Good morning, and welcome to Simply Politics from China. It's Thursday, July 25. On today's show, substantial talks with China echo with Russia, and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister releases important signals in China. Plus, the United States emphasizes the importance of Pakistan's political stability for its economic development. Please coverage in more, up next. I'm David, and you're listening to Simply Politics from China. We start off with recent developments in China's foreign relations. Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba in Guangzhou. Wang Yi emphasized China's commitment to promoting a political solution to the crisis. Here to discuss this further is James, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about these talks? Yes, David. During the talks, Wang Yi reiterated China's firm commitment to promoting a political solution to the crisis. He stated that China supports all efforts conducive to peace, and is willing to continue to play a constructive role in ceasefire, cessation of war, and restoration of peace talks. And what was the response from the Ukrainian side? Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba expressed Ukraine's readiness to engage in dialogue and negotiations with Russia. This was described as a very in-depth and specific dialogue by a source from the Ukrainian delegation visiting China. This meeting has drawn significant international attention. Can you elaborate on that? Indeed, the international community has been closely watching the Sino-Ukrainian Foreign Minister's talks. The focus has been on Ukraine's signal of willingness to start peace talks with Russia and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister seeking consensus with China. Russian media reported that Russian presidential press secretary Pescov said Kuleba's remarks are consistent with Russia's position, and Russia has never refused to negotiate with Ukraine. And what about China's role in these international affairs? China's positive and constructive role in international affairs is being recognized. In an interview with U.S. media, a Ukrainian citizen said that China's diplomacy is very powerful and expressed hope that China can help Ukraine end the war. Thanks for that report, James. Shifting our focus to another significant political development, the United States has urged Pakistan to protect the rights of all its citizens, including the freedom of speech and assembly. This comes amidst a military-backed crackdown on opposition supporting the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Here to discuss this further is Michael, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about the U.S.? He stands on this issue. Certainly, David. U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blom, emphasized at a seminar in Islamabad that upholding constitutionally guaranteed rights is crucial for Pakistan's economic progress. He stated that protecting human rights for all is not only a fundamental pillar of democracy, but also a key component of a vibrant and stable society that harnesses the talents and contributions of all citizens for the benefit of the nation. And what implications does this have for Pakistan's economic growth? Blom pointed out that without such stability, the prospects for investment and economic growth seem less certain. However, he did not directly name Pakistan's political stakeholders. This comes at a time of political turmoil in Pakistan. Can you provide some context? Indeed, Pakistan is currently facing prolonged political turmoil, stemming from the ouster of former Prime Minister Khan in a parliamentary no-confidence vote in 2022, followed by his imprisonment last August. The United Nations has called his imprisonment legally baseless. Thanks for that report, Michael. Shifting our focus to Japan now, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has recently expressed his intention to formulate new legislation to support the domestic production of next-generation semiconductors. This comes during his visit to the Rapetus factory under construction in Chitose City, Hokkaido. Here to discuss this further is Celeste, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about Kishida's plans? Yes, David. Prime Minister Kishida has stated that he hopes to submit the necessary bills for mass production to the diet as soon as possible. The goal is to submit these bills during the extraordinary diet session in the fall, with the aim of enhancing the competitiveness of cutting-edge technologies from the perspective of economic security. And what about the financing required for this initiative? To attract the enormous financing required in the future, the government is considering providing guarantees. However, the Ministry of Finance is showing some reluctance, which may become a focal point of the new legislation. What is the government's strategy for supporting relevant Japanese domestic manufacturers? Kishida stated that the government will target relevant Japanese domestic manufacturers and expressed his desire to support investment in research and development on a large scale and in a planned manner over several fiscal years while securing the necessary funds. The semiconductor industry requires massive capital investment in equipment. The purpose of government guarantees is to have the state repay loans in the event of default, thereby eliminating concerns on the part of financial institutions. Thanks for that report, Celeste. Shifting our focus to Europe now, in a recent development, two significant EU meetings will not be held in Hungary. This decision appears to be sending a clear signal. Here to discuss this further is Abi, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about this decision? Unfortunately, David, the details surrounding this decision are quite sparse at the moment. The reasons behind the decision to not hold these important EU meetings in Hungary have not been explicitly stated. What could be the potential implications of this move? While it's difficult to say without more information, such a decision could potentially be seen as a political statement. It could be interpreted as a signal of disapproval or concern regarding current events or policies within Hungary. However, without further details, any interpretation would be purely speculative at this point. We'll certainly keep an eye on this situation as it develops. Thanks for that report, Abi. And with that, we wrap up our stories for today. Thanks for listening to Simply Politics from China. We'll see you back here tomorrow. [MUSIC] [BLANK_AUDIO]
