- You're listening to a one FM podcast. - We have a cue from the Shepherd in Game is Guild. Hey, go mate. - Good morning, mate. Yeah, good, thanks, self. - Yeah, not too bad. Now, look, it's been a long time since we spoke. I think last time we spoke I was right about a sold out event around this time last year, I think. - Yeah, it was about the time of ShepherdCon last year and we sold out last year and we're on our way this year, hopefully. - Now, you're telling me the entire venue is booked out. - Yep, the terminus have closed down folks. - They shut down folks. - We've closed the place down for us and we're hoping to get about 200 people through the doors over the weekend. - Yeah, and you're well over three quarters of the ticket sold. - We are, we sold about 165, I think, off the top of my head. And so there's about 35 left. You can buy them at the door through our ticketing site, which is Humanitix. - Yep. - And everyone's welcome. Come down, come through, play some games. - Yep, so before we talk about this year, so how did it go last year? - It went really well. I think everyone had a good time. The venue was really happy with us. They had a great time as well, 'cause a lot of people who just playing games all weekend and we had a lot of food and drank a lot of Coke, no sugar. - Yeah. - And yeah, we got good reviews out of it. They had a great time playing a lot of games. - Now, were there any dummy spits by people, the cards not falling their way? Was anyone cracking the sads for not winning? - I don't remember any dummy spits. I do remember one thing where I was playing a game with my friends and the board game's quite heavy. It weighs about 35 kilos. - Yes, yeah, I remember that. - It collapsed. - It collapsed. - And there's actually footage of me and my mate underneath the table trying to hold the thing up and fix it. - So it collapsed mid game? - The table collapsed mid game because it was so heavy. - Okay, I would put that down as a disaster for a board game. - Well, yeah, it was. We managed to, few people hold it up in the meantime and managed to save it and keep going. - Yeah. Now, what games have you got going on down there this year? - Well, everyone's bringing their own, but we actually have a few events this year, which will be, I think, exciting for a few people. We have a number of sessions of a game called Blood on the Clock Tower, which is a social deduction game. - Yes, I looked that up on YouTube and I had a watch and I thought, "You seek puppies!" - Oh, it's, why 11 year old plays it? And she loves it. It's great. We have a comedian called Jeff Setty. He's coming up to run a few sessions for us. He's great at it. Love's doing it. - So he's like the game's master, the one that does all the talking? - Yep, so he runs it all. Love's doing it and he's very, very good at it. And everyone tends to have a great time with it. So he's running three sessions and we'll see how we go if we get a lot of demand for it. - So the way that came across to me with my research that I did on Blood on the Clock Tower, would it be fair to describe that as almost Pluto on steroids? - Yep, that's a fair description, I think, but no board. So no board, you just sit there, you've got your own, you've given a character card, or you're given who you are and you get a help sheet. And, yeah, the good guys have to find the bad guys. - Yep. - Now it says, like in the rules, it was like over, it was saying the next day. So is this a game that goes on for days? Or is that just within the game? - That's just within the game, yeah. So the games go for about, oh, trying to think, probably about an hour or two, depending on how many players. And you can play, can play up to 21 players, I think it is. - All right, yeah. - I've never actually played it. It's not, I mean, it'd be fun, but my daughter always wants to play and so I'm like, oh no, you take my spot, try to be the good dad. - Try to be the good dad. - Yep. - Yeah, but do you like the game? - Well, I've never played it. Everyone I talk to raves about it. - Well, does your daughter like the game? - She loves it. So we went to Aubrey for their con up there called Humbug Con. Lisa's a lovely organizer up there. They ran three events and she had three of them and she played all of them. - Did she? - Yes, she played all three one each day and loved it. Actually, no, it was four. She played four of them, so. - Yeah, we're on. - So we've got to tell her to stop. - So once you fall down the rabbit hole with the game, you go in there. - Oh, that's like it with a lot of them. - With a lot of them. - Once you take your toe in, you're done. - So that's a competition or a tournament that you're running with? - The blood on the clock tower is just sort of a, he's running a few sessions 'cause it's the kind of game when you've got a good storyteller, they call it. It is really good. So we asked him to come up and run a few sessions for us 'cause he runs them in a number of cons. - We do have a tournament, we're doing a game called Blockus. - Yeah, what is that? I just thought of Tetris or Minecraft. - Oh, a bit of Tetris. It's a square board, four players. Every player's got different Tetris-like shapes. And you've got to place them out onto the board and block off areas, basically. - So, is that Connect 4 on steroids? - Oh my God. - Oh my God. - Not on steroids. - It's sort of a cross between Tetris and maybe Naughts and Crosses a bit. So, and then the winner is the person who blocks off the most area with their squares. - That sounds somewhat, it's, well, the way you've described it to me, that's somewhat easier to understand than blood on the clock teller. Is it easier to get into? - It's easier to understand, but it's one of those games, it's hard to master. - Oh, yeah. - Yeah, so it's easy, you just place your blocks out, but where you place them, how you place them, how you control that board is all, is one of those games, yeah. Easy to learn hard to master. - Yeah, yeah. - Basically you could be playing it in an expert at it, say if I were rocked up there and I was playing it and there's an expert sitting on the other end of the table. - Oh, they'd wipe a floor with you. - That does be playing with their food. - Yeah, pretty much. - Yeah, probably. - Not great, well, yeah. Well, there you go first. - I'm sure we'll have a few beginners if you want to come along and give it a go. - Do you have a ward for a dummy spitting? - Ah, no, we don't. (laughing) Yeah, we see the thing is most people are just sort of, whether they don't want to or they're too embarrassed to, they tend to just sort of walk away quietly. - Yeah, yeah. Then go into a Facebook post. - Yeah, a bit of Facebook post maybe. Haven't seen them yet, maybe just to their friends, I don't know. - Yeah, yeah, so you've got blood on the clock tower, you've got a tournament with blockers. So what do you mean when you say tournament? - So we're gonna run, we've got a few copies of the game and basically we'll run until we're with one player. - Yep. - And that player will get a prize. - Wait, wait. So what do you mean is there's multiple tables playing the same game? - So it's like a, look, the only way I can describe it, it's like a poker tournament with multiple tables and it just gets whittled down, whittled down, whittled down and then things get tense. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - And then, yeah, we may end up with a table flip, but maybe not. - Yeah, well. - I don't think it's, I don't think there's that much on the line though, hopefully not. - You never know, some people don't like to lose, they have to be in control of everything. - Some people do. We do try to teach people to be tolerant. - Tolerant losers. - Tolerant losers. - Well, maybe I should come 'cause then I could learn a little bit of tolerance. - Well, I think you're pretty tolerant, eh? - Oh, well, it depends who you ask. I'm fair enough, it depends who you ask. 98.5, well, if I'm live and local, we're speaking with Q, we're gonna take a quick song break and we'll be back to talk games. ♪ We love our sponsors ♪ ♪ And especially this one ♪ - SDP Tax has been your trusted local accounting firm and has been proudly helping people just like you across the Golden Valley and beyond for over two decades. So, on the Super Skills Kids event, I think they're going to play game of Crocodile, which is a game on a round board where you flick a disc, a wooden disc across the board and try and get it into the hole in the center of the board. There's little pegs around it and to make it harder and your opponents' discs are there as well. So, just one of those dexterity games that kind of like, there's a lot of them around the world where they're little just flicking a disc across a board and try to beat your opponent, basically. - So, the kids stand around in a circle around it? - Yeah.
