Welcome to the Marshall Prout podcast in your week in sports cars episode after a busy weekend last weekend. Good old wackety wack, the world endurance championship in Brazil. Emsa weather tech sports car championship. First time I can recall Graham Goodwin, where LMP 2 was the feature headline class. Lots of racing. I promised on last week show that we would do a full listener Q and A episode. And I have lied and I apologize. Well, no, no, I'm going to dive in and I'm going to take the opposite teams about what it was. I did promise that I would do that Sunday to reach out for questions. I think as some, a lot of you will have read and seen it was not a standard week for me in Brazil. We'll talk a little bit about why in a moment my head was rather full with other other stuff. So I'm going to apologize. I did say that I would do that. I didn't. I'm away on a very brief kind of staycation here in the UK with my good lady wife after what was a really difficult week and weekend for us last week. I'm going to get through this as quick as I can because it has been a tricky one to talk about. But on arrival in Sao Paulo MP, and I know you know we've spoken about it, got the just heart-rending news that our beloved boy Oscar, the twist Kursky, the subject of one of my most beloved twist tunes had a heart-breaking diagnosis and I'm afraid actually put to sleep and I couldn't be there, which broke my heart and anybody that would have seen me I think on Thursday probably Friday as well in Sao Paulo will know that I was not my normal chatty self bursting to tears or a moment's notice. Two things to say he was the most amazingly positive part of my life and true to his life. For nearly six years you know a abused pet with his previous owners, a Brazilian drugs gang no less. He was the most remarkable boy that we all and anybody that met him that includes most of the DSC family this side of the part don't be just adored him. It's never good when you lose a pet but when you lose them so suddenly with their warning like that it is heartbreaking. The second thing to say is that I want to say a massive thank you to the hundreds and I mean hundreds of DSC readers, WCTV Watchers, Twist listeners that have reached out via various social media via email via various message services with your good wishes. I've read every single one of them. Trudy will read every single one of them when she feels able to do so she watches tell me she wants to but it's been a very tough few days so that is the reason why we didn't get to questions this week. We will get there next week and I think possibly the week after we've got a couple of weeks where I'm not traveling, a couple of exciting bits and pieces coming up that I'd be delighted to talk about and dig into on Twisk but from me and from my family it's a massive thank you to the community that supports this podcast and everything else that I and we do because trust me every single moment that was taken to respond to what I think most people recognize for any family is heartbreaking news just made it feel a little bit less crap. I think it's the way that I've actually put it and yeah I'll miss him when I'm in the office and recording Twisk when which was very often where he would be mainly because there's stacks in there. The only other news I'll pass on is we are talking about another dog. That'll be a while. It'll be after be the right boy or girl but he has left significantly more than a 35 kilo home in our lives. He was the absolute best and it wouldn't be a surprise to anybody that's been through this to tell you to you know that Trudy and I are just a little bit broken at the moment with good friends spending some time to talk about happy things and I'm happy to say in the home we're spending a weekend at the moment surrounded by love people we love and their dogs and that has been a massive part of the recovery curve so far. I can say we have absolutely loved Oscar and also knowing that hopefully is you're listening to this you are looking at the show tune which I don't know how many folks in the world can say that they have show tunes featuring a gorgeous husky in it but that indeed is who we're loving along with our crazy cats Rosie and Rocky attacking each other in the tune you see here but yeah we deal with cars and people and sport and all that stuff yes not a human being we've lost but good lord if there's any question as to how much beloved pet is like a member of the family like any other human being it's times like these where yeah we just feel yeah so so poorly for what's happened here but indeed good boy great pup love them and we're gonna talk about sports cars here time to say a big thank you to to the best sports hey you know since I think there might be a little bit less to cover off why don't we start with emsa at most sport uh not moss sport but most sport contraction of motorsport uh known since it's been sponsored and branded as Canadian Tire motorsport park did indeed have everything except for GTP last weekend some great results one of them not a surprise that being hard of racing winning the GTD class great breakthrough for the Corvette racing by Pratt Miller motorsport team with their new GT3 spec version of the Corvette C8 and the team obviously won lmp2 and won overall but for those in good old North America who didn't know him say hello to Tom Dilman holy cow right by no means a secret as to good how good Tom happens to be if you are outside of greater North America and I'm not seeing our dear listeners who are certainly insiders and interacts with sports car racing haven't been familiar with Tom's excellence but the vast majority of his success heck just the vast majority of his starts in sports cars certainly been more international than here in the US and Canada tell folks about him obviously the interpol slash uh Pier one math the same team yeah Pier one run by Bobby Ergal uh teammate there uh in the good old cockpit Nick Boulay certainly huge huge result for them but I just loved seeing that in a race where minus GTP so many of the P2 teams drafted in monsters from GTP right and I think was it one of the GTP beasts who came home first no I love that about this Tom Dilman again putting in yeoman's work to get this done well i mean you don't remember though Tom Dilman um you know a talent honed in the single-seaters uh been with us in sports cars on offer ever we won no doubt in my mind that the thing that gave him the additional edge to see off the likes of Pippa Durrani and Felipe Albacuk and the rest of the GPTP monsters was his time with the hypercar powerhouse that was Van Warke it was just I think the additional G forces and fear that that would have engendered in him um I think just gave him enough to push closer to the edge in LMP2 uh he would have been I'm sure all the way through his stints with PR1 medicine and interrupole his sense is finally home for the possibility the ever-present possibility is times in hypercar for a serious fire uh but the reality is he made it through with the uh the oracle 0-7 which seldom do catch fire that would have been unusual experience for him in his recent experience in the WC with the Van Warke team uh that uh the car did remain in the way in which he was constructed uh towards the end of the way and able to able to push right to the end without the assistance of marshals and a fire tender so the great i think great i mean tom what a lovely lovely guy he is um i can't you know what i'm sitting here now and emerging his broad smile at uh at breaking through with that race interrupole going from strength to strength here in europe and in asia with winds coming of course they are a lomon winning team for last year made the uh made second place this time again at this year taking their first overall lmp2 wind and lmp2 um in the asia lomon series and the european lomon series uh this year so cracking stuff from the the the racing bakers and PR1 medicine you know what we we talk a lot in europe mp about which are the the powerhouse teams that could have should have would have should be in hypercar i'd be quite surprised if PR1 medicine weren't on the solo list of those that people would like to see in gtb indeed i mean yall you mentioned some of the the monsters as well uh ringer vanda zanda included in there calling brown louis della tras people dorani uh yeah some real beast but as well if you look at the top three who do we have overall we have those who have you know really like we could throw in ben hanley as well in p4 but oh yeah these are drivers who by and large have applied their trade in the lmp2 lmp3 more in the frog on huffaker level but instead of this being a front loaded podium uh with gtp guest drivers i did appreciate the fact that yeah this was a little more the folks who uh are doing excellent work in this second tier prototype category more often than not and they indeed featured in the final results and looking in gtd pro wasn't just a casegram of corvette winning it was two in the yeah we'll also take second and by the way we only have two cars in gtb bro and they finished for a second so hey we're in pretty darn good shape but uh that this is something that you mentioned uh the mustangs obviously new car from must truly new car from mustang this year farther away as you noted here good for them to finish p4 uh last weekend highest results so they're getting closer but the corvettes definitely have felt like they've been knocking on that door of getting the first to win and it happened great for it to happen not so much as a of a shock i would say but good on them it's a weird thing because while we're seeing the corvettes i think they're better formed coming in the states as opposed to the last things i'm delighted to see the fourth place i gather how it's hitting while running in the podium positions much that race as well um but it's the opposite it's been the case here in europe and in the the wc with the the corvettes having single that place remember they set the first lm gt3 pole in katar in february uh but not really getting any results are not yet featured on the podium mustang have a mustang but in the mix as well but certainly since the fix was made for um the how can i put it the uh spontaneously disassembling um trunk lid and rear diffuser uh the sense that was done they've looked the proper package and they are finding speed uh whereas the corvettes in the wc with ts4 are still having those niggles we have one of them being one of three retirements in brazil but lm gt3 as a whole in the same way that gt d and gt pro have matured lm gt3 is beginning now to show signs that this could be something pretty special um in future years uh we've been an approving year this year in 2024 for lm gt3 but with baklaren scoring their first podium uh in the fiwc that means now that six of the nine lm gt3 marks so far have scored at least one podium this season remarkably Ferrari a one that hasn't together with as i say the corvettes and the lexus so all three have shown signs of real life so i'm certainly not going to count out that we might not be able to say at the end of the season with three races more to come we might not be able to say that it's not seven or eight by the end of the season uh but lm gt3 and gt gt pro in the states certainly well worth keeping an eye on and lots of exciting things going on there too is it worth kind of filling in before talking about Brazil about a couple of notable news stories this week yeah so first one uh congratulations to the newest hypercar factory direct driver melty yacobson yeah so melter confirm now the little dynamite Danish kid that's served this time and has been all the way up served this time i like how you but they're with you know there has been a jail like uh situation as being a reserve driver for kind of a propious uh yeah he's going to probably go with p3 is both both sides of the pond by the way uh lm p2 with race running form for cool racing uh he has been the nominated junior driver and reserve driver for pleasure total images now with the confirmation of the departure of nikamula at the end of this season and the smart money seems to have niko heading towards portra next year for some form of program not sure quite what yet the uh the out turn of that is that they've now confirmed that melty yacobson no age 20 from dem mark will be a fault factory driver for the 20-25 season in the perso 9x8 which by the way um pogo'd up and down the elida board uh bit of strategy but looked pretty convincing in terms of reliability again has begun to find a little bit not enough but a little bit of pace as well so great stuff delighted for that young man um i think he is mp a pretty special talent amen glad to see that obviously should also mention that uh nikamula heading off to what we think and unless i missed it but we do indeed think he might be uh driving a factory porker next year i believe based on what i read from the uh the keyboard that's been steaming from our guy steven kilby steaming steven kilby there we go i think we got a niknad for him uh yeah usually it's just his pension for eating a lot of beans but uh hopefully he's cut back on that with a uh wedding on the horizon but why don't we shift again this is not going to be a crazy long episode you're doing this and well you're doing this while on holiday um so appreciate that but also don't want to uh take too much uh of what's meant to be downtime for you tell us about wackety wack in a return to brazil and what looked like yet another interesting weekend and i say interesting mostly from the perspective of graham if we filter 2024 through what we saw last year on the debut in the top class at least for lmdh/hypercar formulas uh last year we knew that hypercars are always going to win this year we have indeed had some fun jumbling of that last year felt like you might not know exactly which hypercar was going to win but you knew which formula was going to come out ahead of the things i've been enjoying about this season along with the change over to the uh lmgt3 regulations is at least in the top category i don't feel like i know who's going to win from race to race and that is what i hope for an every race so tell us about how brazil plays in mega but the first thing to say is so to one okay it was the first win of the season for the brendon hartley said boy me ria harakawa uh totter it is totter's second win of the season after the sister car won in a rain affected emmala uh they won on pace it looked like they had to pace both of the cars had pace all the way through it um the other car frankly i think would have completed a one two whichever order had they not had a mid race uh better part of 90 second delay for replacing a faulty field pressure sensor um so all of a sudden they found the pace which appears to be i've been lacking for some of this season the most remarkable thing for me the most remarkable step that comes out from that mp it's not only the first win for that squad it's their first podium this season so for a team like totter kazoo racing that have dominated uh for the last two or three years uh for the sum total of podium finishes for totter kazoo racing what is this five races in to be three two wins and a second place is i think pretty remarkable the second thing to actually say about uh this effort is that it was i think once we got through the first hour it looked like totter the legs on absent everybody. Porsche in finishing second and third in this contest they were lucky i think that we had a late caution that didn't allow the charging sister totter to get back onto the podium um they most defend that off but Porsche seemed to be at this stage heading for massive title contention the other most remarkable step though is that five races five different cars have won those races both odors have taken a win you had a win of course at the mon from the number 50 uh Ferrari we've had a win for Porsche, Benwick motorsport, an overall win of course for her team jota so five cars four teams have taken at least one win this season that is a maturing uh hyperkart class with signs that others are beginning to join the show we have had moments where other cars have been in the mix i did say that Porsche albeit on a um switcharoo of uh of strategy ran as high as i think actually led a lap but hung on as high as second so we had a late caution at some point who knows what could have happened there they are slightly off the pace still but not dramatically so we see flashes of inspiration from BMW the alpine looks like it's pretty quick they they believe they've got their head around the mechanical problems they add at limon with that car so again that car appears to be coming there's every sign that things are heading in a direction MP that could make this era truly special and that's before we get to the other story that's been doing the rounds this week number of people getting spy shots of the new asta martin valcary alum h testing at both syleston and darlington you will not have long to wait before you see much better images of that car early next week it does look absolutely spectacular um and that's coming and then we get into the next layer of this and this is the bit that we're not going to talk about in depth there's more coming there's no doubt that there's more coming and there are exciting storylines to come that some of you think you know some of you think you know detail i can tell you that most of the the storylines that people think they know in detail they're going to have some surprises in store for but there is a huge amount of positivity quick word for our trip to brazil first time back there by the way um in a decade uh the track surface well let's call it mature brand new in 2014 it's approximately brand new plus 10 years with a few patches um critical points for f1 but plus like service in many places that caused all sorts of problems for all sorts of people we again though had 70 000 plus people paying to come and see the fiwc this uh this time out that again is good news we're beginning to get to the stage here no we are at the stage here where this feels like a proper world championship effort from everybody and that the massive majority of the events that we've had so far this season have felt like world championship events that people are coming in their droves to enjoy something at world championship level one quick little bit of indulgence here by the way i did in the wake of what has happened on thursday and i'd already arranged to meet up with one of our listeners one of our questioners you're any moat lassos from argentina sir it was an absolute pleasure to bring you into the pet the uh the the pit lane and to elements of the the pit carriages and the paddock as my guest and it was the delight to see you taking the pleasure and the access we're able to give you as a result of that thank you for your efforts in in making sure that we get high quality questions don't thank me again for my pitiful efforts and giving you 20 minutes of my time it was the delight to do so should also mention in our exact schedules can fluctuate a bit i know my next sports car race actually just confirmed about five minutes ago looking at we've been popping into my inboxes my next sporty car race will indeed be uh imps at road america and as you do and i do and others do do as well whenever uh if you're at the event come into the event and really love this stuff curious about the cars curious about whatever uh can always accommodate uh the schedule that might work best for you because sometimes again we have obligations that we're there working that's that's the key thing which i know going to a race uh for the ninety nine percent of the folks there that is uh an escape it's fun it's a break from normalcy um at least from monkeys like us we travel our work is done in a traveling capacity so when we're at the tracks although it's amazing we have the best jobs ever we are indeed at work and do have schedules and obligations we have to meet but between those if there are those of you who want to meet a team meet a driver look at a car do our best to accommodate reach out and ask uh this is something we have done for a while it tends to be more just folks thinking of it on their own or reaching out saying hey are you gonna be here and if so love to meet up and by the way think i could get to meet name the driver or look at the car so yeah again do our best to accommodate please uh please understand we're not always able to but if we can i would love to show you around and let you see things a little closer from the inside so uh awesome that you got to connect with john mo who's awesome and we do indeed appreciate his questions and your questions even though we haven't used any of them for a little bit so uh that i'd take the blame for that and no you're not taking any of that good win but no i don't i don't i don't know what i would say by the way in in reaction to what we're able to do with truly mo was uh thank you very much to our friend lev coarser who accommodated us to her sting jota got a good long look at the nine six three hyper cars and in particular to the guys and girls in the pits at you know i did auto sports because sure i know you know john mo did get to sit in at pocker lmgt3 car and it was a car that ended up on the podium indeed well you are officially in charge of saying farewell and i want you to say farewell to this episode because it means you can get back to being among friends in not being in work mode well thanks very much guys listen thanks to everybody uh if i continue to institute it to our complete errant nonsense on the subject of sports cars around the world it is an absolute highlighter almost all of my working weeks to do this and delighted that so many of you continue to join us let's say thank you to faff technologies to the justice brothers and to toronto motorsports.com and in particular to you my friend marshal perot your kindness you know times difficulty is always a massive boost and you know dodge me for one last time if i just say at the end of this episode good night the best boy of the lot love the boy love the boy and morning now but also can't wait because for those who have huskies we don't because i can barely stand listening to myself much less huskies talking all the time but do indeed look forward to learning about uh who the next member of the goodwin family might be and if it's uh another crazy husky that certainly wouldn't be a bad thing and we have a few ideas uh it will come but it will have to be very much the right dog because he was one special lad he really certainly wants he as i said in our um notice to our readers that he'd gone illies far more than a 35 kilo oh it's an absolute abyss so we're going to take our time and we're we're looking quietly slowly but it will be the right right dog and we will give a very special dog a very special home and he will be part of this community no doubt it's all about it [MUSIC PLAYING]
