Welcome to the One Life Podcast with Becca White. I am your host and this is episode 11, Anything and Everything. Martha Beck has stated, quote, "The way we do anything is the way we do everything," end quote. Her quote suggests that how one manages most situations, challenges, or other experiences in their life is a good indication of how they will handle almost all of the occurrences in their life. Do you agree with this statement or do you disagree? I spent this past weekend in Chicago watching my daughter compete in a basketball tournament. I love being a fan of my girl, but also I find it fascinating to watch each game as a microcosm of real life, with each participant bringing their unique talents, strengths, and weaknesses to the stage. From the players to the coaches to the referees and finishing with the fans, everyone has a part to play. Here's what I love about the game. We have dedicated young women using their intelligence, skill, body, and preparation to influence an outcome. We have coaches instructing, motivating, and encouraging players to influence an outcome. We have referees officiating, ideally, to keep the game fair by making sure everybody plays by the rules, hopefully to not influence an outcome. And then we have the fans and parents on the sidelines who are supporting their daughters in their pursuit of excellence, who think they have an influence on the outcome. I love the competition for the girls to test themselves and their hard work. There is immediate feedback from the refs, the coaches, and the scoreboard. Games can be healthy stress that gives a young woman invaluable experience and confidence in herself to influence outcomes on the court. And hopefully she will learn her own personal power, meaning her intelligence, her skill, her body, and her preparation that will eventually be able to influence outcomes that really matter in her life off the court. From this perspective, the score at the end of the game will signify who won and who lost. But the growth from playing the game is what is inspiring. I've got to share just one highlight. There is a player in our club who plays U17 and she will be a senior this coming year. Her sophomore year, she tore her ACL. This was a pretty significant injury and requires a year of rehab before coming back to play. So she sat out her sophomore year. Her junior year, she got back in it and she tore the ACL in her other knee. And so she had another year of sitting out and another year of rehab. This summer has been the first time she's played any basketball in a very long time. She's been through a lot of adversity and it has made her what I like to call a kind and compassionate competitor. She is not a starter. She doesn't score a lot of points. But every time she comes into the game, she makes an impact with her hustle plays, meaning she gets offensive rebounds. She gifts every loose ball. She is the team's hype man encouraging her teammates constantly. She makes her team better. Not only that, but I have seen the scroll off the court with her teammates and with the younger kids in the club. She greets everyone and talks with them. She creates a culture of belonging with everybody that she comes in contact with. From what I know of her publicly and privately, Martha Beck's wisdom is true of this young woman. The way she does anything is the way she does everything. She is truly an inspiration. So my invitation today is this identify one of your character strengths that shows up in every area of your life. For example, my sister is creative and she makes everything around her more beautiful. My mom communicates love and acceptance to everyone. My son knows how to have fun and knows how to help other people have fun, regardless of what he is doing. So again, the invitation, what is one of your positive character traits that touches anything and everything that you do? I also just want to leave you with this. You are a gift to those around you. What you bring is unique and needed. Today, my hope for you is that you may feel the impact of your influence and recognize that you are doing better than you think you are. And with that, I just want to remind us all that we only get one life. So let's make it our best.
