Hi and welcome to the apprentice factory kayaboom district league show. This is a part of the Super Saturday Sports Show that you can listen to as to keep up to date with all things happening around the kayaboom district league. This show airs on a weekly basis on a Saturday throughout winter and is hosted by Sam Sarecito on one FM Shepard and radio so let's have a listen and see what they have got up to this week. And FM 98.5 live and local sport welcome to the Super Saturday Sports Show sees in the apprenticeship factory KDL football and that sport round 11 action after a hiatus last week. He's back in the chair to publish in the opposite of the apprenticeship factory kayaboom district league Sam Sarecino. How are you Sam? Morning stats and morning listeners very cold winter's day out there pretty foggy. It's lifting slowly so hopefully it lifts to be a nice winter's day today. For football and nipple. And it's my great pleasure to have met this like personally and is a ripping fella mind you. He's at the helm of Iron Barks Stadium currently the Rushworth Football Club, Mark Wheatley. Have we got you Mark? Yes, that's how you going? Yeah, great mate. I've got Sam Sarecino, the publicity officer of a course the apprenticeship factory kayaboom district league. Take it away Sam. Morning Mark. How are you? Yeah, really good take Sam. Yeah, yourself. Yeah, well, nice and foggy out at Katandra West, I'd imagine. Yes, it certainly is, but certainly the sun's trying to bike through but she's very proud at the moment. Now the Rushworth Football Club we know the story obviously racist last year back this year. Have things been going as a as a whole for the club? Oh, look obviously, you know, taking the vines over this year and the recent recess was always going to be a challenge, but that sort of paid my interest at the start of the year when the club originally spoke to me and, you know, basically a blank canvas which was really exciting and, you know, it was never going to be easy and it was never going to be a plain trajectory so we have our ups and downs still but the major focus was just to bring back enjoyment back to the club and yeah, I think we're going a long way into that. Tell us about the connection. How did you come about? Because I mean, when we spoke off here yesterday, you're at Katandra West, that's where you live. You've come up from Melbourne, of course. You know, it's an hour's drive across to Ironbach Stadium in Rushworth so how did the connection come about? Yeah, good question. I was sitting on my lawn mower actually, mowing the lawns out at the farm and got a focal layer of blue from Troy Old who's a bit of a recruiter in the big country, footy circles and yeah, sort of proposed a bit of a deal. I went in and I spoke to the guards at Rushworth and it all sort of started for me. Fantastic. Tell us a little bit about your journey because correct me if I'm wrong but you were involved with the Melbourne Football Club when the grand old flag was singing for the demons in 2021. You were part of the coaching staff when they won the AFL permission. Is that correct? Yeah, so more of a very foul level, but I was pretty lucky enough to get behind the same look with the AFL program as well and yeah, I suppose a bit of a journey. I was there for six or seven years, started out as just picking up cards and a bit of a volunteer and a Paul Carvish in the old development league and then sort of put my way up and was able to get mid-year roles and background roles and pretty exciting times we played a grand final under Jake Rawlings and the V-Fell and unfortunately lost that and sort of my career was tracking nicely and I could send myself as a bit of a development coach. I felt that was sort of a bit of a dream and just sort of sit one out, one back in the shadows top thing and it was tracking on nicely. I was head coach of the next generation academy and various other roles throughout the club and then the old coach had hit and sort of got still dampened as well and went out to end up going up to Madrid and coaching him up there for a couple years and then yeah, moved back to the family farm, obviously the parents are getting out of the way now, it sort of helped them out on the farm and yeah, I said it was sort of out of the blue, not that I didn't want to coach again but yeah, sort of out of the blue one, I take my interest and yeah, here we are. Fabulous and have you, have you rated the season so far, we're two thirds of the way through, have you rated it, has it exceeded expectations or do you feel that it's maybe on par or what, where do you see it? Yeah, so I, as I said, there's a club when I've gone to me, weren't going to buy success on just purely wins and losses, I think a lot of clubs when they go down that track can be really disappointed so there was a whole other set of parameters that we wanted to buy success on and that was obviously fielding a senior side and a third side, unfortunately the third didn't get up, it was the sort of the last minute where it fell over but you know then to blood young players to recruit strongly and as I said before, to bring that enjoyment back to football and what I mean by that is, I think metropolitan clubs, local clubs have tried to emulate, yeah, some of the environments so much that there's in that professionalism, there's obviously, you know, in my opinion, they've missed the boat, why I actually couldn't play in the first place and that's the enjoyment, it might be to have it be on a set day night, you know, and I was really focused on bringing back that enjoyment to guys where it's not a tool to play and it's actually a part of something that's bigger than themselves. And when you talk about enjoyment, I think you've done a smart thing when it comes to your training model, let me correct me if I'm wrong but you're only training one night a week as a club, tell me why? Yeah, so the old thing, just because it's always don't choose that Thursday doesn't mean it's right and you know the definition of insanity is to continue to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results, so rather than me copying phone calls and messages on a Tuesday, I won't be trying to know it or anything like that, we've brought in the one night a week model because I want guys running through the door and actually enjoying their training and understanding that this commitment to that sort of football and football isn't, a lot of people's number one priority these days, this family and work and other issues in society, so, you know, yes, it's worked for us as a club and look, that would be Nostradamus but I do say there'll be a lot of local country clubs that will look at this model and go, well, you know, we're still, we can still get the work in them, still getting, you know, 8 to 10 Ks in the players on a Wednesday night and, you know, they're not sure by Saturday, so, yeah, it's working for us, whether we go that in the future, I'm not sure but certainly working for us at the moment. One of the expectations you put on the players, given that you're training, you know, on the one night, the Wednesday, for them to do their thing in their own time. Yes, so I do a feedback, one positive in one hour, on a Sunday to all the players that find this only group and about their individual performance and their team performance and the early doors at the goal, we're not sitting up somewhere, you know, we need to be feeder and blah, blah, blah, and I sort of, I knocked that on the head pretty early because you obviously owe it to you and we will facilitate a one night of work training as a club. There's nothing stopping you from outside of training to make yourself fair and funny enough, those excuses have sort of dropped right off when I do give those feedback now because, you know, guys are doing stuff outside of 40 and I think, you know, that's really cool. 20, 25, I see the clubs already started the plan, it's fantastic because you're committed to the Tigers, which is fabulous. I imagine you've already started the planning and already started to look at the plane roster and securing, you know, your list for next year and having a look at the gaps where you need to feel. Yes, so we've identified as a 40 committee, early doors obviously, we've still got this season to play out in the six games to go but the club in the past hasn't been in those positions to actually start planning for the next year and I think it's a real professional stance that they're taking now and being a part of that's really exciting and obviously signing up, you know, we've had probably eight or ten bikes already signed on for next year of that part. Most of them are already talking to guys outside of that, a lot of guys which I really appreciate respect don't want to talk about next year and want their individual seasons to finish yet but I think it's a good position to come to burn and start training saves with pliers, particularly we can get across it. Now you talk professionalism, how much do you think Dean Shepherd, the President has to do with that, given his background and where he's come from, he's come from a club that's obviously won five of the last thirteen or fourteen completed flags in the game. How important is his input beam right across the board in terms of, you know, what he's been able to do for the club over the last couple of years? Yeah, it don't think, right? But it's also a collective work of a lot of people behind the scenes and it's, you know, really pleasing to see, you know, a little bit of a board traffic, the smiles on people's faces and, yeah, it's just not a one person job was I think. I may be in the past where it's been left up to two few and, you know, I was big on getting as many people on board for the ride and it's not just my ride or Dean's ride but it's, you know, a collective, collective bunch of people who are really working hard which is, you know, really rewarding. Now we're talking to Mark Wheatley from the Rushworth Football Network Club. Stetsie, we might have a look at today's round of matches while we've got Mark on the line and get his input. We'll have a look at Rushworth taking on Volatown, the first game scene. So we've got Mark, Rushworth in Tim's spot with the three wins in Volatown in thirteen spot, the one win. The Arnold brothers have been really, really solid for Rushworth all season. Of course played out at White Hills and I believe Dylan was at Pasco Vale in 2023. Both midfielders have been really impressed with them, what I've seen with them these season. Volatown is somewhat depleted today under Coach Wally Armstrong. I noticed Sam Lee, he's not playing. I noticed from Vanilla Brody Webster. Brody Webster's not playing either. Riley Dale has been playing some solid football in that midfield there. Best and Ferris, win a bit. I think Rushworth can get Volatown today at Ironbox Stadium. Yeah, I'm with you Stetsie. I think it's been a tough year for Volatown. I know that when we spoke to Wally Armstrong earlier in the year, he said it was a real battle when he got to play a sort of 19-20-21 because they were right on the edge in terms of their points. That's one thing that you guys are probably a bit more fortunate this year. How does that look moving forward, Mark, in terms of your points? I know that you've got 60, but you haven't been playing anywhere near 60. You've been sort of playing in that range of around 43-46 most weeks. How does that look moving forward for you guys? Number one and number two, Volatown, what do you know about them? Yeah, obviously the points, we asked the league, obviously coming back from where we're from. We asked the league for a bit of a reprieve in that area. I think we'll ask the league again whether it's 60 or not. We're not out of the woods yet. We're asking the crew, we're still going to attract players to go out of the middle. That just gives us a bit of cushioning as well around that area. We'll be approaching a league and hopefully we'll get a reprieve in that area. Volatown, obviously it's taught with Daniel. I don't really care about later positions. We respect every single soul we come up against. I haven't had a great year without the one win but that doesn't really mean anything when you go to two horse race and anything can happen on a day. I'll be really warning our players up a bit, playing at brand, playing at starlet and not going in for an easy kill because there's no easy kills in this competition. Shepherd and East in thirds, what the nine wins he sees and only the one lost to Lancaster. They've gone in the game, being six spotless, six in four victory. Look, the two recruits are from Shepherd and East Jake Sullivan and Dylan Webster Mill and of course Jake Sullivan from Abingal and Dylan Webster Mill from Dukie United. 81 goals between them this season have had a real impact for Shepherd and East. Yeah, looking at these two sides last nights, that's pretty much close to full strength. It's probably Shepherd East's best side. They've probably only got one out of that side that could come in and the game, you've welcomed back Mark Nolan from his overseas holiday. Biggs is back. The other fighter girl who's missed them going is back. John A. Moore's back. Wilson's back. They picked up Hockley from Seymour who's played a bit of senior footy this year. Liam, he's playing his first game today. Alex Rigney, his dad, David Rigney, I'm pretty sure played at Volotown in the day. So he's come across to play with him as well. So this is going to be a cracking game of football. Again, he's won three of the last four meetings between these teams. The only thing that I've known here is that he's, I think we were out there that day, that they did play. It was a broadcast game out at Central Park Shepherd and East and we know what happened that day. It was a 134 point win for Shepherd and East. Who do you like here? Mark, have you seen both these sides? We haven't come across to Gabby and I haven't had a chance to see them, but I've had a front-right search to Shepherd's last round in the word at home and, you know, I had the privilege of watching him against Taylor Groot. I believe you've already again a couple of weeks ago and I really like them. Obviously, there's Wayne Castle in merch and we haven't played merch yet, but yeah, I think Shepherd's a real shaky chance to win the flag. I love this style. I've put it back. It's a golden young and, you know, they're not cocky. And I actually mentioned to the last day, after the game, said, you know, you weren't cocky winners. They just kept playing and that, you know, no-on-the-market-real-smarted-pants-winner to put in better terms, but I was really, really smart with their ball use and really coin and well-drilled. Statsy who wins. I'm thinking Shepherd and East at Central Park. All about in the game, but you've got to respect them, don't you, with all those ends of Mark Wilson, been having a good year. He's played at pegs in VFA. He's played out at Kill or Park. He's a real weapon in that midfield and the FOB of the Gills is always just doing the job-waking, work-out in the game. But I just think Shepherd and East, and I think Mark's right. I think they're the sort of off-Broadway side that no-one's really talking about outside of Lancaster and Mergeson to Lambert. Yeah, I tend to agree. I think if they can stay fit and healthy, that's been probably the challenge when they've got to the back end of the season. But if they can stay fit and healthy and have a really good last set of the season, I think they can certainly challenge for the flag too. Next one, Statsy. Stan Ipe in fifth spot. Seven wins this season. Three losses take on Mergeson to Lambert with the nine wins and one draw. Who wins Mark? I know you said you haven't seen Merges yet. You've seen Stan Ipe, obviously. Yeah, I think Mergeson would have, again, without knowing too much about it. Obviously they've got some pretty powerhouse forwards. Stan Ipe, we're good. We played them a couple of weeks ago at their home brand. After two and a half quarters, we were probably in the game. And I was better at worst. We probably should have won that game. Then I found out my $10, which didn't really reflect the game, in my opinion. Yeah, but I would say Mergeson would have been that. Statsy, you with Mergeson? Some noise plays out at Stan Ipe, but you'd think Mergeson is just taking over for them at the moment. Well, they got James Lloyd up forward. Can he kick 100 today? We'll find out and see he's on 91 currently and we're just going to have to wait and see there. But he's every chance to. But Denny, and you got like the coach down back in Adam Robinson defensively as well. So it might be a bit of a harder task for James Lloyd to bring up that 100 today. But you'd think Mergeson to Lambert too strong. Yeah, I'm with you, Statsy. I think that he may not get it today, but yeah, I think that they'll do enough to be able to get the chocolates in this one. The next one, the next game we got is Telly Groomer in 7th spot, the 4 and 4 record this season. Take on Mergeson in 8th spot, the 4 and 6th record. You've seen both these sides, Mark, and I think this is going to be a pretty close game. Do you agree? Yeah, I certainly do. I bought on top three turns. Obviously, won't you, Mergeson and Stats very tough. I think the rest of them, there's a bit of a gap to the rest. But I think that on any given day, everyone's a chance to win with those, you know, the rest of the team, you know. So much to point to the corn, isn't it? I think Telly probably gets just a bit over the line, but who knows what could Gary can do because I'll go against Stats. And yeah, as I said, on any given day, who knows what can happen? But in history, what Harley comes to, obviously, got 7 in their last game. Brett Arjo has probably been a bit down in the last month. I mean, but to be fair, they've come up against some pretty good sides, so they hasn't probably had the opportunities that he had in the first third of the season. But I just think that Telly got a little bit more to play for, so I'm going for Telly Statsy, who are you going for? Well, going through to this yesterday, Harley comes to win your right kick 7. I didn't see him as playing today. Look, I think that on, I think Telly Grewritner had just got probably the better weapons with Arjo up forward. So I think Telly Grewritner should get Merrigan, but wouldn't surprise me to see it go the other way. Yeah, wouldn't surprise me. They'll be pretty tight. Next one. The next one is under and forward on his spot yet to win a game this season, up against Longwood in 11th spot with three wins. He give under a chance to break the duck, Mark, or not? Probably not. I think Longwood is better than what their record shows. And as I think saying, I need to be tight. Anyone can beat anyone. I think Longwood has got some really talented players. And if I get a hold of them, then it could be quite a big win, in my opinion. Do you agree with Mark Statsy? Yeah, I think the four most is in that midfield might be just a little too much for under all their role. He means being having a good season at Andira has kicked 18 goals. The ex-Merutna player of course, Dukie United in a nice spot. The three wins take on Gagarin to help swap with the two wins. I'm going to go for Longwood, but yeah, the next one, you're right. Mark, do you heard you like in this one? Gagarin or Dukie United? Yeah, another one is going again. It's probably Dukie, get the points. Gagarin, yeah, it's a good play. And there's a quick sigh on any given day. Anyone can beat anyone but I think yeah, it's probably Dukie. But we've got a bit too much answer to that midfield. I think I agree with Mark that if Aaron Cormack and Connor Hayes can continue their good form through that middle. And provide the supply, I guess, to Patty McMullen and Kyle Tapscott at Dukie. I think they can probably kick a winning score. Would you agree? That's it. I just think what you say and Mark touched on it. They got the finish as Kyle Tapscott of course is a premiership player at the Sheppen and Swans and their leading goalkeeper last season. Well, big shout out. They mentioned him all year in the Rock, Brian Dryden, the Rockman for Gagarin, who's played it in Bullock Cormack in his journey of football. I just think that he's been sensational. Gamble, responsibly, is a dollar a one for their best and fairest, but he just rocks all day and a big shout out to him really while he's style applied. Do you give him a chance? I give him about a 15% chance and a 75% chance to Dukie. I just think Dukie in order to get the finishers up forward. I agree, I agree. The next game is that's it? The final game and they're all on a Saturday. There's no Sunday games. Avonating four spot, the eight wins, two losses take on Lanky with the nine wins. One draw, of course that one draw is against Murchison to Lambert earlier this season. What do you see happening in this one? Because Avonals, two losses have been to the two teams above them on the ladder, of course, and now they're playing another one above them on the ladder, Mark. Yeah, I think Lanky came away with the four points again, boys, you know, they're really well good out there and it's really, really strong forward again and a really strong midfield. I'd like the way their game style is, too. They like to make the game really big and change lines and switch it, but they've got some really good polishing finishes and I think they'll be too strong for Avonals. I've spoken to Michael Mott, one of their president's strategies during the week, five wins, huge wins. Nicholas Ryan, who obviously played in their grand finals, served the 10-game suspension from that grand final. Paul Newman's back, Locky Bosker, Arnie's back. Mario Serif, he got through training, was going to be available. So they've got some really good wins in this team today, which is going to make it pretty tricky for Avonal, I think. Yeah, and also the likes of Zack Sarone, who I think, in my humble opinion, would be leading the McNamara medal at this stage of the season, but Avonal got a couple of really nice forwards, Dylan Hoistad that came to the club in 2023, he's kicked 23 goals, he sees one's there, leading goal score of last season, they picked him up from Epping and this Alex Crenko, I think that's how you pronounce it, I believe he's a premiership player at Wallen in the Under-9-8s, right the look of him and these kids only around 19 years of age and can kick up 40. And Brad Navales in really good form as well is getting plenty of the ball but also kicking goals. But look, in the end, I think Lanky's depth is going to be what gets him across the line, Stachi. Mark, thank you so much for taking some time out this morning to talk to us. Good luck today, good luck for the rest of the season and I'm sure we'll be talking more in 2025. Yeah, thanks a lot, I appreciate you having me and yeah, all the best. So that was Mark Wheatley from the Rashworth Football Netball club and we'll go to a break and then we'll come back after the break and have a look at netball. We now are in the netball report. Sam Sarasino, we're going to have a look at Telly Garoutna and Merrigan first because there's a couple of mulch style games for a couple of girls at Telly Garoutna today. Nine place Telly, four and six record Merrigan in ten spot, the four and six record. I want to congratulate Rebecca and Madison Brett playing, Rebecca's playing game 400 today and Madison game 300. Amazing achievement for these two girls. They have done a multitude of things for this club, been involved for a long time, served on committee, coached, played, been away while they've had their kids come back. Amazing achievement and they are now playing together in B-grade there, milestone, which is fantastic. It has that ironic that they're going to play milestone together in the same team and that's a fantastic game and netball too in B-grade. Both teams are underfoot at Telly Garoutna and Merrigan but in terms of the A-grade game, I think this will be pretty tight but I like Telly Garoutna stats here. They're not done yet. They were able to win before the general buy in a pretty close game against Merrigan to Lambert to keep their chances of playing finals alive. So I'm going for Telly to beat Merrigan in a close one. I'll go for Telly as well at home under coach Fiona Dan. Let's have a look at the other games. And during 12th spot, the one win this season, I had a forfeit loss. I had the forfeit a game, eight losses he sees and plus that forfeit. Up against Longwood in third, I need to spot the one win nine losses. Both clubs would see this as an opportunity. Definitely stats. He flipped the coin but I think Andira has been playing some really good netball. Just haven't been able to probably put it together for four quarters so I'm going to go for Andira to win this one. But Longwood's side having a look at that last night online looks pretty strong so they've probably got one of their best teams in so it'll be pretty tight. And as you say, I think both teams will fancy this and they will play accordingly. These are heavy weights at a competition going at it this afternoon. This spot, Dookie United, the seven and three record in a grade netball take on third spot Gagari with the eight and two record in third spot. So fifth versus third, we know Dookie United have been around the mark the last couple of seasons without getting the ultimate and Gagari have also been sort of around the mark without making the big dance. But wow, interesting times that game. Yeah, good game of netball. Really worth going out if you're out of Dookie. I know that football will be close and I think the netball will be close. Both teams have got really good players in form in every part of the court in every third. But I do like, I think just, I think Dookie stats here for me. I think it'll be a pretty close game though. I think Gagari might just get them interesting. It's going to be a really interesting game. Abundling six spot, the six and four record take on Lancaster in top spot, the ten and zero record. I don't think many saw Lancaster with ten and zero heading in to round eleven at the top of the season. Maybe not you and I, but definitely within the netball circles to some of the key stakeholders that I keep in contact with. They saw Lancaster as the big improver this year and they're probably not surprised. Given that Chiquita Vic is there. Cassandra Mahaland who's a good friend of Chiquita Vic playing there. It's just well balanced. Abundal obviously climbed back into the top six with their win over longwood last week. It's going to be a huge game for them to try and take on Lancaster. But I think the undefeated one bats will be too strong. That's it. I think so too even though it's at Abundal. I think they just roll along to Lancaster. Rushworth on of course the Einbach Stadium netball courts. They're in four. Don't get to win a game this season. Take on Violet Town with seven spot, the six and four record. Violet Town got up to a six and zero start. Dropped their last ball Sam. Yeah they should win today and it will allow them if results go according to plan to be back in the six at the end of today's stati. So I think that yeah the Violet Town girls can get back on the winners list. And Shepherd and East on the Central Park netball courts in second spot, the eight and one record and a four foot win as well. Take on the Gambi in fifth spot with seven and three record. Should be a really good game because the Gambi's form has been really good in the last three four weeks. They started the season strongly. Dropped their three games in a row and then it bounced back since Shepherd's have been pretty consistent. Outside there around two lost to Lancaster. They've been playing some really good netball and had some tight wins. I think that they will get the job done out at the Central Park courts today in a resting game. The defensive third of Keating Maskel and Doherty and then you got Shani Lloyd up in the gold attack area for the Gambi. I'm thinking Shepherd and East can get them at Central Park. Yeah I think so. Maybe stats it just before we go to the news. Let's have a look at the finals. I know that KDL announced them. First week the finals are at Avonor and Lancaster. Second week at Gagarian Andira.
