Hi and welcome to Sport and Road, the weekly motorsport show with thanks central tire service. This is a part of the Super Saturday Sport Show that you can listen to and keep up to date with all things happening on the courses both locally and around the globe. This show is on a weekly basis on a Saturday throughout the year and is hosted by John Hainter at Craig Start. It's on 1 FM, Shepherd and Radio, so let's have a listen to see what's happening in the world of motorsport this week. Good morning everybody, sport and road time, time for some motorsport here on live and local 1 FM. It's Saturday morning sport and I hope you're enjoying the program that's coming to it. We've had a lot of results and things this morning from the stats man. I'm John Hainter and I'm Craig Start, good morning listeners and good morning John. Morning Craig, how are you mate? Not too bad at all. That's good, yeah. It's nice to sit back here and relax. It really is, yeah. I'm doing the show, this is a lot of fun. I enjoy this, yeah, it's good fun. I do, and the wife's outside. Yeah, doing her phone things and been some pieces. Yeah, exactly, it's good. I'm going to get out of here and head down to Melbourne because I've got my grandkids on a steam train from Ringwood out to Bell Gravenback, so that'll be later on this afternoon. Time I get down there, it'll be about two o'clock, so we're on a shuttle at about three, so it'll be good. I'm always looking forward to that because that's called Puffing Billy, isn't it? No, it's up to where Puffing Billy starts from. Oh, okay. Yeah, Bell Graven. Yeah, Bell Graven, exactly. Yes, you just have fun on where Elvis was scooter through there. I'm hearing you. It was flat out, it was a one, two, five, three speed, when it was flat out at forty-five k's. I could do fifty-five, pulled the clutch in, going down the airfield road hill, won the windows up as well. I didn't have any time to worry about it. If I crass back on the billion seat and stuck my head above the headlight, I could almost get fifty out of it. That was miles of an hour, no doubt. That was good fun. But none of me basically catching me across the top of the landing dogs. Yeah, it was great. The floorboards going through the corners, it was good fun. I remember years ago, when they were doing the Berlin extension from Berlin Road to Doncaster, the freeway there, I knew a couple of the road people and part of, they had to put the creek under the ground and they'd put the concrete base in and they'd just put the tunnels on, so they diverted and pumped the water around. I was with a Kerrigan's towing at the time, and I was in the R.A. van. Especially if you've got a call that was a crash somewhere, you've got to get there as quick as you can and sign up. I was in the R.A. van and I'd get there quick from Boxhill all the way down to Balloon and I was there that quick, I could go through the tunnels and beat all the tow trucks and everyone else. It was a lot of fun. Yeah, I remember there was a crash at the corner of one turn of road and a Canterbury Road in Ringwood one afternoon. We heard that we were doing a tapping on the water main at the house, whether up the road. We heard the bang, we looked out and the two cars hit each other. The drivers have got out, they've exchanged names and addresses, done all the right things, got the car driven away. Three minutes later, there are eight tow trucks and no cars. I thought that was good fun. It certainly was. Things we did years ago. We used to sit in the back of a station wagon, lay down in the back of a station wagon and wave at the cars behind us. I think I love you. We had a HZ station wagon when our two younger ones were born, we were living back in the Western District and we had four kids between us plus we then had the two. So there were six of us in the old HZ. I'd built a rack that went in the back of the thing that Andrew's bassinet went in with a safety net harness went over the top of that. So we could put him in his bed, put that in. There was one of those plastic school seats that I'd pinched and screwed to the frame as well. The youngest daughter sat in that beside Andrew looking with her feet down the spare wheel. We're looking at the back window. It worked. She had a seatbelt on. Yeah, a policeman stopped us coming out and done Kaldi wouldn't have a look because he thought it was great. Things we did like that. People cannot back trailers in caravans in Berwood. They had the chip there to the pit and the number of people that could not back their trailers. Give us a dollar and I'll back it up for you. I'm trying this trail. It's got a very short drawbar and it's an absolute muggle of a thing to try and keep straight but any other trails, no problems at all but that one rotten thing. So I think that's good fun. And then many times you go to the tip and come home with more than... Oh yeah. Oh yeah. And now they've got the shop next to them. Yeah, they do. It's quite different. Took them a long time to wake up to that. Oh, very true. That's good fun. So what else have you done during the week? Not a lot really. A few hours on the radio. Yeah, definitely. Some of the usual shows have enjoyed that. I got over the the missing shows last week, which was good. I was here on the Saturday for Sport and Road but the day before I'd had my umbilical hernia checked. It has me tummy sticking out a bit and it's bloated things and stops the toilet side of it a little bit. Slows me down and so yep three to six months I'll fix that for me. Great. No worries. A bit worried about. I saw one of those Fox adventure things that was called in the hospital sort of thing and the operating theater and they were doing that exact operation. I'm watching for this is what they're going to do to me. Oh, hang on. Do I want to watch this or not? Yeah. I found it strange when I had my brain tumor. Yep. They started wheeling the bed in. I said, "No, no, I can walk." "You're not allowed to walk." Yeah. "You got to lay down." I said, "I'm lying down. I'm perfectly good walking." I'll sit in the wheelchair. Okay. So I get to the theater doors and I'm out of the chair walking to the theater and there's everyone half scrubbed up and settled. I saw the surgeon and TV's everywhere. I give them credit and obviously I could see where they're going to euthanize me and I asked the questions and they answered and showed me everything. Oh, technology is unbelievable. It's incredible. Yep. I give them good credit. Incredible. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. The video they showed from inside this fellow's tummy where they were very gently pulling the intestine out of the belly button area and the way they did it was so and the pictures were so clear. Oh, unreal. And then they pushed this other piece through and had the mesh in it and I thought, "Good grief." Absolutely amazing. Yeah. I thought, "Well, they're going to do that to me." The bloke was out of bed that day and went down the day after so, yeah. But not allowed to lift anything for about two weeks. Yeah. Not even a milk carton. Exactly. So we have to be careful there. Yeah. That's okay. Yeah. My son has a done. He's going to be able to be careful because he won't be able to lift the baby up. Yeah. So definitely. That's that little bit of sad news. One of our dear listeners at 1FM has passed away. Yeah. That's yeah. Yeah. Gloria Rancin. And the Ramsey Street crew. Yeah. So, and Darrin and everyone. Yeah. Rest peacefully, they might, yeah. Exactly. And that's along yesterday and the spot and all the crew. Yeah. Exactly. So, anyway, that's that talking there. Hey, you're talking about Puffing Billy. I said Puffing Billy. Yeah. I saw something the other day. Puffing Billy. 140 years old. Yeah. One of the original Indian. The NA class. Yeah, exactly. I didn't believe that. I wasn't around then. No, me neither. Yeah. That three main lines. It was the Furture Gully right up to Gembrooke. There was another one went through Nuji. There was another Narragage. And the other one was down at Beech Forest down in down the Opways. They had another one down there on those. They went from Colby or Campa down to one of those particular towns and wound up in through the mountains into there and Narragage was in strain. Yeah. And they used those little NA class locos down there too. Which are now everybody calls them Puffing Billy. That's how I called them Puffing Billy. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Talking about Puffing. What about their good sponsors? Oh, yeah. They're wonderful, aren't they? I saw one of the guys the other day doing a tractor tire and he was struggling, so he was puffing away. Oh, I'd reckon. Yeah. His name wasn't Billy, was it? No, no, no. I'd hate to change tractor tires. Oh, yeah. Same here. Especially some of them have water in them, aren't you? Yeah. Oh, better learn to fill them up with water. Yeah. Put the water back in. It's the biggest problem. But no, they're busy as bees at the moment. And they're coming up to school holidays, so please get your tires fixed. Exactly. Checked, pressured. Yep. Everything done like that. Yeah, especially on a way of the kids have already done that for my kids. Headlight, going to Melbourne later, if you're saying that. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah. Could you auto care? They've got a full set of automotive batteries too. Yep. Because there's even Craig at the Pepper Mill, the other Craig. He had to get a battery for his patrol. Yep. Or Navarre actually, but still listen. Yep. So, yeah, batteries are going left, right and center. And I've noticed on Facebook, the newest people are collecting the batteries to raise money for different facilities. Yeah, for sure. I've done a bit of cleaning out at home. And I've probably got eight or nine that's over the years have been put aside somewhere. So, they're going into Paul at Natrad. And he's the one that's collecting all the batteries and that rad in Shepherd. Hey, yeah. Yeah, something else I did not long ago was change my nine-volt batteries in my spoke detector. Yeah, I do that every year. Twice a year I do. A bit late this year. Yeah. And we've had the winter solace. So, the days are only going to get better I hope. They certainly are, they are at the moment. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, they're taking long to make a different set. It's only a couple of minutes, but yeah. I'm getting off the track from Goodyear Auto Care. Oh, we certainly are. No worries at all. Yeah. So, they're fantastic sponsors. They get your car ready and safe for school holidays to disappear away. That's just weekend too. That started. Yeah, exactly. So, please make sure everything's safe. That's correct. And we're very important here. We've got another good sponsor. We do, chev it on motorcycles in Purcell Street and also in Bennell Road. That's correct. And Purcell Street's home at KTM and I was going to say segways, but they're over the other side. Yeah. KTM, the can ambs, the side-by-side, all of those particular things, even those quirky three-wheel spiders. I was in there the other day having a look around and they had some of the bigger can ambs sitting out the front by either big. And then there's this little slow, slung sporty one sitting on the end of it. Oh, that looks like it could be fun. That's the paddle shift gearbox and the semi-auto transmission. Now, you just flick the thing as you're going through the gears and it changes for you. But then when you stand on the brakes and start to slow down, you're back off the throttle, you're on the brakes and this thing's down shifting underneath it. Doing it automatically, you get up to the lights and you're sitting in neutral weight and a go. That's not bad. Just incredible. Yep. Amazing things. These, a little of these new cars now, as soon as you pull up a traffic lights, the engine stops. Yep. Yeah. And unbeknown to me, I've taken the motor out of this car and put it back in and it's got it all going and time to take it for a test drive and it stopped and oh, no, I'm panicking. What do I do? Put it going again and kept me foot on the brake and the throttle. Yep. I know what you mean. Yeah. So it's a learning curve because these panel shops sometimes aren't informed about these new vehicles and what is that? Yeah. It just pushed me the point to now, just study all these cars. I know they've got the things worked out properly, but with my, when I had to say when we worked it out, if I'd left Marupna to go to the marketplace, you'd have to drive. Yeah, I would. And then there was three sets of lights in Marupna, one at the start of Shepp and then one at the police station and one, two, three, four going through to Bob Jaynes, then another two or three before he got sent. Every one of those, if you stopped in one of those cars, the motor would stop. So we worked with that. If you went to the marketplace and came back in one of those and caught every set of traffic lights, that engine would restart 27 or 28 times on the one trip. Yeah, a bit ridiculous, isn't it? One in my eyes, it is. One to how long to start a motor's last night. But someone said they even have a separate starter motor for that function. I thought, yeah, good grief. Then I saw another one that American engineering at it's finest with a starter motor was actually in the bell housing of the engine. Oh, dear. How are you going to get it out? Oh, you've got to drop the gearbox to get the starter out. Yeah. I know some of the first Honda legend I had to do a body shell on and the place is in there. Mr. Some could get their hand in there. Yes. Unbelievable. Yeah. Yeah. And it was funny when I did a fair lane body shell Falcon XF fair lane body shell and took the whole car apart. I mean, everything off the car wheeled the old body shell out. Then the customers come in and I want to have a look at my car and we're wheeling in the new body shell. Yeah. Oh, no, my car, my car. You know, big pile like that. Yeah. Yep. And the boss said, no, let's start putting it together and he's putting this on and that on. Yeah. The longest thing on the first thing you put on the car is the brake lines. Yeah. And fuel lines. They're the longest thing. Absolutely. Yep. Absolutely. So it's amazing how people don't tweak how our cars go together and there's a lot more to it. Yeah. Absolutely. Look at a normal mechanic. You know, you've got to really know the Melbourne 8 or K phone book twice. Yeah, definitely. You start looking at your suspension, your bull joints, your tie rod ends and you start racking pinions and different types of steering engines, internals of the engine, you know. Yep, exactly. Push right over head cam and quad cam and a lot of them you mentioned Mr. Ackerman and they've got no idea what you're talking about. That's incredible. You've got the automatic transmissions, manual, rear ends, wiring, fuel pumps. Incredible. Yeah. And then setting a set of points. Hey, I saw one on Facebook the other day. The teachers come into a new class. All the kids are sitting in the classroom waiting and he's got to mark the role and he's going down the role and there's one he can't work out. It was a little Johnny. No, it was I J K M was what the name was, I J K M. So he said, I don't know how to say this one. So I'm going to spell it out. I've got to ask you who it is. And he's gone through it. I said, now I'm looking for I J K M and her girls get up and said, that's me. He said, how do you spell that? She said, no, Elle. We've got we've got motorsport to talk about. We do. Sorry. Severed a motorcycle, but we did get carried out to both ways. Great. That's true. Two great stores in the other one. It's a long equipment. Exactly. For the four strokes yet. You don't have to mow the grass at the moment, but it won't be long before it starts to grow. It's going to start jumping out of the ground again. I won't take long. So they've got all the four strokes, lawnmowers, webbersnippers, blowers. Now we've been very remiss over the last couple of weeks. We've talked putting out supercars, all of the... What's wrong with that? Well, nothing wrong with that, but they're all close together. And we sort of miss motorcycling a little bit, which is what I love. So it's just, we'll bring you up to date on a couple of little pieces, because tonight, it's that day, the 29th, they are racing at the Cathedral of Speed. That's Hasen. How about wind, and there's made of tonsils, and go through the sponsors, and then you'd straight into it. Yeah. That could be a good idea. What a good idea. Why didn't I think of that? And whereas it always get this road to move back in a minute, folks. Okay. Then 9th place Matthew Payne, Penwright Racing. He's on 795. And 10th place is Richie Stanawate, Penwright Racing. Other Penwrights, yeah. He's on 763 points. Now, the Townsville 500. I had a look at Mr Wickey Pedia to find this one. That's the free encyclopedia. The Townsville NTI 500 is an annual motor racing event for supercars. No shit, Shell. Exactly. Held on the Rida Park Street Circuit in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. The event has been held since 2009. The event is known as a Townsville 400 based on a 400 kilometer format. Yeah, it was known as a 400. Yeah, exactly. That's right. In 10 of the first 11 years of the event in 2021, the event returned to the 500 kilometer format first used in 2014. While in both 2020 and 2021, two Townsville events were held under the Townsville super sprint banner due to calendar changes and shorter races caused by the COVID pandemic. The event is staged over a three-day weekend from Friday to Sunday, two 30-minute practice sessions held on the Friday. Saturday features a 15-minute qualifying session which decides the grid positions succeeded by a top 10 shootout, followed by the 250 kilometer race. A 15-minute qualifying session is held on Sunday, succeeded by a top 10 shootout again and the combined results are which decide the grid for the following 250k races. Yeah, there you go. Yeah, there it is. That sounds well and that's next weekend. Yeah, I don't remember Danica Hill from the country. Yes, yes. She's in Japan with a Dan and little sister. I'm not sure that you back just after this race. She had a run round of supercar last time and was talking about it for a week. That eyes wide open. You know, Chevrolet supercar engine fix almost complete. Yeah, that's interesting, isn't it? KRE is this week set to complete work on the 15 Chevrolet supercar engines affected by the thrust bearing issue which manifested itself in Darwin. Now, this is from Daniel Herrera at speedcafe.com. We thank them for pitching their stuff all the time. Three Camaro's underwent Saturday night engine changes at Hidden Valley after Brody Kostake's Arabic motor spot entry could not start race 11. Of the season and metal filings were found in the filter of a Brad Jones racing entry and one of Matt Stone racing. Brad Jones himself, in his epiminous, that's a big word, post on tech video would reveal the issue to be the crankshaft thrust bearing which KRE race engines Kenny McNamara has now confirmed. As it turns out, a new specification of thrust bearing was installed during the last phase of rebuilds but the engines in question mostly went unused until recently. One was running just the other day in the MSR Camaro which Nick Perk had his driving on supercars behalf for tyre testing purpose after which the fix will be complete. We freshened 15 of them and they've all just been sitting in trucks ready to use McNamara told speedcafe. They're in road cases in trucks but there's a lot of money involved in that. Five have been used and three have sort of had an issue so we need to get them out and then swap them around. I think there's one more running yesterday and we can't do that until it comes back from the test. We'll do that today and then we're all done. The change has been made because the original speck of bearing was being worn out by heavy clutch usage though not badly enough to cause the issue which arose at Hidden Valley for Kostake. The manufacturer supplies the same bearing to NASCAR but that category implies rolling starts rather than standing starts and hence it escapes the supercars level torture in North America. Furthermore, the durability testing which were easily took in the United States cannot eliminate clutch usage as the thrusting motion on the start line. We went with a different design that was the same as the NASCAR guys used and that's quite a good bearing but obviously not up to the task of getting hammered by the clutch explains McNamara and we're sitting on the line locker which is even worse the old motors used to do it. It's nothing new just these ones do it tougher. I think being an aluminium block our thrust bearings are in the middle of the block where the early ones used to be at the rear saw those little details that I mean it's just not strong enough. As we saw last year at Bathurst when BJR got bogged in the sand they kept riding the clutch and eventually you run out of thrust bearing. So we thought that we'll try and make some better. We tested it in that one engine that's done 4,000 kilometers but we'll put that one part away today. Then we'll just go back to the old bearings for now and deal with that and find something that's better but that's just doing it tough. Now we're going to have a transport of parades Darwin. That sounds cool. Yeah that supercars return to North Queensland and they'll kick off the annual NCI transport of parades. This is from supercars.com. Supercars return to North Queensland in 2024. We'll kick off with the annual NCI transporter parade on Wednesday the 3rd of July. When transporters carry more than 25 million dollars worth of supercars we'll make their way to the circuit through the streets of Townsville.
