Carey, beloved by her peers and colleagues, left the Santa Barbara Unified School District amid a wave of voluntary departures, 26, as of July 31, in the past year. Carey began her career in Santa Barbara Unified as a paraeducator, became a history teacher, and then principal at Dos Pueblos High School.
