ballers. There, they'll certainly be in and under in today's condition. So, we've checked out the ground already. We've done a bit of a reconnaissance there, Wednesday night. Looking pretty muddy in the center. - I remember Jason Schurlock back in his playing days, and you talk about white line fever. This was a bloke, and he was an amazing competitor by the way, really, really awesome. Almost like a Tony Libertore. A style sort of footballer back in the day and just straight at the footy. No regard for his own, but just real tough sort of a player. So, g'day if you are listening in, Schurlock. But I tell you what, Jeezy took it seriously. - Schurlock, a little bit. - Just a little bit. - A little bit of training serious. - What is that? What's that white line of training on a Wednesday evening? - Oh, give it a rest, Schurlock. Hang him up, mate. Come on, it's enough, he's enough. Okay, the competitive juices just, I don't know, buy a video game or a PlayStation or something like your body's cooked, mate. Ever written, no, no, no, no. What an absolute legend, seriously. And then there'll be a few of those types of individuals running around for a chukka, as well as a former-- - For a chukka. - For a chukka, solid side. - Quality players have seen your footy at some stage across the journey. - Just hoping some of those guys that are over there playing senior football today don't drop back into the Masters, run with things and play a second game. - Well, I think there was a bloke, I actually spoke about it in the program earlier on today, Kane Morris, who's approaching Masters age. Geez, I'll tell you what, he would not be far off getting, guess what, GVL, don't know if you know this, couple of weeks ago, 200 centimetres tall, it was absolutely pouring down rain. He's kicked 10. - Really? - Imagine, where would he go tonight? - Oh, she's plus 10, easy. Unbelievable. - Against our old bodies, but yeah. - But it should be a really good night across there. - Yeah, it'd be great night. - And they're certainly passionate here, and the best thing about the tonight's game is that Buck's been a couple of years playing for a chukka, and then actually wanted to bring that concept across to Shebron. So, yeah, it'd be good. And we've actually got some guys too that haven't pulled the boots on for a couple of years, but actually want to play in the Memorial Cup, so they're actually more than welcome to come and play today. Yeah, that'd be great. And then we've got a supper happening afterwards, as well as that we can just turn around. And basically, I suppose, stand there and talk about how good we were in the game tonight, and obviously with a little bit of consumption of alcohol, that might go a little bit better. - And in terms of the real sort of concept, the camaraderie of it, the mental health component, the friendship gained out of it, the guidance, the mates, the new people, the feeling connected to something, the community around the GV giants, all of these positive things that are part of being involved. Essentially, it's not about winning or losing, it's not about the competitive juice as well, somewhat a little bit, especially to Jason Sherlock, but what it's really all about is men's mental health. - We've had partners, wives, girlfriends come to the club and say, "Thanks very much for allowing my partner "to join into the Masters game." He's played a lot of foot in his time, he hasn't played for a long time. Now he's back in there, having a bit of locker room, fun, a bit of camaraderie, like you said, mateship, comes home, hobbles in the door, but with a smile on his face. So it's actually a great outlet for people like that, like you just said, men's health. We've got a couple of professionals in regards to the men's health profession, so they've actually been really, really helpful as well, and we actually do have some different men's health nights, so for those guys, and we've always got a shoulder to lean on, so it's been great with that. And that's where Buck actually had a real strength in regards to his personality, been able to nurture certain people through aspects of their life as well, so. - Well, we look tonight at really deep diving into those types of stories, and really finding out a little bit more as we cover tonight, it'll be a bit of fun after the Marutna v Echuca serious stuff, the GoTaf JVL, round 14 contest that is in the 2024 premiership season. We'll be followed by this memorial at the Marutna Recreation Reserve, and we're really, really looking forward to having a little bit of fun later on this afternoon slash evening. - That'll be great fun, and certainly those people with visual issues in regards to underlights, hopefully that actually at Echuca will like that, and we'll be fine, but like Buck's motto is, never get your ambitions mixed up with your abilities, so quite a few of us do that. (laughing) - Gee, I wondered where you were going with this, and absolute stitch up with the light. I tell you, if they can't see, they're in all sorts of trouble, because Marutna have actually, I think they're called 500 Lux, or some Lux is sort of the measurement where they measure the brightness of the lights, and Marutna have got some of the best in the area, so they can't see the footy under those lights tonight. They are in a big bit of Barney rubble. - No excuses. No excuses. It'll all happen today on one of them live and local. - If you have enjoyed the show, then please let us know what you think at our socials. One of them, Super Saturday Sport on Facebook and Twitter, and tune in from 8 a.m. next week to find out more. 'Til next week, goodbye.
