Santa Barbara Talks Podcast 106: UCSB Economist Peter Rupert

UCSB economist Peter Rupert breaks down the theory and data behind rent control, the latest housing protection program to hit Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara City Council will vote on the topic on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Rupert says that rent control has never worked successfully in any community in the world. He says economist Milton Friedman and Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal agree that rent control doesn't work. Rupert shares data and studies about the economics behind rent control. A better solution, he said, is for the government to just give the money directly to those in need for rent, rather than capping the amount of rent property owners can charge. Rupert, the director of the Economic Forecast Project also talks about the state of the economy coming out of COVID-19 and what's ahead finally for Santa Barbara.
