IB Nation Sports Talk: Pre Training Camp Notre Dame Football We In/We Out Part 1

The start of Notre Dame football fall training camp is just two days away and Irish Breakdown is answering subscriber questions on today's show. Some of today's topics include: * It seems like the media is getting less access each year to practice sessions. I realize that makes it difficult for you guys to assess the team but is it a positive indicator of Coach Freeman’s growth as the head coach? Is it a good sign that he may think he has a product that he doesn’t want to unveil yet? Or does having media at practices hinder the focus of the players? We in or we out? * Notre Dame will have to be undefeated to obtain the 5th seed in the CFP, because the loser of the SEC and B1G conference championship games will be given the 5th and 6th spots. In or out? * The SEC will get a 9-3 team in the playoff over a 10-2 Big-12 conference runner up team. I'm Sean Stiers, by the way. Flying solo for the first half of the show today. Vince is going to join me for some rapid fire. In a little bit, we of course were off for a few days. The wife and I made the road trip to Cincinnati last week. Took in the food finders. Great American, great American ballpark in Cincinnati. Dave Grohl and the Foos. I mean they pretty much always put on a great show. And you get your money's worth almost three hours worth. I think I'm still worn out and my ears are still ringing. Had a big undercard down there. They had Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's son and his band Mammoth. They played for about a half an hour or so. No surprise. Wolfgang can play. The pretenders were there as well. Chrissy Heinz. She's 72 years old and she can still belt it out man. That voice is still there. They were pretty good as well. A lot of Notre Dame talk of course today, but a great Olympic opening weekend. Last I saw the US still leads the medal count as of tonight. Who knew Snoop Dogg was pretty much the guy we all needed for Olympic coverage. Didn't see that one coming, but he's been a little bit of everywhere. I saw a picture of him today with the fencing team. I, you know, I saw him taking in swimming. I saw him taking in gymnastics the whole deal. I guess he's going to be on that. I don't watch the voice. I don't know if you watch the voice, but I guess he's going to be one of the new people on the voice, which of course is on NBC, which of course is why they've got him over at the Olympics. So a lot of Snoop Dogg in the Olympics coverage. I think that that's been again both unexpected and a little bit fun. So a couple of Notre Dame alums picked up gold medals this weekend. Swimmer, Chris Juliano in the men's four by 100 relay and swimmer Lee Kiefer won her second straight gold medal as well. And the women's foil and I saw there was another Notre Dame. I think she's a sophomore at Notre Dame. She's from Hungary. She won a medal for Hungary and a men's fencer. Also won a medal who is a is a Notre Dame alum. So it's been going pretty well, been going pretty well at the Olympics and some of the Notre Dame alums over there doing well. And with the women's basketball team that they beat Japan earlier today. I saw this from DK. Any mention of the other DK and they get zero tolerance. I mean, I don't know which is worse. The fact that there might be another DK out there or the, you know, the DK that we do know is handed out punishments. So I don't know. DKaf yes flying solo for the we in we out portion of the show. I'll be I'll be handling we in and we out. And then we've got Vince coming in for rapid fire later on. So scheduling conflicts, scheduling conflicts. But can you smell that in the air football is near? We're just two days away from the start of Notre Dame football training camp. And of course, we've got you covered here at Irish Breakdown between the podcast platforms, whether it's YouTube, Apple, Spotify, wherever you get your podcasts Irish Breakdown.com. You got the champions lounge Irish Breakdown. Scott, you covered covered camp starts Wednesday. We'll be there for the first full practice observation. And then we'll have a few more five period practices throughout camp as well. But if you haven't been to the champions lounge, if you're popping in here, maybe you haven't been to the champions lounge. Haven't subscribed yet. Got some great summer offensive intel that Brian put up the other day. I saw him put up some recruiting news today as well. But I'm sure it's going to shake things up. There's nothing more that I can offer that Brian didn't put up there. So you have to check it out, but subscribe to the champions lounge because that's where you find all that good juicy stuff. And that's where the we in, we out questions come from as well. Right from the champions lounge. Come on Salty doing just fine on Deodorant. Maybe, maybe Chase Vince out of here. Jesse's actually in Cincinnati today as well. He's with a friend down there. Cubs Reds today in Cincinnati. So he's doing that. Scott, thank you for the super sticker. Much appreciated. Let's get to some we in, we out questions. Let's just go ahead and fire it right up. But again, the place to post your we in, we out stuff is the champions lounge. That's where you do it. So let's get going. This one is from Elmer laden. He says seems like the media is getting less access each year to practice sessions. I realize that makes it difficult for you guys to assess the team. But is it a positive indicator of coach Freeman's growth as the head coach? Is it a good sign that he may think he has a product that he doesn't want to unveil yet? Or does having media at practices hinder the focus of the players? So three separate things there. Football season may be over, but the action on the floor is heating up. Whether it's tournament season or the fight for playoff home court, there's no shortage of high stakes basketball moments this time of year. Get in on the excitement with prize picks. America's number one fantasy sports app, where you can turn your hoops knowledge into some serious cash. Prize picks is the largest daily fantasy sports platform in North America. We are the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports. It's just you against the numbers. Instead of battling thousands of other players, including pros and sharks, you pick more than or less than on two to six player stat projections and watch the winnings roll in. You can now win up to a hundred times your money on prize picks with as little as four correct picks. You heard it four correct picks. All you have to do is download the app in the app store or Google Play store, sign up, add some funds and you're in. Then you just find your favorite player and decide more or less on the suggested stat. It really is that easy. The night I joined I picked Hannah Hidalgo to have more than 14 points, Maddie Westbell to have less than 10 rebounds and Marcus Burton to have more than 18 points. And guess what? I hit on all three. Bing, bang, boom, baby, money in my pocket. It was just that easy. Download the app today and use code IRISH for a first deposit match up to a hundred dollars. Again, download the app today and use code IRISH for a first deposit match up to a hundred dollars. Prize picks, pick more, pick less, it's that easy. I would say it's worthy of our receiver for the NFL. Speeding is a rush on the field, in the zone, where it matters. As an athlete, I push my limits to win. But when I get behind the wheel, I know the importance of slowing down for safety. Because speeding is illegal, it enaches you, your loved ones and everyone else on the road. Did you know speeding accounts for more than one quarter of all traffic-related fatalities nationwide? Just like we need to focus and score touchdowns and win games, we need to be in the zone to stay safe on the road. Speed limits are in place to protect everyone, no matter what speed limit is. Anything over is not only illegal but dangerous. Like athletes, drivers must stay alert and present because there is no reward for speeding. Nothing is safe about it. Driving over the speed limit might seem like the quicker option. The speeding catches up with you. Stay focused. In the split second, everything can change. Paid for by NHTSA. And I would say the one that I am the most in on of those three options is the part about the product that he doesn't want to unveil yet. Because I think, I think as you kind of sit back and look at this, one, this is a third, going into his third year as a head coach, Marcus Freeman. And while we've had access, it hasn't been what I would call abundant media access. And I'm not criticizing it or one way or the other, the amount of access that we have. I mean, obviously, the media were always going to take more. And as fans, you should obviously want the media to have as much as possible so you get as much information as possible. I think this is just kind of a case though with the one full practice that we're going to get, and then a handful of the five period partial practice availabilities. I think this is just a kind of a classic case of you've got a new offensive coordinator running the offense. You've got a new quarterback joining him to run the offense as well. And that quarterback, of course, Riley Leonard, we barely got to see anything from him during his spring with Mike Denbrock and this offense. So I think that when you combine that with the fact that the team that Notre Dame is playing in the season opener, Texas A&M is led by the guy, Mike Elko, who used to be Riley Leonard's head coach, of course, at Duke, and there is some familiarity there. So I think that with Leonard and Denbrock running this thing together and the new additions that they've got at wide receiver, like we didn't see Bo Collins doing anything in this offense because he wasn't allowed to practice with the offense during the spring. I think all of those factors together, there's no incentive for Marcus Freeman to let any more get out there than possible. And we're not going to get to see anything live in terms of that first day of practice because they're going to be in shells that'll be wearing helmets, jerseys, and shorts. So personally, I think it comes down to that. Between the new offensive coordinator, new quarterback who wasn't there to fully run things in the spring, he certainly wasn't there at the end of the spring for the closed-door scrimmage and for the blue gold game. So they had other quarterbacks running the offense relatively vanilla during those scrimmages. So why let more get out there than you need to when it comes to potential for the other team to see anything? That's what I think it comes down to, like why there is only the one full practice that we're going to get to see. And a little bit more than the other sessions will get stretching, of course. We'll get probably a handful of one-on-ones between the receivers and the DBs and stuff like that. But I think that he wants to keep things as covert as possible going into that season opener because he do have those new variables added to the team this year. That's what I think. Now, all that said, we did at one point last fall, we got to practice and we found out that we were going to get to see not just like the five period practice that was on the schedule, but we ended up getting to stick around for a full practice and we got to see a little bit of scrimmaging and stuff like that. So now, will that happen this fall? Don't know. But there's always a chance that we'll get something added that we weren't anticipating because he's done it before. So we'll just wait and see. But again, as to why the the full practice sessions is what it is this fall, I think that that's what it has to do with having a new offensive coordinator, new offensive system, new quarterback, working with new receivers and all that kind of stuff. Good question though. DJ, every outlet covering the first day of camp will mention Riley Leonard's health or ankle in the first minute of their report. We enter we out on that totally in. I couldn't be much more in because when you look at, like Brian put his, here are the offensive things to look for him. We've talked about it on our shows. Here are the offensive things to look for. What do we look all this different stuff? The health of Riley Leonard is right up there at the top of the list in terms of what everyone's going to be looking for on day one, especially since, you know, again, like the offensive lineman, the defensive lineman won't be going live and no one's going to be tackling out there anything. But what will be live are the pass routes run by the wide receivers and the throws by the quarterbacks to those receivers and potentially some one on ones with receivers and defensive backs and those kind of things. So how healthy Riley Leonard looks right up there at the top of the list. So I will not be shocked. I would put this at a minus 100. If I was giving odds, I think right now in terms of what's going to be mentioned pretty early on. Another one from DJ six different players will have a carry during the season from the running back position. We in or we out on that. I think that I'm going to be out on this one, you know, because like if I look at last year, okay, estimate, love, price, pain, there's four, Devon Ford, five, and then that's it. So five running backs last year, you don't have your bron pain this year. Obviously you don't have estimate, but you've got love, you've got price, you've got a Nias Williams, you've got Keidren Young, Devon Ford would be the fifth. Now I'm here and talk a little bit about this central Michigan transfer in here. You know, no, he's he's not on scholarship, so he's still a walk on. But I think we're probably talking about five considering Jabron Payne is going to miss the entire season. So I will go out on six and stick with five. Michael kind of following up Riley's ankle, Emile Wagner's weight is deuce visiting three things Notre Dame fans are obsessed with and with pretty good reason with pretty good reason. See like TD4 and D says Buckner. No, I don't know. Like I guess Buckner, honestly, I hadn't really even thought about it, but which shows you, you know, where he is on the priority list, but I think fans are probably more infatuated with Buckner's return than most people in the media. That's my guess. Because, you know, like, is it worth noting what Tyler Buckner does on day one? Probably, but don't forget, he's a receiver. He's not going to be out there throwing any passes. I will I will guarantee you that as dangerous as it can be, I will guarantee you that the Tyler Buckner will throw zero passes on day one of Notre Dame fall training camp. If he does, I'll make Vince eat my hat. How about that for a guarantee? Okay, from Joe Allen, Notre Dame will have to be undefeated to obtain the fifth seat in the college football playoff because the loser of the SEC and the Big Ten Conference championship games will be given the fifth and sixth spots in or out on that. I think I'm probably going to be out on this because let's for that to happen, you need the upsets kind of, you know, like some of these other scenarios that we've talked a little bit about the last couple of weeks. I think that you need the upsets to happen, but let's assume that the favorites win, you know, like, let's say Ohio State beats Oregon in the Big Ten championship game. And they play during the regular season as well. So both of those teams are going to have at least one loss. So maybe that's not the best example because I don't don't see multiple losses there, but you're more likely to see a multiple loss team definitely from the SEC, I think, playing in the conference championship game. And again, if the favorite team, if the team that won the regular season wins that game, then I think that bumps that number two team down because more likely than not, they're going to have multiple losses. Now, I mean, obviously for Notre Dame, it really for everybody, but for Notre Dame because of the whole seating question and the fact that now all these coaches and teams and, you know, whoever affiliated with the conferences, the fact that they, you know, because Marcus Freeman, you know, sent off these light bulbs when he went on ESPN a couple of weeks ago and he's like, Oh, you know, we do have a buy. It's just week 13 when all these other teams are playing in conference championship games. And they go all the way, Oh, I guess that's true. You know, because everyone was talking about the fact that Notre Dame couldn't have a first round playoff. So I don't see the loser of both of those conferences because there is an and in here the SEC and the big 10. One of those could potentially be trouble for Notre Dame. If Notre Dame is sitting at 11 and one, obviously, there's a greater chance that they get bumped down. But because there is an and in there, I think, I think at least one of the teams from those two conferences is going to have multiple losses. So I don't think that that is necessarily going to push Notre Dame down. But again, Notre Dame wants the five seed. Their best chance is always going to be to go 12. No, Tommy guns. The bow show will get first team reps in the, I think he means boundary and dominate. I'm leaning toward that. So I'm going to go in on this and, you know, dominate. I don't know. But the word is strong on Bo Collins and what he was able to do this summer and working with Riley Leonard and working with the other quarterbacks and, you know, like you went out and got Bo Collins. Why? Because he's got experience and he played for a great program like Clemson as well. So this is a guy with a ton of experience. It comes from a really good program who, you know, you're bringing into Notre Dame. We didn't get a chance to get her eyes on him during the spring because of the fact that he couldn't practice with the team in the spring. But I think that there is a very, very, very good shot that Bo Collins is going to be that number one boundary receiver. And so I'm going to go in on this. I think he's going to be a really big addition for Notre Dame with both the size and the skill and everything else that he's going to be able to provide the fighting Irish in that boundary and at receiver. D troll hunter says Notre Dame media's video release from day one of practice will be disappointingly short. That's probably a pretty good chance on that. I mean, how long are those videos that we typically get to see from that? Not very long. Not very long at all. You know, like you're talking about a couple of minutes tops, it seems like 90 seconds is what it typically ends up being. So I will go in on this that fighting Irish media's video release from the first day of practice is going to be disappointingly short. You're going to be wanting a lot. And the thing to do, because we can still show you, you know, different video, we did find out today, I'm not even going to go into it. Like there's going to be some different rules on what media members can and can't post on social media and stuff like that. When it comes from practice, unless you're doing it, you know, like from the official Twitter or Instagram account, you know, whatever, you know, those kinds of things. So, we will be able to show you a few things in this show, though. So look forward to that as well. Yeah. And still city coach was asking why Bo Collins didn't get to participate in the spring. Chief Brody kind of answered it. He was actually living in South Bend in the spring, but he was finishing his degree at Clemson online. And so because he was still basically a Clemson student, he was not allowed to practice with the fighting Irish during the spring. So that's kind of a long in the short of that. Another one from Joe Georgia, having as many criminals as professionals is going to be the standard going forward because all they care about is winning an national championship. We interwey out on that. It sure seems like the easy answer is in right now, because like all this repeat stuff going on down there at Georgia, I I just I don't understand what's going on down there. Like how is it would be one thing even if this was a professional team at, you know, an NFL team that you saw all this stuff going on, but it was a college team. And it's like, it feels like every other week you hear some of this stuff. So it's an unfortunate end. This episode is brought to you by Progressive Insurance. He says if this has already been discussed, my apologies. It hasn't. Anyone hear anything about Deuce Knight having a visit to Auburn this past weekend. This is up on the Champions Lounge. Brian posted something this afternoon. So if you're a Champions Lounge subscriber, go to the Champions Lounge and read the Intel there after this show, of course. Yeah, I guess you can bring it up like during this show and you can read it. But, you know, so there is, so there is some Intel up there about Deuce Knight and Auburn. So you can know, you can check that out. Another one from D-Troll Hunter. The SEC will get a nine and three team in the playoff over a 10 and two big 12 conference runner up team. Oh, man. I'm going to go out. I guess, I guess it depends on how many, you know, like 10 and two 11 and one 12 and O teams are in front of the nine and three team and who that nine and three team lost to because like when you look at most of the SEC schedules, like they're not all playing everybody, you know, like Georgia isn't playing, you know, they're not playing both Texas and Oklahoma and Alabama and Tennessee. Now they're playing some of those, obviously, but they're not playing all of, excuse me, the top teams in the conference. So, I mean, this is, this is why the SEC in the big 10 before we even got the 12 team playoff format, why they wanted to expand the format to 14 teams because they want the opportunity to get a fourth team and maybe even sometimes a 15 in there. But if it's a conference runner up in the big 12, that means they were, well, they wouldn't be 10 and two. They'd be 10 and three probably at that point, right? Because 10 and two is the regular season, 12 games, regular season. So, they would probably actually be 10 and three at that point. But, you know, if we kind of slide it the other direction, if they were 11 and one and now they're 11 and two and their second loss is in the big 12 championship game, I'm still going to be out on that. I'm going to be out on that. I think that, you know, especially assuming it's a competitive game in the conference championship game, all those different things, because I don't think it's as easy as, you know, well, this, this 11 and one team, 11 and two team, this, you know, because it's still there, there's going to be some factors who they played, who they lost to, who they beat, how competitive are those conference championship games, all those different kind of things, you know, like if it's this competitive, for example, is Baylor, Oklahoma State, a few years back, the year that, that Oklahoma State ended up playing Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. I think that the loser of that team is going to be in the playoff. I don't think they're going to get snubbed from the playoff. They might end up being like a 10 or 11 seed, maybe a 12 seed, something like that, you know, again, it's all just going to depend on a lot of different factors other than just record and a winner or loss in a conference championship game. Another one from detroll hunter swimming is the best Olympic sport to watch followed by women's gymnastics and then track. I am in on this. I'm at least in on the top two, I'm a little bit like track when the Americans when we have like some, you know, some high-end sprinters, whether it's male, female, you know, men, women, the whole thing, I am in on the track, but we have just been down for the last few years and Jamaica has overtaken us when it comes to Olympics and, you know, world competition and stuff, you know, at, you know, whether it's world championships or the Olympics or anything else. So I'm definitely in on swimming is the number one sport and then women's gymnastics. Those are far and away the two that I watch the most when it comes to Olympics. I will say actually the beach volleyball, because I was just watching beach volleyball before I came in here and I was watching some beach volleyball yesterday, I would put that above track right now. I think it's, you know, and it's, it's definitely a lot more exciting than your traditional indoor, you know, regular volleyball, whatever your standard, you know, volleyball, the beach volleyball is a lot of fun. And I mean, you, you talk about a cool setup that they've got there, you know, with, with the Olympic beach volleyball stadium right outside the Eiffel Tower. That's pretty slick as well. I will say this as I digress a little bit on my Olympic coverage. I don't know how much you watch the Olympics over the weekend, but I was very disappointed with this whole, this Leon guy from France. You know, he wins the gold medal and he dominates. It's, that's, that's great. You know, and he's like, he's being coached by Michael Phelps's old coach and he goes to Arizona State and all this different stuff and he just dominated the field, you know, getting the gold medal. He wins going away. Well, I don't know if you, if you happen to watch that race, but he's dominating. And there's an American in competition with two other guys, you know, like three body links behind him, but there's an American with two other guys still fighting for who's going to get the silver and who's going to get the bronze. But as soon as this French guy touches, it's like, it's like the race is over. Like they stop focusing on the American who is competing to get a silver medal. And ultimately he did get a silver medal out of the thing. But it's like, come on. Going to watch the Olympics, your main focus, if I'm watching NBC, which I am, I live in America. It's an American TV network. You should, uh, you should be focused on the American first, right? I mean, that's when my jingoism comes out, is when the Olympics come around. Oh, Michael's saying men's track didn't win an individual gold at Tokyo. So it kind of backs up what I was saying, and they do, they show everything live in the afternoon, and then they kind of play the hits again in the evening coverage. So that to me is like one of the benefits. One of the many benefits of working from home is while I'm working, I can watch live Olympic coverage. So that's kind of cool right now. DK winner Olympics are 10 times better than summer Olympics in or out, out totally out on this summer Olympics rule. I like a couple things in the winner Olympics. Of course, everyone watches figure skating because that is what is on the most. I like watching the curling. I'm actually at least somewhat into the curling. I like the short track speed racing there when it comes to the winner Olympics. Those are my favorite things at the winner Olympics, but sorry, DK. I know like you're, you know, Mr, Mr. Hockey and all that kind of stuff, but I am out on the winter, winter Olympics being better than the summer Olympics, summer Olympics rule. A friend, a rule. We in or we out? * Swimming is the best Olympic sport to watch followed by women’s gymnastics then track, excluding team sports. We in or we out? * Winter Olympics are 10x better than Summer.
