5 Sports Update FIFA officials announced the punishment for the Canadian women's soccer team following a drone-spying scandal that came to light earlier this week. FIFA deducted six points from Canada at the Paris Olympics. Three coaches were banned for one year, and the Canadian Soccer Federation was fined $226,000. The discipline came just days after it was discovered two assistant coaches were caught using drones despite on New Zealand's practices before their opening game. Head Coach Beth Brieceman was promptly suspended by the National Soccer Federation when the news broke, then removed from the tournament. The points deduction, if upheld, does not eliminate Canada from the tournament, but Canada would have to win all three games in Group A and hope to advance with three points likely as a runner-up in the standings. 3. In other Olympic news, US forward Kevin Durant likely will be available to play in the first American game Sunday against Serbia. Durant missed a five-exhibition game leading up to the Olympic tournament when asked about Durant's status, head coach Steve Kerr said he hopefully can play. That would give Team USA 12 available players. Durant did practice with the team on Saturday, but starting center Joel Embiid did not work out due to illness. The US women's basketball team is preparing for its Olympic opener against Japan on Monday. The squad is led by two-time WNBA most valuable players, Asia Wilson and Brianna Stewart, along with five-time gold medalist Diana Taurazzi. The Americans are seeking an eight consecutive gold medal and are on a 55-game Olympic winning streak. While the team is aware of past success, Taurazzi says they don't promise you anything going forward, and the only focus right now is winning gold this year. Baseball News, New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a strained left calf. Senga was sidelined by a shoulder injury since spring training. He was hurt again Friday in the sixth inning of his season debut against the Atlanta Braves. The 31-year-old right-hander strained his calf when he bolted away from the mound to make way for teammate Pete Alonso to catch a pop-up. New York manager Carlos Mendoza said an MRI showed a high-grade strain, adding it was fair to say Senga is pretty much done for the regular season. Prior to the injury, Senga struck out nine batters and just over five innings to help for them to earn an eight-four victory over the Braves. Senga allowed just two hits and retired his final ten batters. For more baseball news, visit foxports.com or download the Fox Sports app. My Bob Mortale. More on the Fox Sports app and foxsports.com.
