This is AP News, I'm Rita Falle. We'll start with the weather, severe thunderstorms in the Midwest with a large hail and maybe tornadoes, knocked down trees and power lines and damaged homes overnight and into this morning. They'll be looking at whether tornadoes did, in fact, hit the Chicago area in northwestern Indiana. In Texas, it's wildfires forcing people out of their homes cutting off power to thousands and briefly shutting down a nuclear weapons facility. They blame this on strong winds, dry grass and warm temperatures. The AP's Lisa Dwyer. That's prompted safety warnings for several towns in the state's rural panhandle. The smokehouse Creek fire has more than doubled its size since it sparked Monday. The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings and fire danger alerts for several other states throughout the midsection of the country. I'm Lisa Dwyer. Though Joe Biden and Donald Trump won their party's primaries in Michigan yesterday, there are warning lights flashing for both of them. Trump rival Nikki Haley once again showed that some Republican voters may have misgivings about him and voters who chose uncommitted in the Democratic primary are an indication of backlash over President Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas War. Maryam Mosin in Dearborn Michigan says she chose to be uncommitted. Four years ago, I voted for Joe Biden and it was important that we vote to get Trump out of office and today I feel very disappointed in Joe Biden and I don't feel like I did the right thing last election. Chrysler is recalling thousands of Jeep Grand Cherokees because of a steering wheel issue. It may cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles. This includes late model Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. This is AP News. San Francisco is apologizing to black residents, the AP's Norman Hall, with this story. Supervisors in San Francisco have formally apologized to African-American residents and their descendants for the city's role in perpetuating racism and discrimination. Among other things, a resolution apologizes for systemic discrimination and targeted acts of violence. An advisory committee proposed that every eligible black adult receive a five million dollar lump sum cash payment and a guaranteed income of nearly $100,000 a year to remedy the wealth gap. According to a 2022 federal count, black people make up 38% of San Francisco's homeless population despite being less than 6% of the general population. I'm Norman Hall. Small business owners say they're optimistic as 2024 gets underway. That's in a new survey from American Express. 85% say they're satisfied with the success of their business.
