Back live Gillette Stadium and other Patriots training camp recap podcast here on Six Rings and Football Things, Andy Jumbel Hart here. Fresh off four hours of the Greschen Fourier show. Overlooking training camp practice. W-E-E-I dot coms. Thomas Carroll also joining us. And we're going to break down everything we saw in day three of Patriots training camp. They get a day off after today, day off on Saturday. It was another day in shorts and helmets. Basically some pants, but they did add shells to the attire, those little foam pads underneath their jerseys, setting the table news of the day. Jabril Peppers signed a three year contract extension. 24 million base value, 30 million dollars that he could earn. I love it. We all have talked a lot on this podcast about how much we love watching in play as physicality. His attitude, I also think is important, his energy. Gerard Mayo spoke about that practice when he confirmed pre-practice, when he confirmed the extension. Matthew Guteron was on the field practicing. Devon Godshaw was on the field practicing. Gerard Mayo said his absence yesterday was not contract related. I'll leave that up to listeners to decide whether they believe him or not. Drake May was on the field. We had plenty of quarterback reps. We had a lot of energy from Jacobi Brissette. I thought he has become sort of a hype man for Drake May. Every time Drake May does something good. Jacobi runs out, celebrates with him. I think that right there is part of why he was the perfect guy for the job. He's in for this team for this year right now. So, Thomas Carroll. First of all, Thomas Carroll. Yes. Hello. Do you go by Thomas? Tom. Tom Carroll. I don't know why I called him Thomas. I don't know why he has two first names either, but we'll get into that in a future podcast. What did you think about? And let's start with the story of camp, the story of the day. The story of every day is Drake May. What did you think about Drake May today when there was another pretty touchdown, or another pretty deep ball to Polk? And then, should I say regrettable pass that ended up a pick six interception for Matthew Judon? I'd call it a mixed bag. And it's something that you're going to see with a rookie quarterback coming from a college system that wasn't all that pro style. And now he's here trying to learn the pro offense. And you saw his athleticism, you saw his arm talent, you saw his willingness to make a throw like that to Polk, who was pretty covered up. I want to say there was at least two guys over there. And another one sprinting across the field, who in a game situation, probably would have taken Polk's head off, but still a beautiful ball, beautiful catch. So, mixed bag would be what I'd call it. And Judon getting that pick six. You know, I like seeing that from Judon, right? Like that's going to happen. Judon's a super talented guy. That's why he wants to get paid. And we can get more into who should get paid and who shouldn't later on. But mixed bag, we'll call it mixed bag. And that's in line with kind of what I've been talking about. I've even back to the spring set up and down progression, where there's like ups and then oops, backwards down. But overall, you feel like there is sort of a building of comfort. And you know that there's more of the offense and he's doing more. I know Jacobi Brissette, all the quarterbacks held press conferences after practice. And Jacobi Brissette talked about less pre-snap penalties today. And that like step-like improvement. Like you're going to make mistakes. It's a new offense, new coordinator, new players, just offensive line combinations. I mean, we've even seen some issues with snaps. That is something they need to work out. I even saw, you know, might have been, I forgot who it was exactly, but they switched. And they were literally in the huddle doing that like, oh, there's a new center. I better get a couple snaps in before we go out and try to run a play. They're not there yet. They're not ready to play a game. But as Bill Bell check used to say, I checked the schedule and there's no game today. There's no game tomorrow. So they are evolving. The other thing we've talked a little bit about and continue to need to stress is what Mayo said. Defense is always going to be ahead of the offense, especially this defense where the scheme and the coaching is continuity. The players is continuity like they are way ahead and they should be way ahead. But I think there are flashes. The question I wanted to ask you beyond Drake, Maine, the quarterbacks. And we're going to talk about that every one of these podcasts. The offensive line yesterday was not a great day. There was a lot of pressure for guys. Even today, there were a couple boot plays I watched where both quarterbacks per set on one and may on another. They did the wide zone boot and it's supposed to be nobody there. And there were like two defenders in their mug right away. On a day when we saw a curve for at right tackle, some snaps over there, we saw Caden Wallace at left tackle, some snaps over there. And we saw quite honestly a lot of kind of moving parts in both the first and the second unit on the offensive line. Are you seeing advancements in the line play execution feeling like you're even getting a feel for the five best guys are going to play according to Jarod Mayo? Yeah, he keeps saying we're going to play the five best guys. I have no idea who the five best guys are at this point because they're playing like 12 guys and they're playing all sorts of positions. That's how you're going to say they're playing like crap, but yeah, they're playing 12 guys. Go ahead. And well, it's not great. Look, until they get the pads on, we can't really tell what the hell is going on with the offensive lineman. And if you could concretely say anything about the line from today, I'd be saying that you're probably lying because there's so much movement. David Andrews is the starting center. Thank you. OK, there you go. That is a fact. You nailed that. Not lying. You nailed that one. So look, I just think that from what we saw out of this group last year and then what we're seeing now early in camp, it's just still way too early. And look, I don't feel great about it because you'd love to come into camp and know the at least like six to seven guys that are going to be in the mix for that five and what positions they're going to play. We don't know any of that right now. And that's what scares me to death about putting Drake May out there. I still would. That's a conversation for a different day. OK, so we're going to get into Devon Godshaw and his contract because we talked a lot about Judon yesterday and the day before because he had in his press conference. Then yesterday he had his little meeting with Robert Kraft on the field and I chose to speculate and see and he didn't get a deal done. Maybe he was negotiating Gabriel Peppers deal for him. He had mentioned that he was jealous of seeing other people get contracts. So he asked me more jealous today seeing Gabriel Peppers. Although I tell him, hey Matthew, I'll give you Gabriel Peppers exact contract. Three years, 24 million locked up right now. Let's do it. I bet your Judon wouldn't necessarily want to do that. And we'll get into Godshaw. He's back out there, but I wanted to talk about a couple of guys that we see, but they're not really participating. Demario Douglas, not really doing a lot of, I get to talk real quick. I get to interrupt myself. There's a robot. Is that a robot lawnmower? Is that a robot line painter? There is a little robot roaming away down on the far end of the practice field where it used to be Dante's inferno. I think it's painting lines. Oh yeah, the green thing, yeah, yeah. Is that green? Is that an eye robot field painter? It's like a huge Roomba, Roomba, Roomba. Roomba, there we go, Roomba. Okay. I think it is. It's painting those boxes. Okay, I'm a child. We're distracted. There's a cool robot painting on the field back to football, but Demario Douglas, not really taking part. He's been doing a lot of conditioning, a lot of drills, but then not a big factor in sort of seven on sevens, those things. Today, the second straight day Christian Barmore, not really participating, he came out to practice late, kind of just watching and lumbering around. Marte Mapu was with him. Of those guys, I mean, at least two of them are seen as core important players. You just gave $90 million or whatever to Barmore to be the centerpiece of your defense. And I think most people, if you ask them who the Patriots number one wide receiver is, would say Demario Douglas. So should I be concerned at all about those two guys missing the first few days of non-contact, non-padded start to training camp? I would say, yeah, I'd say you put the the concern level. You're telling me to be concerned and I have them winning zero games. Okay, well, the team is not going to be very good, right? Negative wins. Okay, so the arguably two best players on both sides of the ball are banged up and not really doing anything through three days at camp. It's okay to be a little concerned. Barmore, this is a pattern, right? I mean, the guy seems to have an issue staying healthy. Douglas is really small. Seems like that's going to be an issue. Move it up. What point do we start to make me feel better? Continue the answer and make me feel better. I just, look, it's hard to look at the roster and the situation right now and feel super duper positive about the New England Patriots. We look for bright spots, at least I do as a lifelong Patriots fan, but I'm just trying to be realistic. I'm good at realistic. It's the bright spots I struggle with at times. Okay, so those are my concerns. Let's get into God Chaw for a little bit because I was up here doing radio. He had, I guess, impromptu press conference. He was scheduled actually yesterday, but because he wasn't really taking part in practice, didn't speak. I read some of the tweets that came out of the press conference. Give me your takeaways from Devon God Chaw's meeting with the media. Was he as cheery and upbeat as Matthew Judon? No, I'd say he was pretty subdued. I think God Chaw has a bit of a, oh man, what's the right way to put this? He feels inflated. View of himself. Sorry, go ahead. That's the right way to do it. He thinks he's one of the best defensive tackles in football. I haven't seen that since he's been in New England. And we were talking off air about how his position in particular has been devalued over the last few years. So it's already a devalued position. Now you want to be paid as a top three guy at that position. And he was throwing out some names. Like this guy gets paid this, this guy gets paid this. I'm letting Drew Rosenhouse handle everything. I don't know, man. He also talked about saying it's sort of it is what it is with a business side of things. If God Chaw gets moved, I don't think that this team totally suffers this year. I really don't. Yeah, I don't need to pile on him. I was a little overly harsh. I felt like in one of my Gresham 4A hits this week when I said they can win three to five games with or without you. So pound sand and get the hell out of town. I don't need to do that again. And there's a lot of just balls in the air. And I kind of joked with Gres on the show. You look at San Francisco and you'd expect a team like that with so many star players competing for titles. That's where you expect multiple holdouts and guys unhappy and I want mine. It's a little different when you're coming off a four win season projected to win again three to five games and dealing with multiple holdouts, hold ins. And I just think to compare the two, Judon's doing a much better job. A of managing the PR angle to it. But I also think it's easier for him because he's the better player at the value position. Where I think most fans would like to see the red sleeves stay. And most fans really don't give a rat's ass about Devan Gajajajaj. I don't know if the team does. I'm not speaking for the team. I do think the team liked him and cared about him more when Bill Belichick was the head coach than they do now. So it'll be interesting to see where that goes. In terms of the offensive execution. Are you because yesterday there were some multiple rehuddle attempts and at least once where AVP had to run out and kind of do. And one of those was with a third string I think group. So I don't want to pretend it's like always Jacobi Brissette and they're struggling. But are you seeing desired evolution here early in camp to a new system, a new phase, a new coaching, just sort of on a superficial general level? I think it's a little too early to be super critical as they're putting in that new offense. So I don't want to kind of jump on them for that. We can jump on them for all sorts of other things at the moment, particularly just roster building in general. So I think that you're seeing decent enough flashes at the moment where you can say, okay, it's moving in the right direction. It might not be as fast as we'd like it to be, but it's a brand new offense, brand new quarterbacks. Let's give it some time. Okay, so I know a lot of places like Phil Perry on NBC Sports Boss. It's like a stock watch daily and I used to do that at Patriots.com. So I feel like we have a natural break here. They're off on Saturday, so we're three practices in. We can kind of assess three days worth of work. If I were at to ask you, name me a couple guys whose stock is up, or guys that you think have consistently flashed, because I feel like we've had days, individual days. Like I was a Jalen Rager guy for the first day. I thought he really flashed and continued a strong summer. Jayvon Baker has made some plays. We've talked about Drake Mays, ups and downs. Just guys that if I said, who's had a good start to camp? What are names that would pop to your head? I would actually try and buy a group of the receivers. You know, give me a little bit of each of the young guys. Give me some Rager stock. I think you've seen flashes from all those guys that you can feel really positive about. Baker, as you mentioned. Polk had the great play today. It seems like even outside of that big catch, he had a few really nice balls to the sideline with Drake. So those would be the three guys from the first three days that I'm looking at and saying, "Okay, I like where we're at." Because as we all know, the receiver room has not been something that's desirable as Patriot fans for us over the last few years here. So I'm going with the receivers and then Judon. I think Judon is saying all the right things. Like you talked about, he's a better media savvy guy than Godshow. And really, you know, a lot of players around the league who are doing sort of like, not holdouts, but you know, talking about wanting a new deal. I think he's handling it really well. He's still out here. He's performing at a really high level. So those would be my four. I don't know if I'd get a great price on Judon. That stock's probably already pretty high. But I think I could buy low on Rager Baker. And Polk, Polk probably, the market's probably already pretty bullish on Polk. Yeah, so I agree with you. If I were a Patriots fan, I would probably fixate on the Drake made, a Jalen Polk connection that we saw even end minicamp. You remember there was that final play of minicamp where it was a questionable call with the referees in the corner and they ended with a touchdown. I thought that was a good symbolic kind of play for those two guys. And they do seem like they're building a little bit of a trust, rapport, whatever you want to talk about. So I think that's a good sign. I do think for a guy who we're not really sure where he stands, contractually, Judon has been, you'll hear this phrase from me a lot. "Energy, effort, and attitude." It was my youth coaching principles throughout my career. His energy, his effort, and his attitude have seemed pretty good. Especially, I mean, they've been good for any player, but for a player in a contract dispute of some sort or negotiation. I think that's been really good. I haven't seen necessarily a ton of plays from Christian Gonzalez, but he just looks good running around. He's like, "First, I was a good looking dude." I said that yet. This is a big guy. Like, when I saw him in person coming up the hill, wearing the new number, which I must have missed that news that he changed numbers, I was like, "Oh, Gonzalez, all right, zero." I still don't really love that whole number thing. We can talk about that a different thought. Be old, dude. It's cool. It's awesome. I don't know. I don't know. But yeah, big dude, big dude. So, you know, you see him moving around. It looks like he's, like you said, there hasn't been any flashy plays so far. So, he's someone that, when the joint practices start, I'm going to be really interested to see how he looks against the Eagles. But I'll buy some stock on Gonzales, dude. Can I keep buying stock? I'm going to buy some stock. Absolutely, because I am as well. Even though I'm also as part of the crew that's like, we can't just anoint him in all-pro corner. He needs to, you know, AJ Brown may bitch slap him around the field, or Davante Smith, or one of those guys. Like, that I'm really looking forward to. Pads on, competition, other team, ego. Like, I think he has an ego. I think he wants to be a stud corner, wants to be, not necessarily sauce gardener, but wants to be in that world of great players. I think he's looked good running around for the first couple days. And I'm staying optimistic despite spending a lot of time this week with Andy Gresch, who's been sort of critical of the Gerard Mayo era and the new culture and all that. World man, it really is. So, I understand why Gresch is sort of anti because we had one way for 20 plus years here in Foxborough. I mean, you got multiple cortical impromptu press conferences happening from guys that are disgruntled about deals when they have a year left on their deal. You worked for the Patriots website. Tell me, did that ever happen under Belichick? No. And you have Gerard Mayo before practice encouraging it almost. But it's a different world. Different world, different totally different world. So, I can understand why Gresch is going to be critical because it's different. And, you know, we push back on things that are different sometimes, Andy. My point would be, I think they won four games last year, because they weren't very talented and their quarterback play sucked. This year, if they don't win games, I don't, I think it'll be because they're probably not getting great quarterback play, maybe the offensive line stinks, the offensive line stinks. They don't have many playmakers. I just don't know that they're going to lose games this year because Gerard Mayo is too youthful a coach or is too that I'd also throw in there. If I'm going to worry about coaching, I'm going to worry about Alex Van Pelt and the scheme and the play calls more than the overall leadership of Gerard Mayo. I agree with you. I think it's just something to watch for later in the year because if it gets ugly and guys feel like they have the freedom to say anything at any time to anyone, that's when it can really start to hurt the development of what they're trying to build here. You know, Mayo keeps talking about building this foundation. So look, I understand player empowerment, let guys say how they feel. We're moving around some mics here. So I get it, but later on in the season when they've got one or two wins, legitimately late in the year, because that schedule is tough. It's going to be an interesting different vibe, media-wise, and we'll see if it has an impact on how everything develops here. I agree. I coined the phrase over the last year plus that losing is undefeated. It beats everyone. It beats you down. It beat down Matt Patricia in Detroit. I thought it beat Bill Belichick down last year in New England. He hadn't had to deal with it much. And you're right, it could beat down Gerard Mayo and his team. It'll be a difficult struggle. But that's a long ways off on the horizon for the here and the now three days of training camp. In the books, Drake May is hitting Jalen Polk. It looks good. He's up and down progression for Drake May. Jacobi Brissette is a strong mentor and energy for Drake May. The offensive line is a work in progress where I'd like to see more progress, because I see the work, but it's not leading to a lot of progress. There's a lot happening at Patriots Training Camp. They get Saturday off. They'll be back on Sunday. The pads are coming on early next week. Then we can start to really assess passrushers and pass protectors. And the run game probably starts to talk a lot about Ramondre Stevenson in the core of the offense that they want to build. For Tom Carroll, don't call him Thomas because he doesn't really like it. I'm Andy Jumbohart. This has been another six rings in football things live training camp practice recap from Gillette Stadium, where we will give you the information. All the news, notes, quotes and anecdotes from every single Patriots Training Camp practice this summer. As I like to say, peace out.
