Number one, Sean Maniah's MRI came back clean over the last few days and without us knowing he's been throwing again. And so basically spring training has restarted for Sean Maniah. That's a best case scenario. So there's certainly a chance we'll see him in the middle of April and he'll be ready to go. Now if you recall, I was blamed as being a jinx because when Carlos Mendoza joined our show and I said to him, are you ready to announce Sean Maniah as the opening day starter? And he said, listen, we got a lot of time before opening day. It's too soon. And obviously Sean got hurt. Well, we are now less than two weeks away until opening day. So it is finally time for Carlos Mendoza to announce an opening day starter. We're about to hear from the manager. But before we do Tiki Barber, any guesses on who is getting the nod to start opening day for the New York Mets. I'm going to say it is Kodai Senga. He is going with Kodai Senga, who by the way is scheduled to pitch tonight in a spring training game on SNY, which is why we'll be on TV a little bit earlier today between 3.30 and 5.30. Well, Carlos Mendoza, the floor is yours sir. Play home. Oh, come on. Come on. And Senga, he's not like Senga, he's like just third or something. Yeah, we'll see where we are. You know, he's got a pitch today. We'll, you know, let's go one outing at a time. Play homes. You know, he earned it. You earned it. We like what we're seeing. You know, I know it's a small sample size here, but he's very encouraging. He really put himself in a really good position, shut up here early in camp, you know, like he he was ahead of everyone. But again, I think it's more like the way he's looked so far making that transition and we're comfortable with him. So there you go. I should have said clay homes. I don't know why I didn't say clay homes. I'm surprised. Last week, I said he's going to win the Cy Young. Why did I not? You know why I didn't? Why? Because I think like Aaron Boone, like how does this line up? Where is he at right now with opening day two weeks away? How does this line up? Oh, how do the days fall? How do the days fall? Which is, and speaking of that, think how different Aaron Boone is from Carlos Mendoza. They worked on the same staff for a long time. Yeah, Aaron Boone gives us a bunch of nonsense about non answers, right? Non answered nonsense when asked about who's going to be the opening day starter based on where a guy lines up and you know, which is pitching days like and we'll see how this thing times his way out. Where his causeman does is like clay homes. He earned it. He's a stud. He's awesome. He deserves to be the opening case. I'm like, dude, that part of it because I look, there is a lot of shock factor to this. And despite how good clay homes is pitched in spring training, which has been exceptional. He's been great. He's been great. But let's take a step back for a second. If I would have told you six months ago that Yankees closer. Oh, and he lost his clothes. Yes. Yankee reliever clay homes is going to sign with the Mets as a starting pitcher. And then he's going to pitch on opening day. Right. You would have thought I had 10 heads, right. And he earned pitching. It's not like there was an injury in the way that things lined up. He just happens to be the star that's going to fall in line for opening day. Colosman does is saying he was the best pitcher we have in campus. When he earned it, when you look at spring training, and obviously look, shamanize injury did impact it, but it was so early on in spring. Who knows who knows what his plan was for opening day. I tried to get it out of them three weeks ago. I didn't give us an answer, but you look at the amount of innings David Peterson's throne, Kodai Sangas throne, Paul Blackburn, Griffin canning and clay homes. And you forget their resumes. Just forget their resumes. You just look at what they've done in spring training. He's right. Yeah. Clay homes has earned it. Now, I don't know if that's the number one reason he's given them the opening day start, but when he says he earned it, if you look at the way he's performed in spring training, he has. And maybe it's also a message to clay. Clay homes is trying a big career change this year. Yeah, that's a good point. And so here's Mendoza saying, you know what, buddy? I'm going to give you opening day. I'm going to empower you. I'm going to empower you. You're going to be matched up with the other races, in this case from Berwaldes, and you're getting the opening day start. And for any Met fan or Yankee fan who wants to mock the Mets, I'm going to be consistent about this because we talked about this a few days ago with the Yankees. Opening day is symbolism. It doesn't mean anything other than that. Right. So my reaction to clay homes starting opening day. Okay, great. Like it doesn't affect me one way or the other because it doesn't mean anything. Yeah. Well, maybe in the short term for clay, it's an accomplice, but I'm saying it doesn't mean anything. I would argue against that though. I would say it does mean something. It means that Carlos Mendoza might be saying Clay homes, I want you to be our ace. Yeah, I don't look at it that way. I know, but I'm not saying that he's you are, but maybe he is. Well, I mean, that he's earned it. I mean, it was very little ambiguity. Where'd you get those shoots? Easy. They're from DSW because DSW has the exact right shoes for whatever you're into right now. Make Clay Homes feel empowered as you mentioned a little bit earlier, but maybe he actually feels that way. We started opening day for the Mets last year. I don't even know. Tommy, do you remember? Of course not. Of course. No, I don't remember. Hold on. Let me think for a second. I don't remember things like. Is it 70? Oh, no. Is it Severino? It was, and how could we forget? It was, what's his face? With the guy? No, you know, the guy. No, come on, T. We had one shirt on the other day. Come on. You don't remember? Somebody feed me this, please. It was, uh... I'm not feeding anybody. I know the answer. I want to see if you guys remember. It's beyond obvious at this point. Tommy has no idea. No one will lead us. Tommy has no idea. The point is not to make anyone look bad. It's the point that it's not memorable. Who was it? Jose Quintana. Oh. But my point is, all right, let's take this back further. 2022. Are you over there? Why? Okay, so I'll stop. Why was it? Why was it Jose Quintana last year? Who else should have been? Exactly. That's the point. Who should have started coming into the season last year? The entire rotation was new. He was the only guy coming back. He was the veteran. So there wasn't a symbolism. There wasn't an "he earned it". No. It wasn't like he just said with Cleo. I'm going to be honest with you. So the only time to me, in my lifetime, that this does matter, there's a symbolism to it, is when it is a true, true ace. So Jacob de Grom mattered to me. Right. Dwight Eugene Gooden mattered to me. I think. But Garrett Cole. Garrett Cole's an unquestioned ace. When he's healthy, he's the opening day starter. And I can see why that would matter to you. But I think when you're dealing with kind of this new met world that we're living in, and really ever since Jake left, because even with Scherzer and Verlander, I was like, I don't care. I don't care. And they're not who they used to be anyway. So I didn't even care then when they were debating between Verlander and Scherzer. Do you guys remember who started that opening day? I actually don't because I think they both got hurt. Verlander definitely got hurt, but he got hurt on opening day. So he wasn't the opening day starter. It was definitely that Verlander didn't pitched a lot, like a month later. I think it was Max. And the year before that 2022, you know, started opening day. No, Tyler McGill. Yeah, I actually do remember that. So when there isn't an obvious guy, and I love Kodai Sangha, don't get me wrong. Kodai was great in 2023. He hasn't earned that yet either. So I kind of look at opening day as it's just not moving me on that kind of honor. Now, as far as Clay's concern congrats to him, I want to warn my fellow Met fans about something Tommy already probably feels it. The Met fan is going to get mocked mercifully by the Yankee fan. Why? Clay Holmes has started opening day. Well, there's a rotation. But I think he's actually going to do very well. I think he's going to do well as well, but that's not going to stop the Yankee fan from mocking Clay Holmes, pitching on opening day. Well, they can mock him, but if they're wrong, because he pitches, I don't know, six innings and gives up one run, then who's mocking? Well, look, if Clay has a great year, Tommy gets the ultimate victory. Because remember he has that bet with Sean Morash, who's going to have a better year, Clay Holmes versus Max Freed. And if you ever won that one, that's that's a huge win. Because it was so like crazy to even suggest at the time. And he got a long way to go. You haven't done anything yet. I mean, the season hasn't started. And we're not looking at spring training as any kind of a factor. But yeah, if Clay is a great year, Met fans will get the last left. I'm just warning the Met fan that as this news trickles out, that Clay Holmes is the Mets opening day starter. In fact, I haven't even looked yet. I'm about to check. This is my test. I'm going to check the Twitter feed of my co-worker, Keith McPherson. Do you think he has trolled the Mets about Clay Holmes? No, 14 seconds ago. I am to am. He retweets FAN. Clay Holmes is the opening day starter. Yeah. And Keith's tweet is many predicted this on brand. That's a mocking. He was that mocking? I mean, what does that mean? That on brand? Yeah, on brand. Means it's on brand for the Mets to have to take a take a Yankee and then try to I don't know, elevate him. So is that just like seven last year? Tommy, is this not a mind? By the way, Keith's every right to do it. I'm just warning Met fans that Yankee fans are going to do it. So I appreciate that Keith without even getting a signal from me is already playing along with this. But that is a mocking. Yeah, this is my thinking. If I'm thinking like Keith here, couple of weeks of opening day, this is like his on a scale of one to 10, 10 being the highest troll. This is five and you build up to 10 for opening day. You don't want to give your 10 here today. You build it off. But this is this is a troll. And all I'm saying is Keith is going to represent a lot of Yankee fans who are going to take this opportunity that Clay Holmes has been announced as the opening day starter to mock the Mets and met fans. Now, I will help you out with this. You could just chuckle and say, yeah, who cares? Because at the end of the day, the results are going to determine this. Clay Holmes has to go out and have a good year. And I'm with you, Tiki. I've gained confidence. That's why we're making that Clay Holmes say young bet. Yes. But so far, he hasn't done anything as great as his spring training has been. Tommy doesn't even want spring training. So you can't count it for Clay Holmes and not counted for everything else that's happened. So you're disqualified from counting spring training. Well, I know his Clay Holmes is the opening day starter and Max Fried is not. So it says one nothing movie in the first inning. And he's been lights out. And I don't watch spring training, but I do see the highlights on social media. Then they look good. No, he is right. It is one nothing, though, because Max Fried is not picture but a danny. But again, it did. It doesn't matter. So you created a cool indoor retreat.
