From world famous media hill just outside the dual practice fields behind Gillette Stadium, home of your six time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, your old pals Fitzy and Harder coming at you with a brand new six rings in football things, post-pats camp practice react podcast. It is day one back to school Andy. Good to see the fans back here. Great to see all the friendly faces from the Callahan's to the Gaspers, the Socies to the graphs, and of course Mike Reese, who always has to get his obligatory mention out here doing their job. The players are about to speak to the media. Fans are clamoring for autographs, and while it's a little overcast today, it doesn't feel like a summery day. It feels a little early to be back in what I would say was a bit of a mandatory, if not a perfunctory day of football practice. Yeah, this was, I would say, nothing overly thrilling. More than a couple nice catches by Jalen Rager, one of which was one-hander from Drake May, that ignited the crowd, so that's, if you, if you were the fan looking for that Drake May moment from today, I think that was probably at a deep ball down the right sideline. But no, these first few days in shorts and helmets, it's like, ah, the players got to work up to speed, and NASA's fans kind of get up to speed like, hey, who's that 83 running around out there that looks like our best receiver and, wait, who's number three? You didn't have a three, and so you're getting up to speed with who's where, doing what, I wouldn't say overly exciting in terms of 90 minutes of practice, but I think you said like a necessary first step, you know, crawl before you run kind of thing. You know, some interesting notes, I would say. We're going to fixate on the quarterbacks, obviously. We're going to fixate on the offensive line, obviously the receiver position, obviously. So you start to, oh, pencil that in the back of your head and like, oh, is Rager going to be like a top rotational receiver? Are you not? Yeah, let's go right there. So I would say the star of the day, if such an award can be given away for day one of this perfunctory mandatory back to school, Pat's camp, would be Jalen Rager. Yeah. Number 83 in your program, number one, your kick return hard after his performance against Buffalo at the end of last year's very show is a forgettable season, forgettable, forgettable. Yeah. I'd like to forget it. Bill Bellichord. Oh, he's he'd done he'd done forgot it now, but we've we've off discussed, you know, on the podcast, breaking down the wide receiver room, a wide receiver room that Warren Sharp from Sharp football analytics recently declared the 32nd best in the NFL. Really? Of no, she didn't know that because I was scrolling down and I got tired and I left the tweet before I got to the wait. So it's like when you're in like a chatters like Andy Hart has left the group like you left the tweet. Before I got to the patience. Oh, it took a while. Yeah. It was. Yeah. Luckily, I packed some gore. You know, there were that many teams and those. Yeah. Good Lord. So according to Warren Sharp and many others, the Patriots have the 30 second ranked wide receiving core heading into 2024. Now with newcomers like KJ Osborne from Minnesota, as well as rookie draft picks Jalen Polk and my guy, Jvonne Baker, maybe they'll start inching their way up from the depths and the basement to, well, maybe the 20s would be a nice place to land. Absolutely. And I will say it's a double edged sword, in my opinion, that we leave the first day of camp saying Jalen Rager looked really good because he did. He did. Yeah. But it's also like, do I want Jalen Rager to be the talking point when I have, first of all, DiMario Douglas wasn't really out there. He was doing conditioning on the far end of the field and didn't really take part in a lot of the. I actually didn't see him drew almost anything. He did sneak through as we talk to you right now, there's a group of young fans clamoring to get autographs from, let's see, we've got number 15, Marte Mapu, who by the way, Pop made a really nice play on this field over here. It's because he's an athlete. This is his world. Shorts and helmets is his world. He might be. What about when they play real football? And Drogneo kind of said that prepract is like, they're not really sure what he is. He's slimed back to safety. Can you find a job for him? They got a month and a half to try to figure out where they want to deploy him first because September 8th and Cincinnati is going to sneak up real quick. Joe Milton's over there, got a million dollar smile. I tweeted out earlier, I, I am amazed at watching the ball leave his hands. It just jumps off the man and sometimes it hits the hands of the target, not always, not always guaranteed. The ball just jumps out of the man. So he's so hyper athletic, but it was Drake May connecting with Jalen Rager, 50 yard bomb down the sideline that was the play of the day drew the loudest ooze and oz from the crowd. I would call it a modern catch because I always am skeptical of those damn gloves. It just sticks. Right. It just stops. You just watch everybody. How many people do we watch on hard knocks or in off-season social media working with like flight God, route King? All your favorite IG follows. What was the new one that was, there was a new one this week that I hadn't heard of? Runa. Yeah. I think there was like, there was something like that. And I was like, is that, is that a wrap handle or a trainer? It's like route, president, flight skills, flight skill, oh yeah, route president versus I might open one of those. Just give myself a cool name and people will think you know what you're talking about. So Rager, look, Rager, look good now. We had sort of like written him up in our sort of pre camp analysis on six rings here that if he was going to make the team, he would have to make it on special teams and maybe is the kickoff return. Well, both. Yeah. I think he can be and we all know that that's a talking point, a focal point is the kickoff return and how that's going to evolve change this year with the new rules. And then if he can double up and also be their fourth receiver or whatever he might fall in on the depth chart, but I would tell you, based on the spring and then today, he might be the most consistent receiver they've had in the totality of the OTAs, the mini camp and the first day of training camp. Long way to go. I don't, I don't want to. From spring to date, even though we're one out of 13 practices open to the public. Yep. So he's been out there and active throughout the process. And that can't be like Baker miss time. Yeah. Flashed. Jalen Polk has flashed and then it kind of disappears at times. Keshan Boute. Keshan Boute. Flashed. He's, I don't know whether you want to bet on him making the roster or not. Oh, cheap shot again. He's plus a 50 to make the roster. It's fine. KJ Osborne, by the way, he was out there kind of doing KJ Osborne things. And what is that? Exactly. I wasn't sure. I can't remember once thinking like, Oh, look what KJ Osborne did and I'm going to add him. He's a waiver wire guy in your fantasy league. That's who he's been. He a waiver wire guy in the NFL league. And that was my. You can hear the background by the way right now. If there's anyone talking, Hunter Henry, who looks, should we say, was he on your awake in 180? He looks schvelte. He looks schvelte. But I don't know if that's a good thing. I mean, he still is an NFL player. Don't slam down. Austin Hooper, by the way, side note on the tight ends, Austin Hooper with an excellent catch in traffic from Jacobi Versed on field number one. He's a solid veteran tight end. Like it's just sneaky, good veteran pickup. Yeah. I mean, sometimes sneaky, good veteran pickups get lost on teams that start the season like going eight. But when we last saw him, he was on the sidelines in episode three or four, I believe, a receiver consoling a petulant Devontae Adams, who was not too happy with the way Jimmy Garoppolo was delivering the ball, mostly to the other team. Yeah, that happens at times with Jimmy. It's part of his story. And Devontae Adams, total aside here. Very interesting to see the inner workings of Devontae Adams over the last year and take that for what you may. You assume all receivers are a little crazy, and that just comes with the position. We kind of need him to be. I don't know that I knew he was what he is painted as in the receiver documentary and kind of had portrayed himself. But getting back to here, we're also looking down a mic on Wenu right now, talking to the big mic. And a big mic seems to be settling in a right guard, which is a surprise. I don't know if it's a surprise because most of the league believes he's a guard. But the line is so much better last year when he kicked out to tackle. Well, we did have Calvin Anderson playing some right tackle today, which he hasn't really been an option due to health and issues for a while. Maybe that's a core for us still. Is it vertigo? Is it vertigo? Because he wasn't really right when he tripped the field. No, no, no. He wasn't right all year. He's never right all year. He dealt with that health issue. I forgot exactly what it was. He may be getting his second chance this season and getting a little run over there. But that, you know, he is a he's a tackle, Calvin Anderson, like that is what he is. And most people believe on when it was a guard. So I know Mayo has talked about putting the best five out there. He reiterated that in his pre draft press conference. For sure. If they're all out of position, that was more of a Bella chicken thing like, yeah, they might both be good. But if they're playing out of position and everybody's a little uncomfortable sometimes, even though they're the best players, it doesn't lead to the best talent, you know, cohesive performance on the field. So that's something to keep an eye on. But we should probably go back to the quarterback position. That's what everybody's watching, looking for. Yeah, guys. Fun first 10 minutes. How does Drake may look like I thought may had a man day. He loves that boot. Have you noticed that he loves the boot to the right and then jump through? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Well, that a signature may think I think he loves the stuff like that and what he doesn't love and it leads to poor performance is the easy stuff, the checkdowns and and being under center. I was just I was just talking about this with my friend Tom Giles from NBC Sports Boston TV guy. There's a do so from patriots.com will handle the way there is that's the deuce horn. He's got to record upstairs and talk to Fred Kersh the deuce horn. I thought that was something else. But he has a certain Drake may a nonchalance to the easy throws that I think is typical of modern quarterbacks. It's anti. You'll know this every time Tom Brady threw the ball, he was focused on his mechanics, whether it was on a mountaintop in Montana, whether it was on a beach rock with Alex Garret. Yeah. These guys get off on this off platform. You got to be able to throw from every angle, every footwork. So don't worry about your form. And then when I see a bad simple throw, that's where the old school, hard O Andy goes, well, maybe if you're worried about your form, you would have completed that past kind of thing. So in the evolution of how we get used to watching Drake May and the way he plays, because we'll forget about this in a year, if he is some combination of, you know, Mahomes and Allen and like McKerney, Van Peltz have gotten to him and they've harnessed his athletic ability, but gotten him to focus on the proper mechanics they need in the NFL. But if he's not completing passes and not making plays and not winning games, we'll focus on this stuff and say, maybe focus on some of the little things and it'll lead to the performance that we want. So we're in a, you know, feeling out honeymoon period for Drake May, but I think it's quite clear what Gerard Mayo said pre-camp is still very much true. Jacoby percent is the starter. Oh, yeah. The Kobe percent is the pro-ready veteran. He should be. He's been in the NFL for a decade. He said as much yesterday before camp kicked off that in the quarterback hierarchy right now, it is Jacoby percent's job. And Drake may just simply isn't consistent enough. And this comes from, you know, I'm a maniac. I'm a Drake May guy. I want to see him play sooner rather than later. He's not consistent enough right now. And right now, I say that just like Gerard Mayo did, Gerard Mayo said today coming off the spring at this point, he had a lot of qualifiers that leave him the out to play Drake May. I think somebody has gotten him and said like, maybe we want to speak in fewer absolutes and have some more disclaimers, caveats and qualifiers going forward. And if I were that person, I'd also say, say a little less, talk a little less. Yeah. When you feel like you're done, like the say less train feels like it's pulling into the preseason depot for Mayo. Correct. And I like it. And he's learning on the fly, but I feel like he fills dead air at times and sometimes with too much talking and too much information and too much. Maybe he feels badly that his mentor and the previous coach is here for quarter century trafficked and dead air. Correct. So, you know, the pendulum over swings the other way and then it comes back to the middle. It's course correction. But yeah, the quarterback position, I think it's quite clear, Jacobi Bursett is the starter until proven otherwise. And Drake May is not consistent enough right now to really make an argument in that in that way. So Mike Catholic also watches. Hey, Mike Catholic, there's our guy. There's our guy. Hey, Mike Catholic, let's say hello. Did you miss me? How are we doing? Six ranks something way six rank you are the you are you are the straw that stirred the drink. And here he is back here on the health had to come say hi to the friend. Everyone Mike looks great. He's doing great. He's happy. He's healthy. He'd be grudges us nothing. Maybe other people other people, but I think he still likes us. Yeah, although we still owe him pizza and beer, so we'll get on six rings. Well, he owes me pizza. I still haven't been invited to a frickin pickle pizza party. We'll make it happen. Yeah, we'll make that happen. You keep saying that, but I haven't got an invitation. You're going to make it happen. I don't know if the people were expected of this. Joe Milton just did a back flip. Hi, Catholic, everybody. Oh, look at Gonzo hate to steal Cad licks glory, but Joe Milton just did a back flip behind it. Hey, can we talk about Gonzo's little video that went viral over the weekend where he bought his parents a house? Sure. That wasn't like a MERS, that wasn't even like a side bag. What's a MERS? Man purse. Oh, okay. He had like a legitimate like purse on his side. It's a brave new world. You personally believe if you look the way he does and you're a number one quarterback in your second season. I'm not jambing him for him. I'm just saying. You can do whatever you want. And that becomes cool. You'll be wearing a MERS in trying to be like him. Oh, no. Yes. And you can't pull it off. I still have to get the... I told you, I still have to get my Frank Edelman fanny packs that have like a little cigarette all around. I think those have jumped the shot like not get a MERS. Ah, you need no. Fanny packs a lot of these. The rock will be so cool. They're cool. Say, there you go. You're no rock. I'm no rock. Other aspects we need to get into speaking of 13 minutes in the most important story. Both Matthew Judon and Devan Gajra are on the field today. But are they holding? No, they're taking part when they went for whatever that is over here for like 11 on 11 defense. They were in the huddle. They were taking reps. They are out here. They participated as much as that more than some players like and as much as any regular defensive players. Judon took the field early signature red hooded sweatshirt. Yep. Goes over to the fans. We'll follow them for 10 minutes. Even though we had heard, I think it was Josie and Anderson who came out earlier today and tweeted. She had heard that Matthew Judon would not be a hold in or hold out that he would actually be here and plans to participate fully in camp, which is a good sign. That leads me to think that if he's going to, now he's going to, maybe he's a man of his word and wants to honor his contract, even though he obviously would like a little gussy up in her first deal. But when you do things like that, and that would be the crowd going absolutely wild for Drake. Make coming over to autograph a couple of balls. Drake. Drake. Drake. Oh, that's see. That's how you endure yourself quickly to the people. Drake. Good job, buddy. I love that. A little more consistency on the easy throws would be nice. Not right. Andy Hart. Imagine if you heard me and was like, what'd you say? Yeah, he looks up. He's like, did you say? Hey, baseball is important. Why don't you come down here and say that to my face. Oh, huge. A strong fan. Big fans over there would drag me. That's great to see. But if you'll look, Andy, there's got to be at least four or five Mac 10 jerseys with duct tape over the back. I've seen so many of those today. I feel like that's how they should sell them at the pro shop. One kid got his North Carolina number 10 blue Drake major. He signed. That's a good get. That's an elite jersey. And that also now you can't wear it anymore. Yeah. Now you got to take it home. You got to frame it. That costs like 300 bucks. Now you got to buy another jersey. That's 150. You just cost yourself 450 bucks without it. $150 mistake. Unbelievable. Okay. No, but other than Judon and Gautre being out there, I didn't think anything really stood out. I would say Rager. Jonathan Jones made some plays in coverage. You know, it was interesting to me and alarming to me. Hopefully is just one of those like it's practice. It's day one. A lot of the plays that were being made offensively Brendan Schuler was at safety. He should not be a safety. Yeah. I saw him. I saw him in formation way more than I was expecting. So we saw this for years. And there was a field like that with 11 on 11. Yep. Matthew Slater would be on this field doing like weird special teams drills running. That's what Brendan Schuler should be doing. He should not be over there playing safety pretending he's a safety. No disrespect to him. Is that a feeling out? Not a safety. Not a safety. Even though Mayo was on the team last year of the year before and has seen what he's capable of, maybe they just want to try it out early just to see what if you have to get some emergency reps at some point? I mean, Matthew Slater did have to play safety alongside Julian Ellman and Super Bowl 46. This were Belichick we'd be saying. He's always prepping for the worst case scenario. Chess. Overcheck his guy. OK. I think he's putting a bad safety on the field. I don't want to see that as well. Also nice to see. I may mention to you earlier when first arriving Marcus Jones was out here fielding puns. Don't forget everybody. Marcus Jones could be a factor and a difference maker on this team. He did not play a single snap last year had a torn labrum way before it was cool to have one like Gonzo. Just fielding puns the word that the word that came to mind the first descriptive effortless. He just makes he's just a such a good athlete so natural at fielding the ball. I think it's going to be a massive plus to have him back there return a ball this year. Agreed. I think they have some really intriguing options in the return game both on puns and kickoffs as that evolves. As I snarkily said to you earlier, I wish he looked as natural at cornerback as he does return a puns. Yeah. And that may come. I'm not saying he can't play cornerback. He's not a bad corner. Not bad. I wish he was better. But maybe in time. Maybe he spent the entire last year listening to you on six rings saying that he isn't as good a corner as he should be. If so, appreciate you. Thanks very much. Then we're doing our job. That's right. Before we wrap up this first Pat's camp 2024 post practice six rings react pod. Any other news notes nuggets observations or peccadillos? The Antonio Gibson thing to me, he was on NFI to start camp. I'm assuming maybe failed his conditioning run or something in that nature. I don't want to say alarming, but you have no depth at running back. Although, Jim Michael Hasty looked quicker than advertised and had a good spring. So we may not want to totally just look. I think there's a lot of guys that are just maybe going to make the team because the team's not that deep and talented. I smell a column. So there's some of that which I also would flip side that I'm going to throw it to you late in this and we don't have to answer it if you don't have an answer. I'm ready. I'm always ready. Everybody likes to know the surprise cut. I want to do surprise cut on day one of camp. Who's your surprise cut? We did it the other day and the name brought up in our chat is the name Mike Giardi brought up. Dietrich Wise. Oh no. To open up space for Keon White, worded kind of the same way as the comment in our chat, which makes me think that guy was actually Mike Giardi. But whatever. Is he like a team captain? He was like, I don't think you can cut a Brady knife. If you could trade him and you wanted to create room for a younger guy in Keon White, I'd be open to it. If you cut him, I think that's bad business. I don't have a lot of candidates for a surprise cut because like... Tycho on Thornton's not going to be a surprise. Right. He is never going to. He's not a surprise. No. Like those guys are fighting for their roster lives. And I said this the other day you... I would have cut him already. You've never been on board. I don't think he's that good and you want a significant race. Pound sand. You're not that good. You should be happy to be making... Know your role, shut your whole. Yeah. You're making eight digits in the NFL. Unless you're listening, then you're a nice large man. Nice. And we'd love to have you on the pot. What about a guy like Daniel Aquale comes back and is healthy. He's graded out pretty nice along the defensive line and is a better pass rusher. I am A. Joe. So he's still on the roster? I believe so. Okay. I don't know the whole roster. I'm being honest with you. They caught somebody yesterday I'd never heard of. Oh, and there's Deetris Wise, the nicest man in New England. Hey, this guy says you're going to be caught. This guy right here. Yeah, Andy Hart said you're going to cut. All right. All right. So there's your first practice report everybody. Day wanted Pats Camp overcast. Never got above the 70s. Now we got a little drizzle going on out here in the field. Should warm up as the week progresses. Don't forget this is the first of 13 practices open to the public. We'll be back here tomorrow with our social media observations, blogicals, and so much more. I'm on the radio tonight and he's got you tomorrow night on The Rich Keep Show. And of course, we'll have a post practice reaction podcast six ring style tomorrow for Turpin. Everyone else that helps us put this nonsense together and our new guy Tom Carroll who you'll be hearing from on the six rings pod and on the socials with WEI soon as well. That's Jumbo. This is Fitzy. Thanks for listening to six rings. We will talk to you tomorrow. Have a great day and as always, go Pats. [BLANK_AUDIO]
