This is your 24/7 news update, the latest views this hour in just four minutes. President Trump's pick for Secretary of Defense Pete Higg-Seth has advanced through the Senate confirmation. The Senate voted largely along party lines Thursday with a final vote in favor 51/249. Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins voted against him with Murkowski saying she couldn't in good conscience support his nomination. She added past behavior the Higg-Seth has admitted to, including infidelity on multiple occasions, demonstrates a lack of judgment. Higg-Seth has faced allegations of sexual assault and excessive drinking. The Senate holds his confirmation vote later today. A federal judge in Seattle issued a temporary restraining order that prevents President Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship from taking effect. That story from Mark Mayfield. Washington Attorney General Nick Brown led three states in the lawsuit. He says the 14th amendment to the Constitution was meant to reverse the Dred Scott decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that upheld slavery and denied citizenship to black people. It was put into effect to reaffirm what it means to be an American. And so that's why this case was so important. Oregon, Arizona, and Illinois joined Washington in filing the lawsuit. The judge ruled the lawsuit would likely prevail. I'm Mark Mayfield. Mexico is building tent shelters at the border to prepare for potential mass deportations. The shelters will provide temporary housing and support for deported individuals. Multiple reports say Trump is getting ready to send 10,000 troops to the U.S. Southern border to help border patrol agents shut off access to asylum here in the U.S. Mexico has now launched an app to help detain migrant access legal resources and support. Spirit Airlines is implementing rules for passengers regarding offensive tattoos or sheer clothing. Spirit updated its contract of carriage this week, saying passengers won't be allowed to board or they'll be asked to leave if they have body earth that's lewd, obscene or offensive in nature or wearing clothing that is see-through or doesn't adequately cover private parts. The bill requires doctors to provide the same degree of care if a child is born alive during an attempted abortion as they would a normal childbirth. While Republicans frame the bill as not being anti-abortion but anti-infanticide, it's been largely criticized for its redundancy. Although a rare occurrence, it's already illegal for doctors to allow infants to die if they're born alive during an abortion attempt. I'm Brian Schuck. The Anti-Defamation League is criticizing Elon Musk for making jokes about Nazis and the Holocaust. The ADL is a nonprofit committed to fighting anti-Semitism. It previously defended Musk after he repeatedly made a straight armed salute at President Trump's inauguration event. However, the group voiced its concern after Musk made a social media post full of puns about Nazi leaders, including Adolf Hitler. Almost exactly five years since the first case of COVID was confirmed in the U.S., researchers say the virus could be causing increased cases of chronic fatigue syndrome. Michael Castner has that story. A new study finds that six months or more after a COVID infection, people were seven and a half times more likely to show signs for the syndrome. Some 13 to 58 percent of people who have suffered from long COVID met the criteria for CFS and researchers think the two illnesses could be triggered by the same factors. The study was published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. I'm Michael Castner. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has refused the moniker Utah Yetis for Salt Lake City's NHL team. According to KSL in Salt Lake City, the office denied the nickname due to a likelihood of confusion with brands such as Yeti Cooler's LLC. The team is currently playing as the Utah Hockey Club. The organization still plans to announce a permanent name before the 2025-26 NHL season. I'm Tammy Trujillo.
