Training camp day two of the post-Bella Check era has come to a close. Your pals Fitzy and Hart talking to you, the good people of Patriots Nation and the Fox Pro Faithful on this, our second edition of the six rings in football things post practice recap. It is July 25th, 2024. You can hear some of the fans left in the stands over to our far right now. The throngs of fans who made it today under unusual, tempered conditions again, Andy going wild for Drake May. Good to see Jude on out with the crowd once again. Drake may sign an autograph. Gonzo and the million dollar smile just wrapped a media avail in an autograph session. Those are most of your positive today on what was otherwise. I think I feel pretty comfortable saying kind of a clunky day in the process. I was going to ask you, are we hype men or are we just reporting what we see? No, I did my hype man job earlier with the fans. Okay, so now it's reality? We're actually with over the next 15 minutes, we are going to traffic in reality and the funny thing is there's a lot of stop signs, a lot of sewer caps, a lot of pot holes. Today was less was more underwhelming than the underwhelming first day is how I would describe it. There was it was underwhelminger. Yeah, underwhelminger, which somebody else made up a word, one of the players, but I enjoy when players make up words. Yeah, there's just you know that the famous quote about Oakland, there's no there there. The hell here here right now. No, Drake may has been up and down, you know, Jalen Rager pops yesterday, disappears today. I didn't really think any receivers pop today. You know, there was a couple past breakups. Rick was getting some run, which was nice to see. He's fine. I mean, they're all out here. There's 90 guys out here. I'm not saying there's nobody out here doing this. No, he's not doing it. No, no, no, we don't talk about him. We know. Nope. I thought we don't talk about Bruno. Who's Bruno? That's from the Disney look. I keep forgetting that all the proper reference lost on you. So we're going to talk about Bruno. Okay, so type on Norton caught a couple passes today. That's great. Javon Baker caught a couple passes today. That's great. You know what I'm right about that. Oh, by the way, I love seeing this right now. As we discuss today's practice and break it down for you right here. We're watching Marcus Jones, who again continues to look very fluid, comfortable. Looks like he's healthy. It's a good thing for the return game. You got all excited about his past defense. That was also. It was a PD and a PI. You and Mike, you're already both called it a double DPI. That's fine. He's actually talking right now to Danny and Dola. Great to see Dola. The blue steel is back in the house. Dola, Dola, bill y'all. I like seeing the family coming back together because we're going to need all the emotional support we can this season. I just, it's unfortunate. Some of the better players aren't ones that are in uniform. All right, let's get down to brass tacks and task breaks. Exactly what I know you want to talk about. We have been ringing this bell and this alarm for damn near close to two years. And it looks like no one has come even though we have been heralding potential oncoming distress. There's no pads and it's seven on sevens and 11 on 11s early on in the back to school process. Offensive line is going to need some W-O-R-K in Cincinnati. So the most alarming part for me isn't necessarily that they're struggling in past protection and they're blocking. It's that there are runaway rushes. There are guys that don't seem to be accounted for. It's not that no one blocked them. It's no one thought they had to block them. Like and that's a schematic issue. We had a couple of people on it. Yeah, we had on a hat. Yeah, like there were guys who were unaccounted for. So that's initially look like he's now he's he's smart. He's a veteran player, but he looked like he read. Eight was unblocked nine was unblocked the various times. You're having to chuck the ball throw it away. You're having to tuck it and run. You're going to pull the Tim Tebow. Did I see Bailey Zappi in a seven on seven? Just throw it on to the ground. Yeah. Oh, which was actually the smart play on that play. It was because he's a smart quarterback. He doesn't have a lot of physical tools, but he can do what he's supposed to sometimes. So he's now been demoted to QB4. Yeah, so they've solved our what if Bailey Zappi is the best quarterback situation. You know how they've solved it? We're not going to give him reps to prove that he might be the best guy on the field. He'll just stand back there and watch and get like one or two every once in a while. We refuse to acknowledge that there is a very slight chance that Bailey Zappi could be the most productive of these four quarterbacks. And that would be from an optics and PR standpoint. Night is zest. Absolutely. So we're going to demote him to four. Joe Milton running with the threes today. Drake made two. And of course, Jacobi Bursett. You're starting quarterback still to date, as Gerard Mayo said. I will say the ugliest pass play I saw on the day. And there were some there were some fugly ones for sure. There was a there was an 11 on 11 over here to the right on the offensive side of the field where we sit on media hill, special teams and defense work. And I saw I saw Jacobi Bursett take one from under center. Play action. He looked to his right. He threw the ball. Maybe a receiver was 10 yards away. Like it was like someone read in. He threw out or out. It wasn't the only one though. There was a Drake May Taekwon Thornton version of that where it looked like Thornton kind of ran out and May thought he was going to keep going. The ball kept going and Thornton didn't and it hit the ground. Yeah, no, it's a it's a work in progress. I'm not going to belabor it belittle it. I'm actually going to find the positive in today's work out. If you want to speculate, we'll call this. Yeah, it was good for my perspective to see. Late in practice, Robert Kraft came on the field. The first person he spoke with was Matthew Judon. They had a nice chat for a while. Like five minutes and I think there was even a hug or a high five. There was and then he left Matthew Judon and went immediately to talk to Elliot Wolf who handed him a phone and he talked on the phone for a little bit. If you want to speculate, you might speculate. The phone could be the agent. I have no idea. But I don't think it's a bad thing for Robert to be involved with. Elliot and Matthew Judon and contracts and all of that. As we speculated yesterday, after practice, Matthew Judon would not make himself available to the media and speak at length unless we felt like something was in the works. And we'll see because he was weird early in practice. He was doing drills where everybody else had helmets on. He didn't. He was kind of going last in the drills. I don't know if that's his way of saying like even while I'm out here, I can kind of half acid or I can make things issues. Devon Godshaw did not practice today. Maybe under the weather. Maybe under the contract weather. I have no idea. Barmore didn't practice. So there's guys not taking part. Guard reported yesterday that he may have tweaked his knee. That is going to be. Oh, excuse me. And of course, Mike Giardi from Boston Sports Journal. Of course, who is now standing next to the fabulous Chris Mason from the last live. We've got so many of your favorite followers. Star-studded crowd here. It really is. There goes Mark Daniels. Very important. Dan Roach is down the hill. Roach is. It's quite a crew. I think Roach is not down the hill yet. He's still good reporter. He's down the hill. He's his best ace are behind him. He's laboring to get back up the hill. But no, yeah, you're going to have that early in camp. You know, Bill used to say guys are in various degrees of participation. Was this phrase he liked to use? You're going to have tweekings and things on first days. But no, if people aren't back in football shoot-ons out. They're getting in shape before our eyes. That's their job is to get in shape before our eyes. And next week, we may be talking about actual blocking and hitting and tackling and some of those things. One thing I do want to. So we we had Christian Gonzales post practice. Yeah, guy has a not just million dollars. That's the inflation. Ten million dollar smile. He hasn't. He has the dimples in the teeth and the arm. He has a whole he has an arm. You know, they talk about I really do too. And there's a lot of high fawn right now. Oh, yeah, we got to stop that for a minute. You were talking about aggregators and A-holes. No, no, no. People were talking about Jonathan Jones brought up Stefan Gilmore in the same sentence with Christian Gonzales. He was talking about his personality. He was not comparing the players on the field. He was talking about his personality. So don't pull like three little words and pretend that he said something that he didn't. He did start knowing that don't do that. Now, he did say there are some on field similarities in terms of length and physicality. But he wasn't making a comparison between the guy who's played three and a half games and the cornerback who won defensive player of the year for the first time in a quarter of a century. We're not doing that hype train. We have enough hype and fun with him. We want to trade up. They traded down. They still got him. He had a good rookie September. And now we'll find out. Right. Just let him be who he is, which is a good young prospect. On the subject of being who he is, we welcome into the program right now. Who are you? Digital Assistant at WEEI.com. He's been putting together what we're going to call the notes and quotes daily blogical. That WEEI.com of Patriots Training Camp and helping us out. Tom Carroll joins the program. Let's welcome him in. Tom, great to have you here. First thoughts on your first two days of Pats Camp with the crew. You know, it's not too hot, which is great. Came in expecting to be covered in sun lotion and wearing a bucket hat. Haven't had to do that yet. But no, Drake may look like he was doing everything underneath the defense today really close. He was the mayor of Checkdown City today, which is OK because he's going to have to work that side of the street. Probably a lot. Remember when Matt Jones said, you can never go broke if you always take a profit. Good point. Matt Jones stunk. Maybe we shouldn't be reminding people of Matt Jones. No, it was really good to see him making the smart decisions here. And hey, you know, it's not like they were running plays during the seven on sevens and the 11 on 11s. That were deep balls like we saw yesterday, but it's good to see a guy that's mobile, make the right move in the pocket, hit the guy underneath the defense because turnovers is how you lose football games. So let's avoid those as last year, evidence sincerely. And by the way, talking on the notion, Andy, of someone just being who they may be and not creating expectations, it's difficult not to create expectations. When number 99 Kian White comes out for his first media of L at Pats Camp, shirtless. Yeah, looking like he's fresh off the set of like a Ninja Warrior show or maybe a sequel to 300. I also might change nothing about my expectations of him kicking ass and taking names this year. He's talking about his comfort last year. You had to think about what's my job, do my job. Now he's worried about just beating the man in front of him and he had the quote of the day, which was, I know you like to do t-shirts, t-shirts, posters, mugs, everything. And you can hype it up for the fans. If we're all winning, we're all winning. That is the new mantra of the season. If we're all winning, we're all winning. You can't dispute that. You can't. Them's the facts. I don't want to try to sound like one of the Utes, but no lies detected. No. No cap. No cuts to facts. Wow. Thank God we have Tom here. Thank goodness we have Tom. No offense. I wish you were saying that and it was Tom Brady, but whatever. I know, sorry. Wrong Tom on the program, but hey. Pete Carroll. Great Tom, lost son. Did you get a chance to also hear, we heard from Calvin Anderson. Good to see him back there. Said he's, for the first time since signing with the Patriots, healthy and the strongest he's been in his career. Do we think that maybe he's competing honestly for a starting job on this line in play? I would say hard scoffed. No, no, no, no, no. Wrong scoffed. I think if you have a jersey number that makes you a lineman, you're competing for a starting job. Okay, unless you're. Verdarian Lowe, I almost said it. I'm not saying it. But Darien Lowe was out there today. They, I mean, Okora Four has been the mainstay at left tackle, but no pads. We'll see what happens there. That right tackle spot, I swear. If you've ever played line before, step up, give it a try. If you played line in high school, step up, give it a try, wide open competition. I think it's really hard to figure out who the starting five on the offensive line are going to be until they actually put the pads on. That's the top number seven. Yeah, so. They don't have a starting five. I guarantee you they will start somewhere in the range of. A lot of them. What's the over under? We've done big overunters on when we finally see Drake May. Let's do a new over under here on Six Race. How many starters on the line? How many different offensive line starters. I'm going to go, you ready? I'm going to set the number 10 and a half. That's a lot. That's two full starting lines. I'm going to go under, but it's going to be close. Yeah. It'd be like nine. Yeah, eight, nine. If it's that bad, then oh, and 17's in play. I don't want to get you going on that again, but you know, I keep feeding the fire. I know it says, clearly do not feed the animals outside inside the zoo. We've got any mock drafts going. Do we know who's going to be the number one pick yet? Whoever the. By the way, looks. No, call them in the making is Patriots fans need to root like hell for Shadur Sanders because that number one pick you're going to have is more valuable with a star like Deon Sanders promoting his son for the number one pick. And you getting three first round. Okay, I was waiting to see where you were going with that. For Shadur, that is the court. You should root for Shadur more than you're rooting for Drake May this year. What's it going to say? We haven't even seen Drake May throw a pass in a pre. I want no part of Shadur. I think I'm sure I root for Shadur. That was strong. That was that was a little. I don't think he's going to be a franchise quarterback. And we'll see. And I've heard bad things about the way he handles himself off the field that I want no part of. Rod comes from the top down, so. Tom, also we heard the tail in from Jalen Polk. He's two practices into his pro career. He looks the part of the game. We'll talk later, buddy. And he's going to go run and do a hit with Greshing for you, right guys. Tom's going to wrap up the pot with me. Jalen Polk, who is a favorite of ESPN's Meena Kimes. As we see ESPN's Mike Reese just standing to our side right there. I did a clear association game right there. She said when he was drafting. The Patriots may have stolen one of the best receivers in the draft that he's sure handed that he's confident quicker than anticipated. I'll tell you so far, one of the brighter spots that I've seen. I mentioned Marcus Jones, the pop Jalen Rager, the arm strength of Drake May, you know, making number 10 look like a strong arm quarterback again. Jalen Polk looks very comfortable on the, does not look out of place, doesn't look like he's going through rookie struggles yet. You know, the only throw today that I thought was like notable worth talking about. Yeah. Was during seven on sevens and Jalen Polk did a little slant underneath the defense. Up the middle, Drake May stepped up in the pocket, hit him, beautiful little throw. Yeah. That's going to be first downs for the next five, six years. That's what you want to see without Kendrick born out here is KJ Osborne acclimates to the offense. No pop Douglas today. We know that he's going to be their new slot machine that he's going to be the third and seven guy because he can, you know, get open in a broken phone booth. Just seeing Jalen Polk and Drake may establish a connection. I want, obviously, I'm looking forward to maybe seeing Joe Milton uncork a bomb in the preseason to save on Baker just to make everyone in their wheelchair stand up with their popcorn, but you want to see the connection between May and Polk develop. Like that's if there's going to be a his guy that he's going to develop with that's going to help him build his confidence. It's going to be Polk. Absolutely. And, you know, second round pick, right? There was a lot of guys around that spot that people were clamoring for. Oh, why did we end up with Polk? He's the guy now. So let's see what he's got. And during the post practice press conferences, you know, media was asking Polk about his connection with Drake May and he's being really smart about it. He's saying, I like all the quarterbacks. They're all really smart. We got a great quarterback. Now is the time for diplomacy, for sure. Right. But in reality, the play during seven on sevens where we saw Drake hit him right in the middle of the field on that slant, that's the type of stuff we want to see during camp. And hopefully we get to see one of those big plays like we saw from Rager yesterday with Polk over the next few days here. Right. These are when you're starting to just like we're still like we've just surveyed the land. And now we went to the store and we bought what we need. Now we're starting to dig the foundation. We haven't even gotten into like pouring the concrete and laying stones and leveling things off yet. We are just starting to dig and build the foundation. And those are the blocks upon which a good foundation on offense, which needs a lot of work can be built. All right. Any final thoughts before we wrap it up, big guy? No, let's let's keep the temperature here in the high 70s for tomorrow. And maybe the stance will be a little bit more full. Yeah, another another decent turnout from the fans. But of course, it is the middle of the week. It is early in the late July training camp process as well. We'll see what it looks like this weekend. Of course, they slap on the pads next week. That's when we really find out who the grinders and the great guys are. 11 more practices open and available to you, the Foxboro faithful. So come on down, say hi to us anytime. We would love to see you. Welcome to the party, Tom. Great to have you here as well. For Andy, for Terp, for Tom, and everyone involved in this nonsense and madness.
