Good morning, and welcome to Simply Politics from China. It's Friday, July 26. On today's show, former political member of the Beijing military region Gu Xiangqing passes away at the age of 93. Plus, China's representative states that China will never accept the United States on the Ukrainian issue. It's coverage and more up next. I'm David, and you're listening to Simply Politics from China. We start off with some somber news. We have just learned that comrade Gu Xiangqing, a retired cadre and former political commissar of the Beijing military region, has passed away at the age of 93. Abby, can you tell us more about Gu Xiangqing's life and career? Certainly, David. Gu Xiangqing was born in 1931 in Wafangdian city, Leonning province. He joined the army in December 1947 and became a member of the Communist Party of China in November 1949. Throughout his career, he held several significant positions in the military. Could you elaborate on some of the roles he held? Of course. Gu Xiangqing served as a propaganda cadre in the political department of an army corps and division. He was also the director of the propaganda department of the political department of the Guangzhou military region engineering corps. He held the position of political commissar of the 104th regional engineering command of the Guangzhou military region and was the deputy political commissar of the Ling Ling military sub-district in Hunan province. He also served as the deputy political commissar and acting political commissar of the Xiaoyang military sub-district and the political commissar of the Hunan provincial military region. Later, he became the deputy political commissar of the former Guangzhou military region, political commissar of the former Chengdu military region, and finally, the political commissar of the former Beijing military region. That's quite an impressive career. What about his contributions to the Communist Party of China? Gu Xiangqing was a member of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. His military career was also marked by significant promotions. He was awarded the rank of Major General in September 1988, promoted to Lieutenant General in July 1990, and finally promoted to General in May 1994. His passing is certainly a significant event. Thanks for that report, Abby. Turning our attention to Italy, Prime Minister Maloney is set to visit Beijing for five days from the 27th to the 31st of July. This comes shortly after the departure of the Ukrainian Foreign Minister. Michael, can you tell us more about the purpose of this visit? Certainly, David. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that Prime Minister Maloney will hold talks with Xi Jinping, Li Cheng, and Zhao Laiji during his visit. It is widely believed that the primary focus of Maloney's trip is economic and trade purposes, with a name to mend the relationship rift caused by Italy's withdrawal from the Belt and Road Initiative at the end of last year. So, this visit is seen as a move to repair relations. Are there any other high-level visits planned? Yes, Italian President Madarella is also scheduled to visit China in October. The successive visits by the Prime Minister and President seem to confirm the notion of repairing relations. Interesting. And what about after Beijing, where is Prime Minister Maloney headed? After his stay in Beijing, Maloney will travel to Shanghai to meet with Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jin-ing. Chen is considered one of the top Chinese Communist Party officials most trusted by Xi Jinping and is seen as an emerging political star. Thanks for that report, Michael. Staying on the topic of China, the country's permanent representative to the United Nations, Wukong, has stated that China will not accept the U.S. shifting blame and responsibility on the Ukraine issue. Bella, can you tell us more about this statement? Certainly, David. Wukong made this statement during the Security Council's deliberation on providing weapons to Ukraine. He emphasized that the ongoing Ukraine crisis is causing the most suffering to civilians. He warned that the continued flow of weapons and ammunition into the battlefield will only worsen the crisis, intensify the war, and lead to more innocent casualties. And what did he say about the impact on regional peace and stability? Wukong expressed concern that the situation could make the hope for peace and an end to the war more remote. He also warned of far-reaching and extensive negative impacts on regional peace and stability. Thanks for that report, Bella. Shifting our focus now, a meeting was recently held by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee to study and deploy flood control, flood fighting, and disaster relief work. The meeting was presided over by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee. Celeste, can you tell us more about this meeting? Unfortunately, the details of the meeting are not provided in the article. However, it's clear that the focus of the meeting was on flood control, flood fighting, and disaster relief work, which are critical issues in many parts of China. The fact that the meeting was presided over by Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, underscores the importance that the Chinese government is placing on these issues. Thanks for that significant update, Celeste. And with that, we wrap up our stories for today. Thanks for listening to Simply Politics from China. We'll see you back here tomorrow.
