"This is your 24/7 News Update, the latest news this hour in just four minutes." A rare storm in the south that dropped record snow from New Orleans to parts of Florida is moving on. The impact from the storm is expected to be felt for days in southern cities that are not used to this type of precipitation and freezing temperatures. Seven weather-related deaths were reported in Texas, including five people killed in a car crash caused by icy conditions, and two people killed by exposure to the cold. Two other deaths were reported in Georgia, and while not in the south, in Milwaukee. President Trump is defending the almost 1,500 pardons given to defendants' charge and connection with the January 6th Capitol attack. "And you know what they were there for? They were protesting the vote because they knew the election was rigged and they were protesting the vote, and that should be allowed to protest the vote." In an interview with Fox News, Trump said that most of the people were absolutely innocent and that they have served horribly at a long time. He went on to add it would be very, very cumbersome to go through all those charges when prompted about concerns that some were violent with police officers. The House has passed the Laken Riley Act, named after a murdered Georgia nursing student. The legislation was passed Wednesday, aiming to clamp down on illegal immigrants who commit non-violent crimes like theft. It will be the first bill sent to President Trump to sign into law after returning to the White House this week, the Laken Riley Act would require ICE to detain undocumented immigrants who were charged, arrested, or convicted of committing acts of burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting. The Pentagon is sending an additional 1,500 active duty troops to the southern border. Bringship reports. According to multiple reports, a U.S. official confirmed the news. That's on top of the 2,500 service members already at the border, ordered there by the Biden administration. These additional service members will deploy across the border by the end of the month. A Manhattan church is resisting President Trump's order, giving ICE agents the authority to conduct raids and arrest illegal and sensitive locations. Sarah Lee Kessler reports. Houses of worship were considered sensitive locations until Trump's executive order overturned President Obama's 2011 directive. So Reverend Leah Matthews has posted a sign outside St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church on West 87th Street. ICE and Homeland Security Officers can't enter without a sign warrant from a judge. It goes against our federal laws that protect our religious mission. The church is not only a sanctuary site, it also serves as a food pantry that feeds the hungry regardless of immigration status. I'm Sarah Lee Kessler. Now Speaker Mike Johnson announcing the creation of a new subcommittee to investigate the January the 6th Capitol riot. The Louisiana Republicans said in a statement the subcommittee's mission is to uncover the full truth that is owed to the American people. He added House Republicans are proud of their work so far in exposing what he called the false narratives peddled by the politically motivated January the 6th Select Committee during the 117th Congress. Johnson didn't clarify what false narratives he alleges were made by the original so committee, which was led by Democrat Benny Thompson and Republican Liz Cheney. Slightly more Americans are becoming satisfied with how democracy is working in the nation. Tammy Trujillo has details. A Gallup survey showed that while most Americans, over 6 in 10, are dissatisfied with how the United States democracy is working, about a third reported they were satisfied in December of 2024. That was a six point jump from the number of those who said they were satisfied in December of 2023. However, Gallup notes that satisfaction is still low overall.
