Genesis 27:1-5 KJV
1 And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
2 And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:
3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;
4 And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.
5 And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.

So we're now Here as we record this on season three um, episode 26 We're in Genesis 27 one through five and so if you were to go back like, you know 10 episodes it would be you know 10 parts earlier 20 episodes and so forth all that being said for the first For the last two seasons because the the first season was just kind of topical preaching But you'll see season two episode one is when we start And then we add 365 episodes there and now we're on season two and we're in the 26th episode Here of season two and we're in genesis 27. So if you just look it up, you can find it I always try to label every episode with the scripture that's included So you could do that and also too if you want to we're interested in a certain scripture You can see if we have that as well on our channel or on our podcast podcast Listing okay enough of that all right. So We're turning the page from genesis 26 to genesis 27 And we are immediately met with Isaac's decline. Isaac is getting old and we're immediately seeing that and we're getting right into kind of the second um Stealing from esol if you will the second theft as so eyes Jacob of course first he steals The birthright from esa for a bowl of soup because he saw was hungry And now he's gonna steal the blessing which is bestowed typically on the firstborn He's gonna steal the blessing from his father Isaac And so that's what we get into here and I know there are twins Jacob and esa But esa came out first and Jacob there was holding on to his heel He was coming out right right behind him And so he's technically the eldest and I say or Jacob is gonna steal it So Let's get to this. We're gonna look at the first five verses here And we'll spend say about three episodes just looking at these five verses I mean it came to pass that when Isaac was old and his eyes were dim So that he could not see he called he saw his eldest son and said unto him My son and he said unto him behold here am I and he said behold now I am old I know not the day of my death Now therefore take I pray thee thy weapons Thy quiver thy bow and go out to the field and take me some venison And make me savory meet such as I love and bring it to me that I may eat That my soul may be may bless thee before I die And Rebecca heard when Isaac spoke to esa his son and esa went to the field to hunt for venison and to bring it Okay, so here we have a very plain spoken chapter here not not Too hard to dig into at least these first five verses of genesis 27 Where we see that it starts with it came to pass that Isaac was old and his eyes were dim Right and so one thing that happens in old age often is your eyesight starts to go and now of course they have Laysick and all these other things and optometrists and so forth, but back then they didn't have any of that so All the sooner, you know And we see that he Isaac is in old age and so Uh in the old testament, you know, there really was a value put upon people that would live to a good old age Right? It was like a sign of god's blessing to live a long time, right? And if you're living for god, you could expect it and if not then watch out you can see this very clearly in uh the kings, you know Kings as well as first set chronicles and stuff you have these listings of these kings and uh the evil one oftentimes now there are some exceptions but typically The evil one will rule for three years or five years or 15 years and the good king will rule 40 years, you know And it's not always the case because I tried to make it that way one time. I said, oh, maybe it's always that no It's not God and his wisdom Does as he would do sovereignly And sometimes you need to have a bad king rule over a people for a longer time because they're that rebellious and they're being judged And all these and you know god's plan is coming about or god is raising up the next one or whatever So it's not always that way, but oftentimes you'll see The king rules a long time they follow god. They're you know, they're they were listening to god And he doesn't cut them off so to speak right like they're given Another way is like they're buried with their fathers. They're buried with the kings whereas if they're really bad They're not buried with the kings. They're just like left out there to die or given some poor man's grave That's another way that that the old testament Individuals looked at prosperity was a long life and where you were buried. Okay. So that being said isek is getting old And he's not sure what he's gonna die And he's calling out to esau presumably because he can't see him Right, which is going to become the opera operation here for rebecca isek's wife To insert jacob to get the blessing instead of esau And he said behold now. I am old. I know not the day of my death And so now what we're seeing here is that there's a time coming Soon that isek would die. Therefore, there's something that he had to do What we'll do is we'll take a break and we'll tackle what this thing isek had to do We come back from this break. So stay tuned Hey, it's break time around here. Thank you for listening to kjv cafe If you haven't already visit kjv cafe.com for more information So let's take a look here at this idea that that that Isek is getting old and age and he says look I have something I need to do I don't know when i'm gonna die, right So you need to go ahead make me some savory food And I can bless you before I die. So why is Isek saying that to esau? Why is it that this is something he has to do think of if you were old and age, right? And there was something that you felt you needed to do like some some business left undone, right? Um, maybe it was you never had done a will, right? Maybe it was Uh, you had, you know, someone you needed to apologize to maybe it was Uh, some other business that you had to take care of, right? Well, this is the type of thing that was burdening Isek there that he should bless esau before he dies He said, I don't know what i'm gonna die And he was thinking i'm guessing that if he died without giving this blessing he would be Uh, not fulfilling what god had called him to fulfill, right? Which almost begs the question why did he wait so long? But that's another thing And so here you have Esau he's saying Uh, and verse one of genesis 27 it came to pass that when Isaac was old his eyes were dim So that he could not see he called esau his eldest son, okay? So why does it say esau's eldest son? Because this blessing Goes to or is bestowed upon the eldest, right? And that is biblical and this deals with the birthright, okay? And if you want to go deep down a rabbit hole in the bible, you can read about the birthright i highly encourage it It's a fascinating study when you look at the birthright and that is the idea that The oldest the first born is entitled to more than the others because in the biblical sense or in the old time sense everyone to say The first born was the one that opened the womb the first born was the one that is the most like Vital and and and should be the most prosperous and all these things Okay, and so we get this part of this from deuteronomy 21 Starting it verse 15 and you know if you know the book of deuteronomy, we're dealing with god's laws, right? Okay, and again these were specifically to the israelites not new testament christians, right? But anyways, here we go back to this If a man have two wives one beloved and another hated and they have born him children Both the beloved and the hated and if the first born son be hers that was hated Then it shall be when he makeeth his sons to inherit that which he hath that he may not make the son of the beloved first born Before the son of the hated which is indeed the first born But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the first born by giving him a double portion of all that he hath For he is the beginning of his strength the right of the first born is his and so a lot here number one What a great way to give emphasis to this law by saying you married two women one of one of them You can't stand, right? Well, think about that, you know, if you love one and you hate the other, right? You love one woman you hate the other the one that you love if you really want to make her happy You know you would look to her child, right? And be like well, let me bless her child because that's going to make her happy But just because that's what you want to do or that's what you think you should do because you can't stand this other wife that you married God saying it doesn't matter, right? Because you shall acknowledge the first born, right? Because that one is indeed Factually objectively speaking the first one that was born And they deserve a double portion of all that you have for they are the beginning of your strength, right? This is their right. Okay, so Very fascinating there, but very true. It is something that they were to follow a tradition of custom law I really want to say it they are to do this It in this Deuteronomy 21 15 through 17 passage. It doesn't say Maybe you should do this or hopefully you'll do this It's if a man have two wives, right one beloved one hated And they have born him children both the beloved and the hated and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated Then it shall be when he make it his son sent her at that which he hath that he may not make the son of the blood firstborn Before the son of the hated which is indeed the firstborn it's saying this is how it is and notice also it's it's male, right? It's son. It's male. So there's also a focus on the male and there's a focus on this is doesn't matter Your scenario because God can give us one scenario that's kind of unique, but it then encompasses all scenarios, right? It could be that you have one wife, right? But you have you favor the younger over the older, right? The firstborn is still entitled it could be that you have five wives and you can't stand three, but you love two Doesn't matter the firstborn still entitled it could be that you have a wife in a conga Go on and on to any scenario, right? And the firstborn son is always the one entitled this is dealing with the birthright and again the concept of the firstborn Um is very rich throughout scripture Esau is this is the same concept where he sold his birthright. So I mentioned in the introduction This is the second time that Esau is duped, but it's still dealing with the same issue Because the blessing is given because of the birthright because if Esau was not the firstborn He wouldn't be entitled to the blessing Even if he's going to come back and be sad and upset and emotional Because he wants his dad to bless him because for some reason he thought that was good. It doesn't matter He's already sold the birthright and so the birthright as we see in scripture can be still us could be sold It could be sold. I don't think it could be stolen, but it could be sold Um I think in the tribe of rubin, we see that it can be taken away from god for s great sin Uh, we see the birthright All, you know mentioned throughout scripture Uh, you see it with joseph in the blessing, you know Which one is supposed to be blessed and the other one is blessed by jacob? So you see it actually repeat itself there And you see all of it leading up to this idea that jesus christ is the firstborn, right? He is the firstborn Uh of the age of christ of of salvation if you will because he fulfilled the law He is the only begotten son of god. So we're when we're born again, we're sons and daughters of god But he's the first and only begotten son like god gave him as a price is a very very heavy Consequential price to pay for the sin of all humanity for all time And the firstborn being jesus should lead us to an understanding That all honor and and praise is due to him right and it gives us this idea of the preeminence of christ Both in god's program and plan that christ is preeminent overall the firstborn But also uh in our hearts that he should be preeminent in our lives as in like how we live So if we say we're christians and we live like the world and we live in sin and we secretly hate god That we're not making him preeminent, are we so it deals with christ preeminence It deals with christ uh what he's given to us what god gave christ to us for it deals with salvation All of these things deals with a birthright that we see that isek there wants to bestow upon esau and he's saying, you know, let's work up a little bit of uh of comforting Warm moments through this delicious food you're going to go catch for me and uh, it's very fascinating again Why he couldn't just say i'm going to do it right now, you know And what this is and we'll get to this in the next two episodes What this is is man's ideas and god's providence and so for some reason Isaac had the idea Hey esau you need to go ahead and get me some good food before i'm going to bless you And god's providence is that esau would not receive the blessing because he sold off his birthright We'll get to all this and more in the next episodes to tune in then. Thank you for listening. Take care. God bless and amen Thanks for listening to kjv cafe and we'll see you at the cafe tomorrow
