The star-studded USA men's basketball team lived up to the hype and it's 2024 Olympics opener Sunday as LeBron James and Kevin Durant powered a 11084 demolition of a Serbia team led by defending NBA MVP Nicole O'Koch. James finished with 21.7 rebounds, 9 assists and has returned to the Olympics for Team USA after a 12 year absence. Durant came off the bench after missing all of USA's warm-up scrimmages due to a cap injury and authored a dominant first half where he made all of his first eight shot attempts including five from three point range. Durant finished with a game high 23 points and his first five on five basketball action since his Phoenix Suns were eliminated from the NBA playoffs in April. James' fellow team USA starters Steph Curry, Devin Booker and Drew Holiday all finished in double-figure scoring as did Anthony Edwards off the bench, Joel and B continued to struggle in his starting center role for Team USA however with four points, two rebounds and three fouls and limited action while he was booed by the French crowd for spurning France's national team in favor of the US. The men's basketball team, not the only US squad that seemed to return to dominant form in Sunday's Olympic action, the US women's soccer national team had its first statement performance of the Emma Hayes era with a 4-1 blowout of heavyweight Germany in Olympic's group stage play. The US overcame some early defensive lapses with three first half goals including two from star forward Sophia Smith, striker Mallory Swanson who was injured during the US's under scored for her third goal in two Olympic matches so far as did veteran substitute Lynn Williams For more about how the victory signals a return to elite status for the US women's national team, check out the latest from Lakein Lipman at boxports.com and the Fox Sports app. And in MLB trade deadline news, the Chicago Cubs made a somewhat surprising pickup on Sunday by acquiring third baseman Isaac Paredes from the Tampa Bay Rays. It's a return for Paredes, the Mexico native who originally signed with the Cubs as an amateur free agent before stints with Detroit and Tampa Bay. In return for the 2024 All-Star, the Cubs are sending their own third baseman Christopher Morrell and two pitching prospects back to Tampa Bay. Morrell was removed mid-game after the news broke and seen emotionally hugging teammates in the dugout at Wrigley Field. Though the Cubs are five games below 500 and 10 games out of first place in the NL Central, Paredes is under team control for several more seasons, making this more of a long-term move for Chicago.
