We look forward to getting him back in the old podcast saddle to talk about all things, Patriots, NFL, and more. Because as I sit here and record this on Sunday, July 7th, 2024, at the tail end of what I hope has been a happy, healthy, productive, and enjoyable Fourth of July, extended weekend. Got to love when you get a holiday on a Thursday, because then you can just take work off Friday, then you get the weekend. It's a four day reason to celebrate America. And I'll tell you what else. There's nothing more American than getting fired up for training camp. Pro segue right there. They don't pay me the big bucks for nothing, folks. Because as I record this, we are but just over two weeks away from the start of one of the most intriguing Patriots training camps that I can remember. That's right. Pats Camp 2024 begins for public consumption, July 24th, just a little more than two weeks away. And as we get ready for it, I wanted to give you guys a couple of tips, some heads up, as to some of the things that are going on right now, because you may be thinking, hey, you know what? I could use a little break. Wouldn't mind just, you know, powering down a little bit before I amp things up, ramp things up, get fired up for Pats Camp. And then next thing you know, you're in camp and it feels like summer is almost over. Better go back to school shopping. Oh my God, there's already Halloween candy on the shelves. And it's kickoff. It's September 8th. We're already in Cincinnati. Holy smokes. Who's my starting quarterback? What's going on? Well, I'm here to sort of give you a couple of the things you need to know. Just want to steer you towards wei.com. Wait a second. Who does a podcast and says, hey, listen to me as I tell you to go read something. Well, I filled in for Andy Hart, who does an excellent job each and every week with the Sunday seven. That would be the news note and nugget apalooza. Sort of like a, a, a print, if you will, a digital version of the six rings podcast every week. Just sort of rallying up the news notes, nuggets and whatnot. That we usually do here in the Pats Perrie portion of the podcast. Just in a nice takeaway, legible form. You know, no one sits down to read the newspaper the way we used to anymore. But I'd like to encourage everyone to check out the latest Sunday seven that I put together for Andy at wei.com. A couple of things that you may want to know about or just get a little a little heads up on, a little, you know, a little tidbit that consider this like a little note to Benet, if you will, a little NB for Pats fans out there. My pal, Chris Shime, Shime Time, who did an excellent job this week with me, filling in on the Greg Hill show on wei.com. Especially when my home studio literally fizzled fried and powered down and Shime had to take the helm and be Captain Kirk for a couple hours. Great job, Shime. Appreciate you, buddy. He hit me to the fact that the, all the passing props are out for your quarterbacks this year. And this leads off the Sunday seven this week. The Drake May props are out most notably his passing yard totals for the 20, 24 season, his rookie season. When we have no idea when he's actually going to get under center. When is he going to take over for Jacobi Brissette here on six rings? We've talked about six and a half being the number. Are you going to take the over? Are you going to take the under on the number of games played by the Pats with Brissette under center until Drake May inevitably ultimately and permanently takes over the quarterback job for the Patriots. So draft Kings and FanDuel both have their passing total numbers out for Drake May this season. Draft Kings has 2,400.5 yards whereas FanDuel has Drake May at 2350 and a half. So there you go. There's your totals right now in advance of the season. Obviously, you know, leading quarterbacks like your Josh Allen's, your Patrick Mahomes. They're well into the 4,000. Curious to know also that draft Kings and FanDuel both have Caleb Williams, the first overall draft pick from 2024. Obviously, Jaden Daniels goes second to Washington. Drake May 3rd to the Patriots. They both have Caleb Williams as the odds on leader at only plus 100 to be the rookie quarterback that leads all rookie quarterbacks in passing yards this season. So Drake May, 2,400 yards, 2,350 yards. To me, this is interesting because you know they're going to handle him conservatively whenever he gets in there. They've told you time and again from Mayo to AVP to Elliot Wolf and everyone else that works with the Wolf of Ball Street and the new silo-free collaborative effort there with the New England Patriots and their coordinator and coaching structure that they're going to be cautious with him. They're going to be a run first team and Drake May, he'll get in when he's ready. And he's doing the work. He's putting in his film work. He's going to have a great camp. I know he's probably going to cause the most furor or the most energy. It'll be the most exciting camp in a while. At least since 2021 when fans could come back to a degree. That's mostly back to the stadium and you know camp wasn't quite the same because we were working our way through the COVID protocols and restrictions at the time. It won't be like camp back in the heyday of Brady Gronk and Edelman and oh my god, I got to see Tommy. We're going to go back to the Supa Bowl. But people are going to want it. The fans are going to want their first chance to see him run out, to cheer for him, see his new receivers, Jalen Polk, who we think is going to be great. Talked about that this week with my pal Andrew Callahan from the Boston Herald on his Pat's interference podcast, my guy, Jay Von Baker and many of the other rookies and new players that they've brought in as well as all these guys they've signed to the core, which we'll get to in a minute. Anyway, I think this prop is fascinating because this is Vegas and Vegas always has an idea. Somehow they know something over there. How they get that information, I don't know, but usually when they get it, they're pretty right about it. So whatever little, you know, what bots, what algorithms, what geniuses have put this together, 2,400 yards. If you believe Drake May is going to get in sooner than later than 2,400 yards should be a pretty appealing number because even if he, let's say he plays 10 games, he'd have to throw for 240 yards a game. Maybe that's a lot. Maybe that's a lot. If he gets in and plays 12 games, he only has to throw for 200 yards. That would mean the Jacobi Percet basically starts the gauntlet. And then somewhere around that point, the, you know, game five, game six, the reins are passed to Drake May and it's forever his team, win or lose. I mean, I could, could you see a reality where Drake May is throwing for 3, 350 yards a game? Are they going to let him sling it like 93, 94 blood. So I mean, 94 blood. So second season was just a whole entire thing, you know, thrown for making 70 pass attempts in a Bill Parcels led team against Minnesota and that infamous, that famous rather overtime game. I don't know, I'm, I'm going to say my vote goes to the under. We'll bring this up again later in the week with heart as well and get his feelings. But I'm going to say under, but the idea, like last year, Mac Jones's was only 3,200 yards. He and Bailey Zappi in one of the worst quarterback rooms in recent NFL history combined to throw for just less than 3,400 yards. And I'm actually kind of surprised that combined the two of them through for that many yards on what was just an anemic grotesque underperforming offense. Can't wait to shake free of all that. See the new guys out there. See Drake May in there. I, I just tend to think that it's going to go under that he'll probably take over. I don't, I don't think he takes over week two. I don't think he starts week one, like Chad Graf from the athletic talked about that Drake May would have to have a spectacular camp to find a way to push past Jacobi Brissette and take the reins week one. He can impress people. He can turn some heads. We can all be excited for when May Day finally arrives. But I think Brissette's going to hold, hold down the fort and hold the job on a run first team that's going to lean heavily on their defense for a long time to come. So I'm going to take the under on that one. But that kind of gives you this feeling that there's a, a general sense out there that he's going to take over somewhere between like weeks five and week nine. And if we take a quick look at the Patriots schedule, 2024, thank you very much. Google machine and supercomputer. So week one, obviously bangles week, that's on the road in Cincinnati. You got the Hawks at home for the Patriots and the opener. Then they're on the road Thursday night against the Jets week four, tough one Sunday game at San Francisco. Maybe Tom Brady will be on the call on that one. So week five, if he takes over home game against the dolphins, that's a tough one. Week six, Texans at home against CJ Stroud and a possible AFC championship bound Houston Texans team with big dreams. Obviously CJ Stroud is now the example of the point. That's what you want. Drake made a turn into this year, but he took over and was pro ready week one last year, coming off a spectacular college football, semi final championship performance against the ultimate champion, George Bulldog, CJ Stroud, hell of a season. Big things ahead for him this year. Could it be, would you start him week seven in London? I mean, that just seems your first NFL game is on the road against the Jags in London. No, maybe see week eight or week nine at home against the Jets, tough defense to throw them to. I'm going to say, see, I'm calling for either week nine on the road against the Titans or week 10 on the road against the Bears. Drake may, Kayla, everybody would much prefer to see Drake make Kayla Williams as opposed to Percette versus Williams, unless of course the Patriots are turning heads and winning at which case, in which point, and however you'd like to phrase it. Fine, keep him in there. I hope Drake may sit longer if Jacobi Percette is winning games with precision passing a power running game and a potential top five defense, but I'm going to take the under. We'll revisit it later in the week with Hart. I still say he starts week nine or week 10, maybe even week 11 at home against the Rams, if you want to showcase him to the home audience first and foremost. But anyway, that's kind of gives you an idea where people out there think Drake may will be coming in this season. Some other things from the Sunday seven as well, Gellani to Vy's extension. Thought that was very interesting. Another core player for the Patriots being extended, being given a nice deal, a three year, 15 million dollar deal that could have a max value of 21 million for Gellani to Vy. Gellani to Vy, one of those guys that people kept on. What the hell is he doing in there? Why is Gellani to Vy still on this team? What does this guy do? Tell you what, does the dirty work? He gets in there. He works hard. He's a grinder. He's rarely out of position. He has a nose for the ball. He's one of those. Yes, sir. I'll get it done, whatever you need. He's a perfect Patriots player. Ultimately, Bella Chickian that's going to transition nicely to Mayo and Demarcus Covington's defense. Second leading tackler last year with a hundred and seven tackles tied for second with Kyle Duggar. 114, the leading tackler was, of course, Juwan Bentley last year. Nice to see him get that. But also, what does that mean for Matt Judon who cryptically tweeted the other day? All right, I'm going to head out the SpongeBob meme right after like the day after Tivai's extension. Now, does that mean he tweets this out? A lot of gifts and a lot of memes being tweeted and shared these days by Matt Judon. We know he wants his deal because he tweeted previously a few days prior. I believe that particular, his particular tweet from late June, 2024 was this actually came on June 3rd. Lord, I've, Lord, I've seen what you have done for others. I know mines on the way maybe praise him anyhow with the Edelman yelling at Brady. You're too old. Gift. Okay. So obviously he wants his. He wants a contract extension last year. He did the hold in this year. He said no way he's going to hold out. But you have to imagine that he was thrilled for his teammate. But yet at the same time, none too happy. So that cryptic tweet is sitting out there lingering like something stinky will say. So that's going to have to be dissected. And we'll have to overanalyze that for the next couple of weeks until we find out. If Elliott Wolf wants to add him to this core of players like Duggar, like Anwenu, like Christian Barmore, so many guys that have been extended and given these caught David Andrews, some veteran leaders, some ascending talents. They're establishing their, their defensive core. Like you see who the Patriots are, the holdovers from the Belichick era that they want to hold on to to be the leaders now for Gerard Mayo. Is Matt Judon going to be one of those? I'm sure he, it seems he wants to stay. He also wants to get his in the market rate for a top flight pass, rusher, and edge rusher is a whole lot more expensive, probably much closer to Barmore than it is to Vi. The Patriots still have plenty of money under the salary cap, but do they want to use it now and lock up someone who's on the other side of 30 coming off of an injury last year where he tore his bicep week four, missed three quarters of the football season. Obviously high energy guy, assistant GM Judy, the dude with the red sleeves. He's a leader for this team, but same time, sometimes runs out energy late in the air, not saying, just saying for what it's worth, be that as it may. So that's another one to keep your eye on there as well for a team that's going to lean heavily on their defense. We'll get into what the expectations are for the Patriots defense this week as we once again make our way towards Pat's camp. Also fun to see as we noted in Sunday seven, all the former Patriots, especially Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Robert Kraft, and the absolute Met Gala multiplied by a film opening at the Cannes Film Festival, times the Oscars, times the Grammys of celebrities that were Michael Rubin's world famous white party on the 4th of July in our current political climate. I would just like to point out it's called the white party because he asks everybody to wear white. So take of that and make of that what you will. Some great picks of Brady out there. They had an impromptu game of beach football, not dogfight football for your Top Gun Maverick fans out there. Little beach football, Brady threw a pick six in the beach football game. Two of all people, Demar Hamlin. How about that, huh? There's your big win against Brady Buffalo. Congratulations. Also good to see Brady out there spending a lot of time with CJ Stroud. Once again, high expectations for him. Well done by CJ Stroud. Spend as much time around the goat whenever possible that you can. Because if there is anyone you would possibly ever want to pick the brain of or try to get a little scoop, some insight, some info from, and more, it's going to be the greatest of all time. So well played once again by CJ Stroud, who was with him at Michael Rubin from Fanatics, rookie symposium a while ago, or the QB symposium, whatever it was. Stroud has spent some time around Brady, and I think that's only going to rub off in a positive way. Also, Joe Burrow and Tom Brady taking a photo that was just much like Joe Burrow in the playoffs or whenever the moment is sometimes too big for others. Ice cold, very handsome together. All right, Kendrick Bourne back in the second annual youth football camp. Looking good out there as well. Happy to see that. Love seeing Mr. High Energy in the vibe out there. And lastly, also could have made note, but it didn't find its way. If it was a Sunday eight, we would have also made mention of the, that sort of like new hard knocks that's going on right now with the Giants. It's pretty compelling stuff. It's, so there's the training camp version that's going to be coming up in a little while with the Chicago Bears. But there's the off-season hard knocks now. There's also going to be an in-season hard knocks. So many knocks, all the knocks. You guys get all the knocks. There's also Dawson knocks, who plays for the Buffalo Bills. But the Giants off-season hard knocks has been fascinating. Really good stuff to watch as they, as you get to see the conversations, the debates and everything that go on behind closed doors, as to trying to hold on to your own players. What kind of draft strategy you're going to develop. You can see that they did not want to lose Saquon Barkley, but they gambled and ultimately lost. And losing him to a division rival like the Philadelphia Eagles, no less. Just brutal, so really good content there. But our last note from the Sunday seven, unfortunately, there was some tragic news in the NFL the other day. We don't need reminders to appreciate every day that life is a gift and that we should tell the ones that we love, the ones that matter to us, how much they matter to us, how much they mean to us, and that we should be so grateful for the opportunities that we are provided and the gifts we receive in this life. But there was a tragic circumstance that led to around approximately three in the morning on Saturday morning. There's a multi car accident in which Viking's fourth round rookie cornerback, Kyrie Jackson was involved. And unfortunately, he and two friends that he was in a car with passed away just over three a.m. Saturday morning. And it's awful, just awful, just so sad, so unnecessary. Who knows what the circumstances were involving the other cars that struck the car Jackson and his two friends were in. Why this ultimately happened? The why is not going to undo the tragedy and the circumstances. The why is not going to fix someone losing their life. It's not going to bring him back. It's just, it's awful. And I know there was that whole old adage that Herm Edwards used to say about nothing good ever happens at midnight and why the guys were out so late. Who knows? But that's not going to, figuring any of that out right now is not going to fix the tragic circumstances surrounding this just senseless and unnecessary accident, it seems. And this is someone that the Minnesota Vikings had high hopes for as well. Second year receiver Jordan Addison, he is stud in Bloom as well himself, said that he had said in camp that he was a player that they shouldn't sleep on. They thought he was going to be a really good player, probably a key initial contributor to the Vikings evolving defense as well under second year coach Kevin O'Connell. He was a former teammate of Christian Gonzalez at the University of Oregon. Gonzo shared his thoughts on social media Saturday. He was obviously very upset about this as was everyone else. So I just wanted to say from everyone at WEI, we joined in with the NFL football players and fans of sport around the world and sharing our condolences, our prayers and our sympathies to Jackson, to Jackson's family, his friends, his fans, everybody involved. It's very unfortunate and just once again, I have to always sort of say this. We always say good day, God bless and go paths at the end of every podcast here. But make the most of what you got when you can because you never know how long you're going to have it for. And I'm very sorry that that happened, but as many others are, but rest in peace. And hopefully one day some, it's hard to even think of what good can come from something like this. But yeah, all right. Well, anyway, there's your Sunday seven, just a quick recap of what we covered this week. Go ahead and read it for yourself in greater depth at WEI.com. As always, our friend Mike Reese over at ESPN.com does a great job with his Sunday news and notes. He also talks about Jalani Tavine, his contract extension. Also covers a little bit Marcellus Dial Jr. Mike caught up with him talking about the fact that he was the lone defensive player drafted in Elliott Wolf's weaponized offense, 2024 NFL draft. That's interesting catching up with him. What kind of role he's going to have this year? Will he play corner because he's bigger, longer on the outside? Will they maybe try and he's just about six foot tall, 190 pounds. But also could he be tried out at safety as well? Seems a smart guy with some good experience. Maybe they stole one in the later rounds there with Marcellus Dial. We'll see about that. Mike also discusses Kyle Dugger, gets a feel from Rob Ninkovich, our old pound Ninko on the Jalani Tavine deal. And also notes that Joshua J. has changed to agents. So while we're thrilled that he's here for one more year on approve it, one year, $3 million deal. I'm sure Josh Uche would like to get a little more money. Even though he told us he could have taken more money elsewhere. I don't know about that one. So yeah, anyway, so Mike Reese's notes are available over at ESPN.com as well. There you have it. All right, so that's what's going on. That's what we've taken note of. Once again, you can read all that at ESPN.com. But most importantly, check out the Sunday 7 at WEEI.com. All right, I'll be on the Rich Keef Show this week. I know Andy Hart will have a turn as well. So check us out there. Make sure you follow at Rich Keef Show as well as Six Rings Pod at Jumbo Heart at Fitzy GfY and at WEEI. For all the latest news, notes, nuggets, rumblings, bumblings, and stumblings from the wide world of the greatest place to live. Patriots Nation. Thanks for tuning in, everybody. Look forward to catching up with you later this week with Andy Hart. We'll get his thoughts on all the things that have transpired with the Patriots over the last two weeks after he enjoyed his early summer/4th of July vacation. We'll do another What If Wednesday this week. Had a great one last week talking with the guys from the Untold Patriots Stories podcast. What If Bill Parcells had never left or stayed longer with the Patriots? That was a fun chat. So much here on the feed of your favorite growing Foxboro fan base, the Six Rings and Football things pod. Thanks to our pal Terp for posting this up. You guys have a great next week. It's going to be a hot humid one out there. As Brady would say, stay lubed, be hydrated, be well, be light of heart, and be grateful for all the good things that we have in this life. All right. We'll talk to you soon. Nick Fitzy Stevens for Six Rings and Football Things. Brought to you by your friends at WEEI Odyssey and 2400 Sports. Like we say, good day, God bless, and as always, Go Pats.
