You're listening to a one FM podcast. The advisor established in 1984 from informative political and council updates to sport and human interest stories and everything in between. It leads the way in community news in the Goldbun and Murray Valley. Will it be Will or Jeff joining Plemow today on 98.5? Let's find out right now. And let's find out. Is it Will or is it Jeff? Which one is it today? Plemow, you've got Will this week. G'day Will, how are you doing, mate? I'm going well. Thanks. I hope you are too. And along with all your many listeners across the valleys on this crisp winter's morning. Yeah, hopefully they're still in bed with a cup of coffee, just staying nice and warm. Now, you've told me a fishy story. That's right. On our front page, this week we've run with the main article on the front page being get hooked these school holidays. It's all about students from Duffery Street Primary School joining the VICOR. They joined the Victorian Fisheries Authority last week to help stock 750 catchable-sized rainbow trout into Victoria Park Lake. Fantastic. That's exciting for people who love to throw a line in. Are you a fisherman? Look, I'm not, but I often think I should take it up. It involves being able to get out in the great outdoors and explore our waterways and things, too. Well, a little bit of advice. If you're going after trout, get the tiniest hook you can possibly get, because they've got a small mouth. I've tried to catch trout down at the lake before, and I got a bit excited, and I had the wrong-sized hook and the wrong-sized lures, and the trout just went berserk striking it, but it was too big. So the tip is, boys and girls, and Will, a tini hook. There you go. Yeah. Put a worm on it as well, that won't hurt. Very educational. This chat we have at each week. Yeah, Bob. I wouldn't call it educational, but, all right, I'll take it. Educational talks with Will and Plimo. Plimo moving right along. We've also got, on our front page, a story about job losses looming at Daring Girl Prison prepares to close 160 employees at Daring Girl Prison, which is situated between to sure and Manchester. We're informed last week that their jobs in the Goblin Valley would be no more within weeks. This comes as the state government moves to close two prisons, the other being Port Phillip Prison. So that's a real shame. It's a lot of jobs. I mean, 150 people. Yeah, sure. Let's say, let's be optimistic, and 50% of people get another job around the Goblin Valley. What happens to the other 50%? It's a lot of jobs to find in a short period of time. Look, it certainly is. And the disappointing thing about this year is it was completely out of the blue, as I understand. So there's no chance for anybody to sort of rally around them and maybe come up with a plan for them to transition into other roles. I believe they have been offered jobs in other prisons. But when you've lived and worked in the Goblin Valley for a while, we all know what a wonderful place it is to live and work. And things and it's just such a shame. I think a lot of those jobs will, a lot of those people will no doubt move away, as you say. And it's such a shame. Yeah. And it is not the environment or the landscape to be getting up and trying to find a house somewhere else with the shortages on houses everywhere. So I wish all those people well. That's true. So from my own sort of point of view, it just seems crazy that we're closing prisons when they're obviously needed. And Darrin Goss just served such a wonderful purpose for the low security inmates. I believe, I've known a couple of people who have worked out there over the journey. And they provide a lot of great programs and services for those low security prisoners. Yeah. It's more rehabilitation and re-aclimatisation than anything else. Yeah. That's what I was going to say. It's the rehabilitation side of things. But when they're low security prisoners, there's much greater chance of proper rehabilitation. So yeah, that's a real blow and no doubt the powers that they're rallying around those people and trying to help them through this transition. And Plimo moving right along, we've also got a really great article about La Trobe University's efforts. It's philanthropic efforts and the basis delight co-founded Roger Gillespie along with some other partners is financing a program called the Bradford Shepherd and Pathways program. And it's over the next five years, which will allow greater Shepherd and secondary students, sorry, greater Shepherd and secondary college students, conditional entry into their chosen university course. And this is all because the gap in higher education from regional centres like Shepparton and versus metropolitan centres is vast, with 52% of school leaders in Melbourne going to higher education or off to uni compared to 18% for greater Shepparton. So that gap is huge. It's a wonderful program that co-bakers delight co-founded Roger Gillespie and partners saw the opportunity to try and lift that percentage of students leaving school and going on to higher education. I guess being in the Golden Valley, it's more salt of the earth. You actually see the farm jobs and the manual jobs and everything like that. And you may think that's the only direction that you can go, whereas somebody in Melbourne, all they see is the hustle bustle and all the clerical work and all those kinds of things. So I can see why the numbers are lower. Yes. And look, a big part of this is having the actual higher education institutions and facilities for our students in the Golden Valley to aspire to go on to higher education and leading the charge there as well as a tribe university ship. They do a wonderful job there that I know their campus is going through some renovations at the moment, but so short-term, pain for long-term gain, but Elizabeth Head of Campus there and her team are doing an amazing job at helping in that space. So I'm good on them for doing this. It's helping change young people's lives for the better. Only a positive thing. Now, speaking of future proofing. Yes. We've got an article just inside the 2024-2025 Council budget there. So Greater Shepherd and City Council has adopted the 2024-25 budget, which focuses on significant infrastructure investments for residents while thinking to maintain financial stability as well. So there's a lot more information there about that. And also... You haven't doctored the book yet, mate. I have not won the GMC. You give away. To give away. Wait. How much is it? Is it $500 prizes? I'm trying to find your entries, Plomo. Your entries, Plomo, you're probably going to get one in every day at Fairways-IGAA. Yeah. I certainly am. The lovely café ladies down there. I don't go there for the bacon and egg roars. I go there for the sarcasm, but they do do a fantastic bacon and egg roars. So each morning I enter after grabbing one of those and a coffee. Oh, good on them. So no doubt they look after you very well there. They're a great bunch. Yeah. So people... That's a really good point to raise. But no, people are being rewarded for shopping local and it's all thanks to the Dobbler Murray Credit Union, the GMCU, the team there, provides $25,000 to give away in $500 shopping sprees and there's one grand prize of a $5,000 shopping spree that will get drawn later this month. But in the meantime... Well, I could give away a car if I won that. Well, that's it. The thing is, you'd have to be incredibly lucky to win the whole lot. But you... There's many, many winners already at $500 shopping spree, and let me tell you, I've spoken to some of them myself and they are absolutely delighted to be doing this. And the one thing they're all saying is this has come at a great time. So I've only, I suppose, emphasised the fact that yes, we're under a cost of living pressures at the moment and these $500 shopping sprees are very welcome. Yes. So we've got our latest winners, there's six of them this week, and they have shopped out places like JJ's Corner, Target Shepherdham, where else have we got? We've got SPC Factory Sales, we've got a winner there again, fantastic furniture shepherdham, couture of food works, fairly's IGA and more. All people have to do is spend $10 or more at a participating business, and there are about 150 businesses around Shepherdham and Maroona and Couture as well that are participating. So there's plenty of chances. Yeah, don't be afraid of that little poster thing there with the entry forms on it. If you spend the money, enter it, can't hurt. Well, believe it or not, there's already 45,000 entries, hard-copy entries have been entered. So, you know, all over the place, spotlight, Harris Garth, it's wonderful. And there's winners from places like Cobham from Shepherdham, of course, but spread around the area. So it's great to see people coming into Shepherdham to shop and certainly people to increase your chances. Yeah. And Plano, we've also got some letters to the editor. Anything juicy? Well, look, there's usually, I love the letters to the editor. There's usually some really interesting points of view, and it's an opportunity for people to discuss topics that they're interested in or concerned about, whether it be local issues or all sorts of topics. But we've got a couple, there's one, from the Futura Rotary Change overnight, there's also another one for the park closure extended. In fact, I think I've just read you the briefly noted snapshot info there. So, but there's always some interesting letters to the editor as well. And also, Plano, we've got an article there just, I suppose, a report more so on a business community networking nut that was held recently, the Greater Shepherdham Business Network, which is, of course, formerly Shepherdham Chamber of Commerce. Now, this one was hosted by Shepherdham Optus Business Centre, Victoria Regional North at Noble Monks, another local business, and a big crowd of local business owners, managers and employees gathered at Noble Monks to hear about Anthony and Connie Spadaro's journey with the Optus Business Centre, and it was a really great night. So, there's some photos there and more information. And we've also got an article, speaking of the Greater Shepherdham Business Network, there was the President's Dinner, which happened recently, it was actually last week. So, there's a bit of a report on that one as well. So, we've got a report on $6 million being spent on Council's Road Resealing Program. Hello, Lucia. Yes, exactly. There's plenty of potholes still out there, and the Council are trying their best to get those mended for us, which are wonderful. Well, I see a lot of roadworks going on at the moment, so, you know, there is progress. It's taken time, but the ball seems to have started rolling, which is fantastic. Better late than never. Absolutely. There's also an article from a local gentleman about nuclear power for Australia, the scientific perspectives and economic reality. So, that'll be an interesting one. Shepherdham Library, we've got an article about the benefits of Shepherdham Library, which there are many and varied, but also, Gary Disha is bringing his latest novel called Sanctuary to the Shepherdham Library on Sunday, July 14th. So, Gary Disha has published 60 titles across multiple places. Yes, I was talking to Bronwyn, Bronwyn Cole from the libraries, not last Monday, the Monday before, and I asked her how many books she'd read of those 60 books, and she said one. There you go. There you go. Now, have you got one more story for me before I let you go? Sure. Well, we've just got, I just want to give a plug to our trades and services section in the class five. Obviously, employment as well, people are looking for a new job or career. We've got very quickly a feature celebrating NAIDOC week, which is next week, and we've also got our sports and JVL previews and things like that. So, yeah, get you a copy of the advisor today. So, it's not quite live, is it? The front, live on the internet, the front page for today's edition or the latest edition is up, but it's not actually live quite yet. That'll happen in the next hour or so? Yes, I think the below zero temperature and slide things down here online somehow, but we've got the articles are live this week's edition on the home page of the advisor, but the actual digital edition is still updating. So, that'll be, hopefully, in the next hour or so, that'll be ready to look at online. Thank you very much, Will, for informing us of the value of what's going on, and I look forward to reading the advisor. Thanks, Planone, thanks again for all your hard work, you and your team at 1FM, you guys do a wonderful job there. We try, we try. All right, enough of the kisses and hugs, I'll catch you next week. No worries, Planone. Thank you. I feel that, Will Adams, from the advisor, it'll be dropping in your letterbox very soon, it'll be totally live very, very soon as well, just go to advisor's website.
