“L.A. Loves Alex's Lemonade Stand returns for their 12th annual cookout in Los Angeles at UCLA’s Royce Quad scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024, and tickets are now on sale. The 2023 event was an overwhelming success raising more than $1.3 million for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Presented at Royce Quad on the campus of UCLA, the cookout is always a perfect day for chefs and fans to come together to support childhood cancer research. The list of participating high-profile chefs includes the top rung of L.A. chefs and prominent culinary talents visiting from across the USA. Also on display are premium wines and standout spirits.” Since the beginning the local event has been coordinated by Restaurateur Caroline Styne, and Chefs Suzanne Goin and David Lentz. Joining us to preview L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade is Co-Founder of the L.A. event, Chef Suzanne Goin and her daughter, Alex Lentz, heading the local Kids Campaign.”

When we last left Team USA 2025 in training on the long road to Lyon, France they were on the way to New Orleans for the Americas competition. “The U.S. is now heading to Lyon, France in January 2025 to compete at the Bocuse d’Or, the world’s most prestigious culinary competition! Team USA Head Chef Stefani De Palma and Commis Bradley Waddle secured their spot on the international stage following a 5-hour and 30-minute battle in New Orleans, LA. They faced eight countries from North, Central, and South America. Team USA secured the Gold and was selected to advance along with two-person teams from Canada (Silver), Mexico (Bronze), Chile (4th place), and Colombia (5th place). When they reach Lyon, Team USA will once again face these finalists from the Americas selection, alongside finalists from Africa, Asia, and Europe—a total of 24 teams from around the world are vying for the coveted Gold medal.” Chefs Stefani and Bradley are our guests.

“The Bartolotta Restaurants is a nationally recognized restaurant and catering organization co-founded by the late restaurateur Joe Bartolotta and his brother, two-time James Beard Award-winning Chef Paul Bartolotta. Since the opening of its flagship restaurant, Ristorante Bartolotta dal 1993, The Bartolotta Restaurants has grown to become the premier culinary brand in the Greater Milwaukee region, offering first-class service and cuisine across a portfolio of 17 one-of-a-kind restaurants and catering facilities, including fine dining, upscale casual, upscale food hall, pizzeria, and quick-casual concepts. Additionally, its presence as a forward-thinking, respected, and community-minded company has produced a charitable arm, Care-a-lotta, which supports numerous nonprofit organizations throughout Milwaukee.” Restaurateur and Chef Paul Bartolotta joins us.

Our own Chef Andrew Gruel, the menu-maker behind the full-service Calico Fish House (in the Sunset Beach area of Huntington Beach) provides another timely and informative “Ask the Chef” segment where he responds to listeners’ thoughtful inquiries. The short and always eagerly anticipated Hatch Chile season has arrived. Chef Andrew discusses why these coveted peppers from New Mexico have such an enthusiastic and loyal following.

All of this and heaping helpings of extra deliciousness on this week’s not-to-miss show!

Good morning Southern California and welcome. If you're food obsessed you've come to the right place. Join us for the next two hours and you won't go away hungry. One of the first American culinary icons Julia Child said, "People who love to eat are always the best people." We agree. Live from the AMA 30 KLAA studios at Angel Stadium and Anaheim, The SoCal Restaurant Show is on the air. Welcome back. It is The SoCal Restaurant Show and happily we're here with you every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 12 noon right here on AMA 30 KLAA, the home of Angels Baseball 2024 and you can also catch us on the AMA 30 KLAA Angels app. I'm Andy Harris the executive producer and co-host of the show. Happy to have you out there. Do appreciate you spending part of your Saturday morning with us. Also as far as the halos are concerned they are up in Oakland. It is the third game tonight and a four-game set with them. My colleague Chef Andrew Grool of the Calico Fish House in the Sunset Beach area of Huntington Beach on Pacific Coast Highway. We'll be joining us a little later in the show with his usual Ask the Chef segment and today marks the official start of the Hatch Chili Pepper season, the fresh hatch chilies and Chef Andrew will be explaining why this is such a wonderful ingredient to add to some of your cooking and what is special about these hatch peppers that are only available for about six weeks. So again Chef Andrew is going to be giving the chefs perspective on that. Do keep up with us on social media. We're on all the platforms. The idea there is just to enhance and enrich what we do here on Saturday morning. We throw in some visuals where we visit a restaurant or talk about a food product. We definitely like to post images of those items. Sometimes videos where we can get it. And again it's just a way of connecting our audience with us between Saturdays. So website is easy at socalrestaurantshow.com. Facebook is socal restaurant show. Send us a tweet if you like and many of you do at socal restaurant. And as we love to say for the very best and provocative food imagery, Instagram to @ socalrestaurantshow. And we're enthusiastically presented to you each and every week by Melissa's World Variety Produce and West Coast Prime Meats. And if you check in at the Melissa's website at Melissa's.com you will see a list in Southern California of the area retailers, grocery stores that are doing weekend hatch chili roasting. So they do all the work for you. All you have to do is bring those hatch chilies home, bag them, and put them in the freezer and away you go. So just a real added convenience as far as all of that's concerned. A little community bulletin board note. We've been talking about for the last couple of weeks Long Beach Burger Week, which is on in Long Beach. And this has a couple dozen participating Long Beach restaurants that are doing special burgers for Burger Week. And they really roll out the red carpet on this. The chefs extend themselves. And all of these are generally priced at a value and only available for the week of Long Beach Burger Week. So for those of you that have missed it, you have today and you have tomorrow on Long Beach Burger Week. Otherwise you're waiting till 2025. So just a little word to the wise. Also the Paris Olympics kicked off last night. If you had a chance to see any of the opening ceremonies, leave it to the French and leave it to the Parisians. What a spectacular opening ceremony that was on the Senn River. I mean unbelievable. And it was pouring rain for the most part of the opening ceremonies. And they did not let that get in the way of the athletes celebrating the opening of the Olympics or the pageantry that was part of all of that. Now there are many area restaurants that are doing Parisian themed restaurant items for the next two weeks to tie in with the Paris Games. Just have time to tell you about one which I think is kind of fun. There is a wonderful French cafe that's in Hollywood called Mr. T. Yes the letter T is in Tom. They are at the corner of Sycamore and Romaine in Hollywood. The street address is 953 North Sycamore. And there is a tradition in Paris where neighboring restaurants join forces occasionally to do collaborative dishes. So the proprietor of Mr. T has got a great sense of humor. His name is Guillaume. You know you think he's gonna do something very fancy in French that has got 50 techniques to do it. Nope. Mr. T's has paired with pinks the famous Hollywood hot dog place. And what they are doing today and tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. is they are doing four pinks hot dogs with Parisian style flavorings that have been developed by the executive chef at Mr. T who is quite talented. You can also pair that with four different French inspired cocktails. And oh they have a DJ spinning French tunes. And you can also watch the Olympics on this 75 inch TV to go along with all of this. But again I just love the fun. Just a few of the selections are they're doing the Notre Dame which is succulent beef bournon with crispy onion rings. The Louvre which is velvety bournet sauce paired with tangy sweet pickles. The Champs de Lise which is melted raclette cheese complemented by Aiolian chives. That's the one for me. And then you saw a lot of the Eiffel Tower on television last night. The Eiffel Tower is rich Gruyere cheese with caramelized sweet onions. And you can also add French fries. So again that is it Mr. T's in Hollywood today and tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. And again I just love it when you know restaurants go that extra mile to do something that is inspired. As always we have a full show today. Probably the most admired charity food and wine benefit that's done every year is Alex's Lemonade stand. L.A. loves Alex's Lemonade stand. It is back on October 5th Saturday at UCLA for their 12th annual cookout. This is the best of L.A. chefs with prominent award-winning chefs from all over the country getting together to support childhood cancer research. Can't get more fundamental and basic basic than that. The co-founder of the event chef Suzanne Goan a multiple James Beard award winner is going to be on with us with her daughter Alex Lance not the same Alex of Alex's lemonade stand coincidence with the same name who heads up the local kids campaign and we'll get a little preview of what they're doing again always a greatly anticipated event that raises significant money for childhood cancer research got to love that. Then we go back to New Orleans when we last left team USA 2025 on the wrong on the long road to the Boku store international culinary competition in Lyon in January. They were competing in the Americas competition to decide which five teams from the Americas North Central and South America have the right win the right to go on to Lyon so we'll be catching up with them. Then a restaurateur that is very known well known in Milwaukee and Wisconsin Paul Bartolota the Bartolota restaurants in Milwaukee will be joining us a long time friend of the so-called restaurant show and we get a chance to catch up with him he's had a very busy couple of weeks not the least of which is the Republican National Convention being in Milwaukee and also opening a new restaurant in the last week and he was also in New Orleans for the Americas competition for the Boku store. So as usual a full plate you are listening to the so-called restaurant show when we return it's LA loves Alex's lemonade stand we're proudly presented by Melissa's World Variety produce and West Coast prime meets we'll be right back.
