What Does it Mean to Be Salt & Light | Chris Gill

The Gospel according to Matthew introduces Jesus’ revolutionary vision of life in the Kingdom of God, as captured in the Sermon on the Mount. These teachings challenge us to reframe our understanding of “the good life” from cultural ideals to God’s eternal truth. This series invites us to embrace Jesus’ countercultural Way, allowing His words to transform how we live, love, and reflect His light in the world.

What do we mean by “The Good Life”?

The word “blessed” used by Jesus in the opening lines of the sermon on the mount is the Greek word “markarios”. It is a word used to describe someone that you think is experiencing God’s blessing, favour and abundance. The equivalent Hebrew word is “ashrey”(Jesus spoke Aramaic) , which can be translated, “the good life”.

Markarios can be translated, “Fortunate, happy, flourishing, blessed”. This is a word that is used to describe the circumstances of another person and saying, “they are living the good life”.

What would the good life look like to you? How would you define it? Being surrounded by your loved ones? Freedom to travel the world and visit exotic places? Free barista made coffee on tap? Enjoying what you do for a living? This is what the word “Blessed” means in the gospel of Matthew, Jesus is describing the circumstances of one who is living the good life. ►► SUBSCRIBE to our Youtube channel to get more encouraging messages and content: https://bit.ly/2VNxKnl
