Episode 12 - Ethan Gilsdorf
(upbeat music) - I got the whiskey. - Let me have a drink here, whiskey. - Gonna get out of here. - My name's Ken and I clean Willie Nelson's under hole. - Under hole. - I know you don't agree, but I think he's the king of country. - Get the fuck out of here. (laughing) - Get out of my studio. - I'm scared. - No, hell no. - From the Ramona Radio Studios, it's the Travis Billy Ross Outlaw Country Show. (upbeat music) - All right, we're here. We're back. Happy Sunday. Two of the curbs. - Hey, hey, happy Sunday. - It is Sunday. - It is Sunday. We got a special guest with us. - It is Sunday. - Ethan, how are you my friend? - I'm doing well, how are you? - You good? - Good. - Oh, Eric, go forth also. - Thanks, thanks. - Hi. - Thanks. (laughing) - Just facilitating. - Thanks. - Thanks for saying hi to me, Travis. - Oh my God, you're so cool, it's Kiwi. - Well, hold on, we all got nicknames. If you watched our watch, listen to our last episode. We all got nicknames if we lost. What would Eric's nickname be? - Easting, and I just lost. I am not Travis Billy Ross. I am Travis. - Kiwi? - Kiwi. (laughing) - He forgot. We got to think of a good one for Eric. What would it be, Eric? - Yeah, if I was competing, which I can never do, because-- - Eric Billy Ross. - Eric Billy. - Eric, mile high. - Eric. - Go for it. - Eric, this has got to do something with airplanes, 'cause it's the last place. - That's why I said mile high. - Yeah, Eric. - Go forth. (laughing) - All right, dude, so we were-- - Is it that, like flying, right? - We were hanging out earlier today with Ethan. - What up, dude? - How you doing, man? - Welcome to the show. So we're, you're a dad, I'm a dad. Eric, you're a dad. Sweet curbs, you're not a dad, you're a mom. You're not even a mom, you don't like kids. I surprised you, I was like, surprise, I'm a dad. - I'll be like, what? - Oh, you better get out of here. - Secrets are coming out on the radio, just kidding. I'm not a parent at all. - No, give me even worse, you might say, hey, I'm a dad. - Oh, gosh. - That's what I said, what would you do, surprise? - I already know, I've been, anyway. - They hit the scars really well, huh? (laughing) - I'm getting out of here, dude. All right, dad jokes, sweet curbs, you got a dad joke, you want to tell? - Yeah, what happened to the rainbow that committed murder? - What am? - He went to prism, but it was a light sentence. (laughing) - All right, yeah, that was light. - He better get out of here. (laughing) - All right, Ethan, what do you got, dad joke? - Dad jokes, dad jokes, we got so many, and then when you put them in a spot, I cut them out. - Right. You got to come back to me, I got to tell you. - Okay. - All right, Eric. - Give us a dad joke, Eric. - What do you got, I know you got millions of them, you tell them to me a little frickin' time. - Yeah, how do you make them egg roll? - How do you make them egg roll? - How do you make an egg roll? - How? - You just push it. (laughing) - Dude, that dude. - Wait, wait, I don't like that you're in control 'cause you're a joke out of a bump bomb and mine got wah, wah, wah. - Oh, no, I came back a day, I came back a day to work. - All right. Why did the bicycle fall over? - Oh God, why? - It was too tired. - Oh, come on. - What do you call a dog with three legs? - Huh? - Skippy. - Skippy. - All right. - What do you do with a dog with no legs? You taking for a drag? (laughing) - Oh, stupid. (laughing) - The classic, what do you call a gal with one arm and one leg? - Huh. - Eileen. (laughing) - Go with dad jokes. - All right, Ethan. - Do you call a guy with the worms and no legs in the mailbox? (laughing) - What? - Bill. - Bill. Come on. - All right. - Jesus, all right, enough of the dad jokes. Ethan, how are you doing, man? - I'm doing good. - Yes, sir. - You got a couple songs you got recording right now? - Yeah, a couple, yeah. Yeah. - Cool. What are they? - Well, I got, you know, the original Devil's Laughing and then-- - That's such a great song. - That's a good one. - I know we got a cover of Wagon Wheel. That's a. - Yes, record. - Wait, you did a cover of Wagon Wheel? - Try there. - Oh, is it? This Devil's Laugh. - Oh, yeah. - No, that's Devil's Laugh. So I gotta get all the, all the this and that's straight with him. - Dude, yeah. - But the Wagon Wheel cover on Ramona Radio and then-- - Nice. - We'll do that and yeah, I got a few recording. I got a few originals. I really want to get recorded. I'd love to collaborate with you on. - Dude, for sure. - Yeah. - I'm down, man. Let's get together, dude. Like outside of the radio show. - Yeah, I got a bunch of stuff that I got. So I come from a very different world. I mean, I spent years and years doing punk rock and heavy metal, metal core and that whole early 2000s. I don't know if people are aware of the scene back then. But back in the early 2000s, there was a big wave of, they called it metal cores like Kill Switch Engage and Parkway Drive and it was like a, the new metal scene came. You kinda had that like rap metal thing going on and then that kind of went the wayside and then the late '99s and early 2000s, you had the metal core scene come up. Kill Switch Engage, they were like the godfathers of that, right? - Yeah. - You had a bunch of bands, it was like really catchy stuff, like a lot of hooks and it had a little bit of punk element in there and it was like punk and metal and this real hooky, real catchy stuff. And we caught that wave and I was a man called Beneath Lanced and we had a good run for about, I don't know, five or six years. - What kind of means, like metal? - Metal core, yeah. - Oh yeah, yeah. - Yeah. - I mean, Eric, you get online, you go find it. - Dude, how? - Like we had some cool tunes. We had some really cool tunes. We were kind of like a local name. - Yeah. - In Ramona, San Diego. - San Diego, yeah, yeah. I grew up down just up the hill from the stadium. - Oh okay. - Sara Mesa area. - Oh yeah. - And that's where I grew up. That's where my dad grew up. Like, I mean, I've had family in San Diego since like the 40s, my grandma grew up here. She remembers, she used to tell you stories about horseback riding down in Mission Valley. - Oh yeah. - My dad told me stories about horn fields, where the stadium is now. - Oh, that is cool. - Yeah. So yeah. - Dude, so like, you're kind of like, we're similar. Like, I played like 90s, like runs, like, you know, Nirvana, stuff like that. Like, what happened? How did you get into country? - We go back in the 90s, the grunge scene came. Like, we kind of weren't with it. Like, 'cause we were doing, you know, before that I was like, having Metallica and Slayer and all that stuff and the grunge scene came and I like some of it, like, Allison Chains, there was some cool stuff that, like, I mean, come on, you can't-- - Oh, do it, Allison Chains, like, come on. - Soundgarden, old Soundgarden, you can't mess with me. - Oh, good, yeah. - That's good stuff, but we just weren't really feeling it. So we kind of went the punk rock way, you know. Bad religion, Pennywise, that stuff was hopping, you know. Kind of like Michael, he was doing the punk rock thing. We were doing the punk rock thing and then the new metal thing kind of came and we weren't really feeling that. We were still on the punk rock thing and then the metal core thing came. And we're all about the metal core thing. - Yeah. - That was, those were good years, the early 2000s. I don't know what happened, man. So, I'll say that country was always kind of in my life. You know, I was a little kid, grandma, grandma. We always heard country kind of in the background and then my dad, my dad's a musician. My dad taught me to play music. I got brothers. - Did your dad play guitar? - Oh yeah, my dad is like a master guitarist, man. Yeah, incredible guitarist. And so we grew up listening to a lot of classic rock and that and whatnot, but later on in the 90s, my dad and my uncle, they kind of went, they went country, the 90s, you know, the 90s era of country. - They always do, friend. - You see, that's the thing, I've been country my entire life and I used to get made fun of so hard by people and now those some people are like, "Have you heard this new song?" I'm like, "Yes, girl, I've heard it." - And you know, the 90s era of country was, I mean, a glorious era, a four country. You know, I ain't the biggest Garth Brooks friend, but four reference, right? - Yeah, no, no, no. - But four reference. - Biggest country star of the 90s for sure. - That was, you know, Garth, George Strait. - Or even McIntyre, you were supposed to die. - Are you talking about, not the king of country, George Strait? - No, not the king of country, no. We can agree on that, God bless him. - Dude, all right, so let's talk about that. Like, who do you think, like, who's the king of country, like, not George Strait? You know that. - It is George Strait. - It is George Strait. - You think it is? - Yes, sir. - I mean, the only one you're gonna compete with is George Jones. - George Jones. - I mean, Bill. - He's been on the list, he's been mentioned a couple of times. - I mean, he's been mentioned a couple times, I mean, come on. - I just, you know, I don't know. - All right, who would your queen of country? - Queen. Queen B, country. - That's hard, that's hard. - I know that would be hard. I know a lot of people said Dolly, Dolly Parton. - Yeah. - I think that Dolly and Loretta Lynn have been the top two-- - Loretta Lynn, yeah. - Consistently mentioned. - I'm gonna go with Dolly. - Dolly, Dolly, I think so. - All day, yeah. - And then modern day, I mean, you can't miss with Loretta Labert. - That's true, Miranda's pretty cool. She's pretty cool, man. I don't love everything about it, but-- - But her music is good, I have her debut CD because I don't know if you guys know this. Miranda Lambert became famous on a show that was like American Idol, but for singer-songwriters and country, and it was called Nashville Star. And I don't even, I don't know if she, no, she didn't win a guy named Buddy Jewel won. - Okay. - But she had a song called Me and Charlie Talking, and it's still one of my most favorite songs. She's an amazing songwriter. - She is, and she's got a lot of stuff that doesn't hit the mainstream, that kind of goes the wayside, and then it's really cool shit, yeah. - Does she actually write her own stuff? - Oh, yeah, yeah. - That's what the show was. It was a cool songwriter, yeah. - That's actually cool, I love that. - They got a song that she does, it's called Old Shit. - Okay. - I mean, and it's solid. - No, I've heard it. - It's called Old Shit? - You wouldn't hear it. It's not got me on the radio. She's got a bunch of stuff that's not on the radio. - We could probably, we could play it on the station. Okay, let's talk about something, though, 'cause you said Miranda Langer. And this is not just at her, 'cause other artists have done this. What do you feel like, if you pay to go to a concert, she got mad at people for taking a selfie, and she called them out. They were in a box seat from the stage. I mean, if I paid $500 or whatever to be in box seats to come see you, and I'm having fun with my friends, I want to take a picture and be like, "Hey, we're having a good time." - Yeah, you can't be a nickel and diamonds. - You know, that's just musicians, man. - Nickel and diamonds, we're over here. - And I get it, like-- - And it was like a whole big thing. It was all over, like, we don't have TV, so we didn't watch the news, but Facebook. Like, all the news people were publishing about, you know? - And I feel like what a lot of people don't realize is the modern day of the music industry is artists, they don't make money off their songs no more, right? Like, they put out records, they put out albums, they put out songs, and the day after it comes out, you can just go get it online for free. - Yeah. - Yeah. - So, you know, when we were kids, you had to go buy a CD to go buy a CD to go buy a CD. - People made a lot of money off selling their albums, right? Even if, you know, you're getting a $1.50 album, but you sell 5 million albums, you know, you're making a lot of money. - Yeah, that was the thing when Napster and all that came out back in the day. - Yeah, so nobody's making money off their songs. - No, they're good. - So they're making money, what are they making money off? They're making money off touring. - Touring? - And merchandise. - And merchandise, yeah. - So that's why, you know, cost as much as you do, that's why a shirt costs $40 now. - Yeah. - Which it's not the cost, 'cause if you love an artist and want to support them, absolutely, it's just, I've paid this much money and now you're gonna yell at me. - Yeah, so I mean, for taking a picture. - I'm here, yeah. - What the hell? - I agree with you, you can't be nickel and diamond for selfies and things of the like. - Yeah, that's crazy. - No. - All right, so I want to hear one of Ethan's songs. - Yeah, let's hear it. - Yeah, let's hear it. - And that old shit by Miranda Lambert. - Sweet, we could, yeah, we got it. - Which is just kind of fun. - This is Ramona Radio, y'all. - And I am Travis. - If you're gonna play with Miranda Lambert, can we play two Miranda Lambert songs? - Kirby, whatever Kirby wants, Kirby gets. - I really like the song Me and Charlie talking, and that was like her first, like. - Me and Charlie talking. - Big song, yeah. - All right. - All right, we'll make that happen. - Let's do this, man, let's play some music. Ethan, you want to hear some tunes? - For FERC, Cirks. - Yeah, let's do it. - Let's do it. That first song that we just listened to, tell me about that song, dude. That was so freakin' cool. That was the song that Kirby referenced, and the first song I've ever heard. But the one before that, old shit. Yeah, your song. Yeah, your song. Yeah, the one that you wrote. This song, I wrote in a drunken evening. As we do. The best lyrics come out, I think, when you're a little shit face. Yeah, I mean. Yeah, it was just a song. I was like, what is country about? Yeah. And a lot of country about it. It's like bad luck and things that are no good having me. I mean, how many country songs are about sad shit, right? Yeah. So yeah, I mean, it wasn't-- That was a good song. It wasn't anything about specifically personal, but it was like a representation of this bad luck, right? You got your first, the first verse of heartbreak, woman leaving you, see your stuff on the her front porch, and this, that, and the other, and then second verses, you're with the buddy. We've been there, right? You got buddy talking shit to some people. You're in the middle of something, and then in your fault, and you're backing up your buddy, and then the last song's like, you know, bad luck gambling, and-- Yeah, yeah. It was just a song about bad luck. Yeah, that was a good tune, dude. I really did that. Yeah. Now, playing on Ramona Radio. I'm glad we played that dude. I know. That song by Ethan has been on since really early, the beginning of Ramona Radio. He was one of probably the first of all of that. Dude, I just heard it for the first time the other day at Palmer. He was probably one of the first five local artists. I mean, I might have heard it, but I thought it was like, you know, Ramona Radio plays like a lot of local musicians, but they, you know, we played a lot of mainstream stuff. I thought it was a mainstream song, dude. Like, I didn't know that that was you. That's a freaking killer. I am humbled. Man, dude, what are you drinking, dude? Is that Jim Beam? A root beer 99. A root beer 99. Is that a root beer 99? Yes, sir. You know they're serious when they break up. Well, shoot, let me get a sip of that. Come on. But you also have another bottle right there beside you. Is that Jim Beam? I didn't know you had a gentleman, Jack. That's ready. Oh, yeah, dude. I brought that for you. Man, I'm telling you, the studio, we have gentleman, Jack. I appreciate it. At all costs, but I do appreciate your plastic bottle of whiskey there of Jim Beam. I mean, you got a song about that right there. Plastic bottle of Jim Beam? Dude, let me see that thing. You know all about that. This is it right here. This is what I wrote my song about right here. This bottle right here. Plastic bottle of Jim Beam. Oh, God, I'm muddy. Subtle food. That is so cool. Well, yeah, so that song, you know, it was less about something personal and more about, you know, just some regular country music stuff and something like we all probably been through. Yeah, oh, yeah. Hell yeah. So, yeah, you know, we all been in the bar with the buddy that's been talking shit when you're supposed to in your backing of the bag. We all been in a place where like, I'm going to fix this and I ain't fixed it. Yeah. That's my friend, Nicole. She's a hot, tempered Italian. And every time we go out with her or I go out with her, I'm like, oh, please, no one say anything to offend her. I love her. She's crazy. And it's not like she doesn't like start fights out of nowhere, but it doesn't scare short fuse. Yeah. Like, yeah, if anything bothers, she's like, she's not afraid to say like, let me tell you something. Yeah. No. Like, literally we got. Cool. Out of the mall parking lot by a gentleman because he, in fact, ran a stop sign. Oh, God. Not ran a stop sign. She flipped him off. He pulled up beside her and told her you flipped me off again. I'm going to bust you in the mouth to which she put her middle finger inside of her mouth and looked at him and pulled it out and flipped him off again. And then he followed us on the freeway and I thought we were going to die. She's a, she's a beast though. She's crazy. I wouldn't be anywhere near worried if I was with that lady, like anywhere. Not for myself, but I'm like, there was another person in the car. She can only take on one person. I'm going to have to fight someone. She's, she's probably take off three people. And then sweet curves. It's not a fight. We all got, we all got a friend like that here in Ramana. I ain't going to say no names, but. Oh, I'll say your name because she's proud of it. She tells us. Sorry. You're talking about it. We got a friend here in Ramana who, who's happy to speak her mind. Oh, yes, we do. Oh, there's a video. I love him. I love him. I smile. I love him. I love him. Hey, Ethan, I'm going to open up this plastic bottle of whiskey. Please do. Go with that. I brought it for you. Oh, thank you. There's ice in that one. Oh, yeah. I'm going to drink some Jim Beam. You know, that song, and I've had people kind of misconstrued. I mean, so music is what, like, you perceive it how you want to perceive it. That's going to be your music. But I've had someone come at me with the chorus of that song that perceived it a different way than I wrote it, but, you know, bad luck is six back a bottle of whiskey and get to work. Yeah. You know, it's like, bad luck. Six back a bottle of whiskey. Let's get to work. Man. I'm trying to drown in the pain. So that was the chorus is about. That's cool, man. Heck yeah. That's one song. Yeah. Well, I'm drinking plastic bottles. Cheers. I'm drinking a plastic bottle of whipped 99, which I think is supposed to be whipped cream. But it, I mean, it's delicious. It tastes like, let me give you a jingle. Boozy vanilla frosting. Is that what it is? Well, I think it's whipped cream. It's supposed to be. But I mean, it's good. It's those stupid 99s. It tastes like whipped cream. No, it tastes like vanilla frosting. I reckon 99s start paying Ramona radio for advertising. Oh my God. That's good. Give it back. Wow. You know what that'd be good with? Just give me that shit back. Like Sprite. Be like cream soda. Yeah. That's right. That'd be good. You're a whipped cream 99 pan meal. Dude. It's actually good. Right? I don't like your negative energy. You've got it. Shall I pass the cup around, Eric? Do you want to sit? Yeah, dude. You ever done the root beer 99? Dude, what is that one? Have you had the root beer? I've had the root beer. Dude, I bet that would be good with the whiskey. You've got a limitation. All right. Let me try that. What is this? You know what's really good too? Have you had, it's called Not Your Dad's Root Beer? I had them all. Oh, yeah. And it's like Boozy Root Beer. But it's good. You're talking about the 99s. I had them all. Oh my God. That's good. That's good. That's good. What? Those stupid 90s are crazy. Why am I just now hearing about this? You're welcome. As if my addiction wasn't worse. We have a friend. Now, here we go. I got 99 bananas or whatever the shit is. We had a friend who had a birthday party and we literally dangled 99s all around a garage and everything. Oh, that's funny. And people had to put their hands behind their back and Bob or capture their 99s. Yeah. Did we went through like 200 of those 99s and one night? Dude. The 299s. That's a song, right? There are Ethan. 299s. Let's do it. Alright. Let's do it. I got a whole bunch. That's a confusing song. 200 bottles of 99 on the wall. 200, 99 bottles of beer on the wall. Wait. What are we doing? Oh my God. Dude, 180. Yeah, you're lost. Can't even remember words. This is the California limit for liquor that they can sell here. Oh, the amount of alcohol and like, like, like, moonshine, like, yeah, the whole pure alcohol is what 200. No, I'm saying, but like, so ever clear. You can get ever clear in Arizona. You can get ever clear here. Yeah. Ever clear in Arizona is legit. It's different. Yeah. So what is that? I don't know. What is the telephone? ABV that caps out. Maybe the sweet curbs. I know you can get 151, which is wrong, right? But it's 151. Yeah. That's funny. I remember doing, so I bartended for a long time ago. I bartended a long time ago when I was younger. Anyway, I remember taking 151, the rum, and I would put in my, I would take like a, like, a catful and I would hold the lighter up and hold it and go, and blow a fire. Oh, yeah. 60% ABV is the max allowed in California. California prohibits the sale of beverages greater than 60% ABV. Damn, that's more than half. That's crazy, dude. Hey, Ethan, have you ever had outlaw barbecue? Uh-huh. You have? Yeah. It is absolutely amazing. I tell you, man. The guy knows how to smoke. Oh, yeah. No. Yeah. Dean is a great guy and he makes a goddamn good barbecue. Dude. Yes, he does. We were at Red Wising Brews one night and he had some sausage there. Yeah. And it was sausage from a pig. He done shot himself. Yeah. Yeah. He has a lot of his own gaming. Yeah. Yep. So he done shot the pig in Texas. The guy goes on, like, hunting trips. Made the sausage himself. Makes it himself, dude. So good. Absolutely. He is a master of his craft. Yeah. Yeah. Dude, outlaw barbecue man, I'm telling you. If you got any events, dude, if you got any things going on outside, I think we're probably going to have a big old party. Probably here at-- How do you think it would be cool for Monastudio? We're going to do a big studio. Fuck it. [LAUGHTER] What's the mean watching party? No, dude. We are going to have a big party here at the Mona Radio. Oh, come on. Come on. [LAUGHTER] Shoot it down. Whatever, dude. We're going to have a party. The brisket, the sausage, the chicken, everything he does is amazing. Yeah, dude. And what a guy, man. What a nice guy. Super cool dude. You know. Yeah. The way he goes about, you know, the way he goes about his customers is awesome. You know, he's a good down home guy. Oh, yeah. I watched him. I'm a really good man. Not everyone knows he's cash only. So people show up and he's like, give me next time. He's a good guy. He's a good guy. He's a good guy. Very good honor system, dude. That's why I love that guy, dude. Word gets out. What about to say for a moment? Because once word gets out, he's going to go, you dick. I don't know why you said that. But what I love about him, he's like, I don't do change. You get your own change. Right. Yeah. Don't contaminate my hands. He's a one man deal, dude. He's a one man deal. He's wearing gloves, you know. And he doesn't want to do it and handle money. Like, I understand. Perfect. I understand that. It's fucking awesome. It's a pain. What do you have to do with gloves off every time? A lot of people don't talk to Dean. There was a day he was a bassist and a punk rock band playing black flag covers and he had a mohawk. Really? Yeah. Oh, yeah. He didn't know that. Dean, we're going to need to see these folks out. He had a mohawk. He had a mohawk, yeah. We're going to have Dean on here. What do you get? He's a good guy. He's the best. Yeah, I do. We love Dean Killer. And his food is amazing. Okay. That bourbon honey on bread is going to die for. Yeah, dude. That's one of my favorites. I get that every time. Yeah. So good. Heck, yeah. All right. Let's play a song. Yeah, dude. Let's play some songs. But, man, I got to tell you this plastic bottle whiskey spray. Got it. I know. You guys are going to start like having discussions about 99s. It cracks me up these 99s. Dude, seriously. These 99s. They ain't pretty, but it's where you want to go. How much do they cost? It tastes like rupee. It depends on where you go. What are they like? A dollar? Two dollars. A dollar. So many. 99 for 99. No. No. No. No. No. No. Go to country one spirit. That's right. I'm never coming back to these chains, chains, shackles, and chains, no matter what it takes today. I'm going to break these chains, chains, shackles, and chains, and love taking heart, breaking cold heart, longing, making chains. You never try to hold me till you see me walking out. I guess you'd rather be with me than ever be without. You call me back and kiss me and my heart begins to sing. When I know that all you're doing is taking on all the things that you're doing. You never try to hold me till you see me walking out. I guess you'd rather be with me than ever be without. You call me back and kiss me and my heart begins to sing. When I know that all you're doing is taking on all the things that you're doing. You never try to hold me till you see me walking out. I guess you'd rather be with me than ever be without. You call me back and kiss me and my heart begins to sing. I guess you'd rather be with me than ever be without. You call me back and kiss me and my heart begins to sing. When I know that all you're doing is taking on all the things that you're doing. I guess you'd rather be with me than ever be without. You call me back and kiss me and my heart begins to sing. [music] I volunteer for the Army on my birthday. [music] The dress of wine, dress, first dress real away. [music] I turn to the duty in Vietnam. [music] I came home with a brand new play. [music] I take the seat for Columbia, Mexico. [music] I just put it up a hot or down copper headroom. [music] I'm out of heat, it's got a chopper in it. We've got a string, but like a back over there. I turn the things in from Charlie, don't you know. You better stay away from copper headroom. [music] [music] The chopper headroom. [music] The chopper headroom. [music] The chopper headroom. [music] [music] They got a Lady Picture 1951. [music] Full of my favorite records that I grew up on. [music] They got all Hank and lefty, and there's B24. [music] Set 'em up, go and play, walk in the floor. [music] Set 'em up, go and play, walk in the floor. [music] I'm gonna spend the night like every night before. [music] Lady T and I'll play in some more. [music] I gotta have a shot of them more true of our doors. [music] Yeah, set 'em up, go and play, walk in the floor. [music] Set 'em up, go and play, walk in the floor. [music] All my neon neighbors, they like what I play. [music] 'Cause they've heard it every night since you walked away. [music] Every day they replay, so B24. 'Cause every night I run a needle through, walk in the floor. [music] Every night I run a needle through, walk in the floor. [music] I gotta spend the night like every night before. [music] Lady T, I'm gonna play in some more. [music] I gotta have a shot of them more true of our doors. [music] Set 'em up, go and play, walk in the floor. [music] Set 'em up, go and play, walk in the floor. [music] I said set 'em up, go and play, walk in the floor. Set 'em up, go and play, walk in the floor. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Grandpa, everything has changed and passed. We call the progress, but I just don't know. [music] And Grandpa is wandered back into the past. Then paint me a picture of long ago. Lovers really fall in love to stay. Stand beside each other called what made. Promise really some people kept, not just something they would say. Then fall against. Families really bow their heads to pray. Daddy's really never go away. Oh, oh, Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days. Oh, oh, oh, Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days. [music] [music] [music] Man, I love that song. That was the Juds. What a good song, man. And the song before that was Vern Gaughton. Set him up, Joe. It was a good song. Set him up, Joe. You know, Jamie Johnson. He does a great version. Honestly, I don't know which one I like best. I love Jamie Johnson. Dude, big fan of Jamie Johnson. Talk about, you know, the sound of country music. Yeah. Jamie Johnson's the guy. I love Jamie Johnson. I'm telling you, man. Like, that guy, he wrote a lot of songs. And I like Jamie Johnson because he's not commercial or he's not bought by anyone. He looks like a mountain man, if you just see him. You never think he could sing or play like he does. Yeah, he's great. He's pretty as he used to be. No, I know, right? [laughter] No, he isn't. I may do it. Have you seen him? He's got long hair. We're going to go. Long beard. Yeah. Yeah. It's like a modern day David Enko. Yeah. For sure. Yeah. I mean, yeah. But dude, I'm telling you, Jamie Johnson, dude, he wrote, he's written a lot of songs. Oh, so many good songs. Made famous by, like, George Strait. Like, what's that song that, uh... Oh. Yeah, give it away the one you guys do. Yeah, give it away. Yeah. Yeah. Jamie Johnson wrote that song. Really? Yeah. And then... He's written a lot of songs that... Oh, yeah. No, he's... He's seen people made really famous. It's crazy, too, like, Chris Stapleton. He's done that, too. He wrote a lot of songs that other people do. Oh, yeah. And made famous, you know. Oh, yeah. Who the hell was that? Chris, he did a bunch of stuff behind the scenes before he even blew up with, uh, was a song. That's, uh, in my opinion that... That's a far away, far away kind of... A far away. Put him on the map. Yeah. I really like, uh, so I was riding home one day, and I just... I still do, but I was riding my motorcycle home, and I have a, uh, Bluetooth helmet. You know, I can listen to music while I'm riding. And, uh, I heard that Chris Stapleton's, uh, Stapleton's song. Um... Wow, what the hell was the name of the song? Good ass song. Yeah, we drove all night. Billions, Montana. Oh, yeah. You know what I'm talking about? The Devil Name Music. Devil Name Music, yeah. The Devil Name Music. That's what it was. So I'm riding home, and I'm listening to that. I'm like, "Who is this?" He's so good. I couldn't tell who it was. I thought it was, like, Stevie Ray Vaughan, or somebody like, you know, with that voice. Is there nobody like him? Yeah, dude. I was like, "Who is this?" And then I finally got home, and I was like, I went on my phone 'cause I was listening to, like, Pandora or whatever it was, and I, like, scrolled back. Oh, dude, this song right here. He's so good. The steel drivers, too. Oh, yeah. The steel drivers. One side of the mountain. Yeah. Such a good song. Dude, this song. I was riding my Harley on my way home, listening to this. I'm like, "Who is this? Who is this?" Oh, yeah. He's somehow. Dude. Incredible, man. Incredible. Oh. What do you think about, like, writing songs and, like, having somebody else, like, sing them or perform them or... I think it's humbling, man. I love it. Oh, yeah, man. I mean, I think the world of songwriting is all over the place, right? I mean, especially in the professional world that we look to that we ain't got nothing to do with, right? Yeah. Especially in the world of country music from way back in the day, right? I mean, you got, like, the Tennessee sound and, I mean, that goes back to the '50s. Yeah. There's always been people that are songwriters, and then there's, you know, vocalists and people that are amazing over they do. Yeah. But maybe they can't write songs. Right. Yeah. So you've always had, you know, a world in the industry, especially in, like, the whole Tennessee sound. You know, you got people that are producers and songwriters, and they do these things, and then you've got amazing artists that can sing and play amazingly. But maybe they can't write. Right. Yeah. So I mean, that's just been the industry for years. Yeah. That's always been the way. Yeah. Somebody writes a song, and then, like, you know, like, I can write a song. Yeah. You're like, oh, I can't sing this song. So if any-- This is supposed to be performed by, you know, a woman or-- I mean, there's-- Not me, somebody else. You got someone that can write amazing songs, but they can't sing them to save their life. Right. Yeah. So, you know, you write these songs, you give them someone that can sing them. I'll tell you what, there's a podcast out there. It's called "Cocaine and Rhinestones." So it's produced by a man named Tyler. He's actually-- Tyler Allen Coe. He's David Allen Coe's son. Oh, no way. So he dropped out of school in his 14. Wow. That's fucking cool. He dropped out of school in his 14 and went on tour with David Allen Coe for years. Yeah. So he's got-- I mean, this guy knows old-school country music. I could imagine, yeah. And he's got a podcast called "Cocaine and Rhinestones." And it's a podcast about country music in the 20th century. Yeah. And he-- I mean, it's amazing, man. It's something else. It's something else. He talks about, like, the JUDS. He talks about Ernest Tubbs, Everly Brothers. Like, I mean, he goes down the rabbit hole. If anyone's ever interested in learning about the depth of some country music in the 20th century-- sorry, he's the guy, man. It's wild. It's wild. I mean, some of it's a little overwhelming. Yeah. Like, I mean, there's some dark places in country music where it ain't pretty business. This is dark places everywhere. It's great fun, guys. If anyone's interested in learning about the history of country music in the 20th century, go listen to that podcast, "Cocaine and Rhinestones." Yeah. It's pretty cool, man. Pretty cool. Well, shoot, man. I'm going to tell you what. This whiskey that I'm drinking right now, it's pretty decent. It's Jim Beam. Your plastic bottle. The bourbon plastic bottle whiskey. It's good, dude. I am going to-- have you ever had gentleman Jack? Yes, sir. Yeah. I got some. You want some? Yeah, I got some. Yeah. I got some. I got some. We got kind of went aside. You were asking me about my story, and I told you about my metal and my punk rock. Oh, yeah, yeah. So the country music was always in my life. It was always there, and I always kind of listened to it. I honestly don't know what happened, man. I have a good buddy. He turned me out of Tyler Childers, when Tyler Childers was like, first come out. I was like, wow, man, that's awesome. Yeah. And I had already been listening to plenty of country music, and I knew about like Terrapak Troubadours, and I knew country music. Yeah. But it was just something weird. I don't know what happened, man. My buddy turned me out of Tyler Childers, and I love old Tyler Childers. Not so much the new stuff, but, yeah, I mean, I was, it was, it was, what's his big song? White House Rope? I was pickling. I was pickling. I was pickling. I was feathered Indians. feathered Indians. Yeah, that was a good one. And he, I would just start listening to that, and I started listening to that. Culture wall came out. Oh, yeah. Culture wall. I was just the one where that went. I just kind of went out the road. Yeah, the guy's good. Yeah. I don't know what happened, man. It took me. It took me. Hey, do you have ice in that cup right there? Let me grab that from you. Yes, sir. Yeah. Sweet curbs taking. Well, yeah, man. Yeah, dude. It just took me, and it got me more and more, and I'm a man that, who I am and how I live and my style and everything that is what I am really kind of is a reflection of the music I love. Yeah. Right. So as I became more and more and more enamored with country music, and the more I kind of just went down the rabbit hole with it and loved it and loved it and loved it and loved it. It just became more a part of me and it just became more a part of who I am, and it kind of, I started transitioning back in 2019. Made this way. So, I mean, yeah, it just, you know, like I said, who I am and how, how I read the stuff. So when did you come out? No, I'm just kidding. Yeah. No, exactly. It has a country music. It kind of was like that, man. Dude, I'm the same way, bro. The same thing. It was just like the more enamored with country music I became and the more love I felt for the genre of music and how much it meant to me and how much I immersed myself in it, and it just, it moved me to be a person that reflected that more and more and here I am. Now you're on to Travis Billy. Yeah. Sorry. My name is not Travis Billy Ross. No, what is your name? My name is Travis Kivy. Kivy. Kivy. Kivy. Yeah, man. Oh, yeah. Oh, it's not bullshit. You almost got a mark. It is. I almost got a mark. It is actually correct. Ethan, come on, man. I'm going to say, yeah, it's just like as country music became more of like my love. It just became more of a reflection of who I am and I just kind of gravitated more and more to it and here I am today. And here you are. Who would you say is your biggest country influence for your music? That's rough. Yeah, dude. Yeah, I mean, I'm going to say like all time, all time down, like some bitch is George Strait. George Strait. Yeah. Come on. I could still make Cheyenne. Oh, hey, dude. I could still make Cheyenne. I love George Strait. How long? I just don't think it's the game. A modern day. I love. I love Cody Johnson, man. Cody Johnson's good. Cody Johnson is like one of my heroes. Riley Green. I like Riley Green. I love Riley Green. He sings the Jody Messina a little remix song. Yeah, we do things different on here. I mean, he does a million songs. He's amazing to me. Riley Green. As far as modern country goes, Riley Green, Cody Johnson, my two maines, Randall King's pretty cool. Who do you not like, like, who would be, like, Luke, Brian? Luke, Brian. Oh, I love Luke Combs. I don't know. I don't like Luke. I don't like Luke. Probably don't like you. I'm not a big fan. I'm not a big fan. I'm not a big fan. I'm not a big fan. It's a big fan. Luke, I hate you. I'm not a big fan of, like, the pop country. Pop country. I agree. What's funny is I'll go back to that podcast I was telling you about. Through the history of country, man, like, I mean, from the '40s to now, there's always been this progression of a generation that raised country and then the next generation in something happens different and you've got this previous generation. That's not country. I don't like that. That's not country. So you've watched this. It's happened through the history of country music. It's always been, right? There was a time where it was like, you don't put, you don't, there's no drums in country music. You don't put drums in country music. Right? So you had this previous generation. Drums came into country music and you had this previous generation that's like, that's not country music. There's no drums in country. So there's always been this. It's generational thing. It happens in every genre of music, right? Yeah. It works for people that can see eye to eye. Did you just clap on that? I sure did. That's one of my favorite songs. Come on. Yes. Okay. Oh, man. So turn a halls apple a couple of weeks ago. God bless her. She's a man. She's cool. She's something special. Thank you. Yeah. I mean, so you've always had this world, like, you know, and I feel like it happens in every genre of music, like a generation, having someone do something new and like, oh, that's not this. That's not there. You know, but it's the same country music. It's always been. And again, I'm going to go back to this podcast. I would tell anyone and everyone that hears us to go listen to cocaine and rhinestones podcast because it's amazing, but you've got, you've got this, it's this thing that goes on like a generation of music, having something else comes out and they change a little bit and then you got the previous generation. That's not country music. Yeah. So it's something that's ongoing. But yeah, that's what it is, you know, but the pop stuff, you know, there's always been this correlation between pop music in the pop charts and country music and there's always been this correlation, country charts and the pop charts. I mean, you talk about like Bobbie Gentry, right? That song, huge on the pop charts, huge on the country chart. But like it's stuff like that, like Bobbie Gentry. You got a lot of song, Fancy. Yeah. Fancy. Fancy. Right. They hit the pop charts. Yeah. This whole thing in this world, country music versus pop music in this dichotomy, if you will, of like, that's not country music, you've got these charts and that. It's always gone on through the course of time in country music, but you like what you like, right? Hell yeah, dude. But I think that's fair. Like music can evolve just like, you evolved as an artist or really, you changed them. Thank you for hanging out with us today. Yeah, I appreciate it. Thanks for having me. Yeah, dude. That sounds like lyrics. No, what were you talking about? But as an artist, and I'm not really sure how to phrase it up, but Ethan is a songwriter. I mean, he has done some recording and he's done some singing, but he's a great songwriter. Oh, yeah, dude. And he was very adamant about teaming up with you as the singing portion. How does that relationship actually work? Honestly, like, I don't even know, man. Like, I write songs and I play songs. Well, so that that'll be kind of an interesting thing for both of you then. Yeah, because he's been really adamant about that for a while. I'm totally down. Like, dude, I'm a singer, man. I'd sing, like, that's what I do. Whether it be my song or somebody else's song, like, it's just what I do. I'm a singer and I play guitar. Yeah, I'm excited to hear what this entails, right? I love our band, you know, my band, Dirty Capetty, like, we're the funnest band I've ever played with. Because we could have anybody come up and just play a song. And my bass player, man, he's so freaking good. He is. He's a rock star. Doc. Doc is amazing. The funny part about Doc, though, is I love him. He's an amazing man. He's probably one of the best bass players, locally, at least, around Ramona. But he gets so in his own head, he's like, "Did that go OK last night?" I'm like, "Doc, no, it's fabulous." He beats himself out, and he's like, "Dude, you're crazy." Because I had never heard a negative word about Doc's playing. No, he's phenomenal. He's the best bass player I've ever heard in personal, like, in person, you know what I mean? Like, best bass player I've ever seen, ever heard anything like that. So when somebody comes up, like, let's say like, "Thea" or somebody, like, somebody comes up and they want to play a song. And he's like, "I don't know this song." He's like, "You know what, bro, it's an E." Because this is Kevin B. He's like, "OK." And then he figures it out on the fly, dude. It is so frickin' killer. He's the best. I think that's one of the things I've emptied for a long time about musicians is, like, I've seen you call out to your band and go, "Hey, it's in the key." Whatever. You know what I mean? E. Travis Mackenzie will appreciate this. Oh, Mackenzie, dude. Anytime he gets so not mad, like, it's a joke now. We gotta get him on this. He's a good Travis. Travis will give him a list of songs, and he'll learn them. And then Travis will throw in, like, four or five songs that weren't on the list. He's like, "Why wasn't that on the list, bro?" I'm like, "Too bad." And then he just yells, "I guess they're playing E. B. B." I love that so much. No, he's so talented. Man, I gotta get a shout out to Travis right now. So that's Travis Mackenzie. Travis, Travis Dahl, you're out there, too. And, dude, I'm gonna tell you what, man. Travis Mackenzie is one of the best guitarists I've met in person. Like, he's so good. He's so good. He needs to sing more, though, too. He does. Every time I hear him sing, I tell him you need to sing more. I agree. Yeah. He's so good, dude. Like, give him, like, a list of songs. Like, what am I doing? He's signing the note of the list. He is bad. He's so shy about his singing, but he's got a great voice. Yeah, he's killer, man. Killer. So do you think it's like one of those things where if you have a songwriter, you have a singer, and you have a musician? I don't even know if that's the right way to phrase it.
