He's a rub maker extraordinaire and also a touchdown Preventer you love him from Super Bowl 38 You know the play the one the only match at him here Matt great to see you out here today as well as always I know you're busy you got too many things going on a lot of irons in the fire What was it like meeting some of the fans out here at the card Expo? We always have a blast at these kind of events because it's it's personal right you can sit and chat for a little while You of course you do the autograph stuff But just talking about family stuff and business with my rubs and what are you cooking this weekend kind of thing? It's a it's a cool moment just to connect and talk a little bit about the past talk a little about about the upcoming season That's my favorite thing about coming to one of these events is I love seeing like the father-son connection Families out completing packs buying memorabilia whatever and also you get to have a real personal engagement No one's clapping back at each other on social media. It's more like hey match at him family guy Hey match at him entrepreneur as well as Super Bowl champion, you know, what what are you like? It's there's a real personal connection at these events. Yeah, and it's amazing how often they'll come up Hey, we we play golf together in Weymouth in 2021 oh yeah, I remember you from one of our food demos and bridge water whatever it may be so of course I remember you from that time at the head of earth and I don't remember my wife's middle name But yes, I remember that no, I mean it's but it's fun right you in in candor You do get to know some people that we they pop at the same events or you see them in a lot of the other You see them down at training camp or you'll see them at some of the other events at the after of course the year So it's it's a good time training campus changed drastically And I want to ask you about the one that's coming up in about five weeks and get your thoughts on the 2020 14 But we just came through an incredible two-week stretch for Boston sports in general 13th duckboat parade you've got some experience with a couple of those What's it like catching up? I got to ride in the one in 2019 just for the people out there that don't realize exactly how Exhilarating it is what's it like seeing a million people out there cheering for you screaming your name? And what's it like catching a Bud Light on the fly or doing five McGillicuddy shots before 11 a.m? I'll always kind of hold a special place for the first one right because I'd never seen that before you know So the old one duckboat ride was was different just because you get you get kind of used to what? 70 and 80 thousand people look like minutes, you know I'm a small-school guy and in South Dakota So you know seeing 15 or 20 was a big deal to me and all said hey I'm in the NFL and there's all these people on Sundays, but that's not a million Million is different every little every little Covey every little alleyway every turnaround a corner and there's another 50,000 people There's another 12,000 people and it's just it keeps going and going and going and it's only Well-meaning and I think you kind of get sort of the the dimple of whatever you call them the the hair on the back You're next sort of I call them the grid iron goosebumps. Okay. There you go grid iron goosebumps It but they they've sustained throughout the entire parade. It's one of the coolest things ever I was lucky working at nessin for 12 years So I got the you know do the three as a player, but then riding a bunch of them cover it Kind of seen it from all angles It's just a unique thing that we've obviously seen so many of them in this market that most people never do And it's not just that we've seen a lot. I think there's a an intensity to ours. It's a little different than other places Million and a half people yesterday. I mean they they canceled school but cancel the last day of school in Boston I will say very well-behaved parade yesterday for the Celtics and a younger team I feel like the the youth movement has decided the Celtics are their team because it's been a couple years since the Patriots have been Back on track now back to when the Patriots were on track Brady night last week He had a chance to go and what was your takeaway from what I thought was a spectacular Very classy and emotional night for Pat's nature. I was very happy and I'm not speaking on behalf But I think I'm echoing a sentiment that a hundred guys I talked to you know over the course those couple days would say we were just really happy to get back together I mean it was so cool. We've done a couple reunions over the years There was a no-one reunion for the guys were involved in that one There's a three timers at least the first three timers that we did a few years ago Many clubs for so many championships. So spoiled like the fans Yeah, well and now there's a there's a second three-timers group that I don't know if they've done anything But the point is for you know 90% of the dudes I've played with I don't see them And they don't see us like none of us see each other We all live spread all over the country So as cool as it was to come back and celebrate Tommy and hang out and see his family a little bit and get a chat the night before It was really more about Catching us all back up to get and getting together and Tom Tom touched on that in his speech It's like this is all about team and that isn't sounds like kind of a corny line like that's something you'd say in a speech But I was like no, that's really what this was. This was a giant reunion. Yes for celebrating Tom But we're all seeing people that you know the wives and the kids that are now back that in a lot of situations You know go back 10 15 years they were babies or toddlers or young elementary school kids who are now grown and It was just kind of cool, you know all the kids getting back together the families getting back together and seeing old faces Yeah, the the my biggest takeaway was how incredible it was to see what a fraternity all of you guys are The deon branches and the james whites being friends rust hoax stein Matt light matt chadam everybody the connective tissue there is your championships And how much you love playing for tom and how much you hate slash love bill And how it all came together like it is a 20 year fraternity that you guys have this exclusive membership in And this undying bond and I think fans took heart in that as well really just made for an emotional experience And now we have the wax stamp on the double dynastic run and we've moved on to new titles Speaking of which for the patriots i'll get you out on this matt appreciate the time What's it gonna take you were part of a patriot scene that was in turn around You know 2000 was a tough year 2001 expectations were kind of low and then a mix of veterans rookies And a plucky youngster under center who came to be thanks to a man They probably should build a statue for Gillette mo Lewis. You were part of something special there What is it going to take for jarrod mayo rookie coach rookie cubie and all these new players mixed with the veterans To at least start turning the ship around and making their fans proud again in foxborough I'm of the mind that when the quarterbacks plays better It's you're gonna win games and if if they hadn't made the change to jarrod and bill had had the better quarterback they had one more games And we talk about turnarounds um I think either the previous regime or the current would have taken drake may and would be on a similar schedule to not feel urgency To put him on the field until he's ready. He's just that kind of prospect I mean, I know of the group of portobex you could have chosen from I think there's a different sense of how quick you'd need to see One of them and dray drake was definitely in that sort of vein of You know high ceiling guy maybe a little less refined so knowing that and knowing that they made the jacobie move I don't know. I'm not I clearly don't speak for all fans But it does look like there was an intention here to slow play it It's not that you don't want to see him at some point this year. I'm sure fans will get edgy Especially if it's not, you know, maybe playoffs are off the board or you're not a super wool contender Whatever people people focus on but so maybe you do get to see some drake But I don't think there's this sort of oh gosh, you know You need to see a six six seven eight when turn around from a year prior because you now have confident quarterback in jacobie and maybe the future and the other guy I think it's a slow play year And that's hard to say because you know, I know the way there's an apathy towards sock stuff right now And I you don't really want to do that year But I don't think giraffe's gonna you know make or break his careers a coach this year They just want to see that same dominant defense See improvement from the offensive side, which just comes naturally from having better quarterback play and having to help you align Those things will happen. I think it'll be an enjoyable year for me personally But what does that mean to the average fans? Some are going to be mad if they win eight games, some are going to be pissed if uh, you know If drake doesn't play 12 games or something So it depends on what you're looking to get out of the year to be honest You can get you can look at it a lot of different ways I think and I think I speak on behalf of a lot of fans as long as you Can show me by the end of the year the needle is pointed in the right direction We got something to be proud of it's going to be a good watch not a tough watch like last year And there's we've got weapons poke and baker are developing as well drake is in there and that's solid defense That's Patriots football. Yeah, I think I'm glad that you mentioned sort of the own receiver. So that I think also Lens screens to the notion of not a quick clock. Yeah, I mean there aren't a lot of you know Look at look at the grip of sound and Houston now Uh, those were several names of wide receiver that were not sort of barbers coming out of the draft Those are developmental guys that they feel really good about in year two three four So they kind of filled the cupboard with those guys paired with a rookie quarterback What do you expect out of that in year one? I mean and again, I know people want to see ones and be in enjoy the thing But I'm gonna have fun as a former defensive guy Going to watch in the dot defense be dominant. The offense just not turn it over and jacoby can be that guy Reinstitute that run game with a healthy offensive line again and finally see them move the ball that way and not put pressure on a quarterback That's fun football to me. I mean they might win a lot of games 17 13 and I'm not completely okay with that man Yeah, but it may not be the team that lights it up for your fantasy team And that's kind of part of what things and maybe they do two or three years from now Maybe several of those pieces are those kinds of player. I don't know if it happens in this first year For he's always a great follow at chatham 58 on twitter for some of the best local NFL breakdowns patriots talking more Make sure you go to your local supermarkets or what's the website where they can purchase uh gold bark and beefcake You get a rub smoke love dot com or you can find us on amazon as well And of course he shows up every now and again at the north e sports card expo a great place for the emotional connective tissue Father sons and families purchasing sports memorabilia and having a great time match at him as always Thanks. My man. Look forward to hearing from you again soon. My pleasure
