Hi and welcome to the apprentice factory kayaboom district league show. This is a part of the super Saturday sports show that you can listen to as to keep up to date with all things happening around the kayaboom district league. This show airs on a weekly basis on a Saturday throughout winter and is hosted by Sam Saracito on one FM, Shepherd and Radio, so let's have a listen and see what they have got up to this week. One FM, 98.5 live and local sports, eases in a course, around 10 of the apprenticeship factory, KDL and I can't wait for today. All games on a Saturday and I've got Sam Saracino, the publicity officer of the league in the studio. How are you Sam? Morning Statsy, beautiful winters morning today here in the Golden Valley and should be a good day for football and nipple. In fact I've made my first mistake for this show, it's round 9 already. It was round 11 in the GV and it's round 7 somewhere else and it's round 9 of the KDL of course. I know this blokes an absolute superstar of Duke United, gold-kicking legend of course I speak and none other than Patty McMullen. How are you Pat? Yeah I'm good thanks, thank you for having me. Morning Patty thanks for taking some time out of us here, a big day for you, important day for your club as we spoke about off-air last night. How excited are you, game 200 for the club and we don't see too many milestones anymore as we know with footballer and nipple to one club player which is fantastic too. Yeah it's exciting, the Duke is pretty clubs like home to me so I've enjoyed my time since being out there in 2010 and yeah you play footy because obviously you love the game but you also love who you run out with and the people at the club so yeah that's what's kept me coming back year after year and yeah like I said it's just a good achievement and it's good to share it with their family and friends which is awesome. What have been some of your fondest memories out at the Duke United Football and Football Club? Oh there's been a few but yeah I think probably the best season we've probably had was I would say 2013, one of my really close mates, Matt Madison coached that year we, I think we predicted the pick to us I think finished second last and we ended up making a pre-link you know we didn't have any real superstars or anything like that but we just were you know well coached and we all brought in and yeah that was a really enjoyable year I think everyone probably had the season best years and yeah it tasted a bit of success which was nice so that was probably a highlight. Tell us Patty you've played, I reckon you'll correct me if I'm wrong but with Duke United I reckon in at least three different leagues, possibly four different leagues in that 200 games, what have been the differences? Yeah so yeah we started off in the Cole league and obviously then yeah a few years back sort of split from that with the whole AFL affiliation thing and found ourselves in the KD so yeah I guess the stand is pretty similar I would say from what I've seen there might have been maybe a bit of a dip in the bottom sides in the KD but I think even you know that's sort of been rectified a little bit this year there might be a bit of a gap between the maybe the top two but yeah I feel like going into most weeks I think where you know we're pretty competitive we're a bit of a developing side so you know there's not going to be too many easy games but yeah I think it's sort of even up around that middle the bottom sort of rungs yeah. Tell us where the football journey started because you said you went out to Duke in 2010 where did the football journey start? Yeah so I played I played my junior putty at Shep Bears so under 18 there and then first year at under 18 played in the reserves and we actually want to want to flag in the reserves that year then yeah it moved away to beauty for down in Melbourne so I played a couple of years down there and then came back to Shep then went overseas for a year they returned to Shep so those few stints away but yeah sort of returned to Shep and then at the end of the 2009 season after playing some seniors at Shep Tim Feltman who's he was a senior player at Shep there he's a dukie boy he went out and signed on his coach out of dukie and for the 2010 season and yeah sort of went out with him and you know another couple of mates and from there it's been dukie so that's a little bit of a little bit of pathway. Now obviously last year plate finals which was fabulous for the club. Have you seen this season to date so far we're at the halfway point as Stacey said round nine today we've obviously completed eight rounds. Now have you seen it so far for your club and where you currently see it? Yeah well I think at the start of the before the start of the season we knew that we'd lost a few boys and we sort of had looked at you know youth and we'd had previously you know a good underage side so we knew we had some you know good young talent coming up so we focused on that we knew that there was not going to be any easy game that's for sure and with a developing side I know you know wins were probably going to look as plentiful as last year but I think to our credit you know like I said I think every game was sort of you know being in it at some point last week was probably disappointing you know against Nurgen we probably you know fancy ourselves as trying to probably should have won that game but yeah those things happened but yeah previously you know we played the match the week before and a couple of goals down at half time the week before that it was a gamby and we jumped in early before sort of fading out and I guess that's that's been the challenge I guess so we sort of can put two good quarters together three good quarters and sort of have periods where we sort of fade out of the matches but again where you know we've got a fairly young list with a few old heads so that's to be expected I guess that's just a bit of a the learning curve so but I think yeah Andy who's coaching is doing a great job and yeah like I said we've got ourselves every shot to win today and obviously as a club how things going more broadly I mean obviously got plenty of girls playing a net ball at the club I believe you've got another 15 side don't have another 18 side this year and and how are your numbers on a you know what most people would say is the stronger of the two nights of Thursday and do you do your teas after you know football and their poor training out there yeah so yeah now during obviously we don't have an under 18 side we had previously we had a pretty strong under 18 sides are all pretty much all top age so it always makes it hard to you know so to go again for the following year but yeah we've got you know strong junior sides 15s 12s our ice kick numbers are really good so I don't know Chris Woodman and Peter O'Donnell put a paperwork in for the sort of junior development and that's looking really strong so that's I think a really good thing for our future net balls going really well good numbers at net ball yeah and Thursday night teas are always well attended and yeah there's a there's generally you know the functions that we have are always well attended there's the tight knit community and it's a family club so you know it's just as always a good atmosphere even though you know there's probably not as many wins in the seniors as we would like but you know that happens and you go through those cycles but as long as you've got that sort of strong base of supporters and volunteers and things like that which we do you know it always puts us in a in a good spot and hopefully we can build on it next year now Statsy we while we've got Patty Mullen from the dookie in order football net ball club and we were grateful for his time and we might have a look at each of the games and get Patty involved in giving us a tip for each game we'll go with dookie united and longwood first and of course dookie united or 11 spot the two wins this season and longwood in ten spot the three wins got to be a cracking game this yeah I think so Patty tell us what you're going to have to do well to win this game because longwood form after a bit of a slow start's been pretty good they've won their last three yeah yeah last year I know we they rolled us at home by a couple of points and it was a bit of a slog that day and what I took away from that is that they're very good with contested putty and you know in an under so that's going to be our challenge to match them I think with that and then I think if we can match them with that sort of contested putty I think we could our strength is probably getting on the outside and you know using our speed so I think that's where you know we can we'll have to do really well to you know sort of win the game today who do you like statsie it's going to be a hard one look Kyle taps got up forward for dookie united he's the mainstay forward kick goals for a lot of seasons course played Shepman swan's premiership side I think with him up forward dookie united could manufacture a win today I do note that they had a play out for longwood Jordan per salad kick five goals last week not playing today not sure what the reason is there but like what Patty said you've got the for most boys joy gets on the outside and Jordan the coach gets on the inside with that contested putty not to say that joy doesn't do that even but their roles are Jordan gets the contested and joy to the outside with that outside run who runs all day but I give him a chance we call to help Scott up for with the funder flip of the coin I'm going to go for longwood I think their forms been really good and I think the smaller ground at dookie will probably suit them let's have a look at the next one statsie Avenue in full spot the six wins his season host Merigam in a spot the three wins you saw Merigam firsthand patty last week do you give him a chance against Avenue because Avenue obviously suffered a bit of a reality check last week against merge yeah yeah look the credit Merigam played really well yeah and we just didn't allow it to get our game going so yeah they'll have to play they'll have to play their best putty probably too much Avenue but yeah I'd probably looked at Avenue bouncing back statsie you'd think Avenue with new all being very interested in this young play that they picked up from wallen Avenue Alex Crinko has been having a really good year kicked 20 odd goals I think he was an under 19 premiership player at wallen as well so he's been in the side to help out down in that forward line for Avenue you'd think Avenue would be too strong yeah I think Avenue will have too many weapons it got Alex Crinko Luke, Dylan Hoistard Braden of Ola, Jack Myers, Josh Delahay you know Josh Delaney sorry I mean I think they've just got a little bit more depth through their back third through their middle third and through their forward line so I think they win and we'll go to Gagari hosting Lancaster this looks like a bit of a Goliath job doesn't it for Gagari Gagari in 12 with the one win and Lancaster in second spot they've only had the course no losses but a draw all seven wins lying second going for free premiership's on end how do you see this one Patty yeah I can't see Lancaster dropping this one statsie I can't sack Miss Saron's in ripping form so much so I think it could be up there for the McNamara medal actually of course their best and fairest player at 2023 love Gagari Brian Dryden in the Ruxbean sensational forum this year gamble responsibly a dollar O1 for the best and fairest Gagari but I just think it's a bridge too far but yeah I think I think it will be I think they'll be competitive but I think Lancaster too many weapons down forward with McClay, Saronie, Paul Newman obviously in there so yeah I think Lancaster for me. Undear at one of my many old clubs and to say that but Undear in 14 spot without a win this season take on Mergeson to Lambert who on top seven and zero and one and of course it's been all about the Lloyd's particularly James on 69 goals he sees and ranked one in the competition. Yeah this is as you said a bit of a David V Galath battle Patty had he said this one guy and you saw Murch as you said a couple of weeks ago. Yeah yeah Murch obviously a really strong side we've got plenty of depth and yeah like you said the Lloyd boys and you know a few others that are pretty hard to stop when they get going so yeah I'd be tipping Murch but it's good to see you know Undear I would play them early on and yeah they were competitive enough they'll still give up a pretty good fight early on all of a sudden. Statsy? Yeah look you just think Mergeson to Lambert but a shout out to Riley Moon he's been having a crack at Undear of course for my route in the junior point to himself nearly out at Undear I. I think Murchon to Lambert too strong for me. Tally Garupner in fifth spot with the five and three record take on the Gambian six spot with the five and three record cracking game. This is one of those eight point games isn't it Patty? Yeah it should be a good game yeah played both those sides yeah had Tally early on the season and yeah they're pretty dangerous off the half back and they plenty of run and that's how they like to play and the Gambia are always fairly strong yeah they've got some good young talent that have come through their junior ranks and they sort of are well supported with some bigger bodies too so yeah it should be pretty close. I know a couple of weeks ago Patty when they played you guys I know that there was no Wilson no more one of the photogills didn't play bigs didn't play you know so Wilson didn't play so they've got all those blokes back and I think that just gives them that little bit of experience around some of those younger ones that they have been blood in in there. Mark Nolan is I believe back from overseas but he's not in today's 21 but I think Stacey you saw Tally first hand last week but I think yeah and again be for me. Yeah Patty hit it on the head though Dylan Butcher and Jesse Anderson Clark running off half back for Tally and Jesse can push up onto that wing as can Dylan as well but yeah they were brilliant last week Bren Ajo is sort of having a quiet middle period to the season after getting off to a red hot start to the season goal kicking lies for Tally but in the Gambia Blake Fobbergill 13 goals as a midfielder he's a goal kicking mid we know that premiership player Mark Wilson is just a weapon who's played out at Key Law Park in the EDFL so yeah I'm thinking the Gambia yeah I'm thinking the Gambia as well I just think that with those players they've got back and they've now started to settle that side and you know they've played at least a couple of games back so yeah I think the Gambia for me that's it. Stand open seven spot with the five wins these season three losses take on a valiant rush worth who are now got the three wins and five losses in nine spot. Did he give the Rushworth Tigers a chance here against Dan Ope? Yeah yeah look I think Rushworth's one of the better stories of the year obviously not having a start last year yeah we had them early on too and yeah that was you know really really competitive that got some good rock and good midfield so they're gonna have to stand up again and sort of perform to their best but it will be yeah they'll give it right up to them but yeah maybe they won't be just strong enough I don't think. You saw Rushworth last week's that's it do you give them a chance against Dan Ope? Because it's a stand up to low scoring team probably we saw that they struggled against Sheppies to break them down last week. Well the one thing that really impressed me with Rushworth is their midfield brigade. They sort of can't finish their work though up forward which is a slight concern but their midfield definitely get their hands on it through these Arnold boys that they picked up from White Hills in the off-sees and they're still very young players as well. If they can control the midfield they could probably starve the stand hope forward line but yeah look like I say they can't finish their work. Rushworth which is a bit unfortunate for them they'll get it in there at plenty of times and give themselves plenty of looks but it's just whether they can actually score a goal. I must congratulate Jack Young from stand up playing his 200th senior game today as well so good luck to Jack and yeah I think stand up have just got too much talent right throughout their playing list to drop this game given the importance of the fact that they're right in the mix to play fine. And they've got the old heads like O'Reilly and Emmett and those types and of course running around Chibina. Yep Adam Lovers and Daniel Marr and the rucks but good ties with Mackenzie's coming in the last couple of weeks and been a target down forward so I think yeah they've just got a little bit more depth. That's it for me. Next one and in the final game we're at Central Park today per Shepherd and East in third spot the seven and one record taking on Violet Town in third aim spot the one win and seven losses. Any chance for Violet Town? Patty? No well we haven't come up against Violet Town we've got him in the next few weeks but just studying on results and things like that I would say not. That's it give him any chance? They could win it don't make no mistake about it on any given day if they get to the grand final anything could happen but I would say at this stage that Shepherd and East is just way too strong. Yep big shout out to Matthew Randina who will play his first game of the season. He comes into the side Tommy Campbell having celebrated the 2014 premiership win with the swans last week they had a reunion he comes back into the side and they were giving Jamie Spencer and Sam Wood would have unavailable this week. I think Tommy Campbell was a 2010 premiership player you know. Yeah I reckon he was. Yeah I reckon he was. Yeah so a couple of good ins for Shepherd Easter good in for Violet Town but yeah I think the Eagles for me stats in now Patty McMullen thank you so much for taking some time out today to chat to us enjoy today hopefully it's a good day for you and your club and good luck for you today and also to your club for the rest of the season. Yeah thanks boys we're really appreciate it. That was Patty McMullen from the Dukie United Football Netball Club 200 soon you game today Stacey that's a fantastic achievement with that club to be able to achieve it. We might go to a break and then we'll have a look at the round of netball in the KDL the apprenticeship factory KDL of course Stacey round 9. And of course, we are on the netball courts now, Sammy and the first game up for decision is abadling six spot, the five wins taking on American in 11 spot, the two wins. Yeah, having all just doing what they need to do, Lou Richards has been very important for them. No, sorry, Lou Jones, and Maddie Richards has been very important for them and Ash Hanson obviously as well. So, yeah, look, Merigam, Brianna Barker was a baker, sorry, was really, really good for Merigam. But yeah, I think that Avidal got too much to play for and they should get the chocolates. Tookie and Ida have been having a better third to the season, if you will, after a slowly sort of start. They're in fifth spot with the six wins, take on Longwood in third aim spot, the one win. Yeah, look, Laura Henderson, their coach has got them humming now, as you said, probably slow start, but yeah, really starting to find their feet. Hailey Simmons through that midcourt's been important and Maddie Owens and Gemara Sullivan have been finishing off that really good work in that attacking third. So yeah, I think they'll be too strong for Longwood. Stonduki and Ida, they were runners up being 2022, 2019, made the prelim in 2023. Can they from fifth spot get into that final top three, maybe? Can't make another prelim at least grand final. Look, Laura's a colleague of mine and we've had a chat and the competition's tightened up. It is really, really strong. So it's probably going to come down to where you finish on the ladder, which I think is important. As we all know, Statsy, maybe not as important in netball as it is in football to finish in the top two, but I think you need to be in good form at that back end of the season. So I'm saying, yes, I can. Gagari in seventh spot, second on the ladder, take on Lancaster, top spot, eight and zero record, big game. Match of the round this afternoon, and this is going to be a ripper. I think this is the best attack versus the best offense. So it's going to be very, very intriguing to see how this plays out. That teams have got some fantastic players in every third of the court. I think it's a flip of the coin. I've actually gone for Gagari to inflict Lancaster's first defeat because they have the best defense, the Lancaster best attack. So as we all know, Statsy, premiership's win by teams that have got really strong defenses, and I'm going for Gagari in a thriller. Would it hurt Lancaster to have a loss, a Paul Keating loss, the loss you had to have? No, I don't think so, Statsy, because it's a lot of pressure to go through the season undefeated. I know Shep East did it last year, and then there'll be parallels to Shep it and East. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. So yeah, no, I don't think it'll hurt them. Undear in 12th spot with the one win this season. Take on Mergeson to Lamba in the 10th spot, two wins, five clubs would see this as a bit of an opportunity. Yeah, definitely. Look, I think Undira is starting to get some players back into that starting seven. Merges to Lamba have been very competitive in most games, even though they've only had the two wins. I think this is an opportunity for them to chalk up win number three. I think they have the ability to be able to put a score on the board, so I think the grasshoppers for me. Telly Grootner in nine spot, the three wins take on the Gambia in seven spot, the four wins. Yeah, huge game for both these clubs. Telly Grootner, as we know, premiers in 22, Gran Follis in 23, a powerhouse, a club, and again, be likewise powerhouse of a club. Must acknowledge Katie Sullivan played a milestone game last week, and it was great to see that they actually had a win. It was an important win because they had lost four in a row, so Christie Gleason would have been relieved that they got the win. I think that they probably have enough talent throughout the court. Chani Lords, obviously, in that attacking third, so I think that, yeah, they can get the job done over Telly today. Can hope in eight spot with four wins this season take on Rushworth in 14th spot with no wins. Three losses on the trot to start the season stand up, then they went four wins in a row and they had probably a bit of a reality check last week when they were beaten by the reigning premiers at Central Park, but I think they can get the Tigers today and get back on the winner's list. The final game is at Central Park on the netball court, Shepherd and East. Shepherd and East with the six wins this season and a forfeit as well in that winning forfeit that is. The third currently, fourth is Violet Town with the six and two record, dropped their last two Violet Town. It's got to say, Stacey, the Violet Town netball team started with six on the bounce. And look, without being disrespectful to them, they played against teams that they probably expected the win. Had some really good wins in there, though. They were pushed by Murch to Lambert, they played Telly Group, no, and it's a side that they've never beaten before, and they were able to win that game. Look, Colby Wild and Jay Wild through the midcourt, and Imogen Law will be important. But I think Shepherd really settled. I must acknowledge Tara Palmer playing a 250th club game for Shepherd East today in A-grade, so congratulations to Tara. Yeah, look, they're settled down back with Lauren Keedi or, as you know, Lauren James. You got Sarah Maskell, Claire Doherty, Bec Rendina was really good through the midcourt last week. Which, in Kate Durling, is playing as a shooter with Maddie Newey and Kara Paterson's coming out the wing attack. I just like the Eagles. I just think they're well balanced. They had that loss. They had to have early in the season when they were well beaten by Lancaster, but they've settled since then. And I think they'll have too much talent and depth for the Violet Town girls today, Stacey. I wrote this down. It's the Battle of the Defencey 3rds in this particular game. Like, what do you say, Katie Maskell on Doherty, Bec Rendina East, up against Wildburden and Allison? Gonna be a very interesting tactical game. Yeah, I think it will be, but I think that the Eagles should be able to get the chocolates in this one. That's it. That's it, Sammy. Thank you and enjoy your afternoon at Deakin Reserve. Yeah, I'll be at Deakin Reserve, watching Marookner and helping out the call team this afternoon. If you have enjoyed the show, then please let us know what you think at our socials.
