(upbeat music) - Welcome to the Tell It Abs It Is podcast, your home for everything Colorado Avalanche. On the hockey podcast network, here's your hosts, Griffin Youngs and Christian Boulay. - Hello everybody, welcome back to another edition of the Tell It Abs It Is podcast on the hockey podcast network. I am Griffin Youngs joined by Christian Boulay. As always, if I had a nickel for every time in the last week that major American presidential news broke right before we hit the record button, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it is weird that it's happened twice now in the last week, but you're not here for that. You're here for hockey. So it's still the middle or the end of July at this point. - That's crazy to say. I can't believe July's over. It's been 20 days since free agency. It's been less than a week of college football being out, which I know matters a lot to both of us. Played a lot of that still recently, getting very close to a national championship as I'm sure a lot of you care about hearing me say. - Yeah, I'm on the road for a three P right now, but I'm also playing with Michigan. I didn't really have to be playing with Michigan. You have now. - Yeah. I didn't have to rebuild much. But yeah, like we're getting to the end of July. I go back to working for the school district here next week, which is crazy. The summer has just been flying by and thank God it has because we went through this week. It was like the sports solstice where after the all-star game on Tuesday, the end will be all swinging. There was no professional sports I think for like two or three days, which was weird. I was watching sports center and they were literally just like 30 minutes of it was just, can the Chiefs three P? And I was like, why are we doing this right now? - I was more interested in the ESPN. I saw all they were talking about was Bronny. - Yeah, that gets pretty bad too. Like it is, it was crazy. But we're getting closer and closer. Football season's almost back. I think training camps start this week. - Today. - Yep, today a lot of training camps start. And before we know it, it's gonna be September and NHL training camps are going to start. So we've made it through probably half of how boring the summer is when it comes to sports. - I think we got another month to get through. I mean, August is the worst month for sports 'cause no free agency, no nothing. Baseball is like, it's going, but it's not wrapping up anytime soon. Yeah, it's not even the playoffs yet. You're not that close to hockey or basketball starting. You got maybe a month till football really begins. - Yeah, but we got at least preseason NFL games, which are fun for like the first drive and then it's just background noise. - Yeah, like how fun is that really? Anytime I have football on my TV, I'm a happy camper. - Yeah, well, even still, it's like the end of August. - Right, right. But we're getting there day by day, we get closer and closer. This episode was a little bit delayed we're just starting the fresh week. I got crazy with work this week. There were beach volleyball championships. I had to do a racquetball tournament, which let me tell ya, I still don't understand how racquetball works. I'm watching these games and I'm like, I don't know what's going on here. So thank- - For these? - What? - No, I'm not a rep. - Okay, Chris had hope you know how the game works. - Yeah, I sit there and they report the scores to me. And I just am like the official scorekeeper. I don't know how racquetball works. What a crazy game to watch. It kicked ass. Like I think racquetball, like the best way to describe it is it's kind of like pickleball and kind of like tennis, but I still had no idea how the scores were working. There was one guy who just won every game. He just dominated and was the champion. But apologies for the delay. We'll be back this week. You'll be here in this episode on Monday and then we'll be recording again on Thursday to release either Thursday night or Friday morning. So we will be back ready to go, but we actually had some abs and news break. - I mean, break is a strong word, but like- - We have the potential for abs news to break. I think that's where we're at with it. - Yeah, it's just, it's July. There's nothing to talk about. So the second the abs come up in the news at all, it becomes interesting. And I wouldn't say as is any like new information that like we weren't expecting or anything, but old friend of the show, Jesse Montana reports a couple of days ago that sounds like the Miko Ranton in extension is close and should be done soon, expecting it to be long-term seven or eight years potentially. It's going to be eight, let's be real here. It's going to be as long as it can possibly be and it's going to be a lot of money too. - Yes, and I don't know why this is like, 'cause I do imagine when that news breaks, there will be probably about 15% of fans who aren't happy with this. - When is anyone ever going to be happy about anything? - I think everyone was genuinely happy when McKinnon signed and when MacArthur signed. - Right. - And Miko Ranton gets a lot of like, he's not a perfect player, like we can be honest. Miko Ranton, he drives me a little crazy sometimes just by his body language. Like if you had the same body language, I think throughout the entire like season and you'd just be like, "Oh, he's just, he's there." But there are moments where you look at Miko Ranton, you go, "He does not give a fuck about being out here." And that can be a little divisive, but the reality is he's coming off back 100 point seasons, scored 55 goals two years ago. He's one of, I think you comfortably say he's a top five winger in the NHL. You don't let guys like that walk out the door, sorry. - You don't. And again, what's this contract gonna come in around? Well, I can tell you, he's not gonna make more than McKinnon that much I can tell you definitively. And you look at some of the contracts that have been signed for wingers lately. David Posternock signed for 11.25, William Nylander signed for 11.5. Ranton is gonna get in that ballpark. And with the salary cap going up, I think he's gonna make more in Posternock, even though they have very, very similar numbers over the last three seasons, like almost virtually identical in terms of like goals and points and everything like that. And he's a better player than Nylander. So I think the maximum he gets is 12. I think that's, once you get above that, you start sweating a little bit. We're probably looking at him still probably being the highest paid winger. That's not unrealistic. - Not unrealistic, and that Posternock deal, like I know people are gonna be like, oh, he's not better than Posternock. Posternock just signed a very team friendly deal. - He's similar enough to Posternock that you can make the argument. - It's just Posternock signed a ridiculously team friendly deal, like that. Posternock could easily be making 12 and everyone would be like, yeah, that's about right. Like, he's that good of a player. Same thing with Miko. If he gets, I think he's gonna end up like 11.7, which would make him the highest paid winger in the league. I think that's where he ends up. It's about a $2.7 million increase from what he's making this year, which is not like Miko's making chum change. He was making 9.5 last year. Like it's still like pretty good bargain contract when you think about the point production and the type of player he is. So the only thing that bumps me out about this, getting done right now, we didn't get the Miko Rancin in contract year. Could you imagine how good he would have been this year if he was fighting for a contract? - Yeah, but wouldn't it be old in November when every goal he scores. So I was like, oh, he just got more expensive. And we'd just be talking about it all year. - Yeah, but those tweets would be very fun for the first like week. - Right, and like what's contract year Miko? Like 110 points, 120. - Yeah, crazy. Could you imagine if he got 120 points? - He's still gonna have over 100 points because he's one of the best players in the world. So I'd rather just save ourselves the headache. - Yeah, I agree. It's gonna be good that we get it done. I say that now as the contract's gonna hopefully be announced soon. I think if we had actually gotten that point, I'd be a little concerned and be like, 'cause it wouldn't just be that. It'd be, well, wait, do we have to trade Miko Rancin if he's gonna walk out the door? - Right, let's say this contract doesn't get signed by the time training camp or October rolls around. It's like, we were already doing the conversation with the Von Tays where it's like, okay, or do you have to trade 'em or do you keep 'em and go all in? I'm glad that got done in October. So we didn't have to do that for very long because we were already having the conversation like, okay, well, Brett Pesci's expiring. Do you trade him and for Pesci and get all this stuff back while you so you can still compete and build for the future, you just sign him. - Yeah, you're sorry Miko was happy camper. So it's gonna be, I'm very excited, it's gonna get done. I personally enjoy watching Miko Rancin and play. Is he frustrating sometimes? Yeah, but what player isn't frustrating sometimes? - Okay, you call a player frustrating and then you look at what he does. He's had back-to-back 100-point seasons and the season before he had 55 goals this year, he had 43, you look at his playoff production in his career. He's only had one playoff run below a point per game. That was his first one against Nashville. Ever since then, he's been above a point per game in every playoff run, even the last one, where it feels like Rancin and Hate was at an all-time high. He was still over a point per game in that run, frustrating at times, but still producing. And even in the cup run, where it's like, oh, Rancin doesn't look very good, get 25 points. - Yeah, and that was with like not scoring a goal and like the first two rounds that fell. - Yeah, he had five goals in the entire run. He had 20 assists. He was in a cyst per game, still in that cup run. And he had, so the exact numbers, he had 14 points in 11 games this run. And even in Seattle, a series we lost, he was the best player. He had seven goals and 10 points in seven games. Like he is the kind of player run. - Could you try again? - I have no idea what Siri's doing right now. - Did they not like that point? - No, I don't know, Siri just- - I'm sorry, Siri, do you have something to add to this conversation about? - I'm not sitting here and I'm like, what did you say? Do we even say anything remotely close to his Siri? But, and see, it doesn't even register that when it's my voice saying it. But yeah, you continue your point. He had seven goals and 10 points in the Seattle series. - And the Seattle series and obviously in the cup run, he had the five goals and 25 points. Like, continuing the point before I was so rudely interrupted by technology, thank you very much, Siri, is that Mico Ranton is frustrating, but you put up with it at times because when he is Mico Ranton in, there's no replacement for that. Okay, so you let him go. You let the potential $12 million, let's say it's end up being that walk out the door. - Okay. - You signed a bunch of guys, okay, you're probably a deeper team than you were, okay. Are you getting that production from even, let's say, those three players. You signed three players to $4 million. Are you getting 100 points out of those guys combined? Are you getting above a point per game in the playoffs out of those guys? When you're in this stage, it's obviously, the Maple Leafs, I think, have ruined it for everybody. Where people are now scared of signing players to big money. Where they don't want to give four guys above $10 million. And I've seen people wringing their hands about like, "Okay, well, they're going to do this. "They're obviously going to sign the car. "It's going to be the most expensive out of all three of them." Just because it hasn't worked for someone else doesn't mean it can't work at all, especially with a team that has already won. And the abs have done a good job at finding valuable players to target and fill out the rest of their lineup. I would much rather have Miko Rantinen and then find guys four value in the off-season, four cheap to fill out the rest of your roster. Because even with McKinnon getting a giant increase in money, they're still able to compete. Rantinen, even if he signs for 12, that's still less than $3 million in terms of an increase at the end of the day. And you still have two more years of the car before you have to worry about that contract going up as well. It's not ideal. If it was ideal, you'd be paying these guys like $2 million. You can just build it. - Yeah, that'd be sweet. - You can build a team of superstars around them, but that's just not how the salary cap world works. When you have good players like this, they have to get paid. And I know Rantinen's a frustrating player, and I'm not telling you you can't be frustrated at him. You absolutely can because there are times you are completely justified to be frustrated at him. But at the end of the day, your team's not gonna be better by not signing this guy. - 100%, I agree. It's, you don't let a top five winger in the league walk out the door for free. It's just, it's the way it is. He's one of the top five wingers in the league. You drafted him. He's been with the team the entire time. Franchise, single-season goals in a year, record holder. You don't let that guy walk out the door. - Right, so this is a guy who at the end of the day has already won a cup with you. And 27, still in his prime, still has a lot of good years. A hockey left, very good chance. There's no one's ever gonna wear 96 again for the Colorado Avalanche when his career's over. Like you don't let guys like this go. There's a real chance next year that Rantinen's gonna have 50 goals next year. He's gonna have over 100 points again for the third straight year. And when they get to the playoffs, good shot, he's probably gonna be over a point per game again. And you look at Rantinen's year last year, where, okay, he had 104 points, one less point than he did the year before in two less games. He had 13 less goals, okay. That's worthy of criticism. So you're telling me there's room for improvement. - Yeah. - For that guy. That's a horrifying thought. - Right, and it's just, I personally think we're gonna see Miko. - He's gonna be around 100 to 105 points for the next three to four years. He's gonna be playing alongside Nathan McKinnon. There's a potential to get back Gabriel Landerskog, which that's only gonna make that line deeper. And Jonathan Druen has proven that he's an elite playmaker. So you're playing with two elite playmakers and Nathan McKinnon and Jonathan Druen. There's a good chance the puck's getting in upon your stick with a really good chance to score goal. - And even if you're not playing with McKinnon, Ryan Johansson's not on your second line anymore. - Right. - He's a real stat now. - He's a real stat now. - In the playoffs, him and Ranton and were pretty solid together. - I said it even in the regular season. I really hope middle stat and Ranton and works because I think that's the final version of this team. Is splitting up Ranton and McKinnon. Also having Val back is an important piece of that puzzle. Not going into that rabbit hole today 'cause we've done that like five times. But him and middle stat together, I think is just a great combination together. Or you keep him with McKinnon. Oh no, right? Arne, you have options, you have options. - Yeah. - I do hope that middle stat and Ranton and work as well because it just makes your team better if you can spread the talk. 'Cause anyone who plays with McKinnon is going to get a boost. Anyone, 'cause he's just that good. Mika Ranton is a tier below Nathan McKinnon. And that's not a bad thing to say 'cause Nathan McKinnon is one of the spaces of the league and Mika Ranton is a superstar. Like it's like, damn. Like all our superstar has to play with Casey Middlestadt who a very good second line center where they can still produce together. - Right. - So, and it spreads out and here's what Bednar is going to do. If it's a pinch, you can be like, oh okay, I'll just throw out McKinnon, Ranton and Jiren. We know that works. Let's just do that for three shifts in a row and hopefully they create a chance. So, we're talking as if this contract's finalized. I do think something like this wouldn't get out if they weren't super close. - Right. And also, I love Jesse and this is not at all disparaging his report. It doesn't really change how I think anyone was thinking about this. I think we all thought it was close. - I had also kind of forgotten that he could sign a contract until Jesse figured that. - 'Cause also, who has signed an extension this offseason so far? I honestly don't remember anyone 'cause you know who hasn't, Sidney Crosby. He still hasn't signed one. So. - Oh God, I hope he signs it soon so that we can just put to bed all those rooms. I just hope it gets it over with. - 'Cause now it's already started to come up. I've seen on NHL Network he's like, "Is Crosby going to walk?" Now he's not. - No, he's not. They're just probably working out a way that he can get ownership of the team when he is. - Probably on vacation. - Yeah, he's like, "Yeah, I'm in Nova Scotia for the week." - Yeah, him and Kyle Doers are probably in like Cabo and Cancun, they're probably not working on a contract right now. - Yeah, no, but I really do think there's a way they're going to be like, "Okay Sid, when you retire, here's a way to get a vested opportunity to be a 10% owner of the team." - Yeah, here's the career path to turn you into Mario Lemieux and get you ownership of the team. - Yeah, that's probably where it's going to go. Yeah, I don't think there's been like, 'cause like, do you consider Sam Reinhart an extended? - Victor Hedman, Victor Hedman. - Yeah, Victor Hedman. What did he sign for? Was it eight million a year? - Oh, I've missed Cat friendly right now. So much. - Yeah, I think it was four at eight. This is what I think he signed for, which for Victor Hedman, I know he was getting older. That's a pretty good deal if that's the case. - I'm going to type this in and I got to find shit. This is awful. Yeah, he signed eight times four. - Eight times four. I mean, that's a good deal for Victor Hedman. - Yeah, for 33 year old, it'll take him at least 37, or I guess 38 to the kicks in next year. - I like that deal. What do you think my car is going to get? - Depends on what the salary cap's going to be. - Yeah. - It's probably going to be close to the maximum. He's probably... - Do you think he makes more than McKinnon? - Oh yeah, 100% he's making more McKinnon. 100% he's making more McKinnon. It's the question of how much more is he going to make than McKinnon? - Interesting. - Not that he's like, I'm not going to say all my cars more, but the salary cap in three seasons or even the two extension eligible is going to be a lot higher than it was when McKinnon signed that deal. I'm probably thinking in the range of like 14 plus. 'Cause you have to remember, McDavid's going to sign by that point. And so it's going to be set. - Yeah, no, I completely agree. Like Kale McCarr is the best defense on playing earth. But I wonder if he's just like such a team player that he's like, I can't make more than Nathan McKinnon. I wonder if he is that guy. 'Cause he took a bargain on this last contract. Like he's making what, 9.5? - He's making nine flat right now. - Yeah, nine flat. - Which is one of the best contracts, if not the best contract in the league for the best defensemen in the world. But McKinnon at 12 and a half, you can argue his team friendly. - Yep. - Give him a car at like even 13, 13 and a half. I'll make the argument that is still perfect. - That's team friendly. - 'Cause I think it's really going to pin 'cause isn't Fox up for a contract before him? - I think Fox signed his deal a while ago, didn't he? - I thought they signed around the same time. - Well, I think Fox got the max, didn't he? - I don't know. And then cool, Hughes, I know is definitely coming up. So Quinn Hughes will probably-- - No, Hughes is I think is set for a while. - Is he? I thought we said he-- - Fox was four more years. - Okay. - At 9.5, I got out of the league. - Great deals. - He slows this down. - Yeah, so you're right, I thought Hughes was longer, but he has two more years at 7.8. So he'll be up. - The car are going to be the same. - Well, Hughes is getting extended next year. - Okay. - McCartney is getting extended in two years because none of these guys are coming even close to free agency. - Yeah, Hughes will set the market. - Hughes will set the market and the car will break it. - Yep. That's actually beneficial for the apps 'cause at least they'll get a ballpark with Quinn Hughes. I love that we're talking about problems that are two years away. But you brought that up and I'm like, I wonder what Kel McCar's going to get. 'Cause you could make the case, he's worth it, every pet. - I mean, the world might look very different in two years where you might have McDavid sign the maximum and just he'll be the first one through the door and then you get other guys being like, "Well, I need that too." - Yeah, McDavid will sign it and then Matthews will break it 'cause Matthews will sign like another like three-year deal and have the AV hire. - Yeah. - And yeah, I wonder like 'cause McCar is worth every penny. Like you could just hand Kel McCar a blank check and be like, "Just make sure it's less than McDavid and you're good to go." - Honestly, if he signs the maximum, I don't even blink about it. That's Kel McCar, I don't care. - This will be what, 27 when he signs that? - Oh, you're asking me to look things up again. - No, no, I think it'll be 27, 28. - Kel McCar, this is so much more awkward without Kat from the 25 right now. - Yeah, it's gonna be 27. - Three more years on the deal, so he'll be 27 when he signs the deal in 28 when it kicks in. - Yeah, eight years, 36, Kel McCar's playstyle is very good. He will probably make it to 36. Yeah, he's gonna make a lot of money, a lot of money. - Yeah, 'cause I mean, you think about salary cap percentage 'cause what does McDavid make percentage of the cap right now? - Like 17? - I have to find it now 'cause it's gonna bother me. - Well, 'cause Matthew's now makes more at 13.25. 'Cause I knew where all this was on Cat Friendly and now I gotta find it again, which sucks. - The cap is what, 84? - Where is any of this, man? They gotta just bring Cat Friendly back. These capitals, God, this is terrible. I can't even answer my own question anymore. - Yeah, you're good, it's all right. - 14.27, 14.27 for his last one. Where is it for 15%? Okay, is what Matthew's makes against the cap right now, 15.06. - That's pretty well, that's not bad. - Yeah. - Yeah, I mean, you can make the case, Kel McCar's going to make a lot, a lot of money. But we got two years to worry about that. - And even then, I wouldn't even say I'm worried about it. - Yeah. - Because he's going the sign, it's going to be for a lot of money. The sooner you can come to peace with that, the happier you will be. - And I have the same mentality towards me, go ranching it. - Yeah, that was a nasty voice crack there. Sorry about that. - I didn't hear that, man. - Yeah, but yeah, I mean, you were talking about it, and I did want to bring this up. Like before, it feels kind of weird to say, but next year's off season, I think is going to be a lot more interesting because we'll have some clarity, hopefully with Val and Landy. - We'll have a clarity with $13 million of the salary cap. We're either going to find Landy's back and he's better than ever, or he's never going to play again. And we can just put that on LTI over. - Yeah, and Val. - At least to be answers on those. The ranting in thing. I don't imagine this is carrying that far out, especially now we're already getting reports, it's almost done. So like, what's really to worry about next off season? - Nothing. - Yeah, 'cause you look at, who's up? Okay, Ranton's going to be up and taken care of. Drew Ann, we already did this. Kovalenko, we'll need a deal. That'll be interesting. - You don't want to fail though, right? - I mean, the thing to worry about is going to be Georgiev, but that's a spoiler, something we're going to talk about later because there's a little something in the mailbag about that, so we're going to save that conversation towards the end, but that's really it. Oh, Connor? - Yeah, and I'll be an interesting one. But again, like what is he going to make? Does he make like a million dollar increase to two million a year? - Like, is he making miles wood money on his next deal? And with the way O'Connor's loved here, it might not even get that far. It might be locked up long before we get there. - Yep, it's going to be, excuse me, the cop there. I think Drew Ann took this deal this year knowing that they'll have more clarity next year. - And also, even if they don't, he's going to have another very good year and then probably look to get like four plus even if it's not from the abs again. - Yep, so yeah, I mean, it's next year's off season is going to be a lot more clarity, fingers crossed. - Right, there's going to be nothing like earth shattering next season, like, okay, even if Drew Ann and O'Connor and Georgiev go, the abs are still going to be here. Like, they're still going to be fine, especially if they figure out, is Landis Gogg still viable to play anymore? Is Nachushkin still on this team? Even if the answer to both those questions are no, that's $13 million in work. - That's a lot of money. - That's a lot of money and a lot of clarity to work with. Honestly, I think McFarlane would cry if he had that salary cap space to work with. - You'd be like, what is this, what is life? - You'd be on the phone with agents and just like start sobbing when they say a number and he can afford it. - Yeah, and in an ideal world, in a perfect world where I think the abs are at their best version, Landis back and Vowes back. And that's your team's complete either way. Like, that's the ideal world. But I agreed, next off season, you brought that up before we started recording. I was like, it's a really good point. We're hopefully going to have a lot more answers by that. But yeah, that's pretty much it for abs news. And it wasn't even really news. There's a report that it deals close. - Yeah, look at Rantonon versus Pasternak 'cause that's going to be the comparison. It's a pretty fair comparison. You look at them over the last three seasons and this is under Jesse's tweet. This is @minormidgetGTL. So thank you for doing all the work for me. So I did not have to do this myself. But he pointed out over the last three seasons, Rantonon has played 237 games, scored 133 goals, 301 points, 1.27 points per game. David Pasternak has played 236, which is only one less, scored 148 goals, which is 15 more and scored 300 points, which is one less and has 1.27 points per game. So very similar numbers. Pasternak signed eight-year extension, 11.25, 13.47% of the cap. And if the cap's going to be 92 million, Rantonon, you're probably looking at around 12 if he's going to sign for a similar number. So finishing the Ranton conversation, I think he's getting close to if not 12 flat. - I like 11.75. That's where I'm going to go. Just so we can be different. - Yeah, that still make him the current highest paid winger in the league until Marner signs his extension that inevitably gets Leaf fans to go into pitchfork mode. But 'cause Panerkin signed that deal a while ago 'cause he's still-- - Yeah, I would. - He signed it before the abs got good. - Yeah, well, the abs almost signed them. - Yeah. - Oh, there was that report. They gave him more money for a shorter term deal. Probably would have been like 12 and a half at that point. - Yeah, I would have ruled, could you imagine having Panerkin on that team? - That's a fun alternate history, isn't it? Because there's a lot of things the abs couldn't have done if they had Panerkin on the team. - Yep, no Burkowski. - They would have had Panerkin on the team, which would have been a mistake. - Yeah, that would have been really good. - That would have been a fun like three years when it would have ended up being-- - Because Pablo Fransos would have 100% been our starter. - Yeah. - Not a bad thing. - 'Cause the thing is, okay, you put Panerkin on the team instead of like Berkey and probably no Lecky either. - Probably no Lecky. Val's probably still on the team, but he's probably gone after the cup run. - Yeah. Well, Panerkin's probably gone before that, right? 'Cause when was this? This was 2019 going into the 2020 season? - Yes. - Yeah. - 'Cause guys were just coming off their first shot when it gets counted. - 2019 was when the Blue Jackets beat Tampa. That was Panerkin last year. - Yeah. - It's been a couple of years already. So that's a fun little. They probably beat Vegas and they probably win the cup in '21. - I would like to think so, but then I remember how important Brandon's side was to that team. - Panerkin, Aaron. - It was very important to that team too. - Yeah, they absolutely ruled. They would have ruled. And that was when they still probably no Devontaves, probably no Devontaves. - I hope that Taves was pretty affordable. I feel like they could have got, 'cause that was the same year, wasn't it? No, that was-- - No, a year after. - You're after. - I still think they could have made Taves work. - That is a fun revisionist history. - I don't know if I'm saying like, oh, it would have been so different, but also all of my favorite players would still be here. - Yeah, that would have been fun. But I think Panerkin made the right decision. - Yeah, he signed the seven years of 11.6 and he plays in New York. - Yeah, that's a fair deal. - Yeah. - Yeah, we'll see what happens with Meiko. You're going 12, I'm gonna say 11.75. - Yeah, I mean, I think at the end of the day, he's going to be the highest paid winger in the NHL, which I don't think you need to read into all that much, because again, it comes down to cap percentage. The cap goes up, players get paid more, so similar players get paid more money because there's more money to pay. - And if we're being honest, he'll be the highest paid winger for like, what, three days? And then someone else will miss. - Yeah, Marner's gonna sign his deal and do whatever. Is there a way to sort on Puckpedia by cap percentage? Because that would save me a lot of trouble right now. - Yeah, I have no idea, no idea. - I need to know, I need to find this out. - I need to make a YouTube video of just how to use Puckpedia. - I need to know, this is important to me. - We'll figure it out, but yeah, that Meiko extension will probably be finalizing this couple of weeks and we'll talk about it then. Only have a real NHL news we had today, or it happened yesterday. One of the players that I think you and I both think is just a very undervalued player, had two really good years back to back. He signed a contract in Vancouver, his name's Daniel Sprong, and he signed for $950,000 a year for one year. - 975, one year to the Vancouver Canucks. I mean, obviously our first thing is, there's a whole wide empty abs, do that. They might've tried, but at the end of the day, the player picks where he wants to go. - Yep, it just sucks because I think Daniel Sprong will be a great fourth-line center for this abs team. - He's not center. - No, he's a winger. - He's a winger. - He wouldn't be great in the bottom six. - I think Sprong would've worked here in the first couple of months, where there's no val and there's old land, either there's room in the top six, maybe even a spot to play, second line, right wing, but okay, Val comes back, Land of Scott comes back, all of a sudden he's getting bumped down because O'Connor's more valuable in the third line, and he's playing fourth line in minutes, and he's not playing at all, and then okay, well, this guy doesn't really play well in a fourth line role. I think there's more opportunity for him in Vancouver to play top nine minutes and be in a position to score goals, 'cause if you're putting Daniel Sprong in fourth line minutes and it's like, okay, go out there with Parker Kelly and Chris Wagner and go grind some pucks, he'd be like, no, I'm not going to do that. - I'm coming off, 'cause it's back to back 20 goal seasons. Do you have 20 goals last year? - Sprong had 18 goals last year with Detroit in more games than he did when he scored 21 with Seattle in 66. - But still, I mean, that's pretty good from a middle six forward to get close to 20 goals. He took a pretty big pay kick, 'cause he was making two million last year. So every time, one year or two million. - One year, two million, big, prove it deal, and then I don't know, just one of those things, you're like, he had 43 points. - Yeah, he's good. - He should be making more money than this, but sometimes guys just get left without deals. - Yeah, and I think Daniel Sprong is a very good player. - Yeah, they try to gamble and try to squeeze a little bit more money. Like, oh, that contract's not enough for me. I'm going to get more on the open market, and then they don't. - Yeah, but I like that move for Vancouver a lot. Daniel Sprong is a very interesting player. Really, he's only been good these past two years. Before that, he was the definition of a fourth-liner. - I mean, I remember the days when Pittsburgh's still in their cup window, they're going toe to toe with the caps every year. Sorry, muscle memory, but they're going toe to toe with the caps every year, and they're all like, oh, well, Daniel Sprong, he's our number one prospect. And you just wait for him to break into the NHL. You're going to put this guy on Sidney Crosby's wing, and he's going to turn into a superstar, I tell you. This guy's going to be an absolute monster. And I forget who they traded him for, because again, Cap friendly's not here to bail me out anymore. So he played in Pittsburgh for two years, played 24 games, had two goals. And then he goes to, he went to Anaheim for someone that I don't remember anymore. It has been a long time. Then he goes to the caps, which I only remember because the guy who was traded for a Christian Juice, who I'm sure some of you have just never heard of because you're not caps fans. I had his jersey, the EJ-O-O-S. When I was in high school, that was my favorite name, Christian Juice, I had a Juice jersey. People were like, how the hell do you even say that name? Now you got traded after two years. So, I don't know. - How it goes? - Yeah, Daniel Sproung to Vancouver, could have been a fun option in Colorado, but probably only for like two to three months. - Yeah, the more you talk about it, the more I'm just reminded of, I felt the same way about Thomas Tatar. - Yeah. - Yeah, we all know that way. - Yeah, can we ever mention Tatar when back to New Jersey? - I don't think so, but good for him. - Yeah, he got a decent money for the season he had last year. Yeah, 1.8 for the solid nine goals that he scored. - Yeah, I mean, good for him, man. I'm all for players getting paid, I'm all for that. So, good for you, Thomas Tatar. - Don't miss the dive. - Still want to go. - I remember when we were so worried he got traded and he was going to go, oh, he's going to break out later. I mean, he had eight goals. We didn't even have to play him because we traded him to Seattle. We already played them three times back then, so. - It was good. I mean, there was like a two-day span, where I think he scored like three goals in like two days. - Yeah, it was like right after we traded him. - Yeah, like damn it. Look at what we gave away and now he was okay. - Yeah, we got a free draft pick for it. We signed a draft pick to what did we give him last year, 1.5. We signed that for a fifth round pick. - That is crazy. He got a pay increase when he was coming off 20 goals. - Right, really, and also he didn't sign until August. - Right, yeah, he got a pay increase for that. Good for Thomas to turn, man. - I mean, he had a 20 goal season in New Jersey and now he's going back. You know, maybe he'll have another one. - Maybe with Jack Hughes, maybe, I don't know. He'll probably get traded at the deadline again. That's how it goes. Where did Tyler Tofoli end up? San Jose? - Not to San Jose. He signed that like $6 million deal for four years. - Good for him, man. Good for him. - Yeah. - All right, I forgot about that. I just remember how excited I was about the Devils and last year. - Well, now we're all doing it again. Everyone's picking the Devils as their dark horse. Are they really a dark horse? Are everyone's picking them? I say no. - No, but yeah. I mean, that's pretty much it for NHL news, which considering it's July 21st, that was actually a good amount of NHL news. - There's some things to talk about. - What free agents are even left? - That is a great question. If only I had a site that had that readily available for me to- - Because I don't know if the abs are going to be able to do what they've done the past couple of years and just snag someone in late August before training camp. - Yeah. I mean, like there's guys. There's like James Van Reems, Dyke, Tyler Johnson, Shat and Kirk Hoffman, not going to put Max Patrick ready out there because no. I mean, like there's, honestly, there's decent players here. They're going to find value. - Yeah, they're going to get, I mean, some of those guys are going to get signed to PTOs by other teams. - Some of them are going to get signed to PTOs by the abs. - Yep. - Yeah. - James Van Reems, like does that not just scream and ask PTO? - Yeah, like fourth line just deflect pucks in. But also like you look at like a Tyler Johnson, like it was a fourth line center. I'd be open to that. - Yep. - Like on the cloud kind of thing. Nick Cousins is still available out there. - There are guys here. Like you go down the list. Like you even get to like the end of the 40s. You're still talking like Oliver Schillington's still available. You don't like the Scandala. Like there's guys here. Honestly, I thought this list would be way worse before I clicked on it. - It's not bad. - Yeah. - The PTO market's going to be interesting. And the abs are going to sign some. My favorite abs PTO of all time, Artem and Isamoff. That was cool when they, with PTO'd him. - Not Jack Johnson. - Well, no, Jack Johnson, it was between him and Jack Johnson and Jack Johnson made the team. I just like, I was funny that they got Artem and Isamoff and he was so bad. - So bad. - Yeah. Yeah, he was, wasn't he? - It was great for a couple of years with Chicago, but I remember just watching that. And the abs picked Jack Johnson and that worked out pretty well for him. - Yeah, they worked out pretty well. They want a cup. - Yup. So, I mean, the free agency, the abs will get a couple guys to PTOs and they'll sign them after the PTOs. Like, has Kevin Schattenkirk just had like one of the weirder NHL careers? - Yeah, I don't really know what happened with him and why just no one wants him. - Yeah, because he went to, when he got traded from the abs, he got traded to the Blues. - Of the Blues, he went to watch. - They got traded to the caps. - He goes to the Rangers, where I think he just absolutely stunk. - Yeah, gets bought out by the Rangers. - Goes to Tampa. - Wins a cup. - Wins a cup, signs with Anaheim. - And then goes to Boston. And now he's-- - Yeah. - I mean, he's made a good amount of money, but I always was just like, I always felt that guy was so much better than what he was getting treated as. So, but maybe I'm just mistaken, but he was part of the Eric Johnson trade. It was St. Louis sent E.J. to Colorado for Chris Stewart and Kevin Schattenkirk, if I'm remembering correctly. And that trade worked out pretty well for the abs. And we'll see. Did you see what kind of frustrated me? Eric Johnson was golfing with Joe Sakke a couple weeks ago. - What about it? Just like-- - It just was like Joe, why didn't you just be like, hey, man, come home? - Yeah, come home. I mean, listen, I will always take Eric Johnson back here. - Yeah, but just come on home, dude. Like, at least like, just trade for him before a thousandth game. Like that's really what we did. - Just for, just loan him. Just for one game, bring him home. You can send him back. He can do it every day with him. Bring him home for one game. We'll play him in a few minutes and-- - Did we check the schedule of when this sum, we can do off air and we can report back? I wonder how cool to be if his thousandth game was in Colorado. - Well, it's pretty soon, isn't it? - I think he was at like 982. - Well, the flyer, no, it's in Philly, November 18th. - Yeah, that sucks. - Well, we're playing Philly, November 18th. I don't know if that's his thousandth though. - I'm pulling it up right now. Oh God, I forgot how bad the NHL website is. - Terrible. And he's coming to Colorado. I'm gonna fill a buster and try to find when he's coming to Colorado, February 2nd. - Yeah, it's gonna wait. - So, it's not gonna be in Colorado. But maybe, I feel like we would have heard about it if his thousandth game was gonna be against the game. - Yeah, that would be cool. Oh, he's at 987, so he's got 13 games. - Yeah, I don't think we're gonna, but we wouldn't know by now if that was gonna happen against the apps. Someone, someone would have noticed. Someone would have noticed, he played 67 games last year. That's actually pretty good. - Two different teams. And apparently the flyers liked him enough to bring him back for another role. - Yeah, missed that game. - Hey everybody, hope you've been enjoying this episode so far interrupting to bring you a word from our sponsor @DraftKingsSportsBook. Now, back to the episode. - But, all right, that's not filibustering. Should we introduce our new segment that we're gonna do for the rest of the summer? - Oh yeah, introduce our new little segment. So we're gonna be killing time over the next couple of weeks before we get into our off-season, off-season mode. So we're gonna do the typical podcast bit where we're just gonna start doing snake drafts. And we're gonna start just having little debates on the show. You know, when you see like a really shitty podcast clip on Twitter or on TikTok and they're just like drafting shit and you're just like, "Who the hell listens to this?" I saw that and I thought, "Wouldn't it be a great idea if we snooped down to that level as we're doing that as well?" And just had really easy clickbait content that will get people mad and give us more attention. That's basically the gist. - Yeah, that's the gist. We are going to try our best not to offend anyone, but it's the internet. And we probably will offend some people who don't do it. If you're a nice person and you just genuinely wanna debate with us, respond with your favorites of this and we will politely engage. But we're not trying to do like rage baiting type things here. We just think it'll be fun and it's a good way to go down memory lane for us and for the listeners. - So we'll start with an easy one today. We're gonna be looking at the best goals from last season for the abs. And these can be anything. It can be sick goals, big goals. We're gonna be taking a look and drafting our five best goals of the season. And did we ever figure out who's going first? - No, but I can decide it right now. - Oh, you're just gonna pick? You're just gonna choose for yourself? - No, I mean, I'm gonna pull it up on Google. - No, I got a better idea. Hey Siri, heads or tails? Oh, okay, it's not sure it understands. What the fuck are you even? - Yeah, let's just go. I'll let you go first, you go first. - Okay, I'll go first. - I get two picks. - My show, I was here first, I get senior. All right, so my first one, honestly, this one is easy for me. First round against the Jets. Kael Makar end-to-end, best goal of the season. Best goal of the playoffs. No one ever topped it. Well, it was at game three, just at the early entire Jets team. Top corner, easiest first pick in my life. - I like that, it's a good one. That's a good one. I'm gonna go a little bit. See, this is where it gets tough. - This is where it gets tough. - I wanna pick my list, which one goal's that hyped me up the most. And for me, my first one is going to be Ross Colton's goal against Vancouver to tie the game after a three-year-old deficit. It just barely crept over the line. That was one of the most hardworking goals of the year, and it was on the second half of a back-to-back, and that goal was awesome. I loved that goal. So that's gonna be my one one. This is my personal list. I don't care what other people say. These are my favorite goals of the year, my favorite. - I think you're already conceding because I don't think you even picked the best goal of the back-to-back 'cause that goal-- - Well, no, I get another pick here. I get another pick. Don't spoil it 'cause we're going snake-draft. I want you to make sure you get yours. My second one, oof, oof, there's gotta be a McKinnon, one I'm missing. - I'm sure you are because my list has a lot of McKinnon goals on here. - Yep. - I might go McKinnon against Minnesota, and there was a, I forget which game it was. It was an ESPN broadcast. You scored a hatrick in the second period. He had a breakaway in that one. That's probably gonna be number two for me. - There's two of them, which one are you picking? - Sure. - Just a general notion of the McKinnon breakaway. - Yeah, it was a pass from Drew Ann. It was an outlet pass where Drew Ann hit him with a sweet backhand that broke him away. - All right, I'll give you that one. I'm talking to you in my next one, which is Arteri Laconan's buzzer beater in overtime against the Oilers as that, parsed my favorite goal of the regular season. Probably the most hyped I was outside of the playoffs. That had me pacing around my house 'cause I had to calm down. Favorite goal of the year to beat the Oilers just had them in hell 'cause they can't beat us. And man, I couldn't believe that went in. That pass McKinnon made off the board with, well, it was at 0.2, 0.1 seconds left in the game. And it's against the Oilers. Come on. - That was a good one. Your gift was great in that overtime period too. - Yeah, that's personally my favorite goal this season. - I like it. - Easy number one, two for me. And I go again, don't I? Snake draft, I forgot how snake draft works. I was not prepared to pick again. I'm gonna take Jonathan Drew Ann's overtime winner against Pittsburgh. - You stole the one I was gonna have to take. That was a good pick. - Yep, I knew it. So I gotta take that one off the board now. He's, I think outside of the Laconan goal, which is hype just 'cause it was last second. This one where I was just like, oh, they're just gonna win the whole thing. They're just, they're down four goals. I got several three goal comebacks in the last two months. They're just never going to lose ever. They're gonna just be perfectly fine. Jonathan Drew Ann's just a monster. Do that, just down. I remember after that game, we're on the show. It's me like, how does that happen? - Yeah. - Are you down four goals? You just don't even care. It was like, yeah, whatever. We're just gonna do whatever we want anyway. - And that bias in the ass, that type of play style, but that was fun. - It was fun while it lasted. - That was a really fun couple of weeks. That was in the peak of my McDonald's era. Good times, good times. - You thought you were going to be after that one? - Yeah. This one for me is one of my favorites just because when I think of this highlight, I just remember the fan throwing the hat on before the goal even went in, Nathan McInaughey against Washington to score his hat trick goal. That highlight video with the fan throwing his hat as the puck goes into the net, one of the most dominant games Nathan McInaughey played all year. Was that one of his first mat tricks where he had four goals? - That was his second mat trick. - That was his second mat trick, 'cause his first one was against New Jersey. - Ottawa? - Ottawa, I thought it was New Jersey had four goals too. - It was Ottawa. - Was Ottawa, maybe New Jersey was just a five point game. - Yeah, one of the ones. - Yeah, one of the two. And then I'd be remiss to say, if I didn't take this as my last pick, again, this is my list. The Curtis McDermott goal against Philadelphia. Great pass by Nathan McInaughey. McDermott with a nice little toe drag far post. - Was that four or five because I have two more picks? - Oh, yeah. Yeah, no, that's my fourth. - Yeah, you still got one more. - That's got one more, but I'm still on Chris McDermott the goal against him. I love that pass by McKinnon and Curtis McDermott's my king. - Now I'm left with a couple that I gotta work through. Honestly, I just, I love this one early in the season. This is probably one of the most random fun fact goals ever. Logan O'Connor's third straight, short-handed goal. - That was cool. - I love that one so, so much. I think that one was- - That was a good one. - Especially for early in the season as hype as it gets. But just 'cause he looked unstoppable at that point is average early season LOC. And I just love, I love Logan O'Connor. - So much. I really hope he has a great season and he's healthy next year because that was so much fun. Where he just has that amazing breakout last year. And those short-handed goals, man, that was fun. - Over good times, those were good times. - He almost had four. - He did almost have four, that's right. - Yeah, he came really close on the fourth one. I remember that, man, that would have been so fun. I gotta work through a couple of these here and I gotta make up my mind on a couple of these. 'Cause he still have some stuff from the playoffs, which were pretty sick. I'm gonna take Kiel McCar's first hat trick. - Yeah, I was just looking at that one. That's a good one. - I'm gonna finish up, that's my fifth pick. Kiel McCar's first hat trick against Detroit. He gets the one to barely go through. Almost can't even believe that's Kiel McCar's first hat trick. But there's gonna be more in his career. Great moment for him. I'm gonna take that. - I like that one, that's a solid pick. This one was one of my personal favorites. I loved the Nathan McKinnon goal in the New York Rangers game where he beat Jonathan Quick. That was just a perfect display of speed. He beats two guys. I think he splits the defender and that was the only goal in the game for the abs and the abs almost stole that game. But I love that goal. That was the first game after the All-Star break. So, that for me-- - I think you're leaving a lot of good ones on the board here. - No, I am, I am, I know that. But I'm just thinking my personal favorites. - I think that's a poor strategy for a snake draft. I will say that. - That's fine, that's fine. You say what you wanna say about it. But for me, that's where I'm at. - I think it's a decent list, but we'll go through some honorable mentions. You have some honorable mentions here. - Give me some honorable mentions here. - Honorable mentions vows over time goal against the wild in his return. I think on hindsight, that one isn't as epic as it used to be, but at the moment, that one was-- - That moment, it did rule. That's why I was between that one, but then again, like when everything else that happened afterwards, it didn't really rule as much for me. - Yeah, it's still an awesome goal in the moment, but even then still love that one a lot. McKinn's hate shot in overtime against the Islanders. And also-- - You know if I had that one on there too, but then again, like that one was kind of a, like he fluttered that one past. Like it wasn't great. - You won't rip the net off with that shot. - Yeah. - You mean eh? - But I get no, it's a good one. It's a good one. Don't get me wrong, it's a good one. It's just I went through a couple. - I think I am getting you wrong here. That shot was disgusting. - What do you end up at me? - It was good. I just think McKinn had some better ones. - It's fair. I mean, he didn't make this one did make the list, so fair enough. There was, I mean, you're only playoff overtime winner Miles Wood in game one. - Oh, that one was a good one. That was a good one. - I, if you took more off of my list, I probably would have taken it, but just you lost the series so you don't think about it as far enough. - Yep, no, I agree. That one, that should be on there. That's a miss on my part. That's a miss on my part. - Where McCar's break away goal against Vancouver in November, back in the peak of McCar versus Hughes for the season to deal the game. I loved that one. When I was building my playoff video, I couldn't find the abs call for that. I searched for like three hours. - Yeah, that's the worst when you can't find it. Trust me, I know the pain. - They had the sports net highlight, but they didn't have, I didn't even find that one. For some reason, this goal just would not ever pop up. And like you, obviously I'm looking through the abs, top plays of the year to prepare for this list. It wasn't even on there. I don't know, that one pissed me off. That was one of the best plays of the year. - I'm looking at this right now, it's totally off topic, but Riley Tufti had a game winning goal. - Yeah. - Well, I tried to deflected that one. Okay, sorry. I was looking at that, I was like, when did Riley Tufti score a goal for the abs? I forget he had one. Put that one on my list. No, I'm kidding. I mean, I'm looking through all the games. Like there were a lot of really good goals and the listeners are gonna be able to point out a lot of them that we missed. But I feel pretty good. I did miss like Curtis had two goals. His one against Minnesota was awesome. It was also a game winning goal. So that one probably should've been on there. That was a nice little toe drag between the livestreams. - I have one that would've been, if we did 10, definitely would've made the list, but Thomas DeTarr is only goal of the year. - Yeah, against Calgary. That was a good one. That was an electric moment. That was an electric moment. But yeah, I mean, overall, I'm sure we missed a few. I will gladly be proven wrong tomorrow when I get chirped all over Twitter, but I feel good about my list. Feel good. I feel great about my list. Honestly, this might be my top five just in general, so. - Yeah, I like it. I like where our heads are at. I like where our heads are at. We'll see how everyone else is feeling about it when we post, should we make a graphic and then just have people vote for who they think was the best? - I mean, I think I won. So I mean, we'll have to. - I mean, we'll see. - I can spare you like the 90/10 vote that it's gonna be. And we'll just put the graphic out there, but. - Yeah, we'll see. We'll see. But this is pretty fun. I forget what our next one's gonna be. We'll talk about that off air and we'll go from there. - Yeah. - I like my list. Mine is my personal favorites. Those were my personal favorites. They may not be the fan's favorite, but those were my personal favorite goals. Like that Ross Colton goal that I took one one, is it deserving of one one? Absolutely not. But for me in that moment, that goal kicks so much ass. Like that was just an awesome moment to watch live. And you have the whole like drama of was it a goal or was it not a goal because they had to go to the review? That was awesome for me. That was awesome. - See, you know what? If I was picking a goal from that game and I'm not allowed to pick the over time winner, I would have taken the first goal because it felt in that moment seeing that goal go in with less than a minute left in the period that they were gonna do it. - Yeah. But then like the Ross goal one, I just remember how hype that was. - No, I know what you mean. I would have considered that for my list. Firstly, I don't even, I forgot about that when I didn't even write it down. - Yeah, no, it's fair. That's fair. And there were a couple that you said that I forgot about. So that's cool with me. It's cool with me. - I had to pick a Ranton in one. I loved his wrap around versus Buffalo where he just- - Yeah, that was a good one too. Faked out the- - Oh, the out of the cage. - Yeah. It feels kind of wrong to not have a meeko goal on there, but you know what I mean? It was McKinnon's year. - Yeah, you had a hat trick against St. Louis. That one was fun. Basically on that game single-handedly. The series winner he had against Winnipeg. - Yep. - Both of them could get both those goals in game five. - Yeah, so I mean, there was definitely like that or so. - Yeah, like Val's hat trick was cool too. - Yep. And then it got depressed as this season went on. We will see. - I mean, like- - How much ones we missed? Let us know which ones we missed. - Let us know which ones we missed. We're gonna get onto the mail bag here and start to wrap this one up. Our first response for their favorite goal year slash question coming from Katie, asking favorite goal was McCar's breakaway against Vancouver. Thank you Katie. Someone who actually gets it that that goal was awesome. I don't know why it doesn't get brought up as much. And McKinnon's overtime winner against Dallas. I had that one written down too. - Oh yeah, that was a good one. Great play by Devonta. - Both of the multi goal comebacks against Dallas. Those ones were awesome too, particularly the McKinnon winner just 'cause it was so emphasizing it. - Yeah. - And then question from Katie, does McCar break his own points record for this season or his goals record? - Or both? - Yes. - Yes, I'm just gonna say, I think Kel McCar is gonna have 100 points this year. - I think Kel McCar hits 100 points. I think he has 25 goals. So I don't think he, I don't know. 28 goals is a lot. - 28 goals is a lot for a game. - Basically to have a 30 goal season as a defense man. I'm gonna say no on the goals and yes for points. - I, yeah, that's exactly right. I think he's right around 25 goals, which is still a shit ton for a defense man. - I'm sorry, 28 goals is ridiculous for a defense man. That's absurd. - That's what, Emily, people are argued against him winning the Norris that year. That is insane. - Yeah, but he was, he was ridiculous and good. I think he's right around 20, I'm gonna say he has 22 goals, 78 assists. - Yeah, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go 25, 76. He has 101 points at the end of the year. - I think we're reaching that air now where the defense man hitting 100 points isn't gonna be that crazy anymore. - I think it's gonna be crazy, but not like first in 30 years. 'Cause McCarter gives you the second one to do it after Carlson, Hughes is probably gonna do it at least one, Horace probably gonna do it again. It's gonna be like having 60 goals as a goal score or like that where it's like, it's crazy, but it's not like earth shattering. - It's not earth shattering anymore and I think that's where we're gonna get with it. - Yeah. So I think McCarter is gonna break the points record. You're asking him to score 29 goals, which at that point just score 30. - Yeah. I'm not gonna put anything Pascal McCar of all people in the world. Maybe he does it, maybe he doesn't, but he's gonna win a narcissist here again. - Yes. Agreed. 100% agree. - And we got one more question from Jake, which I teased earlier, which is probably gonna take up a little bit of conversation here. What would you like to see out of your gift to consider keeping him around and extending him? - Let's be quite frank. I don't think this is your gifts last year with the abs. Not because he sucks or anything. I think he's actually gonna have a great year. I think he's going to be 9, 10, 9, 12, say percentage. He's gonna win 40 plus games. The abs just don't resign goalies. They just don't. And the only way I could see them resigning your gift is if he signs like a four year, $3.5 million deal, and that'd be taking a pay cut for him and that's just not gonna happen. - Even then, I think he would have to have a season that's good, but not too good, and also be willing to maybe take like four, for even then, maybe like two years, 'cause Nabakov throws a big wrench in this now, because Nabakov might be ready to come over before even like the end of the year. So if Nabakov comes over, again, Patrick, remember he's 21, he's not gonna come right in and start in the NHL immediately, but he might be ready to play games sooner than you think. I think the ideal scenario is they want to, okay, maybe they wanna keep your gift for two more years, four million dollars, three max, you give him another three years, you let Nabakov play in the NHL, you give him some time, you keep him in on and around as long as you can, but I think this is a stretch, because your gift, if he has a good year, they're not gonna be able to afford him. And if he has a bad year, they're not gonna sign him. So there doesn't leave you with a lot of room for error, where he just kinda has to sit in good, but don't start challenging for Vesna's or anything like that. Just like win us games. You want a lot of games with a sub 900 last year, just like be like 9.08, 9.10. - My ideal world for this year is Giorgif is like a 9.15, finishes top three in the Vesna, and then just gets a massive payday from someone. - Right. - It's my ideal world, because that means they have to be very good this year if they have a Vesna level goalie. - I think the ideal scenario is you get the absolute best you can from Giorgif. Like you said, he gets big money, and on and then takes over the reins for next year, because he had an amazing year as a backup last year at under million dollars. And the buck of is just ready. And him and on in just split minutes, and you're paying less than two million dollars for goaltending, and you just go and spend that on the rest of your team next year. I think that's a perfect scenario. It's, I don't know how realistic that is, but it would be fun if it worked. - Yeah, well, and I mean, like you said, if it's going to be tight, because what is Nabokov going to be? What is he going to be? That's tough. You don't know. He's still a young goaltender. I imagine he's going to dominate the KHL again this year, but then he's the KHL transition to the HL as easy as people say it is. We don't know. - And go to the HL, which is the difference in him and Cal Richie, is that when Nabokov comes over, you don't have to play him at the NHL. You can just sit him in the minors for three years. If that's really the best thing for him to just play at the AHL and not rush him, then they'll do it. So, but Nabokov also might be really good. So you might be playing sooner than we think. - Yeah, he might be playing sooner than we think. It is like, I like your gift. I think he's a solid goalie. Of the like three or four we've had in this cup run, probably fourth out of him. I loved Darcy Kemper. I loved Phil Grubauer and I loved Pablo Fransos. I think all, I'm not going to say Fransos, but Grubauer and Kemper at their peak are better than what Georgiev has given us. - Yeah, Darcy Kemper, probably the best goalie. - Yes. - And yeah, he got it high poked out in the playoffs and barely finished above 900. But if he didn't, we probably lose two games the entire run. So there had to be like some form of challenge for the entirety of that run. And Grubauer, I think was just there long enough and was good by him over time again. - But he was better. He's better than what Georgiev has given us consistently. - Yeah, yeah. - Like Georgiev had his peak, I think is better than Grubauer, but Grubauer was far more consistent his time here. - Oh no, I think that might be recency bias, just because Grubauer finished so poorly here in his last game and has been at Seattle ever since he signed. - Grubauer at his best was a Vesna finalist. - No, he wasn't a Vesna finalist, he was. Like he was very good, I loved Gruby. That's what I'm saying. I still think it goes Kemper, Grubauer, Frankie, Georgiev. And that's not a slight against Georgiev, it's just the abs have had some really fucking good goalies. - Yeah, and he also wasn't good last year. So if he has a better year this year, I think you definitely put him above Frankie at that point. And I think he's absolutely, by the time he's done, you're gonna be above Frankie, but Frankie won a cup here and was an important guy in the Western Conference final. You get biased points for that. And for Georgiev, I just think this was the plan. I don't think there really was ever part of the plan to re-sign him. I don't think they signed him with the anxiety that they needed to re-sign him. And they might go and even if Nabakov isn't ready for four years and Ananin's a decent fringe starter. They're just gonna go get another Georgiev. They're gonna go do the same thing again. They did it with Grubauer, did it for one year with Kemper because they had no options? And they found Georgiev and they're gonna go find another guy like Lindgren or something or Logan Thompson from the caps 'cause I'm only listing cash players because of sometimes the only guys I know. But they're gonna go do that again and they're gonna go figure it out. - Exactly. So and it's nothing. It's Georgiev. I think Georgiev's gonna be great this year. I mean, he was. - I wouldn't be surprised if Georgiev gives a top five goal in the league this year. That's just how his career goes. He's bad one year and he's great another one. - Yep. - And he will sign a big payday with someone else and I will cheer for him there. But I just don't think the abs, if we've learned anything over these past five years, they don't invest highly in their goal-tending. - They don't pay money for goalies. You can't. - Is Georgiev the highest paid one? - Well, Kemper got retained so I don't know. - That's what I'm saying. So Kemper was still pretty cheap 'cause he was retained. - Grubauer, I mean, I'm not remembering the goalie salaries off the top of one. - Yeah, I think Grubauer signed for like three years, three million. - Kemper was four and a half but was retained. So that was, I don't remember what he ended up making here. But I think it was less than what Georgiev makes now. And Grubauer, I'm not sure I can find it again. This is without Cat Friendly. Now I'm trying to learn how to use other sites on the fly. It was 3.3. So essentially the same thing. - Yeah, so Grubauer is pretty much the highest paid one. And that's not even like high paid, it's $4 million. - And again, your salary cap goes up. - Exactly. So that's what I think the apps are gonna do. I think Georgiev's got a great year and he's going to leave him for agency and go get paid, but San Jose. - Yeah, that would just make sense, right? - Actually, he'd probably thrive in San Jose because for the first couple of years, they'd suck. And Georgiev does better when he's just constantly under pressure. And that's just not how the apps play sometimes. So I think that would probably be an ideal scenario for him. - Yeah, I mean, it's funny though, just how much like that playoff run changed the perspective of him. - For a Georgiev? - Yeah. - Yeah, I mean, it couldn't have started worse. - Right. - It was so bad to start that we were like, we need goalies next year. And then it ends and you're like, okay, we got Georgiev for one more year, like we're fine. - Because the context around that whole situation was he went into the playoffs with his job on the line. - Yeah. - Whereas like the leash is tight. If he has a bad game, on and it's going. And then he had the worst game, and he goalies had been like the last 10 years and didn't get pulled. And then is one of the main reasons that playoff run went as long as it did. - Yeah. I mean, it's just hockey. So it is funny because we're having these conversations and it's just completely different than what it would have been three months ago. - Yeah. - So we forget the first year of Georgiev. We forget how good he was. - Yeah, he was great in the regular season. - He was the reason we won the division. Ranton then was a big part of that, but Georgiev was the reason we won the central that year. And he was fine in the playoffs. He wasn't bad against Seattle. He wasn't great, but he was far from terrible. But in the regular season, he should have gotten a lot more love. I'm not saying he should have won the Vessner or even been nominated, but he should have gotten a lot more attention for it than he did. - Yeah, he was great. He was great. So hopefully Georgiev bounces back, but the abs will be having a new starting goalie next year. - Yeah, and it might be uses on him. - Yeah, that's just where we're at. It's just how it goes with the abs. So how fun it would be if they find a way to make a trade for like Ask Rob from Nashville. - Would you put it past him? - No, I wouldn't. It's just, that would just be hilarious if we just have like three just crazy young goalies and be like, one of these has to be good, right? 'Cause what does Ask Rob make? - He's still League men. Like he signed his entry. - Okay, but it's only for one more year. But how much he making on the next deal is the question. - Right, 'cause he'd be in RFA. - He's only played three games. - Yeah, but yeah, it wouldn't put maybe past. - You've given him Georgiev money for two, three years. You might have something there. - Yeah, you might have something. Who knows, maybe use this hand and it's the goalie that we're thinking is gonna go off this year. - Maybe so. I didn't think you got another year of him at Under League men. - So. - It's just, the abs are in a decent model. - Under a million, not under League men. - Under a million, yeah. So we'll see. That was a good question. If you're a big Georgiev stand, enjoy it. 'Cause I think this is probably his last year with the abs. And not because this is based off performance. It's just, he'll probably play too well that the abs can't afford him. - You should be very well prepared for this by now. Considering the abs tracker with goalies, they don't hang on to them, which is done fine by them recently, so. - They're good to go. - Yeah, they're fine. - Yeah, they're fine. I don't think I have anything else to this episode, man. - I think we are good for this one.
