I know we talked about this earlier. A bunch of rookies reporting to camp. We also have the Fox Sports has come out with their projected records for all the teams in the NFL. I'll just go through the AFC East because that's what we're going to be talking about. The Fox Sports has the Dolphins finishing 12 and 5. That's a little aggressive. Why? I just feel like it's a little aggressive. Remember last year when everybody thought they were the best team in football, they scored 70 in Denver? No, yeah, no. Offensively, they're still going to have some punch to them. Okay. And then they have the Jets finishing 10 and 7. We'll get more to that later. There could be a change in New York that could bump that up. Yeah. Buffalo 10 and 7. And then the Patriots finishing 3 and 14. Ouch, babe. I know it's worse than last year, is it not? It's worse than last year. It is worse. After I believe Gerard Mayo went on the Greg Hill show on a Mayo Monday and guaranteed that they would be better. Did he? Guaranteed more wins. Well, let me ask you a question. Well, if he guaranteed more wins, they need to guarantee they would be better. I believe he guaranteed both. I'm sure producer Nickly find it, but I believe he guaranteed more wins. Because I think a sneaky way to get out of that without like guaranteeing it is, you know, hey, hey, we're technically a better team than we were last year. A record doesn't show up. Oh, I love that. But we are technically better. You can see we never got blue. We never, nobody ever blew us out, landed it. You know, we were in, you know, it'll be some weird stat about, hey, we were one possession away, you know, oh, yeah. All those phrases that they use, right, to kind of show that they don't suck. Right. No, I, um, this is a legit three wins. And if you notice, if you look in the graphic, yeah, that's two wins worse than anybody else in football. The next one is five wins for Carolina. I just say that, yeah, you know what I mean? Washington's got five wins. So they, they think the same teams are going to stink. Carolina, Washington and the Patriots have been near the top of the draft last year and are going to be near the top of the draft again. But three wins is a step backwards from last year. Okay. So with that being said, because this is basically a doomsday scenario. I guess no, a doomsday scenario. No, it's zero wins, which I have said is on the day. Yeah, you actually, you actually think it's possible. All right. So, um, let's just be optimistic. Yeah, that's what I'm good at. Okay. Let's be optimistic about this and I spread up. Um, what has to have for the Patriots not to finish in last place of the A.C. So I feel like it's very simple. It revolves around one man. He has a group of followers called maniacs of which I am one. I think Drake may has to come in and do his best C.J. Stroud impression or whatever you want to call it. He has to overachieve. He has to be the opposite of what Danor Lobsky said. And this is a real answer, by the way. Because the snarky answer is like, uh, Aaron Rogers, Josh Allen, and Toa all need to get hurt. That's my snarky answer. Wait, wait, hold on. Why do you consider that snarky? Because it's like, A, it's not going to happen. They're not all going to get hurt. B, it's kind of, you know, like you don't want to say the reason you're good is because you wish for injuries for someone on another team. So I'm, that's snarky. All right. Just a realistic, what can they do? They can say, wow, Drake May has come so far in such a quick period of time. He's starting in week one. This is his team. The players know it. The coaches know it. Jacobi Brissette knows it. And he goes out there and he changes everything. Because C.J. Stroud did that, correct? Yes. Changed everything in Houston. Was there help? New coach. Was there a left tackle? Everything. But he is at the center. We all know it. The quarterback is the guy at all levels of football now. If you have a quarterback that is good and people believe in, your team is infinitely better immediately. And I think that's what it would take for them. Because there's other questions. Oh, wide receiver. Oh, line this that those are all going to stay questions on some level. And some are not going to work out for the positive. Some are actually going to be bad. But if Drake May is the next big thing, if he is the lifesaver, if he is the ultimate patriot, if he is Captain America and just puts the team on his back, they will overachieve and it won't be this crap. So the question is, how do they finish last in the AFC East? Yep. So to do that, you're obviously going to have to win more than three games, right? So you would say, I mean, what does that even mean? Six or seven you probably need to get to to not finish last, depending on how the division plays out. And you still, by the way, even in my scenario, might still need an injury from one of the other top three quarterbacks in the division to get there. Something, you know, those are three pretty good football teams. They have franchise quarterbacks to a debate we can have a different day, but they have franchise slash Hall of Fame quarterbacks, MVP type quarterbacks. And they're expect that all those teams are expected to win double digits, right? All the all the three teams. Yes. Okay. Absolutely. So you're going to need Drake May to be better than expected to be CJ Stroud. And you're also probably still going to need to combine that with something goes wrong and either New York, Buffalo or Miami. No, I would think that you would, you can't have just one of the scenarios. Like I think you would need both because I, because I will take the snarky route. And I think it is realistic, you know, as much as the jets have added, they're often so line on their defense, there still is an aspect of, I don't know, just reminds me of like, you know, when James Harden and, you know, Kevin Durant and, and Kyrie Irving all joined the Brooklyn Nets. And it was just, and then, and then, uh, you just kind of felt like there's just wasn't going to work. I just feel like it wasn't going to work. Something was going to go wrong. They weren't going to get along. Someone's going to get a hurt. It's like that jets, because I see Patriots fans like jets are still going to jets. Well, I mean, think about this idea that they're this, this, this snake, bitten franchise that it will always fall apart. It'll always go. Well, you know what it was with the jets with me and I asked this question, last year, and you were probably put one of the people that I asked it, is it safe to still mock the jets? Is it safe? Last year, the question was, do you still feel comfortable and safe mocking the jets, even though they signed Aaron Rodgers? No, I do not feel safe mocking the jets. And I do believe Aaron Rodgers has kept that door open because the mocking door, the mocking door, because of him, you know, going off and not doing OTAs, and then Robert Salah having to say like, he's doing something that's important to him. And there's just still this, they say they're not unified. No, they're not on the same page. There's going to be like, you know, Aaron Rodgers interest in what's important to him and the speed he wants to happen. I just don't think they're aligned. There's, there's obvious issues with Nathaniel Hackett as their offensive coordinator. There's obviously leadership issues with Robert Salah. I just, I don't know if I'm buying their ability to not be mockable. I mean, I still think in a way they still will be mockable. But they still finished ahead of you last year without Aaron Rodgers. They did, but did they obviously, they didn't make the playoffs, did they? No, no, no, they underachieved what was the Patriots. They had no quarterback. They had to go Zach Wilson, like the whole thing fell apart, but they still were better than you. Even Aaron Rodgers was gone on what play for and he still were better than you. I know that's just, it's amazing. It just shows like if you were just a little bit competent, if you had a little bit of just, you know, camaraderie and just influence. So talent. I find it interesting that I didn't bring this up, even though I brought it up in the written piece I did on WEI.com and go check that out if you want. And it's five reasons the 24, 2024 Patriots could be better than expected. I chose my Jake, Jake Drake may, which I actually put number two on the list in my written argument where I said change, like it works, basically. Mayo works, Mayo's culture, Mayo's way of doing business. Alex van Pelt, Demarcus Covington, the change, the culture, that just snowballs, right? Like it's just, it's this weird unforeseen immeasurable, but it just takes hold in Foxborough. Do you believe Mayo is as or more important or the culture is as or more important than what I brought up? Drake may just play in good football in the field. Um, it is, but you won't see it right away. You just won't see it right away. Look at the Red Sox. Don't we believe part of their success story is they're just a cohesive unit unified message, everybody, the young guy and I hate like, you know, people bring up there's an identity, but that is a thing like having an identity as a team and then having a, you know, agreed upon role and accepted role inside that identity of that team validated by your coaches and which also validates your worth, which makes you play hard and try and make things important is all part of the picture. So let me ask you the question then, May and Mayo, the two new guys that are running the show, Eminem, Mayo Mondays, May Mondays, the whole thing. And we'll see who we get. Who, who, a good point. You might, 100 Matthew Judon is a good one. You've had him in the past. Oh, he's been good. Yeah. We'll see if you get him. Yeah. If he shows up here, yeah, yeah, traded the Houston Texans. Are they Demico Ryan's new look Texans or they CJ Stroud's new look Texans? Their identity. Well, um, when I think Houston Texas, I think CJ Stroud. Okay. Yeah. So if they, if the 2024 Patriots are Gerard Mayo's Patriots, is that good enough or do they have to be to, to overachieve? Do they have to be Drake May's Patriots? I would argue Drake May. Okay. I liked the way you phrased that. Thank you. I'm a professional. I say bombs. It is a, it's gotta be. I think there's always a, there's always trouble ahead. You know, Bill is the exception to the rule. Okay. I don't think he is. I think he is. Bill Belichick's Patriots. Not so good. Tom Brady's Patriots. I don't want to get into it. Really good. You ever hear it's a Brady Belichick argument? I don't want to get into that. The idea. But most of the time, I would say 90% of the time, if you tell me that the head coach is the focal point of the team, I said, that's a problem. I don't, I don't believe in that aspect where the head coach is your identity. He shouldn't be the identity. If he is, then you have no stars. You have no playmakers. You have no personality. Oh, Mike Holmgren. Wasn't he your head coach? He wasn't, he, he literally tried. That's a good example because he tried, he tried to shoehorn his way in. We called him the big show. He, he had this big banner. It was like a, it's crazy. It's just, it was Holmgren everywhere. There was an issue internally with him getting all this attention as a head coach when he's not playing. Like that's, and I remember and it didn't work. Like, so the first year we make the playoffs, we literally backdoored away in. And then after that, there was Mr. playoff. And then he finally, the team and the personality became the story. Sean Alexander became the story. Matt Hasselbeck became the story. The defense became a story. Like he was second. He was still important as like a leader, but he should not be the focal point. I just, I personally don't believe in it. Like, so Drake May is the answer. I was right where I started. It, Drake May needs to be the story of the 2024 Patriots for the 2024 Patriots to achieve and succeed and overachieve. Yeah, and I think that's a long shot. Why? Because he will tell me, no, why do you have to be a hater? I don't, doesn't mean I don't believe him. I'm just, I just don't think he was going to do it right away. I don't think he's going to like just understand everything right away and be polished right away. That does, it just doesn't happen. It's hard. And this is the other thing. Well, it's so hard to play that position. Yes. And it's hard to get it quick, especially when things, when you have less practice time, you have less opportunity, less reps, just all of it is force fed. It's like drinking out of a fire hose. And people will look to that clip from the hard knocks with the giant's rod and look how quickly he diagnosed everything. I just, it doesn't mean anything to me. He's out working. There was videos lately. Who was he with lately? He was out and extra reps. Yeah, but they're not all talented as him. He's a diamond. You can't break a diamond and that diamond is ready to shine. I know you want to for you want to fast track it right away. I want to know that really. Okay. Well, and I think he's the guy. Does he have to be a playoff quarterback his first year for you to know he's the guy? No, Josh Allen did make playoffs. He was, but you said not last place. So he could finish third place and not not win a wild card, right? He could win six or seven games. The Jets, Rogers gets hurt. They only win four or five. You're in second place in the east. The dolphins and the bills make the playoffs, but you're like, we're looking pretty good, but more likely not to happen though. Yeah, probably. Yeah. I mean, I have said zero wins. Yeah, I know. I know. I feel like we're like this literally play make believe right now. We're in imagination land because I can, I could see a version of it. But man, like everything would have to go right. Like literally everything. All your young wide receivers would have to just be dialed in like right from day one, your offensive line that is a massive issue, which is probably one of the worst in the AFC is going to have to suddenly gel and your, your offensive line coaches, you're all going to be in locks. All the new coaches, 30 new coaches, 30. Do you believe it's more likely the Patriots win six games or zero? Zero. Thank you. So you're with me. Zero is in play. Yeah. If you say pick a side, yeah, you're saying more likely six or zero. I'm not going to Glen Ordway and play the middle. I thought the question three or four is probably the life. They dropped. I saw something, you know, they've been four. They actually opened apparently at five and a half win total and they're down to four and a half. And so that tells you what people are sort of reassessing. Now that they have now that they see them, I wonder, will they do it again? Like do they keep moving the line like before the first game of the season? I feel like it'll price stay around four and a half right now. But that you go under? I would take the under. Yes. And so would Fox Sports at three wins. Hmm. Wow. Feel like I learned something just now. Well, you're a lifesaver. I am in more ways than one of the teacher as well. Yeah. I'm a leader of men like Mayo, Mayo and I are similar. Yeah. We're culture setters. There's no silos around you. No silos.
What has to happen for the Patriots not to finish last in the AFC East? and they win more than 4.5 games? Christian Fauria and Andy Hart discuss. Plus, the guys give 5 reasons the 2024 New England Patriots could be better than expected.
