You're listening to a one FM podcast. You're listening to Youth Matters on one FM 98.5. Welcome back to a maintainer on one FM. I hope you were all having a fantastic afternoon. On today's hour, the topic is littering. I'm pretty sure I've covered this before or I at least should have. My program is also environmental, but I think for the most part, all I've covered to do with littering is talking on clean up Australia Day and also participating out on it myself and then sharing the experience on here. We already had our clean up Australia Day this year and it was such a big success in a lot of communities across the country, including our own. So today, I'll just be covering all over litter, sharing some facts and whatnot. So stay tuned for that. - Wanna see them live and local? - Welcome back to women's hour on one FM. If you didn't already hear today, I'm discussing littering. As I've said previously, I'm pretty sure I've covered this before, but in a different way, such as clean up Australia Day, where I went out and participated in and came back to report how it was on this radio show. So I encourage you next year to do the same when the time comes. Because of course, we're talking about littering today, I'd like to get the obvious out of the way. Littering is illegal here in Australia and I quote, "It is an offence to leave, throw, deposit or abandon litter in onto or from a public place of vacant crown land." I like to assume, especially in this community and how we are with our farmlands, animals, et cetera, around us that we don't litter or at least on purpose for the most part. When I pick up litter or see it out about the community, I like to have the benefit of doubt in mind that people aren't doing this with bad intentions. Or maybe it's fallen out of a car, a pocket, it's blown away in the wind, et cetera. But from my recent research, I've actually found when you accidentally litter, it can still be an offence. And I quote, "You may be issued an infringement for throwing or dropping litter, even unintentionally, as it is an offence under the Litter Act 1979." Stay tuned as I'll be giving out more interesting facts and statistics, but up first, I do have a few songs for you. - You're listening to 1 FM 98.5. - Welcome back to Women's Hour on 1 FM. Thank you so much for joining me today. Today, our topic has been littering, and I've just talked about the obvious. Littering is illegal, of course. But as I was talking about it being illegal in my research, I found even accidentally littering can be an offence in Australia. So thank you for continuing to join me as I discuss this topic today. And a little more on the serious part, in Australia, it's estimated that around 8 billion secret butts are littered each year, making them the most common form of litter. Additionally, about 7,000 pieces of litter are found per 1,000 square metres in urban areas. We have also sadly reached 41% of our litter being plastic, such as plastic containers and bottles. Plastic can take hundreds of thousands of years to break down completely. This long decomposing process time is a significant concern because it means that plastic waste persists in the environment for a long extended period, causing harm to wildlife and our ecosystems. It's essential to reduce plastic usage and properly decompose our plastic in our community. Please stay tuned because I have more songs coming for you. - What a fam, live and local. - Thank you for joining me on Women's Day with this afternoon. I hope you've all had a lovely day. Of course, it's now time for the Court of the Week. And since we are on an environmental topic this week, my court I've found is nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. This court reminds us of the beauty and resilience of nature. It encourages us to appreciate its pace and processes in our efforts to protect the environment. - One FM live and local. - Thank you for listening to Women's Day with this afternoon and joining me. Have a lovely rest of your week and your night. - You've been listening to a One FM podcast.
