come and watch AFL over 35's masters football at its best the GV Giants take on the YouTuber emus in the Buck McPhee Memorial game the emus currently hold the cup can the Giants win it back with thanks to GV Giants major sponsor the pepper mill in you can listen live here on 1 FM or come down and cheer the GV Giants on game kicks off directly after the GVL on Saturday the 20th of July at the Maripna Recreation Reserve one of them sponsor and we've got Jason Asplin in the studios to talk all things GV Giants are called a head-lap big game that was just mentioned on next Saturday night Jason welcome thanks Mark thanks everybody yeah just an interesting sort of couple of weeks for the Giants with the masters carnival happened two Saturdays ago so that was there and we had teams come from all over the state to challenge out for the Vic country title because masters don't play for points it's more about fun and mental health than it is anything else but we've created a carnival that one day a year we do play for sheep stations and in the end it was the South Coast Sharks from down near Geelong that cleaned everybody up so they the results for the day were the craze beat the sorry the South Coast Sharks beat the craze 90 to 0 to start the day so the craze struggled against them the South Coast were in a bit of a league of their own it took a emus went down to Melton 9 to 69 then things got a bit closer in the next few games Vic country rolled the Morrible Crocs 39 to 27 and our own GV Giants 22 went down to Gisborne Bulldogs 30 so we almost got the win there but not quite a little bit away wood kicking and we just didn't quite find our mojo in the wet and Melton then took on the craze as our second round kicked in and it was 55 to 14 and then the South Coast Sharks beat the Giants and the Crocs beat the sorry the South Coast Sharks beat the Bulldogs Crocs beat the Giants and then the last one was the Vic country and got rolled by the emus and in the end it was the grand final South Coast Sharks 60 to Melton 9 in the grand final so it was they were in a league of their own the Sharks it was an interesting thing but the day was amazing yeah I was gonna ask you I believe it was a very successful carnal we booked the first wet decent winter day of the whole year and we obviously booked that six months out because that was when we planned the date for the day we had beautiful sunshine on the Friday and beautiful sunshine on the Saturday and consistent rain all day on on the sorry I ran this on the Sunday we consistent rain all the way through it but it didn't dampen the spirits the we made up a bit of a tent city with gazebos so we had a bit of an area where everybody could sort of be a bit dry down at the Quail oval but around the barbecue area there and in some ways it made the day better the rain because instead of everyone spreading out all over the ground in their own little huddles and things like that everybody was together and it was a really interesting way of having a carnival football and probably the most interesting team of them all was the actual Vic country side itself which was a make-up side so the idea of that one was is that there's 18 teams in the Masters division in the Masters League a big country across the state not all of them were able to come and play in the carnival so we made up a team that allowed people just to drop in you know if there was someone from Ballarat that wanted to play that that they could come across and there was and we filled that team with hey who wants an extra game and bang we'll have the team sheet filled in a few minutes and it was really really good we had a special thanks to Troy Watts who umpire eight of the nine games he trotted around in the rain all day and did a really really good job and Sydney the Bridge was our game coordinator he kept the made sure the game started on time finished on time and then we all headed over to our sponsors the pepper mill afterwards for some presentations and it was Sean Saunders was the from Melton was the MVP of the day and Darren Moorish from the South Coast Sharks was the grand final MVP so it was a really good way of being able to enjoy a day of football without the the pressure of normal everyday football yeah no it sounds like it was a very successful day with a lot of people in attendance to have a look as well yeah I think the numbers would have been between two and three hundred yeah that's right that's really big around like and when you put all that around the quail oval it created a fair bit of noise around games and it was yeah really well when I got back to the pepper mill I was sort of cleaning up a little bit at the at the oval before we went back and got back to pepper mill and walked in and wondered how many you know how many people actually would stay for it the room was full the outside rooms were full as well there was no where people were falling off the rafters it was an interesting bit but it was accountable that showed why Masters football is what it is it's it's great that we've got Saturday football and we've got our normal teams and we've got all the teams that you talk about earlier today and we would get nowhere without those clubs but at some point players make a decision that their bodies may be not taking the banks and bruises the same they're just wanting a bit more fun rather than a bit more serious that's where Masters football kicks in and this carnival was a prime example of how a few hundred guys that skated all across the state could get together and play their football and the and then just and even in amongst playing against each other joined together to play in a big countryside a mix side and that's I did happen to get a win so it was yeah very special so we're hope to do it again next year and well the clubs are pretty keen on that but we're getting some feedback and a few bits and we'll know more about that as time goes on now we're going to be game at next Saturday now there's going to change a venue yes we initially the the bucking free game is always the biggest game of the the calendar for for Giants buck who was one of the main people that helped start the GV Giants but he came from a chukka he like in the he played for the Chukka Emus up there so when we do play we play for buck he he unfortunately passed away and next week we'll have one of the Giants drop on and give a bit more information on on buck story and and what the day means but originally we're going to be at Deakin and with the you guys having your GVL coverage we wanted the best calling team in the league to call the game so it will we thought well let's move the game over to Marutna so we'll be playing over the Marutna Oval after the Cats I believe they played Chukka in a really big game yes it's so if you are there for that game stick around afterwards and and watch the Giants play it would be a good good quality game where we're hoping that we can get the shield back from the cup back from the emus at the moment they've got control of it and we need to work hard to get it back but Giants we're always looking to find more people so this week we're actually going to be training on the Marutna Oval on Wednesday right so if you're an ex giant and you just want to pop down and say hello because you're over that side of town if you're wanting to investigate a bit more about Giants come down training or kickoff just before six o'clock on Wednesday night and you have a talk to the coach and just if you're just an old player come down and say hello because it's not always about being on the field with Masters sometimes it's just about getting down and saying hello to the boys and having a bit of fun so it is a really good atmosphere and for us all to be able to go and train there guess it's a bit like going you know for an AFL team finally get to train on the ground but they they're playing on well we get to go over to Marutna and have some fun on the the great ground there and see what those big lights are like and get a bit used to the ground which will be good and then Saturday it'll be what time the GVL finish 4.35 o'clock yeah around about 4.30 yep so the game will kick off around that 5 o'clock mark on Saturday afternoon it'll be live here on one FM and then we're hoping to have it recorded so it'll get to our Giants Facebook page as a recording and the next day also following after we join or all the coverage together sometimes we've been during this God forbid that we need an ambulance or anything they can set it back a little bit but in saying that that's not normally the case let's hope that there's no injuries in any of the games that's not why we never want to see injuries in any type of ball no it's it's it's not why we play football it's definitely not the bit it's what we were out there to have fun and even it's at normal club level you're still out there to have fun and be competitive but Giants just it's just that little bit more casual which allows for everybody to get involved regardless of experience levels and other than the Wednesday night training at Marutna it'll be back to Quail or on Wednesday night yes normally we're at Quail or at six o'clock on a Wednesday so training kicks off there guys are often there from a bit after five doing some laps and getting warmed up as you do for trainings trying to get the old legs moving a little bit but yeah normally we're in the Quail oval you'll see the lights flick on as you drive past or everyone's welcome to drop in and even just come for a run at training you may not even want to play you just want to come in have a run come in and do it and you never know where that might take you that's how I ended up playing for him was good old Freddy that we know dragged me down to training one day because there was no basketball that night and all of a sudden I've got thrown a shirt and I've loved it ever since how long have you been involved with it Jason two years this is my second year yep so Giants started in 2016 yep so they've been around for eight years or so now and it's becoming a very good family really is the way to describe it is people there to help each other they're there to play but at the same time we're trying to this week especially or this week coming week we're trying to win a game of football win the buck McPhee Cup back so do you know off the top your head this is a question without notice how many games would be left after the game next Saturday there's four four more games left you play we play every second week yeah so our great young bodies don't back up quite as quick as a normal football or sometimes so we play a giant masters football across the state plays across the country I believe plays every second week so there's four games left and then that will head into the national carnival which is over in Perth so there's quite a lot of people that will get themselves ready for that go to some training some state training sessions and head over to Perth later but for the Giants we've got this game against buck the buck McPhee game we've then got a another game against I can't remember the next one is Benelor I believe we'll go trip over to Benelor a trip over to Yarawonga on a Saturday night after the pigeons play up there which will be good for that for them you'll be good under the lights up there there they're excellent we're looking forward to that one and our very final game is against the Murray craze up in Orbury-Ridonga so you're on the road for the last four games at a year last three games will be on the road yep yep we've had a few home games in a row so we've we've had that there's ten games over the season so you get a bit of a good feel for the state as you drive around and it's one of the fun parts of it but yeah if you're around on Wednesday definitely get to the Marupna rec reserve when you see the lights on that'll be the old Giants playing football yeah no it's interesting you'll be really have you played on the lights before not those sort of lights no oh no because the koala lights are very bright they are magnificent lights but they're not real high towers so the ball really does get lost in the lights very easily Marupna and Deakin have got some world-class lighting that they're we're really looking forward to that yeah and of course at Deakin Antebok and Marupna rec they have hosted nine games in the past that are going to go and Valley League so yeah they're they're spot on their world-class lights yep so we're really looking forward to that and we really thank 1FM for the help that they've supported us with the with the at the Giants to get you guys out as a crew to actually broadcast one of our games is something that doesn't generally happen in Masters football other no other station that I'm aware of would go to the effort of what the Giants are doing next week so huge thanks to Adam Watkins who will organize all the tech side of things and to mark yourself Jason Welsh and whoever the team is that is broadcasting our game big thanks from me and from the Giants no worries Jason got any more for us in relation the GV Giants no that's it it's been a big couple of weeks and we've got a massive game coming up no worries Jason we'll leave it there and thank you for that and you'll be back on for the opening bounce wish we will be back there yes to talk about your pie's effort last night ordinary like well I wouldn't say ordinary but obviously injuries have got them your forward line you need a forward line yeah well I felt we needed that last year or calling would needed that when they won the premiership but anyway that's a debate or another day thanks
