Trump repeats call to move Gazans to Egypt and Jordan and doctors warn children are in urgent need
[MUSIC PLAYING] This is trending your daily rundown of news from the Middle East and around the world, brought to you by the National. From Abu Dhabi, I'm Yasmin Al-Taji. Here are today's headlines. US President Donald Trump on Thursday repeated his disputed proposal for Egypt and Jordan to take Palestinians from Gaza. Arab leaders, including in Cairo and Amman, have rejected the plan. They will do it. They will do it. What would you say? They're going to do it. OK, we do a lot for them, and they're going to do it. Mr. Trump last week suggested that Palestinians should be removed from the enclave. He spoke about two weeks into a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Meanwhile, a group of American doctors who have volunteered in Gaza told the UN on Thursday that about 2,500 children need evacuation for urgent medical treatment. Doctors have been advocating for immediate action to address Gaza's humanitarian crisis. They met UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to discuss the medical needs of civilians in the war-torn enclave. After the meeting, Mr. Guterres called for the urgent evacuation of the children. And five people have been arrested after an Iraqi refugee who burnt the Quran in public was shot dead in Sweden. Sweden's Prime Minister Olf Kristerson suggested, quote, "a foreign power," unquote, might have been involved in the killing, which took place hours before Salman Momika, an anti-Islam campaigner, was due to receive a court verdict following a trial over desecrating the Quran. In 2023, videos of public Quran burnings drew worldwide reaction and led to riots and unrest in many places. That's all for this morning's headlines.
