Wall Street's closing mostly lower after a massive tech sell-off, the Nasdaq fell more than 3% in a technology route linked to Chinese startup DeepSeek and artificial intelligence. AR-related names plunge with Nvidia and Broadcom dropping 18% on concerns over competition from the low-cost Chinese app. At the closing bell, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 289 points, the S&P lost 89, and the Nasdaq fell 612 points. Three executive orders are reportedly set to be signed by President Trump today that aim to reshape the military. One of the orders will reportedly include reinstating service members with back pay for those who were discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. Another will ban transgender service members from serving in the U.S. armed forces, while the third will ban any diversity-related programs in the military. The Trump administration is showcasing what it calls the "wurst criminals" taken into custody as part of immigration raids. The White House ex-thread reads that under President Trump's leadership, "Ice agents are working tirelessly to protect our communities." ICE reported more than 950 people were arrested nationwide just Sunday alone. House Speaker Mike Johnson says he feels like the U.S. is entering a new era of government. Louisiana Congressman spoke ahead of President Trump meeting with House GOP members in Dural Florida. "When the president says he wants to make the government more efficient and effective and we say we want to limit the size and scope of government, it means that everything is on the table for re-evaluation." He comes as House Republican leaders have signaled they will attempt to put Trump's legislative agenda into one bill that could include measures on energy and the border. The first trailer is being released for Season 3 of HBO's The White Lotus. The new season will take place at a resort in Thailand. The new cast includes Leslie Bibb, Kerry Kuhn, Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey and Patrick Schwarzenegger. Natasha Rothwell is the only returning cast member for the third season. The third season of White Lotus debuts February 16th on Max. I'm Lisa Taylor. An AI company has a revised merger proposal for TikTok's U.S. operations. Matt Matenson has details. Laura Westbrook reports perplexity AI is offering to join with the U.S. government to create an entity that, for now, is called NUCO. Under the proposal, ByteDance would sell TikTok U.S. to the investors and exclude TikTok's core recommendation algorithm, which ByteDance would keep. The government would keep part ownership under an IPO worth at least $300 billion. Existing investors would receive equity in the new company. A new study at the University of Miami-Miller School of Medicine could lead to a breakthrough for paralysis patients, the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and the Department of Neurological Surgery have been selected to become the second U.S. base site for Neuralink's Prime Study. The precise, robotically implanted brain computer interface aims to enable paralyzed patients to use their own thoughts to control external devices through a brain-computer interface. The device assists patients who otherwise have limited or no use of both hands due to a spinal cord injury or ALS. Paul McCartney is advocating for more protections against AI. Michael Kastner reports He says more needs to be done for young artists against artificial intelligence and exploitation by tech companies in an interview with the BBC, the former Beetle Call for Regulations, and decried the fact that anyone can seemingly get ripped off. McCartney said that money should be going to the artists who created a song, not some tech giant somewhere. actress Jan Shepherd has died at the age of 96. Shepherd acted opposite Elvis Presley in two movies including 1958's King Creole. She guest-starred on plenty of TV westerns. Shepherd died of pneumonia on January 17th. Her son told The Hollywood Reporter he said she was a good one and will be dearly missed.
