Hi and welcome to Sport and Road, the weekly motorsport show with thanks central tire service. This is a part of the Super Saturday Sports Show that you can listen to and keep up to date with all things happening on the courses both locally and around the globe. This show is on a weekly basis on a Saturday throughout the year and is hosted by John Hainter and Craig Stott. It's on one FM, shipping and radio so let's have a listen to see what's happening in the world of motorsport this week. Good morning folks, Saturday morning sports, continuing here at Live and Local 1 FM. We're certainly missing the stats man but Jade up and James are doing a great job anyway. It's time for Sport and Road, I'm John Hainter and I'm Craig Stott, good morning John, but here's morning. I don't know whether I'm after a month or a month. We're coming or going, I'm not sure. Come on holidays and then I'm called into the peps to do a lunch shift and then I'm called in early nine o'clock to go and do the TAB. I reckon and right through so I've had to disappear. So do you get holiday pay and pay as well? It would be nice. I haven't even ordered anything for lunch. Oh gee, you better get onto that fairly quickly. What's the soup today? You know it's cream, chicken and sweet corn. Oh that'd be nice, they had um uh cauliflower the other day. Interesting, no worries. That's a good week. Been a good week. Yeah, the old cap team has had a little bit of a problem. My mechanic mate Ronnie's looking after that. Thanks Ron. Absolute, great bloke. That's Ronnie Sherwell in Marook. He's um finding out little bits and pieces on the little old capte before us. That's good. We may be lucky and not have to either send it to the wreckers or spend a lot of money and do cam chains. Oh well, we'll see how we go. How's yours week been? I've been not too bad. I've had to go to the Alfred but then they converted that to a phone consultation. Oh yeah, just what you need. And another glasses company didn't send all the specifications down to the Alfred. Oh great. You've had to reorganize all that. Oh great fun. Yeah, I'm not impressed with that but um, tiling on with the bungalow, the benches are in, the stove and kitchen. Everything's now it's time for a splashback and I can finish. Yep, put a gas stove in and you're right. That's that stoves in. Yep, oh good, even better. Yeah, just a gas line and the splashback tiles and we're done. But I can't do much this weekend apart from a bit of work. I've got car racing. Exactly. There's things happening at SMP. I reckon a lot more happening at Eastern Creek. Yeah, I reckon it would be too. Yeah, if not at the same time. I wonder if we have a breakdown at Sydney Motorsport Park or Eastern Creek Central tyres will come out and probably fix it. Yeah, they'll probably go up there for them. No worries at all. Might say a bit of time to get there but they'd be there. No problems at all. Well at least they'll come out and look after your vehicle. Yep. They'll want a tyre anyway. Wonderful, wonderful sponsors. Yeah, gee, they're good. Absolutely. It's right and of course Tim in the office and all the crew there. Absolutely fantastic. But even women in the office come out and help. Yeah, they do. Yeah. They're not frightened of getting their hands dirty. No, exactly. The backup of the crews, the way they look after each other and back each other up is, that's just absolutely amazes me because there's so many job size I've been in. If you did that, they'd be on your bank. "Who do you watch at me for?" No, not these bikes. They look after each other. They back each other up. It's great. I've noticed I've got my accounted versions and they're sending out bits and pieces emails that bulk dealing globes, headlight globes. Oh, right, yeah. Things like that and all. That's a very smart idea. You're not wrong. Yeah. And today's one was wiper inserts. Ah, so you can buy a box of them if necessary. That's right. Yeah. I'm looking at great stuff. And they do fit them so that's most places to do that. They do. That's for sure. Any of those autos spare pass places are right through the place. I'll all do that for you. If you want to globe fit it, they'll do it for you. And a lot of other bits too. They're really good like that. Why does he exactly? Yep. No worries. The best part of that's good your auto care is they also when they check your tires and your spare including the jack and make sure the jack works. Yep, make sure it's all there. Yeah, that's exactly right. Now you were going for four new ones last week. Did you get there? Yeah, four new ones. Yes, they're black and round and kept the car off the ground. That's the important thing. Yep. No worries at all. And in alignment and they did it as we waited. That was very good. I remember one of the librarians at one of the schools went to the auto teacher one day and said, "One of the best tires for me car, Cole." And he said, "Round black once." And you can't argue with facts like that. No, no, it's great. Well, when I was with the ROCV service, they're in the Kerrigan's. Yep. And I've got a flat battery. Hang on. I'll bring the compressor out and blow it up. We've got a flat tire. Oh, running on the bottom. Yeah, precisely. Although the truck has stuck under the bridge. If we lift an air out of the tires, it'll... Oh, but it's stuck at the top, not the bottom. There's no idea. There's a couple of bridges in Melbourne. Yes, there's a few down there, especially down south Melbourne. Yeah. No truck a day, I think. I think so. Yeah, no worries at all. We've got another wonderful sponsor too there in the Shepna Motorcycle Group. They look after all the motorcycling. These ride around a place of really great bunch of people there. Can amp spiders, all of the KTM dirt bike and off-road bike range, the kids' bikes, all the little ones, spare parts, gear. You know, you want to heat the grips on your bike? You got it? Sorry, Greg. We can't get an astro. They don't have any in yet. It's all good things in there. It's started, hasn't it? Yeah, new tires, chains, if you're a changer and bike, they've got all of those sort of things. And over the road at the... What was the HLSL Honda side? It's now, again, Shepna Motorcycle Group. That's the home of Forestroke, the Honda Place. No worries, do you want a Honda Brushcutter or a Honda Webber Snipper? They're all forestrokes. They've got the Honda side by side now. Yeah, they have. And they have the Segway range too. The, yeah, interesting things there. It looks good. But that Honda Place, they also do all the Webber Snippers and lawnmowers. They do, don't they? Yeah. Anything, Honda? Yep. Brushcutters and everything else like that nowadays. Absolutely great stuff. Yeah, fantastic people. Gee, they do a great job in there. Absolutely awesome. So, hey, how about we get into a bit of great sport? I think so, because we've got some motor car racing coming up this weekend. So, yeah, well, it started yesterday. It does, it did. And you've got, on Friday, they had the practice from about 4 o'clock for now. Yeah, practice under lights, yeah. It's quite to the Sydney side, is it? Because it is a day after the Sydney side is really, we've got to travel a long distance again there, but we do that anyway. The best thing about Sydney is the sign heading towards Melbourne. That's the one, this way. No worries. Anyway, let's get into this. This is a little exit, except from a bit on the supercars.com and it was called Craig's Corner. Yes, it is. C.L. exclusive Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney Motorsport. A super night column by Craig Loud. Yeah, and he's just- That's a mouthful, isn't it? That certainly is. Yep. This weekend, we have the first and only night races we have this season, and that always throws up completely new challenges for teams and drivers. It does feel a lot faster at night because you can't gauge depth perception around you clearly like you can during the day. So everything does seem to go past you at a million miles an hour. And then, of course, the things that seem to approach you a lot quicker, like corners, breaking markers, curbs, etc. You have to get used to it as quickly as possible. Yeah, bro, he's telling you one thing, have a beer. Because of that lack of depth, but ultimately, you're travelling at the same speed as you're during the day. It's a mental challenge for drivers to understand, and that's the same at night. Personally, I love night racing. I really enjoy racing underlights because of the other challenges that you don't have during the day. You need confidence and belief that you're able to do the still able to pass into turn two or somewhat down into turn four and the turn eight hairpin. They're great passing opportunity corners. The driver will need to get to the top for the race. You know what, the outside drivers need, bigger owners. Definitely. Tired degradation is going to be quite high at this MP, and we've seen that in the past, but during the night race, that will improve because of the cooler conditions. Night racing is great for spectators too. The big things I'll notice, obviously, the front brake disc glowing and the flame's shooting out of the exhaust. There are elements that you don't see during the day because they're somewhat hidden by the lights here. We're sticking with long races this weekend, which are always great strategy races. The bar is raised in Sydney because of the night conditions. Tired degradation, refueling and the nature of the circuit. Seems really come into their own in the longer races. We saw in Townsville how well Matt Payne and Pennwright Racing made a bold strategy work. It went under the radar because no one has seen super bold recently, so it could set a new tone for the season. By the way, you know how they're doing the pit challenges, side changes of different teams, blanchard racing is in front. Then you've got two brake joints racing. Interesting. Interesting. Interesting. They're quite personal, achieving. Absolutely. Now, if you're going to make a bold strategy work, you need to have the speed to compensate for that extra stop, but you also need to be able to manage traffic and get through traffic fast enough so you're not held up in the shortest stints to capitalise on the benefit of the tyre. Pennwright Racing proved that they can make it work and that they're here to win. It was fascinating to watch given we didn't get the full picture of that race until three-quarter distance. Taking championships or talking championships, there's obviously no doubt Will Brown and Brock Finney will both want to bounce back strongly after Townsville. Generally, when Triple 8 has a bad weekend, they bounce back the following weekend. For Will, after that happened in Townsville he needs to. Scoreboard pressures count for a lot and any ground you can gain right now heading into the Enduros is massive. We are, after all, only two race meetings away from the start of the endurance season, which in itself is a massive part of the whole championships. Simply, in the case of Finney, Payne, Cam Waters and Mossett, if you need to maximise points, you need to do it now. The four drivers in particularly will definitely want to continue that momentum after dominating in Townsville. The Townsville battles between Cam and Chas were amazing to watch. It was as good as it gets. They're both a little bit older and a little bit more mature now. So I think they're a bit smarter in how they attack each other. They know that a street race like Townsville is high risk for any passing opportunity and they thought brought home crucial results. I'm not sure whether they'll be polite this weekend, if they can, into that same. It's an hurry, because Sydney Motorsport Park, there's a lot more run-off and there's areas where you can be a bit more aggressive. We've seen that in the past, even between teammates when Jamie Wink up and Shane Van Geusberger went door-to-door in a few years ago. Yeah, that was interesting too, wasn't it? You know what's strange? That Shane Van Geusberger has won a race last this week and also will power one too, because you don't hear much about it. Will Power's been talking to Wink up about having a go at his class of racing? That's interesting too. All told, the four drivers have got some momentum now and critically, they've got the belief that they have the equipment, they can win races at parody A. Importantly, that's across a number of four teams and not just one four team dominating. There will be confidence in the blue oval ranks, especially going into the Enduros. It's also a big weekend for Locky Dalton, who will make his debut in a tick-ford wildcard Mustang. It's looking good too. One thing about the championship is having young drivers come in and getting an experience of what it takes at this level. We saw that what Cooper Murray did in Darwin and with a big team, Locky is a chance to impress. Motor racing is tough, but it's important to take the opportunity to see what they're made of. From practice, you're talking about qualifying pressure, you're talking about getting a lap time, you're also talking about how to piece together a race. Locky has been a solid in Super 2 and I've no doubt he'll take the chance with both hands. I'm really looking forward to this weekend. We're at the halfway mark of the season and the championship is heating up. Knowing this track, it's set to go to another level in Sydney. We do say thanks to Craig Lowndes for those words. It's absolutely fantastic to be able to bring them back. He really does know what he's talking about, doesn't he? He certainly does. He's been there done that, many times. His son has moved back home with Mum and been doing some modifications to the house though. Oh, right, yeah. It's good. I think we've better stop for a second, have a quick... Very quick sponsor break and we'll come back in a couple of minutes with a little bit of a strategy guide as to what's happening this weekend. But first up, some words from these wonderful people that support us here at Live and Local Family Fam. AJ's motorcycles are now shepherd and motorcycles. These animals are most active during dawn and dusk, so if possible, try to avoid driving at these times. If a collision with wildlife is unavoidable, maintain control of your vehicle and avoid swerving, as this could result in losing control. Apply the brakes firmly and remain in your lane. This message proudly brought to you by RoadSafe Golden Valley. Station sponsor. They're a good sponsor talking about wildlife. I was heading home from the PEPs the other week and turned from KTM to main road, left into Lebewen Road and just up by the Clark's first house. What's that on the road? Three wombats. Good grief. You don't want to go near those things? No, they hit. Absolutely. That'd be different in the strategy guide, wouldn't it? Oh, wouldn't it ever? I've actually probably mentioned it a couple of times we did an early morning ride after Bendigo to join them for their breakfast start with the Ulysses Club years ago and we found a wombat with his feet pointing at the sky. Toasterack. It was asleep, so we rolled him over and stood him on his feet. Very, very dead, but standing now. I reckon it would have frightened a few motorists after that. It would. The things you do now to worry about. Strategy guide. Possible race strategies for Sydney. This is by James Pavy. Thank you, James. Yeah, supercars.com. Once again. We're back in Sydney and underlights and this time we go night racing twice over the same distance, which is good for a change. And just starting to bring distance into it. SMP Sydney motorsport park will hold dual 200k races, which will feature refueling and plenty of strategy opportunities. Sydney's tough on tyres, which becomes an even bigger head scratcher when the sun goes down and the temperatures drop. Supercars.com explains why the key is the strategy for this week's 51 lap 200 kilometer races and the fastest way to finish. What tyres do we have? Dunlop soft tyre compound, which was used at the NTI-DAR-1-500 is back for Sydney. Each car will have 28 soft tyres, seven sets for qualifying and the races. Eight two sets pre-marked event tyres must be handed back after practice. Each car also has 24 wet weather tyres, six sets, an awful lot of tyres. Reckon. I'm interested in this handing tyres back after practice. Pre-event, a pre-marked event tyres must be handed back after practice. That's interesting. The compounds they change. Yeah, exactly. What is the circuit like? Well, drivers know SMP well, but that still doesn't make it easy to set up a car year after year. An anti-clockwise circuit, Sydney has six left and five right corners, with 45% of the circuit spent turning. It's the highest tyre we're rating at the 2024 calendar and 35% of the lap is spent at full throttle. Largely thanks to the MPART to the 3, a 732 metre pit straight. Drivers to 270 Ks on the front straight and are at 205 at the apex of the super pass turn 1. Oh, I don't like that idea. In stark contrast, turn 8 is the slowest corner on at a pedestrian 70 kilometers an hour. To practice in qualifying, Sydney motorsport, let's say Eastern Creek, is used frequently and therefore need to be rubbed in as much as other circuits. Schiller key feature is low tyre grip and high tyre degradation. Given cars are almost always cornering, it's an aero sensitive circuit with an aero stability required at turn 1, 4, 7 and 9. Set up is centered on a on getting great drive through and out of corners and being able to turn and accelerate simultaneously. It's also not the toughest on brakes, but the biggest stops turn two, six and eight medium energy braking zones. Given Sydney is tough on tyres, teams will be keen to get an understanding of the impact of new minimum tyre pressures, lowering tyre pressures affects turn in stability it does, which is crucial in Sydney. The 90 minute practice session will permit teams to vary fuel loads, testing cars over one lap and race runs. For qualifying, like any circuit, clear track is critical. Track condition will also play a big part in the track grip as the grip involves. So getting front tyre and brake temperatures up will be important. The lap time is approximately 90 seconds and in a 15 minute session, two runs are possible. You have to nail the push lap, otherwise you'll waste the tyre. If you get through to the shoot out, drivers must get the front tyres up to temperature, so warm up procedure is key. We saw in Townsville how early some drivers started their laps. However, don't overuse the rear tyre too early in the lap. Some other critical lap and expected strategies. At 51 laps and 200 kilometres, these race will be all-out attacks. Drivers are required to take on 80 litres of fuel in each race. That's approximately 32 seconds of fuel will be split over the stops. It's a long pit exit where drivers are blending into the traffic on the run to turn two. Timing the gaps for pitch stops needs careful management to avoid getting stuck in traffic. Being held up by a car on older tyres will have a major impact on your race. tyre life management will be the talking point, as always, but having good tyre life will allow patient drivers to make places by waiting and gaining, making gains after other stops earlier. Cars can conceivably get home on fuel from lap 12, but the tyre where cancels that out. The longest stint in 2023 was 23 laps, putting the spotlight on lap 28. The even strategy of the two stops, strategy centred on the first stop, four tyres and 40 litres on lap 18. The second stop, for four more tyres on lap 40 litres of fuel, on laps 30 to 35. That sets up a 20 lap sprint to the finish. To get out of traffic and make ground with light fuel and good tyres, drivers can make an early stop around lap 10. Foot four tyres and 20 litres of fuel, saving seven seconds in the pits and making up track position. It does make for a longer second stint and a longer second stop, four tyres and 60 litres. The bold strategy, which was used sparingly in 23, is one super stopper around lap 26 with drivers taking all 80 litres of fuel. Yeah, that's an interesting one, isn't that cool? A bit of a safety car, they come out too. Yeah, exactly. Safety car has appeared in 24 of the 74 races held in Sydney Motorsport Park, 32.4% to be honest. There was one safety car across the two Sydney races last year after a crash for David Reynolds midway through the Saturday race. And the other variable, what about the weather? It'll rain or shine and be all things like that. Yeah, and a win for the fans all days of the event are forecast to be clear. However, wind could play a role on Saturday. It could too. And now from James Pavey. Yeah, Will Brown. Will Brown had a 141 point buffer heading into the Townsville finale, but it all come unstuck. It sure did. Didn't it ever? Will Brown is determined to leave what is determined to leave Townsville in the rearview mirror with a championship leader putting full focus ahead. On the second half of the season, the Triple 8 drive arrives at Sydney with a reduced 78 point lead over teammates Brock Feeney with Chasmore Stutt and Cam Warders 174 and 389 points behind. After a sterling run from 13th to 3rd on Saturday, Brown had a 141 point buffer heading into the Townsville finale. However, he collided with David Reynolds and Imped and limped home in 24th. With Jamie Wink up a label, it's Triple 8's worst day of the year. The short turnaround between Townsville and Sydney has given Brown a little time to dwell on the incident, but the Queenslanders adamant its old news anyway. However, given the big hit in these lead, Brown knows he needs to bounce back at the scene. He was very, very first supercars win. We don't have the best weekend in Townsville, but I haven't let that get me down. I've got full focus ahead of the rest of the championship, he says. I'm really confident heading into Sydney. I've got my first race win there and an extra success there over the years. We've got to bounce back from Townsville. The Townsville crash brought an end to Brown's stunning start of the year with the 87 Camaro on the podium, 12 of the first 13 races. That's not bad. The points later came unstuck in Townsville due to poor lap one pace, leading to grid positions of 13th and 17th. For Brown, the key to Sydney is regaining the consistency enjoyed in the first five rounds, which helped him build his sizeable points lead. It's got pretty high tide degradation, which I think we've been managing very well this year, he added. We have to continue our consistency as that has been the season, the reason for our championship lead. Hopefully this weekend we can bounce back, get some really good results and keep that consistency going. Sydney's action commenced yesterday with the practice sessions. 200k races are going to be held today and tomorrow. Interesting. The current standings before this weekend, what do we got? Wilbrian at first. Yes, he's had three wins and one pole and sits on 1515 points. Two is Brock Feeney. A second place, but he's had five wins and three poles. A lot of four of us. 1437 points. And Chasmost has had one win, had two poles, and 1341. Cam Waters is two wins, four poles and 1,126 points. Next up is Matthew Payne. He's had one win. He's had two poles and 1,065 points. And James Golding, he's only had one pole and he's got 980 points. And Davidson. Yep. He's got 972 and he's got a clean thing for wins and poles. Jack Lebrock has zero wins, he's had one pole, he has 967 points. Percat that's ninth, has had one win, no poles, he's 942. And the two points behind that in tenth place, Thomas Randall and his clean zeros on all of them, 940 points. Now, you've told me before we've had a possible retirement from the game coming up. Yes, James Courtney has announced his retirement. He is finishing up at the end of 2025 with Blanchard Racing. So we got to the end of next year to enjoy his driving. That's it. But that doesn't, he's not ruling out the endurance races. Right. Oh, that's a good one. Come in as a co-driver. That is true. Then, I'm just put two and two and what's your opinion of frosty. I think he's getting a bit long in the tooth. Yeah, same here. He's only up bounced up every now and again. Yep. So we've got to get some young drivers through. Oh, I totally agree. And that's why I bring him up out of the next class down. Super 2, I think it's a great idea. Same with the young fellow we just spoke about before having a go this weekend yet. Yeah. And the other one up at Darwin. Yeah. And also, Garth Tanda is running around Easton Creek in a Porsche this weekend, getting some miles under his belt. Yep. Just to get something in ready for the enduros. Oh, that'll be absolutely great. I believe he's with pen right racing. Which is quite interesting. It certainly is. Yeah. Absolutely. Great stuff. It's four wild cards in a batterish this year. Yep. Yep. We'll have to have a look at that for next week. I reckon we'll talk about a wild card because we're actually going to Tasmania on the, yes. We've got almost a month to worry about that one now because we go to the Ned Wiski Tasmanian super sprint and we're heading south to Simmons Plains on the 16th or 18th of August. So we've got a few weeks to go on that one. Yeah. So that'll be interesting. That's an interesting little racetrack down there. That certainly is. I've done a couple of motorcycle racers as an official down there and it's, yeah, it's an interesting race. Yeah. Tony and I had to take the course car out and go and check for some damage at the hairpin and, oh boy, we got into the gravel trap. Then we were finding bits of cars all over the place in the gravel. Incredible. But what a great place here. Fantastic people down there. So we started with a little B&B sort of thing in Launcest and that was really nice here. So yeah, I'm looking forward to this weekend. It's going to be different. Yeah, definitely. It's definitely not. Seeing the rotors light up and exhaust. Oh yeah. And usually the exhaust-wise, the flames hanging out, they're running the engine a little richer. Yeah, that's right. Yep. And pushes a unburned fuel. You can tell that the status tune of the engine by the color of the flames too. That is correct. Yeah, good blue is nice and clean. If it's a bit yellow, it's a bit rich. Yeah, exactly. That's amazing how they read things like that on the car. It's amazing. It was over 200 sensors on the car. Absolutely unreal. And they're all Motec systems working. Yeah, incredible stuff. You look at the laptops, people wonder about that. They can plug that in and they'll tell them exactly what position anything was on that car. Exactly right. Any spot on the track, meaning the speed they're travelling at. What was your throttle like? Yeah. What was your angle is steering? Exactly. Yep. Tire temperatures. That's all been broadcast into the pits at the same time. It is. From these to the car. That's right. Amazing stuff. And also to the officials too. They have, they have the race control, gets all of that as well. Yep, no worries at all. People might wonder, these couple of cars come in and they've got par firmering on it. Yeah. And that is where the official, the supercar officials will take that car. Yeah. And they will do some measurements either body shape. Yep. Or they can do body shape. Yep. They'll even take the heads off the engine and check. Oh yeah, definitely. Yeah, the size of your bore and the stroke and things like that. Do they check the size of the fuel lines? That's changed. That was years ago. But look, Freddy Gibson did well. Yeah, we're not in America too. Yeah, one of the, one of the books there. His car was actually, was sort of just a little under, well, little under three quarters, the size of the original car, but it all fitted all the things. So yeah, and he had huge fuel lines and yeah, it was a real cheater, but he got through on a lot of things until they woke up. Oh yeah. No worries at all. Anyway, time to go. It's getting close to you. It certainly is. Yeah, we'll go back to the peps. Yep. I'm going to, I'm going to head on and put TV on. And I'm lucky I've got a heap of TVs. I'll put one of the objectives on more than enough down there to. And I reckon the punters at the pub tonight. Yep. We'll have to watch it. Absolutely. Yeah, for sure. I wonder whether I can turn the volume up a bit later, but we'll see. I might sneak it in and we'll be laughing. Yeah, good stuff mate. But everyone have a safe weekend. Absolutely. It does headlights looked at and tires looked at. We'll be back with you next week. With some results and we might even try a bit of formula one.
