Sexual purity outside of marriage is demanded because of God the Father. It's expected because of God the Son and it's possible because of God the Spirit. Dr. Tony Evans talks about maintaining morality in a confused society. Ladies, sex is not the way to say thanks for the day. Men, sex is not the solution to your attention from. Running is. This is the alternative with Dr. Tony Evans, author, speaker, senior pastor of Oakliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas, and president of the urban alternative. Society puts the idea of sexual purity somewhere between old-fashioned and impossible. But today, Dr. Evans explains why God's idea of sanctified sex still makes sense in our morally confused culture. Let's turn to 1 Corinthians chapter 6 as we join him. God does not wince when he discusses moral issues. He speaks freely and openly and fluidly when it comes to moral concerns. He puts it front and center. Why? Simple, he made it. Since he made it, he says he deserves the right to define it. And your own growth, my own growth, and my walk with God has a tangible test, and that is moral control. We want to look at 1 Corinthians 6 today, and we want to lift the veil as best we can on an issue that many of us here today are struggling with. Some are struggling as singles and wanting to know how do you grapple with this area as a Christian single? Some as married, how do you beat this problem within the family context? This context is very interesting because it is written to a very pagan city or a church in a very pagan environment. Corinth was the Las Vegas of the day. It was the Strip. It was where everything went. On a hill in Corinth was what they called the Aco Carinthus. And on this hill was a temple, the temple of Afro-Dike, the goddess of love. And the temple had two sides. On one side, you ate dinner. On the other side were a thousand prostitutes where you had dessert. It was a place of great pleasure, and many of these people had become Christians out of that background where satisfying the needs of the flesh was automatic, like drinking water. And now they were Christians, and a question on the floor that Paul must address is, how does your faith affect your morals? How does belonging to Jesus Christ affect your libido? How does being part of the family of God affect so intimate an area of life? Now, Paul sets the stage by telling us that every kind of immorality is condemned by God, chapter 6 verse 9. Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived neither funnicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate nor homosexual. Not limited to sexual areas, of course. These covetous drunkers, revelers, swindlers inherit the kingdom. But he says, you're not those people anymore, verse 11, because you've been washed, cleansed, changed, justified, transformed by God. Now, it's one thing to have right theology, and it's another thing to have practice that supports it. It's one thing to say, this is what I believe on Sunday, it's another thing to say, this is how I live on Monday. It's one thing to talk the talk, it's another thing to walk the walk. That's your word to those who are single, whether they've never been married, they've been married and are now divorced or what have you. Then he spends Chapter 7 versus 1 through 5 discussing sexual intimacy within marriage. What will grab your attention about Chapter 6 versus 16 and 19 is that he makes a Trinitarian argument. Trinity is that statement that says that there is only one God, but he is composed of three co-equal persons. There's God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit. All three are equally God, but the three that are equally God only make one God, not three. That is the uniqueness of the Christian faith. He wants to argue that sexual purity outside of marriage is demanded because of God the Father. It's expected because of God the Son, and it's possible because of God the Spirit. Many of us falter in this area because we lose sight of its theology and simply limit ourselves to its anthropology. That is, whenever you hear Christians arguing, but I'm only human, that's an anthropological argument. That's a man's way of thinking. You used to be only human until you were washed. Verse 11 says, "You used to be only human until you were sanctified." Verse 11 says, "Until you were justified, something divine happened to you." And if you lose sight of theology, then you won't have power on the human decisions of day-to-day living. It's natural to eat, so the stomach has been created by God to take food. And for the Corinthians and for us today, sex has become a normal way of operating. It says, "I made this way." What do you expect me to do, not be human? It was a way of thinking, but he comes with theology. He says, "But God will do away with both of them, yet the body is not for immorality." What is he saying? He is saying, "Sex is not like stopping at McDonald's." He says, "While the stomach is for food, the body is not for immorality." He says, "It perverts God's plan. God created you for your body to be used for his glory, not simply to be used to satisfy your passion unless it is in the right container." And God's container for sex is marriage. So he says, "Under God the Father, sex is not an appetite to be satisfied as a gift to be cherished." Verse 15, "Do you not know that your body is a member of Christ? Shall I take the members of Christ and make the members of a harlot, because those were the ladies on the other side of the restaurant, may it never be? Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a harlot is one body with her, for he says the two shall be one, but the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with him. Whatever you do, sexually Jesus does with you. If you are a child of Christ, child of God, through partnership with Christ, he says, "You have been attached to Christ." So whatever you do, he does too. My wife, as she was acknowledged, received her doctorate of humanity letters. And while we were there, we got in a cab. One of the places we had to go, we got in a cab and we sat down. When we got to our destination, we got up. I paid the fare, but we had a problem. She had sat in chewing gum. I mean, I don't know whether it was a new dress or a new suit or not, but it looked new. And this gum, this old gum, not even new fresh gum, we got my old gum, had stuck on her and it had to be removed. It had attached itself. But you know how gum is. Gum has a way of sticking and not wanting to let go. Now we had to pull it apart. We had to lift it off. She goes into the restroom. And I don't know, but she was in there for an hour trying to use her fingernails to get rid of this gum stain. But she had it out to me and she said, "This is not working." I said, "Why not?" Because she says, "The harder I try to remove the stain, the more I'm caring up the dress." That's what he says happens when a man has intercourse with a woman. There is a sticking. You have just joined. But because there wasn't a full marriage with commitment, you care away. But some of the gum sticks. Some of you ladies are here today with scarred souls because some of the gum stuck. You thought this man was going to marry you. You thought this man was going to love you. You thought this man was going to cherish you. He was going to give his life to you. So he joined you. But then he tore away, leaving the gum behind. And you're wounded in your soul because he left the gum behind. And the more you scratch, the more you tear your soul. Ladies, sex is not the way to say thanks for a good day. [applause] Men, sex is not the solution to your tension problem. Running is. [laughter] Guy goes out and he says, "I clean my car for this day. I bought a new suit for this day. I spent a lot of money on this dinner. What do you mean shaking my hand good night? You are not to be available to undisciplined men who want to use you for their benefit. If we're not going to compromise, Christ is only one solution. Verse 18, "Flee." Flee means, "Get it up." [laughter] "Bamos. Baa. Gone. Later. Alligator. Whatever you need to do." He says, "There's no fancy way to deal with this. You must depart." God, the Holy Spirit is next. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, verse 20, who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own. For you have been bought with the price. Therefore, glorify God in your body. Temple was church. That was where you worship God, right? So guess what? Every time you have sex, you go to church. Your body is the temple. It's the church house. And every time you have sex, you're going to church. If God enjoying your worship. Because you're a temple. See, if you know Christ, you're a temple. And a moral person, single in particular, in this context, is like a man who robs a bank. He get what he wants in a hairy, but when it catches up with him, he has to pay for it for a long time. But the moral person is a depositor in the bank. He keeps saving and gaining interest so that when it comes time to make his withdrawal, he can enjoy his life savings. Some of you have nothing to enjoy because you didn't spend everything you had. Some of you, singles by the time you do get married, will be operating on low-headed regular rather than super unleaded hot attains. It gives a final word to single that actually in chapter 7 verse 1, now concerning things which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman. The word "touch" means the light of fire in the Greek. It is good men not to light a fire in a woman. That is, excite sexual passion. It's good not to do that. Now, why is it good not to do that? I'll tell you why. Because your singleness cannot be good until it is celibate. Let me put that again. God will not give you a good single life until you decide you want to celebrate life. If you're being immoral and then praying good God gives you a wife or husband, don't expect God to prioritize the answer to your prayer when you have not prioritized your commitment to him. But what did he say to the marriage? But because of immorality, let each man have his own wife and let each woman have her own husband. Now, please know that each man have his own wife. Let each wife have her own husband. But he says that Christian sex is different from non-Christian sex. You say, wait a minute, I thought it was the same thing. No, it is not. Verse 4, the wife, verse 3, let the husband fulfill his duty to his wife and likewise also the wife to her husband and the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. What's the difference? Plain and clear. Sex from a non-Christian standpoint is for me. From a non-Christian standpoint, I need to be satisfied. From a non-Christian standpoint is make me feel good. From a Christian standpoint, it is what can I do for you? Totally different. Christian couple, you revert back to a non-Christian mentality when your attitude towards sex in the marriage is I want my fulfillment. I want my satisfaction. I want my passions met. Sexuality in marriage is I want to fulfill my duty to you. Animals want to fulfill their duties to themselves. Christians want to fulfill their duties to their mates. Now some of you men, I know what you're saying. You're saying, I want to fulfill my duty to her, but she won't let me. And the reason she won't let you is because she knows you don't want to fulfill your duty to her. You want to fulfill your duty to you using her name. To fulfill your duty to your mate means that you will meet their deepest needs. And that's why a man who stops romancing his wife can forget having the passion of his wife. The only reason that she was all excited about you was because you romanced her. You didn't smell that great and you didn't look that good. All right, you all right, but you ain't that good. But what you did do was you mess with her mind. You told her how pretty she was. You told her how special she was. You pulled out the chair, you opened the door, you held her up the steps. You did all that stuff, she started saying, she started giggling and stuff because she was special and she got turned on. Why? Because you had broken her skin and grabbed her soul. And because you romanced her, there was the desire to respond. What happened? You stopped fulfilling your duty. When was the last date? When was the last compliment? When was the last love note? When was the last thing you did to mess with her mind? And if you're not doing that, you're not fulfilling your duty. Conversely, if he is doing that, lady. See, it's for the other person. And so sex is the ultimate unselfish act, which you get maximum benefit out of when you're unselfish with it. Now, the Bible says, as we come to a conclusion here, outside of marriage, no sex, celibacy. Inside of marriage, plenty of sex. That's right. Verse five, stop depriving one another except by agreement four times that you may devote yourselves to prayer, come together again, let's say and tempt you because of your lack of self-control. There's only one time sex should not be regular, apart from any physical, something you can't control, but that is a spiritual decision that this issue we're facing is more important than being intimate with one another. Let's get together and both be intimate with God. That's the exception. But that's assuming you're meeting one another's needs. You're not being selfish, demanding from one another. You may be here and you may have already lost your virginity as a single person. You may be here and you are loose living. You may be a woman here and you've been used and you allowed yourself to be used. You may be a man here and been known as a conqueror of women. And today you've learned that manhood is not your ability to have plenty of women, but your ability to hang tough with one. You may have failed in your marriage. That's why I love this book because this book doesn't only tell me what I ought not do to keep out of trouble. It tells me about the goodness of God when I get in trouble. It's called grace. We got that little stain in my wife's dress and we couldn't get it out. She scraped, she scraped, she bought it to me. I scraped, I scraped. I could not get that stain out. See, I need somebody who's a pro, who's got a machine that can weaken the the gum while protecting the cloth. I need somebody who can take this ugly stain and work with it and massage it and spot it until it lifts out the residue of the gum and gives us a brand new dress back. I need a professional. You didn't scratch that your life and it won't come out. You've torn that your soul. You don't have to throw your life away. You need a professional. You need somebody who can reach down in there and put you in his grace machine. Pour a little of the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit. Massage you with his love and make you wait as snow. You need a professional. There is a professional in the house. Jesus Christ is your professional. And if you'll come back to him, if you will recommit yourself to him, he cannot give you and will not give you back your physical virginity, but he will give you back the glory of your virginity. He will give you the glory of your virginity. He will give you the glory of your purity. He will give you the glory of your failure and turn it in the strain if you'll take it to the heavenly clique.
