you're listening to a one FM podcast books, books, books all around books, books, the knowledge of bounds, the wisdom you seek shall surely be found with books, books, books all around. Ladies and gentlemen, joining Plemo at this time on one FM, Golden Valley Library's program coordinator, Bronwyn Cole. Good morning Bronwyn, how are you? I'm good, it's nice and warm in the studio once again and I appreciate that. Yes, that's okay and that's one thing I do know how to do is turn the heater on. Now as I've said to the listeners earlier today, I don't have my glasses so you could be leading the blind through today. Now I was going to ask you something but now I've forgotten, oh folks she's scared the crap out of me. I was in here in the studio doing my thing and I turned around and she was in the studio, thought I'd seen a ghost, thought I had to ring Casper there for a moment. So how are you doing? You're doing good. There's lots going on because of school holidays or? There is, there is, for those that don't realise that school holidays in the libraries are jam-packed. Jam-packed? Free activities all around for the kids. We've got craft things, we've got Lego, we've got movies, we've got all sorts of things happen. Yep, we've also got some NAIDOC stuff happening as well there. We do, so for NAIDOC week we do, the kids activities have a NAIDOC week theme, some of them and we also have like a morning tea for the grown-ups and stuff like that. Grown-ups? Yeah well, us grown-ups, well sometimes. Now Kylie Orr, you'd like to speak about her, she's going to be in Nogambi on the, is it the 26th? She's actually due later this week so she's heading to locations, she's doing Nogambi on the 26th like you mentioned, 230 and Maroupena Library on Thursday the 27th, 230 again so you only have to remember one time but two different days for the two locations. Yep, who is she, what's she do, what's she about? This is Kylie's second book. So she's an author? She is an author, okay? She's an author. She's an author. Local or not local? Well look she's Victorian, so we'll include her. All right, well oh yeah there it is there, sorry I don't have my glasses, author Kylie Orr, yeah, sorry go, you go Bronwyn. It's in Great Big Bob that one. Yeah I know, I know, I know, they're talking about my glasses. All right so she writes like dark and twisty sort of stuff but things that everyday people could get stuck in the middle of. Okay. So in this case it's a mum who's the baby's got her exhausted, she just needs a break so she takes a night off, goes and stays at a motel. Okay this is getting scary. And a few things happen. And a few things happen. Now I don't want to give too much away but think dark twisty decision, serious decision making about whether or not you're going to to action at what you've seen. Okay. And potentially destroy your family. Okay so does she have a second child on the way the next day I guess? Oh I'm not saying anything. No. So that that was really dark so she stays at a hotel. Yep. And I'm not giving things away here. Let me finish. Events occur. Yep. That the reader will read about and it's how she gets through those. Yes but you're you're heading down slightly the right path but the book's called The Eleventh Floor. Okay. Because at one stage she takes a look out the window. All right okay. Okay have you read this? I haven't got to the end of it. You haven't got to the end of it. No so. Okay. But I've been to one of Kylie's talks before and that's why she's a really great speaker which is why I picked the book up. Yeah your face sort of says you're a little bit of a fan of Kylie. Would that be fair to say? Well look I get to listen to a lot of different authors so if they inspire me to read the book they're doing a good job. So if she's doing dark twisted novels even better have you? Yes. What's she like is she weirdo? No it's really strange because she because she writes normal people into these situations like a mum who is just exhausted. Yep. That's the part that she is. She's really not there but really nice and stuff like that and that her mind just creates these scenarios that. Yeah okay. I'd hate to be her partner. Oh. You were going to do this to me as he's reading the novel? Well I'm glad you wrote it down do you? So what can you expect when she's here? Like you've seen her speak before. She's a good speaker? Yeah yeah. So if you head into the session she'll talk about this book. So the 11th floor. She'll also talk about her previous book. Let me find the name of it. Have you read it? Not that one. No. Someone else's child. Someone else's child. Yeah so it's a similar situation in that it's an everyday person. Yeah. And a situation that could occur but then things twist around unexpectedly. Okay it's sounding like Jerry Springer like you are not the father. Yeah I don't know I can't compare to that. No. No Jerry Chance in the book. Yeah so when did you release that book or is it just released now? It's only been out for a few months. It's only been out for a few months. Where can you find that book at the library? So yeah we've got copies of if we've got north of visiting we've got copies in the library. Yeah. And you can also get it on something called Apple Books. So we push Burrow Box and Cloud Library because they're free. You can get it on Burrow Box and Cloud Library folks because they are free. Forget about Apple Books. You've heard it here first. Sorry did I make up for it there? No. Yeah. Okay now you've also got a musician coming into town. We do. It's very interesting. Instead of your your standard musician what we've got is a person who plays in an Afghani traditional musical instrument called a Rubab. Rubab. Please forgive me if I have mispronounced that. But the person is supposed to be a master of this instrument has been studying it for decades. Now the session will include another guest speaker that comes with the the performer walks you through the history of the Rubab the parts of the instrument and how it's played because it's played in several countries. But it played in different ways. I had no idea when I started looking into this because it looked to me like a kind of little guitar. Slash sitar. Yeah. Sometimes they pluck it, sometimes they play with a bow. It's just yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So it's a stringed instrument. It is a stringed instrument. Now there will will there be a bit of a performance going on there? There is. So he's going to perform and what they're describing as a not up and coming a bit new to the skill. So a younger person is going to play an instrument that the name escapes me. But it's a drum basically. It's a drum. I'm just looking here. Would that be the tabla? Oh see. You're reading it and I'm scared to say it. I'm zooming it up. So adding adding to the enchantment emerging artist Hubdulla Saab will accompany the Rubab with the rhythmic brilliance of the tabla. And that's a creating a harmonious effusion of traditional and contemporary Afghan music. So if it's I'm guessing it's a drum? Yeah. Yeah. It's two small drums together. Oh, so like bongo drums? No, they're hand drums. So I guess if you want to equate it to the same, I don't know that whether that's considered very PC. I don't know when you compare different instruments from different ethnicities. I don't know. Okay. We'll call it it's a percussion instrument. Is that better? Bongo drums, folks, bongo drums. So where's that taking place? So they're visiting. It is during the school holidays, but we're going for the evening so that anyone that's working can attend. So Thursday the 4th of July at 6 p.m. at the Shepherd and Library. 4th of July? Yes. 6 p.m. Shepherd and Library. Do you need to book? Look, it's always easier for us if we know you're coming because we can put enough chairs out. We don't turn people away. So don't if you haven't booked or you forgot to book or you heard about it on the day and didn't get a chance to book, you come down. But we do really appreciate if people let us know in advance. So just so we can get enough chairs out. Yeah. So just tell them Bronwyn sent you folks. It's as simple as that. And she'll be able to squeeze you in somewhere. Yeah, exactly. We're going to go to a sponsored ad break. We'll be back in just a moment. We're speaking to Bronwyn Cole from the Goulburn Valley Libraries 98.5 or 1 FM. You're listening to 98.51 FM live and local. I'm Plemma with me, Bronwyn Cole from GV Libraries. You are about to go on holidays, folks. You're going to need to keep them busy to wear off that energy. What better place to do it than in a warm library? Bronwyn, what have you got? Well, look, that warm space that you can't oversell it in the winter because when it's one of those days you've got the kids at home and you're going, it is way too cold or way too wet to take them to the park and burn off some energy, bring them down to the library. Bring them down to the library. Break havoc. Play cricket down at the library. Well, maybe not cricket, but people still imagine that libraries are quiet spaces. No, bring the kids down. No. And when we've got the kids' activities on there, definitely not quiet spaces. So if you go to the library you make a bit of noise. You're not going to get a frowning. Nope. Well, there you go. The Simpsons lied to me. They've been lying for a while now. Yeah, they've been truthful about some stuff as well unfortunately. Yeah, so kids' activities. Okay, so... Just off the top of your head. Yeah, just off the top of my head. I know we've got three different movies. I think one is the Lego Movie. We've got quite a few movies on over it because we share them around. Yeah. So the different branches play different movies. Okay. But suitable to bring the kids in for. So Lego Movie 1? Are you not sure? You're looking at me like I should know that sort of thing. Yeah, I know. You know, folks, I don't play much sport, but one of my favourite sports is catching people out live on air. And I'm going to get beaten up really, really soon. So, okay, so there's three movies. You're not sure on the date set, but they'll be on the website? Look, the best way to do this, because we share the activities around all of our branches. Yeah. And we've got lots of different activities. The best spot to go is our website. Which is? www.gvlibries.com.au super easy. Yeah. The other thing you can do, which sometimes is a more tangible thing for the kids to look through and the grown-ups, drop into one of the libraries. We have a booklet of school holiday activities. Yeah. And they can look at the pictures and work out if they want to make a shark, because one of the craft activities is a shark. Shark now. Or if they want to come in during night at week, there's clapstick dancing and stuff like that. So there's rock painting for night at quick. There's all sorts of things. Rock painting. They used to love painting a rock. And then you get the little the little, the googly eyeballs. No, not for the ears. No. No googly eyes for this. Sorry. Okay. Okay. I missed my pet rock. I don't know where it went. It just ran away with the other rocks. Look, it probably made friends with the other rocks. Yeah. Yeah. I think so. I miss your rock if you're listening. I miss you. So, okay. So talk to me about the shark. So craft activity. Paper shark. Paper shark. You can't actually eat your siblings with it. You can't. No. But you can chase them around the house. You can. Absolutely. Put it on the fridge. Yeah. Yeah. So, okay. And what else is going on there? Look, there's heaps of different craft options. Yeah. And I can't tell you which branch off the top of my head, because there's so many of them. Yeah. And so many of the other like school holiday stuff, telling you the time and the date and which activity is at which location we'd be here for the next week. You know what? We do have a couple of minutes to fill in. I'm going to type in. I'm going to test the theory. GV libraries. That's a, that's a, you know what? I can't, folks. I don't have my glasses. I can't really see anything. I brought it up. It's a great idea. Bronwyn's going, yes. It's awesome. Let's do this. Okay. So, now you've got somebody called Driscoll. But before we get to that, do you still do me crummy? Macaroni pictures? Is that still a thing? We haven't done that in a while. I'm quite sure somebody does. What about necklaces? Oh, yeah. We make necklaces all the time. Yeah. Adam, Adam, Adam, Macaroni. No, we do. We've got bead things. You can make your own beads out of paper. We do all sorts of things for jewelry. Okay. But I can't think that we've done macaroni ones in the last couple of years. Maybe it's time to bring it back. Bring back the macaroni. You know, ebbs and flows. We do, for the grownups, we do a lot of macrame, because that nearly came out of your mouth. Macaroni. And macrame is just very trendy at the moment. Is it really? Yeah. Really? So, you can like you can macrame a scarf? We've done a scarf. We've done... Poppy? What? A poppy. Like a little poppy flower. No. No. No, we've done like key rings and potholders and... Okay. Not like pop plant hanger things. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I made one of those in cubs. Okay. Yeah. Just thought I'd share that. I was a cub once wearing those pants that you pull up really tight and shunting yourself is absolutely horrible. Now, okay. So, you've got an author that's also coming next month. Is that right? Now, I wanted to give everyone a sneak preview into next month, which I usually wouldn't talk about until I come from my next visit. Now, this bloke knows how to write a book, doesn't it? Hey, does. He's up to his 60th book. 60th. How old is he? I didn't ask that. You didn't ask that. I'm assuming he's not a puppy if he's up to 60 books. Yeah. You'd nearly have to say, unless he started out of the womb, that it's probably more than one book a year. Look, I have met authors who are committed enough to get two books out of a year. Fair to go. I'm assuming he's going to be one of them. How long are his books? Oh, we're talking full serious novels. Okay. How long's a full serious novel? Well, I don't know. Here's the thing. Sometimes a slimmer book would be called a novella. A novella? Because it's not a good solid. You know, you can hold the door open with it sort of book. Okay. That's what happens with the books at the library, folks. Those doors are open. You look down, you'll find the latest edition. So sneak preview. And the name that you were stumbling over there, it's Gary Disha. Disha. Gary Disha. And his latest book that he's coming up to speak about is called Sanctuary. Sanctuary. Yep. Okay. See, I hear sanctuary and all I can think of is the walking dead because they had like a sanctuary. Yeah, no. No zombies in it. No zombies. No zombies. What's it about? So he's a nosy author, so he writes very Australian books. Yeah. In this case, for either the first time very rarely, the main character is female. Female. Yep. And I will let on. She's not an angel. She's a thief. Okay. And is trying to get away from things. She's trying to escape her past. Is that what you saw to say? Yeah, I think that's what I'm hinting at. Yeah. A lot of us blokes. A lot of us are nosy blokes. Love a bad girl. So this sounds pretty good. So you've read this book or currently reading? I'm currently reading. I've got three chapters left. Three chapters left. So are you looking forward to hitting those three chapters or have most of the answers come out? I look, it's at that point where you know there's a twist happening at the end. All right. So you're not flicking through to the back and looking for the page? Oh, no, no, no. I'm not one of them. No, no, no. Sorry to disappoint, not one of those people. So in a fortnight's time, if we remember, will you be able to tell us what happened? Well, I could, except that I'm not going to because all the readers out there might want to actually read it themselves and then come down and make Go ahead, did you? Or audio book. Oh, you know, that's what I... So I'm audio booking it. Yeah. You're audio booking it. Yeah. Audio booking it. Is that like a phrase? I don't know, but it is now. Hey, I audio book this good story the other day folks. It was a great read. Awesome. So when is he coming? Oh, oh, man. Now it's a Sunday one. It's on a Sunday. Sunday the 14th at 2 p.m. At 2 p.m. And 14th of July. So we're talking more than two weeks. Yeah. So a bit over two weeks. So we'll probably talk about Gary Disha. Disha. Disha again. Well, I want to thank you very much for coming in today because unless you want to keep going after the break, we're just about out of time. I think they might get a big upset if I don't go and do some work. Yeah. Yeah. Well, if somebody's got to open the library, it doesn't open itself. We're not at Hogwarts, folks. It doesn't. Well, thank you very much, Bronwyn, for braving the cold and coming in today. Thanks, heaps. Bronwyn Cole from Golbin Valley Libraries. You've been listening to a one FM podcast.
