This is your 24/7 News Update, the latest views this hour in just four minutes. President Trump's pick for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegsett has advanced through this Senate confirmation. The Senate voted largely along party lines Thursday to advance Hegsett with the final vote of 51-49. Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins voted against him, with Murkowski saying she cannot in good conscience support his nomination. President Trump says the inflation crisis is the worst in modern history. He addressed the World Economic Forum virtually, as it took place in Switzerland today. "The entire planet will be more peaceful and prosperous as a result of this incredible momentum and what we're doing and going to do." It marked Trump's first major speech to global economic leaders. And placed the blame for rising prices on former President Biden. Millions of Americans are dealing with another day of frigid winter weather. Those from the Midwest East Coast and down to the Gulf Coast are dealing with freezing temperatures. A federal judge is rejecting former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez's latest bid for a retrial. Kristen Marks reports, "Menendez's lawyers argue that his conviction on federal corruption charges should be dismissed because the jury was given a laptop that contained material that was supposed to be excluded from trial." The judge said the defense either chose not to inspect the laptop or did review it and failed to call attention to the evidence. Menendez was found guilty last summer of accepting cash and gold bars and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt. Two businessmen were also convicted and Menendez's wife is awaiting trial on similar charges. The 71-year-old is set to be sentenced January 29th. Prosecutors are calling for a 15-year prison sentence. Kristen Marks reporting, "CNN is laying off about 210 employees." CEO Mark Thompson made the announcement in a memo to staff. The company plans to invest $70 million in new digital plans, saying it doesn't expect total headcount to fall much. I'm Brian Schook. Lawyers for Sean Diddy Combs are filing a defamation lawsuit against a man who they say falsely claimed to have videos of Combs involved in sex assaults. The $50 million lawsuit goes after Courtney Burgess, his attorney, and the parent company of Television Network News Nation. New York Governor Kathy Hochle is unveiling details on her plan to ban phones at schools throughout the state, starting next school year. Kristen Marks reports, "Hochle says war is being waged on children's minds." "Kids are being besieged with addictive algorithms, toxic social media, and cell phones that just can be so manipulative." She wants students to hand over their phones and other smart devices for the entire school day, including lunch. Schools will decide how to store them, such as with the use of lock pouches, which will be covered under the state budget. Schools will also be required to give parents an alternate way of contacting their kids. Hochle says schools with phone bands have seen a difference. "Those students told me that kids are talking to each other in the cafeteria, in between classes." She says those students are also learning more. Drinking sparkling water along with a balanced diet and regular exercise could have an impact on weight. Michael Kastner has more. The carbon dioxide in sparkling water can cause a process that boosts how much glucose the body uses, meaning less sugar is left behind is fat. That's according to a study out of Japan. It also points out, however, that sparkling water can cause or exacerbate conditions like reflux disease or irritable bowel syndrome. I'm Michael Kastner.
